As an artist I used photography as my medium for more than 20 years It felt like a natural progression to move towards painting. Using abstraction as my way to communicate, it has allowed me to get in touch with a different part of myself Unlike my work as a photographer, where I developed my narrative working alongside a model, painting has given me the freedom to work alone, providing me with a different kind of space in which to express myself
For me, painting is the letting go of the definite, of trying to control the outcome, but allowing for the unexpected, the joy of new discoveries..”
Louise de LimaLouise de Lima uses paint, collage and mixed media to produce abstract works that convey a broad repertoire of forms, gestures and surfaces. The visual rhythms within the works range from gentle alignments of refined geometry to bold exclamations of juxtaposing layers. These powerful abstractions present a rich, painterly language whose vocabulary speaks of deeper meanings
The source material that de Lima draws upon is as wide-ranging as her mark making: references to personal memories of family, poetry, letter writing, history and philosophy are all layered into the works- their references left for the viewer to excavate like archaeological artifacts.
De Lima’s artworks connect everyday human endeavour to higher spiritual concerns, where the artist’s subjective interests are poured into a universal language of abstraction There is a sense of shifting seasons and the passage of time, where memories of things long lost meet with the here and now
