Stand up for paddleboarding

So. We’ve seen them out there in the harbour and we’re curious.

Stand Up paddle boarding (SUP) looks a whole lot fun. And it is.

Annie Lorenzen is keen to get more people out on the water to try what is becoming an increasingly popular sport. She plans to organise group sessions, primarily for women, to help with both physical and emotional fitness. As a personal trainer for the last 15 years and competing body builder for four of those, Annie has witnessed – first hand – the benefits of discipline, training and exercise, for holistic wellbeing.

The restorative effect that comes from being on the ocean is no secret and it is very surprising how easy paddleboarding is. The nature of the movement is such that whilst requiring balance and a degree of core strength, the feeling is one of freedom. The rhythm needed to paddle becomes a great leveller as the body rediscovers its own inherent beat. This has a Zen effect. Paddleboarding is quite different to surfing, as you are on top of the water rather than tumbling around in the wash. Stability and elevation provides a good platform to learn the technique and co-ordination required for either sport.

Annie sees paddleboarding as an accessible way to get out in the elements, to enjoy the beauty of nature whilst getting fit. “It’s good to see women having the confidence and enjoying the water. You know they might be feeling like crap, real crap, but they see that they can do it, they can handle it and it is so rewarding to give people the chance to find that.”

The camaraderie of exercise with a group of women is an added bonus. It is easy to chat and laugh away whilst putt-putting around the harbour. Think coffee mornings without the caffeine. Shopping without the guilt.

The boards are light enough to carry and all that is needed to put them on the car roof are surf straps, racks not necessary. No wetsuit required unless you’re a girl… [joke]. Level entry cost of a paddleboard is around $1300 new but there are bargains galore on Trade Me. Plans are to meet on a regular basis to explore Whaingaroa, whether it a short blat across to Te Akau or day safari further up the harbour . It is a stunning harbour that we have the pleasure to live on, and to be on the water, to look back at Raglan and her surrounds, gives one an appreciation for how truly lucky we are - can’t really think of a better way to explore it.

YES to future development of Raglan Club Raglan Club members gave a definitive YES to future development of the club at a special meeting held on Saturday.

However, this was not until some lively debate took place.

The meeting, called to discuss proposed commercial development of the space at the front of the club, is a milestone in a long and at times confused process.

A building committee has been working away behind the scenes progressing development options to bring to club members. Three building options for the development of shops at the club frontage were researched by the group. Before any more work could continue it was time to know whether the members of Raglan Club supported the development at all.

Former President of the Club and convenor of the building committee Barry Dalbeth summed the situation up.

“All the work done has been to bring us to this point where we can seek a mandate from our membership - a Yes or No whether we undertake this major development.

“Now our members have given voice to their support we can move forward. I am confident that the figures we’ve worked with in our calculations are not too far off the ball park.

“Council consent has been received and we know of people interested in renting the shops. We can’t expect them to commit on paper if the club has not made a decision to proceed”, said Barry

Clint Baddeley, local resident and Waikato District Councillor addressed the meeting giving his encouragement for the members gathered to come to a decision. He said the club needed to add some strings to its bow.

“The club is very much part of Raglan, and its development will make a contribution to the wider community”.

Club Accountant Peter Vonlanthen’s comments resonated with many.

“I think the concept is extremely good.

If the club stands still it is going backwards.

While inflation rates in the future are uncertain we need to create new sources of cash flow to secure the future of the club”, said Peter.

Some did not feel so positive.

Chris Bath, club member summed up his thoughts.

“The concept is great. But the timing isn’t right with the current world economic climate. Five or so years ago the time was ripe and we should have struck while the iron was hot” said Chris.

Another member, Allan Stephenson felt the meeting process itself was a problem.

“People seemed to misunderstand what the president was saying.

I am happy with the outcome but want to know what we are going to do next – that’s important for people to know!”

‘Flak’ prompts teachers to justify action The ban, which was lifted late last week as an act of “good faith” after the Government and the teachers’ unions agreed to get around the negotiating table, applied to meetings before 8.30 and after five and meant for instance that senior school parent-teacher interviews last week had to be crammed into two-hour slots after 3pm rather than be held at night.

