Ministry of Information & Broadcasting Establishes Live Events Development Cell to Boost Concert Economy

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has set up a Live Events Development Cell (LEDC) to support the structured growth of India’s live entertainment industry and strengthen the country’s emerging concert economy, an official release said.

The LEDC will serve as a singlewindow facilitation mechanism to streamline processes for the sector and help position India among the world’s leading live entertainment destinations by 2030. The initiative comes amid rapid expansion of the organised live events market, which was valued at Rs 20,861 crore in 2024 and is growing at a rate of 15 per cent.It is expected to maintain a compound annual growth rate of 18 per cent, outpacing several traditional media segments. The cell was constituted in July 2025 under the directions of Union Information and

Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. It brings together representatives from the Centre and states, industry bodies and major event companies to coordinate policy support and drive sectoral expansion. The initiative follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at the WAVES Summit in May 2025, where he highlighted the live entertainment industry’s untapped potential as a driver of investment, tourism and cultural influence.

According to the ministry, the sector

currently supports over 10 million jobs, with a single large-format event generating more than 15,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are increasingly emerging as key growth centres. Citing a BookMyShow report for 2025, the ministry said Visakhnampatnam saw a 490 per cent rise in live entertainment footfalls, while Shillong and Guwahati recorded growth of 213 per cent and 188 per cent, respectively.Overall consumption across music concerts, sports and theatre rose by 17 per cent.

Industry participants say the presence of global artistes alongside large domestic tours reflects the growing maturity of the market. The LEDC aims to double the sector’s size, generate 15–20 million jobs, and position India among the world’s top five live entertainment hubs

FHRAI WRAPS UP DPDP RULES 2025 AWARENESS

SUMMIT, HIGHLIGHTS DATA PROTECTION AS HOSPITALITY PRIORITY

The Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), in collaboration with the Hotel and Restaurant Association Western India (HRAWI), successfully concluded an Industry Awareness Summit on the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules 2025 in Indore, underscoring the growing importance of data protection and cybersecurity for India’s hospitality sector. Held at Omni Residency on 4 January 2026 , the summit focused on helping hotels and restaurants understand the operational, legal and compliance implications of the DPDP Rules 2025, notified under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Discussions addressed sector-specific challenges, organisational preparedness and the need to integrate data governance into daily hospitality operations, as digital platforms increasingly power guest

engagement and service delivery.

FHRAI President Surendra Kumar Jaiswal said the DPDP Rules 2025 represent a significant milestone for India’s digital economy and are closely linked to building guest trust and ensuring long-term sustainability in hospitality. He added that the summit enabled members to better understand their responsibilities and the practical steps required to strengthen data governance systems. Jaiswal also highlighted FHRAI’s ongoing policy advocacy, including progress on singlewindow clearances, third-party fire

safety audits, abolition of the Eating House Licence requirement in Delhi, and proposals to adopt dry fogging systems as alternatives to anti-smog guns. He further noted FHRAI’s push for hotels and restaurants to procure directly from Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to ensure tourism-led growth benefits farming communities

HRAWI President Jimmy Shaw said the DPDP framework will directly impact day-to-day hotel and restaurant operations—from front-desk procedures and online bookings to vendor management and payment systems. He emphasised that the summit helped demystify compliance, especially for small and midsized operators, while offering practical guidance on embedding data protection without compromising service quality

Leading the future of sustainable exhibitions

years ago when I joined the management team to open Enercare Centre, Canada’s largest convention and exhibition centre at Exhibition Place in Toronto. Over the years I benefited from undertaking diverse leadership and operational roles which included business development, and working on project teams to renovate our arena, and later to renovate and relaunch our conference centre venue. In each of these roles, I benefitted from expanding my scope of work and had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of coworkers, industry professionals and suppliers, providing insight into leading with compassion, empathy and a deep understanding of the intricacies of team dynamics. I believe that the experience of personally engaging in hands-on work over multiple roles provided me with a perspective to develop my leadership skills that encourages teamwork, trust, shared values, collaboration and accountability

Laura Purdy I have had the unique opportunity to develop my leadership skills through engaging in a variety of venue management roles and responsibilities which began over 25

Working with hundreds of event organizers, promoters and planners provided a perspective of leadership through the lens of customer service and shared responsibility within my team to deliver services and support to our customers while ensuring we had solid tools and processes to successfully execute. Our industry is stronger through volunteerism and the ability to engage in industry associations. Through my participation in several industry associations, I have gained a global perspective and learned from some of our industries’ best leaders. I have the pleasure of currently serving on the Board of the Convention Centres of Canada, Meetings Mean Business

TMS. How have your diverse experiences in the exhibition and event management industry influenced your leadership approach at Exhibition Place?

