Western Conveyance Water and Sewer Update

Section II of the Western Conveyance Project (the end of Marsh Hill Road, Shingle Camp Terrace, Shingle Camp Road, Sandy Shores Road, Sandy Beach Lane, and Stockslager Road to Penelacres Lane) began in early May. The project has made tremendous headway, and as of late September, almost all roads have been completed or are in the final processes. Work will continue through fall until the winter weather sets in. This project should most likely be completed in early 2017. Please contact 301-334-6976 for the project’s current status.

Your 1st Choice in Real Estate Possible Plans to Dredge Deep Creek Lake Recirculate Earlier this year, plans to dredge Deep Creek Lake came to the forefront of local discussion. In 2013, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources contracted a professional sedimentation study to help determine if and where sedimentation issues were occurring. The study identified 10 coves that could need sediment management. In March, DNR Secretary Belton reported that DNR will aide Garrett County in the development of the grant application to help the project gain financial support. As of now, full funding and allocation has not been arranged or committed and will most likely not be solidified

until final costs of the project have been confirmed. In August, a small convention was held with state legislators, sediment experts, and community members to further clarify the sediment removal and help answer questions. Speakers included Senator George Edwards and Delegate Wendell Beitzel, who spoke to attendees about their efforts in our state’s capital. Sediment build-up is a natural side effect of weather, boats, and water, though the natural topography of the lake may also be the source of the problem for impaired coves. Deep Creek Lake is owned by the State of Maryland, and the state

will be responsible for the final approval for any and all dredging or construction projects that occur. Historically, the DNR’s stance has been that sedimentation in the lake is not an imminent problem, but they are committed to further work on its management. Assuming that additional funding is secured, it’s possible that a dredging project could begin in the spring or fall of 2018. Information about these reports and studies can be found at: http://dnr2.maryland. gov/publiclands/Pages/western/ deepcreeknrma.aspx.

Personal Watercraft Restrictions Will Remain in Place In a 6 to 1 vote, the weekend summer restrictions for personal watercrafts will remain in place. The lake policy and review board voted not to move forward with any studies, as they felt raising these restrictions presented a risk to boater and lake

safety. Early this year, there had been renewed interest in lifting the ban, as some felt the restrictions were confusing and unfair to tourists. The board members voted in late July, and this matter is now considered closed.