Earlier, in a letter to the Chronicle, teachers Danny Te Moananui and David O’Loughlin said their unions – the NZEI and PPTA -- had been trying for some time now to find a way to settle a fair and equitable agreement of their claims under the renewal of the area schools collective agreement, which expired last June.

“However we have met with continued resistance and counter offers,” they said. “This is why we are taking industrial action at this time.”

They said that contrary to media opinion “this action is not about higher pay, it is … to retain our conditions of service for our current and future teaching staff”.

The staff spokesmen said teaching had changed with the times, listing a string of “professional requirements” placed upon them in recent years. These included professional development, the controversial National Government-introduced national standards, OSH constraints, behavioural issues, sports coaching, administrative responsibilities and management.

They said the collective agreement had been negotiated to ensure retention of “quality teachers to help support quality learning for your (parents’) children”.

The teachers’ letter also emphasised they’d agreed not to start strike action at this stage, and pointed out the now-abandoned meetings ban did not include currently organised student activities such as those involving sports teams or cultural groups.

Principal Malcolm Cox admitted to the Chronicle this week he’d taken some flak over the timing of the parent-teacher interviews – which did not suit some parents – and also teacher-only days. But he said people were “fine” once they knew what the issues were.

With the meetings ban lifted, year 7-10 “middle school” interviews were to revert this week to evenings as is usual.

Malcolm Cox said the area schools collective was the last of several such groups left to negotiate its conditions of service after industrial action at secondary schools around the country had dragged out over several months, but primary teachers’ claims had been settled.

It was a “very small political voice”, he added, seeking an agreement somewhere between that of the primary and secondary teaching collectives working with the same unions.

But one local parent with children at Raglan school felt that area school teachers’ reported pay demands could be seen as bordering on the unreasonable in the current economic environment.

The parent, who did not want to be named, understood the area school teachers’ claims presented to the Education Ministry last August called for a four per cent rise in base salary scales from July 1 last year and a further increase this July to match any rise in the consumer price index.

While a significant number of the other non pay-related claims could only have a positive impact on student learning, at the same time there appeared to be a host which related to a range of teacher allowances.

Pohutukawa Playcircle - The Magic of Steiner

After a temporary absence, the Pohutukawa Playcircle has been reignited as a parent collective inspired by the Steiner-Waldorf approach to education. The Steiner approach encourages respect, reverence, and wonder for nature and regards learning as a voyage of discovery. Rhythm and ritual are fundamental elements of this approach. The weekly Playcircle rhythm flows from guided play to free play and from stillness to activity. Activities include making bread rolls, inside and outside play, song time and story time.

All toys are simple and made from natural materials to nurture rich, imaginative play. Parents are encouraged to explore alongside their children and to actively

participate in the rhythm of the circle. The parent collective meets monthly to bring new ideas for the circle and to find a community for current and future Steiner based education here in Raglan.

More holiday fun at the Old School Planning for the Easter holidays? Good news for families is the return of the popular Oscar holiday programme at the Old School Arts Centre from 26 – 29 April. Thursday is a creative day, making a big mural from pics taken during previous Oscar holiday programmes. Friday as usual is cooking day, this time bread making – take home your own baguette for tea!

Three surf academy students off to worlds It’s a “huge honour” for three of Raglan Area School’s surfing academy students to be heading to Peru next month for the trip of a lifetime at the Quicksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, says their head teacher Larry Fisher.

While it will be third time round at the annual champs for ace surfer Ben Poulter who steps up this year to the under-18 division, it’s Todd Doyle’s second shot at the worlds – also now in the under-18s – and Paul Moretti’s first, in the under-16s.

Only four surfers get selected in each of three divisions, including under-18 girls, for the 12-strong New Zealand team, says Larry.

The boys are up for some “pretty stiff competition”, he adds, but will head to South America hoping to get all the way to the final rounds like Ben last year – placed a stunning sixth overall at the champs held on home territory at Piha.

Ben, 16, and his family moved from Piha to Raglan some years ago when older sister Alexis – also off to the worlds – began three years in the academy.

