President’s Message Dear Members, Sponsors and Well Wishers of KCWA,

It is our great pleasure to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Kuwait Canara Welfare Association (KCWA) with grandeur. My warm greetings and sincere congratulations to the entire KCWA family for the marvellous achievements during the past 25 glorious years.

We thank God for His goodness to us, and grateful to all our prominent predecessors for their foresightedness, wisdom and hard work to build KCWA as it stands today. The seed sowed by our founder members now grown to a mighty tree and shelters many underprivileged poor children to receive formal basic education back home in India. Year after year a good number of students benefited from the financial assistance provided by KCWA and made their journey through life to a better, happier and more fulfilling future. All of us at KCWA take great pride at our accomplishments over the past 25 years. Surely, all this was achieved by the grace of God and selfless service of the office bearers, benefactors, donors and all its more than 2,000 registered members who worked together as one large family that made to contribute nearly 3 Cores Indian rupees, significantly for education and also to needy brethren for the humanitarian causes.

I would like to quote the words of Mother Theresa ‘It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” I firmly believe that this what KCWA is doing ever since its inception. We have benefited from our society in various ways and it is our moral responsibility to reciprocate with good deeds by best way possible. Our member’s steadfast commitment to the association clearly exhibits love for the less fortunate brethren, and the flame really burns within their hearts. Thus every small or big contribution reaches to the poor who are really in need of help, thus cherishing their life.

It gladdens my heart to a great deal and I am really happy to lead the dynamic Managing Committee of KCWA for 2013-2015. I consider myself fortunate to be at the helm, the Committee consists of members with diverse talents and great capabilities, work with a team spirit, enthusiasm and commitment. Cooperation from our family members is really great. The support from our Ex-Presidents, previous Committee Members, KCWA members and Sponsors is enormous and all of them deserve a big ‘Appreciation’.

Silver Jubilee is a celebrative milestone in the journey of our vision; a time to pause and reflect on all the good work done and to visualize the future of KCWA. The mission ‘In pursuit of providing education to the poor children’ should continue. It’s my earnest desire and sincere appeal to all Mangaloreans living in Kuwait to be a part of KCWA. We have a silver legacy on hand and from here we shall move forward together with strong and active faith to scale golden heights. We shall hold the KCWA banner high and work hand in hand to support the deprived children and gift them a future full of hope. Let us invest in goodwill where the returns are going to be priceless blessings and a feeling of greatness of doing something good for the poor families back home.

We are thankful to the great rulers of Kuwait for providing us the opportunity to work in this country and allowing us to keep our social and cultural values alive. We are grateful to H.L. Bishop Camillo Ballin, MCCJ, Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia, our Spiritual Director Rev. Fr. Noel Almeida OFM. Cap. and all the clergy of Kuwait for their constant encouragement, support and guidance. 25 years ago it began with one man’s selfless thought to help the helpless and up lift the under privileged. As the days passed people of good will joined hand to hand. Today it is grown into a big family; more than 2000 people under an umbrella of KCWA with one goal: “In pursuit of ensuring primary education for poor children.” John Dewey says, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” So helping the under privileged children towards education is giving life itself.

Whatever we begin with good intention and clear vision; not for self glory but for the welfare of others will last long. This above statement is proved right as KCWA turned to silver and for sure it will turn to gold. So on this great occasion of your Silver Jubilee I extend my warm greetings and congratulations to all the members of KCWA. Great indeed are your achievements in these 25 years. Your unity and generosity; selfless thought and selfless service for the needy at home town is very much appreciated and I am grateful for all that you have done. We all hope and believe; whatever we do to the least we do it to the Lord. So too the Heavenly Father who sees all this in secret will surely bless you and your family in hundredfold.

I also wish you success in all your future endeavors. May God bless you all and let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven (Mt. 5: 16).

It brings me great joy to congratulate the members of KCWA as they celebrate 25 years since the inception of the association. Groups and associations come into existence for various reasons – some to meet personal needs like selfdevelopment, recreation, social and cultural interaction etc.; others for altruistic reasons. The KCWA is one such altruistic association – they are focused on the welfare of the community.

