What is Food Irradiation? 101 Guide Food irradiation is a method that enhances food safety and shelf life by decreasing or eradicating microbes and insects. There are numerous companies that process irradiation for food preservation. One of the most renowned companies that helps in food preservation by radiation is Symec Engineers. They have a work attitude that encourages creativity, hard effort, professionalism, and the desire to build and develop new solutions in difficult environments. Food irradiation is a type of radiation that is used to kill germs in food. Microorganisms, bacteria, and viruses are killed, delayed, or rendered incapable of reproduction depending on the dosage. Foodborne sickness is eliminated as a result of irradiation. Some foods are irradiated at high enough levels to assure that the end product is sterilised and free of spoilage or harmful germs. Food absorbs energy when it is irradiated. In the same way that heat energy kills germs when food is cooked, this absorbed energy destroys microorganisms that might cause food poisoning. They can also help prevent veggies from sprouting and delay fruit ripening. When the irradiation treatment is over, the food quickly loses the absorbed energy, just like cooked food does when it cools down. Some of important reasons to irradiate food for its preservation are ● No one enjoys getting food poisoning. Bacteria and moulds such as Salmonella, which may degrade food and cause serious foodborne infections, are destroyed by food irradiation. ● Foods that do not require refrigeration can be sterilised using irradiated foods. These can be used in hospitals for those with weak immune systems or those who are receiving chemotherapy. Band-Aids, surgical gloves, and even cosmetics are all irradiated for sterilising purposes. ● Have you ever wondered why spices have such a lengthy shelf life, or why the bag of potatoes you got last week still doesn't have any sprouts? Irradiation of food is the answer. Irradiation of foods can increase their shelf life by killing organisms that cause deterioration and early sprouting. ● Irradiation kills or sterilises invasive insects that reside in or on imported fruits and vegetables, preventing new bugs from infecting crops. This procedure is also less harmful to the produce than certain pest-control methods, which involve toxic chemicals and may destroy the product. The different types of food that can be safely irradiated are mentioned below. For all these products, the parameters of irradiation are however different, in terms of the density, dose range and average dosage. 1. 2. 3. 4.

Fresh fruits and vegetables like mango, pomegranate, spinach, lettuce etc Tubers like potato and onion Food grains, cereals and pulses like rice, wheat, atta, jowar, dal etc Spices like chilli powder, turmeric powder, cardamom, pepper etc