Raglan more recently from his home in Mimiwhangata and with his older brother Joe, who remains in the remote Northland location, makes up the second set of siblings bound for Punta Hermosa in Peru.

There’s a potential fourth Raglan Area School link to the world junior champs in Tyler Lawson, who’s been named as first reserve in the under-18 s and gets to go if one of the team in his division pulls out.

Police to keep public away Local man escapes from footbridge work zone from under fallen ute Raglan police will now patrol the Kopua footbridge construction area – with assistance from the Night Owls – after a section of the safety fencing was demolished overnight last week, possibly by errant youths who were seen climbing the fence at dusk.

News of the police involvement came last week just as Waikato District Council water & facilities general manager Richard Bax issued a safety warning advising that the fenced compound and the work area were “strictly off-limits” to the public until completion of the project in October.

On-site contractors were concerned at the number of people trying to get into the construction area, he said, despite warning signs and the surrounding safety fence to “protect the public”.

Public access, insisted Mr Bax, was simply “not an option”.

“Our aim with this project is to complete it on time and on budget with minimal disruption to the public and the marine environment,” he pointed out. “The contractors are making every effort to support this.”

Meantime Mr Bax acknowledged the strong local interest in the bridge construction, which was “on schedule”.

The now-visible first stage of the $2.5 millionplus replacement project, he said, had been to build temporary staging to support the crane. The new bridge will be built alongside this platform and the final stage will see the existing bridge removed from the harbour, section by section.

Raglan emergency services rallied last week to help rescue a 36-year-old Te Mata man who suffered crushing injuries to the chest when the vehicle he was working on fell on top of him.

The man was “very lucky”, says local St John team manager Bush Barton, to have been able to get himself out from under the ute he was working on after his jack slipped, causing the axle to drop onto his chest.

He’d reportedly had the foresight to place a tyre and a couple of stands underneath the ute which took most of the weight when the vehicle fell, and was able to “self-extricate” by raising the axle and sliding out.

He then crawled to his house and phoned emergency services.

The man, who had breathing difficulties, was looked after by Dr Mike Loten and a nurse from a neighbouring property before the Waikato air ambulance – in the air within six minutes of the Thursday morning callout – arrived to take him to hospital.

He was discharged from Waikato Hospital two days later.

Life’s a beach for dog-man and friend He’s a familiar sight as he ambles the streets and the beach every day, a lionlike German shepherd by his side.

Power is just not a necessity as far as he’s concerned. “I’m not a TV fan and I follow the rugby a bit – on the radio.” The commentators are better, he says, and he’s just as happy to picture the games for himself.

He’s known around town simply as the dogman – and for Brian Chesham it’s a way of life that suits him and his dog Zak, his faithful friend of seven years.

Most days Brian, who’s on a sickness benefit after having suffered three heart attacks in his 40s, walks along the beach into town from Manu Bay – and back again at day’s end.

Zak greets many locals like long lost friends whenever their paths cross. It’s a howl-cumbark that from a distance sounds remarkably like someone in animated and noisy conversation.

He walks everywhere, visits a few friends, doesn’t worry about lunch.

“You’d be surprised how many people you meet when you go walking,” he says. “People stop and say hello, especially the kids. They want to stop and pat Zakky … they’re more interested in him than me.”

“He’s a talker from a long way back,” says Brian, “A real people-lover.”

In fact Zak is so vocal when Brian meets up with friend Steve from the Four Square that there’s no way they can have a decent conversation till he quietens down.

Brian, 54, and a territorial from way back, has lived in Raglan a couple of years now – until recently in his red Toyota station wagon which was often parked down the end of town on Cliff Street. He and Zak fit “quite comfortably”, he reckons.

And there’s a few good people around Cliff Street, says Brian, who’d give him a meal or two every so often. Brian would offer to “give them a hand” in return, doing anything that needed to be done.

Brian Chesham and his good friend Zac But now Brian’s got a caravan – albeit minus electricity – to live in. It comes courtesy of longtime local Rangi Kereopa and it’s on family land at Manu Bay to which Rangi recently moved.

Brian has a view towards Ngarunui and can hear the surfers in the other direction. And a winter without electricity doesn’t bother him. He spent 10 years in the territorials with twice-a-year training at Waiouru where, he reckons, “it can be winter all year round”.