I was very pleased to hear that the KCWA has offered financial assistance of Rs. 2.8 crores towards education and humanitarian needs. By offering assistance for education, the association is helping the next generation to be independent and self-sufficient. As Jesus said, “in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.”

Mt 25:40. Yes indeed! The members of KCWA are not just offering help to the financially weak, they are serving Christ!

I have personally referred several cases to the KCWA for financial assistance. The members meet regularly to review and scrutinize the referrals they receive. After careful review, the association has always helped deserving brothers and sisters. I am truly grateful to KCWA for helping the economically poor people.

I appreciate the time the members set aside from their work and their families for this service and thank the association for all the help they have given to our less fortunate brothers and sisters. I know that God is blessing these members for their generosity and helpfulness. I pray that the good work which KCWA is doing may continue with God’s blessings.

I am really delighted to know that (KCWA) Kuwait Canara Welfare Association is celebrating its Silver Jubilee on 25th April 2014. It is indeed a land mark in the history of Kuwait. On this special occasion I would like to thank and praise God for His blessings upon this association. I congratulate the president, the office bearers, members and well wishers of this association who have been part of it from the beginning up to date.

The seed that was sown in the year 1988 by few members with the noble intention of helping the poor children for education has grown into a big tree and today it has more than 2000 registered members. In these 25 years of service KCWA has donated Rs 2.8 corers towards the education and humanitarian needs of the poor in India and in Kuwait.

Besides that KCWA has been a role model and anchor to other associations to keep alive the Konkani language and culture.

Provincial to take me to India and so now I›m here. I›ve no internet at home but I come to the internet cafe to have access my e-mails. Thanks so much for your kind mail. If it is not too late let me with God›s grace, pen my reminisces of my golden years associated with KCWA. I remember very vividly my ties with KCWA as the homely home which was always on the wheels of smiles giving so much of comfort, strength and soulful nourishment to all those who would come and knock at the doors of KCWA and you would open your hearts and give them the shelter of Jesus which He so much keeping you embraced by saying When I was naked and homeless and no education you gave me all the necessities of life. My association with this organization goes way long back - First as chief guest and second as President.

It is a miracle that KCWA survived the Kuwait – Iraq war. This is only possible with the ardent support of its well wishers and NEVER SAY NO attitude of its founding members. Even though I missed the growth of this Association my heart and prayers were/are always with them.

Congratulations do go to all the past and present members as well as Committee members without whom KCWA would not have grown into such a gigantic welfare association.

I am extremely happy to know that Kuwait Canara Welfare Association (KCWA) is celebrating 25th Anniversary of its existence on 25th April 2014. I am also happy to note that you are bringing out a souvenir to mark the occasion. While I pray for the success of the souvenir, I congratulate all the Office Bearers, Committee Members and Members of past and present, especially those who have worked hard for the achievements of this association.

When the KCWA was founded in 1988 (14/7/1988) in Kuwait, I was working for the Ministry of Health as a Medical Record’s Director and I have got a chance to serve as a 3rd president of this association for the period of 1990 - 1991. At that time Two Hundred members were already registered their names under this association. The main motto of the association was (1) to provide financial assistance to the poor, needy unaffordable student of South Canara, India.

And second motto was cultural activities or entertainment of the members and their families.

Now, I am really excited to know that this small 200 members tree is grown as giant tree of 2000 members and helped more than crore rupees to the poor children for their educational purposes.

I don’t consider what the association (KCWA) has benefitted by my service but rather what I have been. I am in Kuwait for the past 17 years, but hardly any people in our community knew about me until I started rendering my service to KCWA. I have utilized my talents and exhibited on stage like dancing, acting, singing and compeering and also expressed my thoughts in the form of poetry which have been published in the souvenirs, presented my short plays on the stage and have sung my compositions on various occasions.

