Poolside Gossip, Palm Springs, California, 1970
Slim Aarons
Poolside Gossip, 1970 Poolside Gossip is the quintessential Slim Aarons’ image and is widely recognised as a modern masterpiece of photography. Shot in 1970 in Palm Springs, the setting is a pool party at a classic modernist house designed by Richard Neutra and belonging to the art dealer, Joseph Linsk and his charismatic socialite wife, Nelda. In an interview years later, Nelda, recalled that Aarons called her and said “ I want to come over and do a pool shoot.. Call some friends over, pull something out of your closet”. In the foreground, Nelda Linsk, in yellow, is deep in conversation with former model, Helen Dzo Dzo and to the approaching them on the left is Spanish-born American acress, Lita Barton. In the background we see other glamour friends, with cocktails in hand and the idyllic purple mountains of Palm Springs on the horizon. Aarons took many photographs during this iconic shoot and whilst Poolside Gossip is the most famous, this exhibition also features Poolside Glamour and Poolside Pairs, two images captured moments apart and each of them with slightly different details. The Neutra house itself has had a notable history. It was originally commissioned in 1946 by Edgar Kaufman, scion of a wealthy Pittsburgh department store family. After many years of alterations and owners, including Barry Manilow, the Neutra house was listed for sale in 1993 just before the preservation movement of mid-century architecture was taking hold in Palm Springs. The listings agent labelled it as a “tear down” but within a decade, up for sale again at auction, the final bid was $15m. Today, the house has been designated a local landmark and is easily the most famous house in Palm Springs.

Slim Aarons
Introduction Working in collaboration with Getty Images, this exhibition was due to be staged last year to mark the 50th anniversary of Aaron’s most famous image, Poolside Gossip, shot in 1970. However, we are delighted to be hosting this unashamedly escapist exhibition now and as part of a diverse programme that we have planned as we embrace the future under our new gallery name, Gloucester Room. The exhibition features images curated from Slim Aarons’ archive of images from the 1950’s to 1970’s.. Instantly recognisable and seemingly effortlessly cool, Aarons’ photographs, in his own words, are about “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.“ Alongside Aarons’ photographs, the exhibition also features four specially commissioned paintings by the artist, James Paterson, who is fast developing a following for his masterly figurative paintings and witty combinations of nostalgic and retro styling with a contemporary twist. James was invited by Getty Images to visit their archives and to immerse himself in the imagery and memorabilia from the Kaufman House shoot of 1970 and many dozens of covers shoots Aarons was commissioned to undertake for Holiday magazine and other published titles of the day. In homage to Poolside Gossip, James has created a major painting revisiting this image and incorporating details from the other moments captured during the shoot. In his signature way, James has focused in on key details, rendered with extraordinary sharpness and accuracy, whilst other areas are left deliberately loose and painterly. His other three paintings reinterpret some of Aarons’ most striking magazine covers from for travel magazines, in an era when leisure travel was the privilege of the jet set of the day.
Capri Holiday, 1958
Slim Aarons 1916-2006 Slim Aarons is regarded as one of the most influential magazine photographers of his generation. He was born in New York City and took up photography as a teenager. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the army and was later appointed official photographer at the US Military Academy at West Point. During WWII he served as an army combat photographer for Yank magazine. After the war, he became a freelance photojournalist; first based in Hollywood, then Rome and New York, working for magazines such as Life, Holiday, Town & Country, Look, Venture and Travel & Leisure. As his career evolved, Aarons was welcomed into high society, photographing the rich & famous, the beautiful and the celebrated. His post war portraits form a virtual genealogy of wealth, privilege and talent in all its manifestations: Hollywood, Royalty, European aristocracy, socialites, captains of industry, media moguls, statesmen and stars of every sort. Aarons saw himself as a journalist whose duty it was to report and inform, leading him to develop the ‘environmental portrait’ – photographing his subjects at home, at play and mingling with each other, always in settings synonymous with their status in society. Capturing a vast geography of resorts, spas, estates, palaces, elegant apartments and other glamorous settings, Aarons’ photographs immortalise the ‘Beautiful People’ and documents a lost era of style, grace and the good life.

Slim Aarons – catalogue of works The next 60 pages of this catalogue feature a curated selection of works by the seminal post-war photographer, Slim Aarons. All images available to order unframed or framed, either as Open edition prints or, subject to availability, as Limited Edition Estate Stamped prints in an edition of 150. The Limited Edition prints are embossed with Slim Aarons’ signature by the Artist’s Estate, managed by Getty Images for over two decades. James was invited by Getty Images to visit their archives and to immerse himself in the imagery and memorabilia from the Kaufman House shoot of 1970 and many dozens of covers shoots Aarons was commissioned to undertake for Holiday magazine and other published titles of the day.

Slim Aarons Prints – formats, editions & pricing explained
The Slim Aarons images featured in this catalogue are from the Slim Aarons Archive, owned and housed by the Getty Images Archive in London . All photographs are printed and authorized by the Getty Images Archive and Slim Aarons Estate. Colour images are produced as Original Colour C-type prints and Black and White images are produced as Silver Gelatin prints; both are produced utilising the original transparencies and negatives housed at the Slim Aarons Archive. All images are available as Open Edition prints, in a wide range of size formats and some are also available to order as Estate Stamped Limited Edition prints. The Estate Stamped prints are limited to an edition of just 150; these are issued and editioned by the Slim Aarons Estate, numbered in ink and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. As the edition of 150 starts to sell through, the price of the remaining prints in the edition increases. Once the Limited Edition of an image has sold out, prints in this category will only be available on the secondary market. The Estate Stamped Limited Edition of both Poolside Gossip and Poolside Glamour, have now sold out and prints from these editions now trade on the secondary market for prices well beyond their original release price. Prices for unframed Open Edition prints range from £235 for a Classic format (40 x 30 cms) print to £895 for a Super Giant format (182 x 121 cms) print. Prices for unframed Estate Stamped Limited Edition prints, are subject to change as the prints within the edition start to sell through. These limited editions are Collectors’ items and have been seen to trade well on the secondary market. In some instances, the prices achieved on secondary market far exceed the original price. Slim Aarons prints – Perspex Mounting & Framing Pricing Perspex Mounting A contemporary way to present photographic prints, ideal for those wanting an ultra minimal look, with no visible frame. The C-type print is face mounted directly to a piece of Museum quality acrylic (also known as plexiglass, Perspex or Lucite) with a clear, pH neutral adhesive. The back of the print is mounted to an aluminium composite backed with a wood or metal cleat., allowing the piece to be “float” mounted on the wall. Perspex mounted prints are well protected and are notable for their deep and brilliant colours. Face mounting is considered a permanent process; prints cannot be safely separated from the acrylic surface once mounted so this process is offered for Open Edition prints only. Framing We own a bespoke conservation framing business, RG Framing London, and offer a wide range of framing options. All our framing is conservation grade and archivally sound in order to maintain and protect the beauty and longevity of your print..