And while he’s never married, Brian can call on family in Hamilton where he was born and bred.

So what brought him to Raglan? “I always liked it,” he says simply.

Brian remembers coming here most holidays and weekends with his family when he was growing up – to a bach in Cliff Street, to another place that’s gone now just above the wharf, and roughing it in a tent at the Kopua campground.

Those were the days, he says, when milk bars not cafes ruled the streets of Raglan.

The bookshop was a milk bar, as was the Duck Inn (now Zaragoza), as was the shop down at the wharf (now Marlin Café & Bar) and of course there was the Centennial Milk Bar & Cabaret (now Orca Restaurant & Bar).

He remembers when the town’s original fish ‘n’ chip shop was where the Burger Shack is now, Costa’s Pizza was a bakery where the old barracuda loaves and Sally Lunns were picked up warm and fresh each morning, the Chinese takeaways was the Four Square and the Waikato District Council building was an “old two-storey place”.

It was the Post Office too, he recalls. “You could make toll calls there.” Eva Rickard used to work in it, he adds. “She’d go and get your mail.”

Brian is unfazed by the changes – “can’t hold back progress”, he reckons. Even with the changes he still prefers the small-town lifestyle over that of the big city. And like us all, he wants to win lotto. It would buy him a house in Raglan, he says. There’s one for sale in Nihinihi Avenue he’s already got his eye on.

Pekapeka (bats) are the only land based mammal in New Zealand. We have two species; the short tailed, and the long tailed bat. They are both about the size of a fat mouse, weigh around 12 grams and have a wing span of 250mm.

The long tailed nocturnal bat (Chalinolobus tuberculatus) is an insectivore. Its habitat tends to be outer forest, whilst the less common short tailed bat is an omnivore and feeds from kiekie and dactylanthus deep in the forest.

they roost), and predation by rats, possums, stoats and cats.

The long-tailed bat is highly likely to be present on Karioi. Whaingaroa Environment Centre (WEC) has purchased a bat detector in order to identify its presence. Electronic bat detector units detect the high frequency pulses emitted by bats and make them audible to the human ear.

Vege of the Month: Capsicum

Sweet, juicy and crisp capsicums or sweet peppers come in a wide variety of colours; white, chocolate brown and purple (among the more unusual shades). Green fruits are immature (that’s why they’re often cheaper) and most ripen to red. They can be long and tapered, short and blocky, thick or thin walled, and are of the Solanum family, along with potato, tomato and eggplant. The lack of heat in sweet peppers is the result of a recessive gene which eliminates the compound capsaicin, responsible for making hot peppers spicy. 7 varieties at the seed bank, Wednesday 1-3.

Community & Environment Day celebrates Children’s Day, Seaweek, the Xtreme Recycled Raft Race and Maui Dolphin Day. In celebration of the Maui Dolphin, WEC’s focus was on reducing plastic which can harm marine life.

Why think about plastic?

Plastics are everywhere and feature daily in our lives.

Every hour in NZ, 40,000 plastic shopping bags are dumped into landfills. Every week in NZ, 22 million bags are thrown into landfills.

There are seven different types of plastic, most are recyclable but it is not economically viable to do so.

Plastic can be made into other objects but cannot biodegrade completely.

Plastic can photo degrade, which means light causes chemical changes in the plastic which breaks in to smaller and smaller pieces. Like many other things, the rate at which plastic breaks down changes with the presence of light and oxygen. Plastic at the bottom of a landfill degrades at a different rate than if

it was floating at the ocean surface. Because plastic never really goes away it has become the environmental problem it is. Plastics have revolutionized our lives, but we need to find a good way to dispose of them, reduce demand on current plastics or develop new plastic that is not as harmful to us and our environment.

Can you guess how long it would take a jandal, plastic bag and disposable nappy to degrade?

The answers are not conclusive! Even in the best situation for degradation, scientists have only been able to guess as to how long each item will take to break down because many of these objects have not existed long enough for a solid answer to be made.

Last Raglan Sunday Session coming up!

