HOUSE OF STORIES Dongguan, China

As Dongguan in PRC faces challenges of an ageing population and Housing Shortages and particularly millennial leaving for better cities, we were tasked to propose housing solutions for the millennial.

We began with analysing its urban fabric and Investigating ways to improve or revitalize its social infra-structure in response to projected population growth and to develop a new hub for the working millennial.

As a result, LIVE, WORK & PLAY came as the three vital elements to drive this project forward. A community for young millennial where their lifestyle is not compromised for work but incorporated into it.

SITE ANALYSIS

LAND USE

ACCESSIBILITY

Mapping the primary uses of different spaces, in Dongguan, China to develop a strategy that recognizes the potential for social interaction in and around the site. Understanding the overall context of the site and its growing transformation, we proposed a master layout plan that encourages communication between the working millennial and locals and promotes a co-working environment.

Additionally, as the cost of living is rising and apartments are unaffordable, more and more young adults are open to sharing the facilities and the cost.

Journey around the Neighbourhood

The streets around the site reflects the character of its neighbourhood and it is observed that the streets and alleys along the site are mostly empty. Its a densely populated low rise domestic buildings where the tenants are mostly low income factory workers. To revitalize this ageing area with young bright minds, streets can be use to influence the perception of the space and portray the quality of space. It plays a vital role in connecting the neighbourhoods and create a communal space for people to share ideas

STUDENT DORMITORY North Point, HK Island

An Inspiring learning environment encourages creativity, collaboration ,and critical thought. Spaces are designed to adapt as pedagogical practices evolve, rethinking the traditional classroom to support different forms of learning. Neighbourhood

Located adjacent to the IEC campus in North Point, the corner site with a dimension of 21x10m posed some design challenges and it was important to consider human congestions next to the junction, traffic noises, low sun exposure (tall surrounding buildings) ,and so forth. On top of it, the design brief stated not only to provide sleeping accommodation to architecture students but also provide learning facilities such as studios to satisfy the increasing number of students enrolling in the program.

Following the analysis and observation of both the brief and the site, which also played an important role in defining the form, the programs were arranged in such a way to provide the best learning environment, nurturing creativity, encouraging socialization without compromising their privacy ,and more importantly, giving them a space to relax their minds.

INTERIOR PERSPECTIVE

Studio Space

Separated by different levels in height without any physical barriers, studio spaces are arranged along the staircase to foster collaboration and encourage active learning. The stair connects all key learning spaces and allows the student to experience the spaces throughout.

Exposed concrete and polycarbonate panels create a functional, airy space and favours uniformity in the diffusion of natural light.

Student Dorm

Top: Upper floors (4F - 6F) area, with one shared kitchen for students, provides a place to calm their minds and rest their bodies from all the mental stress. Each floor is connected through a lift and staircases. A sky bridge connects the dorm to the IEC campus where only architecture students and the staff are allowed to use it making it easier for the students to move their architectural models and panels freely.

The translucent polycarbonate exterior allows a consistent amount of daylight to brighten dorm areas and creates a lantern-like glow from the building in the evenings. It reduces the need for artificial light.

Neighbourhoods are not only a manifestation of human activities, it is also a planning device. Understanding local elements for design allows us to reconsider our individual neighbourhood and relate them to each other in one way or another. Neighbourhood collages are not just a representation of the town or area. They also reveal much about its inhabitants, their activities and their relationship with the environment. And as with most things in life, how we perceive our neighbourhoods through habit, stereotypes and expectation can all affect how we experience them.