This way I have got ample opportunities to make use of my talents while serving in KCWA. When you render selfless service, it doesn’t fetch any earthly benefits but most of the time the reward is protection from all dangers. In 2008 my heart reminded me that it cannot tolerate high blood pressure, sugar and other diseases. I was hesitant to lead KCWA due to my heart problems but yet I agreed to it and thus my services continued in KCWA which gradually helped me to reduce all my ailments and made my heart happy and thus everything is normal now. So I have been personally benefitted by giving service to KCWA, which is the reason for my real identity in Kuwait. On the occasion of celebrating Silver Jubilee, I wish KCWA all the success and more glories in future.

KCWAFund FundDistribution: Distribution: 1988- -2014 2014 KCWA 1988 In the past 25 years, a total of 2.8 Crore Indian Rupees has been donated by KCWA towards education and humanitarian necessities in India and Kuwait, a major share of which is directed towards the cause of education of children in rural areas in Karnataka.

Primary Education: In line with KCWA’s main motto, the Poor Children’s Education Fund has been established in 160 Institutions spread throughout the Canara region of Karnataka State. This fund facilitates books, uniforms and school fees to the needy children, which is distributed irrespective of their caste or religion. At present this Education Fund has grown to 1.2 Crore Indian Rupees.

Educational aid to Special Needs The Computer Education Centre at St. Agnes Special School for Physically challenged children built in the year 2000, at a cost of Indian Rupees 40 Lakhs.

•

Contributed Indian Rupees Five Lakhs towards sponsoring a classroom in the Navachetana School Project, Venur which shelters and cares for the Differently Abled Children in the year 2004.

•

Disbursed Indian Rupees 6.5 Lakhs to setup the Anugraha School for Differently abled children in Bellary, India in 2010.

Higher Education

•

A permanent Scholarship of Indian Rupees Ten Lakhs to educate two meritorious students from Mangalore diocese, annually, in the St. Joseph’s Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangalore.

A Scholarship of Indian Rupees 8.5 Lakhs was distributed to 207 deserving University students of Mangalore and Udupi regions to pursue higher education in 2012.

•

Contributed Indian Rupees 10 Lakhs towards the Library block of the new St. Mary’s College Building in Bela, Kasargod District, Mangalore Diocese.

•

Provided financial assistance of Indian Rupees 5 Lakhs towards building a primary school at Kumbla through St. Monica Educational Institutions in Mangalore.

Humanitarian Aid

Routed Indian Rupees 32 Lakhs towards various humanitarian intentions.

KCWA Support to Anugraha School Differently Abled KCWA for Support to of Bellary children Anugraha School for Differently Abled children of Bellary KCWA’s association with Anugraha School for the differently abled children in Bellary, Karnataka started in June 2010, to defray the recurring expenses of the school for a year and partly the following year. It is managed by the Anugraha Foundation and is run by the Sisters of Apostolic Carmel. The Anugraha Foundation is a joint venture by Basavaraj and Family of Bellary and the Bishop of Bellary – Rev. Dr. Henry D’souza.

Dear KCWA, I'm indeed delighted to learn that KCWA would be celebrating its Silver Jubilee soon. We thank and praise God for the 25 years of glorious service rendered by the association. It has been my privilege to witness the colorful and meaningful annual day event in 2008. The mood was exciting and festive.

Everything was well planned and aesthetically presented. I am immensely grateful to KCWA for generously supporting the fledgling Anugraha School for Differently Abled children of Bellary.

KCWA has been a precious blessing to the Canara Catholic families in Kuwait, fostering and strengthening cultural and ethnic bonds. We congratulate all the past and present leaders and their collaborators for their dedicated work in building up the Association. Also, it is an opportunity to groom the younger generation to be achievers, to be leaders of tomorrow and to be change-agents. The ever expanding Internet facilities and cyber communications offer manifold opportunities for the Association to go global and reach out to all families and individuals. Through the leadership of KCWA, may all the Catholic families in Kuwait be strengthened to become a haven of “life in abundance” offered by Jesus Christ.
