Edition No. 10

Adding years to your life & life to your years

A directory of social activities for those over 50 (but not exclusively) across the Borough of Great Yarmouth

2016/17 Charity No. 1095214

Direct Payments & Personal Budgets

Whether you are disabled or elderly, direct payments and personal budgets are offered by your local authority to give you more flexibility over how your care and support is arranged. Perhaps you wish to employ your own Personal Assistant/Carer? Or have specific hobbies/activities you wish to do more. A personal budget or direct payment will be created after an assessment by social services. If the council decides you need any kind of support, you will receive a personal budget and can choose a direct payment instead of letting them arrange services for you.

How we can help you ..

If you aren’t able to, or don’t want to manage your own finances/personal budget or employ your own PA/carers, it’s possible for Business Solutions to manage the direct payments on your behalf. Business Solutions provides a local, caring, dedicated team to support you with your budget and even employing your own Personal Assistant/ Carer. We can provide references from local people who already use our services to help take the worry out of managing their budget and paying their staff.

Foreword It is with delight that I welcome you to this 10th edition of the Ageless Opportunities Directory. I have been involved since the beginning and never dreamt we would get to the 10th edition! Over the years each new Directory has been eagerly greeted, not only by people over 50 looking for an activity, but by their families, carers, neighbours, support workers and also those under 50 who want to take up something new. There are some groups who now have waiting lists so no longer feel it fair to have an entry in The Directory, which is great for them but might mean you have to look further afield for an activity! Fortunately there are MANY activities in here – covering a wide range of options, some sitting, some not. Sadly the years have seen a few groups cease – usually through lack of people willing to take on committee roles which ensure the group can keep going. If you are able to help a group – as Chair, Secretary or Treasurer, or as a general committee member, please let them know. You may not even belong to a group yet and may prefer to be on the committee rather than a participant! My thanks to Great Yarmouth Community Trust for caring for the Directory over these years and to Kate & Rachael for their work with the groups to pull all this information together. Many thanks also to Rachel Elkin for laying out the pages each year and liaising with the printers. Best wishes to you all and I hope you enjoy whichever activity/activities you choose. If you require more copies of the Directory please contact the Priory Centre reception on 01493 743000 or call in for a copy.
