BIRD’S NEST | Design Statement What do you need to create a nest? A bird doesn’t ask itself, but knowns instinctively what it means to create a home for itself and its family. I wanted to amplify the same experience a bird would have in creating a home. From creating a foundation for strength, making sure it sticks together with mud and even finding small trinkets for comfort. Understanding what it means to create a Bird’s Nest is understanding our clients, Howard & Tracy. Their client profiles exemplify that they are the types of people who strive to help and change situations for the better.

Whether it is programming new applications to help businesses or strengthen people to find their inner core, Howard & Tracy use their skills to help others in their work lives. I wanted to amplify their empathy and love for people but for themselves when they come home. Being newly wed, they are continuously entwined with each other and I wanted to take that aspect of their relationship into consideration. Starting to understand how they will create their foundation, finding out what about their relationship sticks them together and most of all, how they find comfort in each other but also in the space around them. I want to create a space that addresses Howard & Tracy’s needs in a cohesive and well-rounded manner. Using Tracy’s love for earthy materials, that is what creates a foundation in the home. Rustic hardwood flooring, and Sage Green cabinets to ground the home. Yet the subtle golden hints to elevate the home’s aesthetic. The furniture pieces ties the two, dining and bar areas, together. The Smart Home appliances are Howard’s trinkets. Howard and Tracy’s ease of life is due to their the technology that surrounds them and in turn, creates a sense of comfort. Of course, making a nest isn’t a one robin job. The kitchen itself is a two-cook kitchen, meaning the space is shared between two chefs and the addition of a gourmet kitchen allows for simple maneuvering between work spaces and the dining table. The kitchen is a common place, a work zone and a resting area. Having a simple-to-use yet aesthetically appealing kitchen will help Howard and Tracy build their own version of a bird’s nest.

what is the project? what are the parameters that define the project?

This project consists of designing a residential space for Tracy & Haword. The description from NKBA are: Howard and Tracy Redding are a newly married couple in their early 30s, who live in a suburb of San Francisco. Howard works as a software developer in the tech industry while Tracy teaches yoga at a local studio a few blocks away. They recently moved to this area and are looking to update their kitchen and bathroom spaces to better reflect their styles. Howard prefers modern, clean lines while Tracy likes lots of texture, with earthy elements such as natural stone and wood. Since Howard works in the tech industry, he’s fascinated with all aspects of smart-home technology and is looking to incorporate it into both spaces, while Tracy is looking for a beautiful, functional design.

what are particular conditions, functions, goals, that need to be considered in the design process?

The particular functions that need to be catered to the clients are the inclusion of smart technology and & smart in-home devices that add an ease of life to Tracy & Howard's life. Tracy's love for earthy elements and the connection between machine and nature and how they interact in this space.

Spatial Requirements For Howard, potential storage requirements for gadgets, smarthome technology, possible built-in tech for the house For Tracy, spaces to take picures in, well-designed kitchen that is aesthetically pleasing yet highly fuctional and multi-faceted for a range of cooking needs For both, a lounge/ calm zone for relaxation that does not have to do with Yoga or Work, but for themselves to spend time with each other.

Tracy: Tracy is a yoga intructor as well as Instagram influencer that specializes in healthy living, cooking & wellbeing.

Critical Issues For Tracy, I was trying to figure out why she got into Yoga? Could she be trying to fight off a potential muscle or joint issue that is genetic or could develop. Possibly arthirits?

A potential design challenge I was thinking of was how can we make the space, especially the kitchen suitable for someone who is may be diagnosed diabetes? Howard may have pre-diabetes genetically and then as a designers, how can we design a space that accomodates for the potential needs of someone who may be diagnosed with diabetes

Using the two floors as a division space, the stairs as a means of connection between spaces.

Wayfinding should be simple and not as thought provoking as the work that they are used to.

There are 2 parks located on top of hills in this area of San Francisco. They have options to hike & bike as they please through the trails that run throughout. Terrain is hilly but both Howard & Tracy don't mind it.

Natural Resources According to the NKBA, the stairs are made out of maple. So materiality would center around those stairs Water of course, is not as abundant as the East coast so there is a caution on using too much water in this area.

Weather and Climate Temperature ranges from the high 50s to 70s year around. Percipitation mostly occurs during the winter months (Nov - Mar). During the summer, rainfall almost ceases to exist but again, a surge of tourism increases as the weather goes up.

INDIVIDUALISM | Design Statement Howard and Tracy Redding are the types of people who strive to help and change situations for the better. Whether it is programming new applications to help businesses or strengthen people to find their inner core, Howard & Tracy use their skills to help others in their work lives. However, helping people, being considerate and naturally being empathetic is not always the easiest job. While most bathrooms are used for washing and cleanliness, I wanted to go on a separate approach and focus on the individual in the bathroom space. When taking a shower, using the toilet or even taking the minute details to brush in between cavities, people do a lot of thinking and spend a lot of time in the bathroom. Most importantly, it is just for themselves. I wanted to expand on that and celebrate that moment to yourself by designing a bathroom that is serene and clean but also as a pause in life, where taking a breath and thinking is key. These pauses should of course address the needs of Tracy and Howard, as they age in place, where this bathroom can be used by someone in their 30s but also their 60-0s. Accommodating for worst case scenarios where medical conditions can develop or even worsen. To design for the individualist, it was important to have separate vanities and mirrors per person. The idea behind the mix of wall materials stems from having different backgrounds. When looking in one mirror, you see a dark-textured stone wall. Grounding the individual and really focusing on their reflection. While in the other mirror, you are immersed in a lush-tropical jungle. Allowing yourself to submerge within your environment and be one with nature. These two experiences in the bathroom are like no other yet cohesively, fun and reflective.

Howard and Tracy’s lifestyle drives them to find themselves again after accommodating to the needs of others and each other. I wanted this ideal to drive the design of the bathroom.
