The Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn narrow gauge railroad once carried 7 million passengers a year through a tunnel underneath East Boston.

Today, only vacant lots and a fenced off waterfront remain. This coastal park and green corridor are an homage to East Boston’s industrial history through new avenues of physical and social connection.

Site Visit: Sketches and Photos

Despite the waterfront location, Porzio Park and the adjacent Boston Harborwalk were almost entirely empty on a summer Tuesday afternoon. Smell from sewage at low tide, the hardscaped surface, and noise from the nearby airport are possible factors.

The area was busier on Saturday, but people still avoided the unshaded plaza and stayed near the athletic courts and water.

To make the site’s industrial past tangible, I created a collection of postcards using historic images, with short descriptions about the images on the back. The newsprint wrapping features graphite rubbings from the East Boston site.

Permaculture Design Intensive • 2022 Maine Ecological Design School

This non-credit earning course’s goal was to demystify permaculture design by teaching students how to make a base map and document design decisions. I selected as my site a hillside park dividing affluent and low-income neighborhoods: the Western Promenade in Portland, Maine. I was interested in how permaculture design could bridge the disconnect between disparate neighborhoods while contributing to biodiversity. I visited the site multiple times research the site’s ecological conditions and document them in this base map.

Student at Bowdoin College Philosophy 3325: Utilitarianism and Its Critics

Argumentative writing sample excerpted from “Can Utilitarianism and Environmentalism Overlap?” (Dec. 2020)

Utilitarianism Environmentalism ....Utilitarian Environmentalism (UE), as I will call it, is the argument that justifies environmentalism using utilitarian theory. The basic Principle of Utility (PU) demands that we maximize the amount of utility experienced by moral agents, with “utility” often being interpreted as pleasure or happiness. PU does not specify any limits to whose happiness should be maximized: just as most morally-minded people in the year 2020 would agree that a person’s race or the town they live in should not impact how much others care about their welfare, utilitarians extend this nondiscrimination to people of any time, such as those not yet born. UE relies on this belief that we ought to care about the welfare of future people to argue that people ought to act in ways that will prevent the destruction of the environment. This includes actions that actively attempt to restore the environment and actions that try to stop or reverse present harms to the environment. Because UE judges actions based on whether they would generally contribute to future happiness by preserving the environment rather than a case-by-case basis, it falls under rule utilitarianism rather than act utilitarianism.

Graphic Designer at The SunriseGuide Client: Royal River Heat Pumps Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 issues

Capturing attention with the unexpected: There is a correlation between people who value sustainability and those who care about arts and culture. Rather than product photos, this campaign features multimedia art by Fiona Libby, appealing to Green & Healthy Maine HOMES readers interested in high-performance home design. Taking full advantage of back cover placement, the artwork bleeds off the page to complement the front cover. Digital aspects take a back seat to the traditional: in “Falling Water,” raw edges were preserved on the felt piece, and in “Watercolor,” a gentle gradient softens the edge between watercolor paper and the bottom portion of the ad. Amidst designs emphasizing clean lines, this campaign turns to the organic and hand-created for a fresh, yet familiar approach.

Drawn with fork tines dipped in ink, this series depicts a single bouquet of flowers for fifteen consecutive days. Over the fortnight of drawings, physical decay is juxtaposed with technical growth as the fork transforms from an unusual to familiar drawing implement.
