“My paintings are primarily about colour: whether bold, bright, subtle, or quiet we are surrounded and influenced by it. In equal measure, combinations of colour can delight and disarm, while also inviting feelings of contemplation. My intention is to discover and enhance different colour palettes that have a positive and joyful energy.
The subject matter, in fact, is often secondary to the colour. The subject is drawn from imagination and memory, rather than an actual vase of flowers or landscape and this way of working allows the painting to spontaneously evolve on the canvas with each stroke of oil paint. Using this traditional medium in generously applied layers, I hope the rolling landscapes and vibrant blooms take on their own lives.
Above all, I want my work to be uplifting – people often have an immediate, visceral response to art and if that can be a joyful one, then that is what I am aiming for.”
Kirsty Wither, 2025
“A laden brush and palette knife give body to her pictures. Consequently the colour in a painting is rich, but it is much more than decorative. On the contrary, her pictures have a very satisfactory kind of poetic solidity.”
Duncan
