The Creative Economy

Wellington Place

Leeds, UK

Exploded Diagram

Wellington Place is originally a space designed for office buildings. In this project one of the buildings was chosen to be transformed into The Creative Economy.

Architecture and fashion are more than just functional containers; they are opportunities to actively excite and provoke our se nses. Both architecture and fashion have been in creative conversations for decades. Fashion and architecture have always been tightly knit, as they originate from the same root—Art. Fashion is wearable art, while architecture is inhabitable art. Architecture is stagnant and rather permanent, whereas fashion is a hype that storms in and out quickly. When viewed in isolation, they appear to be two distinct artistic forms, but when these two fields collide, the outcome gives rise to an impressive idea. Architects and fashion designers follow similar principles of geometry, balance, and form to create structure and design lines. This admiration flows both ways.

The idea here is to create a space for The Creative Economy. Beautiful architectural spaces are often neglected. In this case, office spaces are no longer in use. The impact of COVID-19 over the past year has completely changed the workspace dynamic. Most people now prefer working from home unless office space is urgently needed. In Wellington Place, there are too many office buildings and not enough spaces for art and leisure. This design will make use of the space to attract more visitors and incorpo rate greenery and water features.

Physical Model & Animation

1:200 & 1:20

The physical model, built at a 1:200 scale, effectively conveys the material and spatial intricacies of the design. It serves as a tangible representation of the project’s core principles, allowing for a deeper understanding of its volumetric composition, structural logic, and interplay of forms.

Additionally, the 1:20 scale model focuses on the facade's added envelope, highlighting how materiality and layering enhance environmental performance and user experience. Through these models, the varying shapes and dimensions of the design are articulated, showcasing the integration of form, function, and sustainability. The physicality of the model emphasizes the ephemeral yet impactful nature of the architecture, reinforcing its role as both a community resource and a dynamic space for interaction.

A 1:200 physical model was constructed to demonstrate the material and spatial complexity of the design. Also, a 1:20 physical model was made to present the added envelope on the facade The different shapes and dimensions are displayed with this model

The Strand Theater

Adaptive Reuse

Boston, MA

The user experience at the Strand Theatre is designed to be immersive and engaging, blending historic charm with modern amenities. The new addition enhances this experience by creating spaces for community activism and artistic expression in Uphams Corner. It not only provides meeting spaces but also fosters a creative environment where artists and performers can share their ideas through interactive and engaging performances.

The entrance features a double-height ceiling and exposed original columns, highlighting the theatre's architectural history and offering a grand gathering space. A newly designed meeting area supports local activism and community discussions, with an open railing that visually connects it to the lower level, enhancing the spatial experience.

Adjacent to this, a serene garden in front of the open studios serves as a picturesque and tranquil setting for performances and community events, contributing to the overall ambiance. The space fosters a collaborative atmosphere for artists and performers. Additionally, a cafe and exhibition area provide places for relaxation and learning about the theatre's legacy and the notable artists who have performed there. The cafe's rooftop access offers panoramic views of the surrounding area, appealing to both locals and visitors.

These additions transform the Strand Theatre into a dynamic cultural hub, accommodating a wide range of activities, from artistic performances and exhibitions to political engagement and social gatherings.

The Strand Theatre is a cherished almost-third space with ample room for a variety of activities and interactions. Much like the community it serves, the Strand can only benefit from a diversity of spaces and increased opportunities for varied interactions. We want the Strand to be a comfortable space for casual interactions that fuel the artistic spirit of the theatre, bringing more people into its orbit.