Local dj’s and promoters Jamin-I and Dubsonic (aka Steve Reid and Paul Petterson) took their vision and made it reality this summer at the Yot club in Raglan.

Creating the weekly ”Raglan Sunday Sessions”; a free outdoor event , they have received amazing reviews

from the likes of Red Bull Special Ops who toured round New Zealand; calling it “ one of the most fun gigs of the summer!”.

“We are super stoked to see the new culture has been so well supported. It’s something we felt was missing, something that helps keep our community celebrating together; catching up and have a boogie in the sun weekly” says Jamin-I & Dubsonic.

A massive thanks to all the supporters, local and international dj’s , Antonio for the Mexican food and most importantly the great hosts; Rangi, Pete, Olly and the Yot Club staff which have been so hospitable to everyone.

(Watch the Yot Club for winter Sundays as they may be brewing something nice and loungy to keep us cozy…)

So go on: if you haven’t already joined the hype then make sure you come this Sunday from 4.30pm for the finale of the Raglan Sunday Session. You can all expect a great afternoon and evening of festivities; and to underline the gorgeous summer we’ve had., Dj’ Frano, Jamin-I & Dubsonic, King Macka & Jinja Cat and B Rex will be spinning some tunes for us all … nice!

Jacquemo gig Jacquemo returns to the Yot Club on Friday 8th April to serve up an eclectic mix of ska, pop, funk and roots.

New band member Greg Taylor on trombone and keyboards joins Hayden Scott Dye on saxophone to create a strong brass section, while original members Jak Prima and Boyd Dixon on bass and drums respectively, drive the rhythm.

Fronted by Jacquemo creator UK musician Nic Tribe (guitar,vocals),

the band are enjoying their Kiwi experience, having delighted audiences at various locations throughout the North Island.

With firm favourites such as Vanessa’s Dad and Wheelie Bin King they are looking forward to once again packing the dance floor and delivering a great night out in their home town.

Raglan senior rugby The result was not as bad as it reads with some positives coming out of the game, where in with players off the field, we were still able to score two tries and restore the faith.

One of those tries went to Man of the match Karewa Forbes, who looks like backing up a very strong season last year with a good start.

This report is only second hand, but I was able to catch up with a number of the players after the game and everyone of them were enthusiastic about the coming season and felt it wasn’t a bad game at all against a well organised Club.

The biggest downside is that we had to default the B team. This is serious stuff because if we continue

to default one team Raglan will be forced under the regulations to drop down a division to effectively a small country third division where clubs only field one team.

This is way below last year’s result in having two teams in the final and winning the division.

Players, it is up to you to get to training and turn up to confirm two teams for our next game here at home against southern United on Saturday.

The players who have made training and were there on Saturday are keen, and we have two coaches ready to go, so lets see a good turnout of players and spectators to cheer the boys on.

We look forward to an entertaining afternoon down at the recreation ground in Cross street on Saturday, See you there.

Raglan Junior Soccer 2011 The soccer season has started well with a great turnout for the muster which was held in March. However, the club is looking for more players urgently.

We are short of a few players for the 6th, 8th, 9th and 11th grade teams. The children playing in these teams are very dedicated and really would love to continue playing for Raglan but need these extra players.

Daylight saving ends New Zealand Daylight Saving will end next Sunday 3 April 2011 when 3.00am becomes 2.00am.

People may find it convenient to put their clocks back by one hour before going to bed on Saturday 2 April.

As well as changing clocks, the end of daylight saving is an opportune time for people to check their household emergency plans and survival kits and home smoke alarms.

The period runs from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April. This year daylight saving will recommence on 25th September, during the pool matches of the Rugby World Cup. Full background on daylight saving in New Zealand can be found on the Department of Internal Affairs website.

Dear Editor, For over a decade there has been a yellow fiberglass clinker-type dinghy happily moored in Aroaro Bay, next to Puriri Park on Wallis Street.

It’s probably one of the most photographed boats in Raglan, and has been painted by numerous artists. Jane Galloway has done it three times.

It is with great sadness I announce that on the 24th February my little yellow dinghy broke free: probably in search of a better bay.

My family and I have searched and searched but to no avail.

Can anyone mend a broken heart?