Canada and the Board and ExCo of UFI, and I am a founding member of Women in Exhibitions North America. Working within each of these associations has contributed to an approach of lifelong learning, global insight and collaboration, which has positively contributed to my leadership style

TMS. Exhibition Place has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability through initiatives like the GREEN Smart program and LEED-certified venues. How do these initiatives align with your vision for the future of the venue?

Laura Purdy. Our commitment to sustainability at Exhibition Place is central to our vision for the future of our industry and the planet. As the largest convention and exhibition centre in Canada, I feel it is our responsibility for Exhibition Place to set the standard for environmental stewardship within the global industry. We have a wellestablished history of prioritizing environmental initiatives; in 2004,

our GREENSmart sustainability program was established to promote our innovative green technologies across our 192acre campus and has been instrumental in advancing sustainable development at Exhibition Place

We’ve earned award winning recognition globally, most recently the recipient of the 2025 UFI Operations & Services Award for our sustainable food service initiative, and I’m proud of that accomplishment. Going forward, our vision for a sustainable future is clearly established in our Strategic Plan, which informs Exhibition Place's business decisions, operations and our service delivery to our exhibition organizers and the public that visit our site

In January 2022 we were one of the first venues to sign-on to the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge, committing to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, in line with the Paris Climate Accord. With continued collaborative work throughout the global events industry, I wholeheartedly believe that we will be able to make swift

and essential progress towards reducing the overall carbon footprint. Our Net Zero Carbon Events Roadmap clearly outlines strategies for renewable energy, sustainable materials, food waste elimination practices, and emissions reduction. Our vision is purpose driven; and we lead by example and push towards positive change, demonstrating our economic growth while embracing environmental stewardship as we share our future at Exhibition Place Through sharing our sustainability message across the global stage, we hope to inspire other convention and exhibition centres to incorporate sustainability into their operations, venue design and service delivery.

TMS. In an era where technology is rapidly evolving, how is Exhibition Place leveraging innovations like Wi-Fi 6 and

Automotive Building conference centre offers WiFi 6, using a modern RF design to handle high device counts typical of conferences and galas. Across the street at Enercare Centre and common areas, we operate a 5 GHz-first wireless fabric and continually tune it with RF surveys to remove dead zones, manage channel reuse, and mitigate interference from rogue devices (a frequent reality at trade shows)

Behind the scenes, we continuously monitor performance and airspace utilization during events, using real time telemetry to spot saturation, interference, or misconfigured gear. Our wireless events network is managed under dedicated controllers and firewalls, with the Cisco Catalyst enterprise platform and Cisco DNA. Looking ahead, we have outlined an upgrade to WiFi 7 to increase capacity and

digital infrastructure to enhance attendee experiences and streamline event operations?

Laura Purdy. At Exhibition Place, our ICT north star is ‘frictionless connectivity’ across the entire campus. We are the only convention centre in North America to provide complimentary open and encrypted WiFi throughout our convention and conference centres – including the show floor - so that guests, exhibitors, and planners can get online instantly no splash pages, no passwords on the open SSID while still having a secure option for use cases that require encryption. This dual offer keeps connectivity simple for operational needs, and dependable for more sensitive workflows and networking. We have modernized the network where it matters most for density. Since 2021, our

leverage new RF spectrum potential across both the Automotive Conference Centre and Enercare Convention Centre venues. The objective is simple: keep attendees connected without friction, while giving organizers a highquality foundation for everything from mobile apps to live content.

TMS. How do you see sustainability, digital innovation, and community engagement converging to shape the future role of exhibition venues?

Laura Purdy Over the years, especially post-COVID, we've seen a lot of change driven by technology, yet with an emphasis on sustainability. We realize customers and

attendees want more interactive and immersive experiences. We’ve observed over time the future of the venue experience will become more personalized and enabled by AI integration. Currently, our efforts are more focused on modernization, community activation, and sustainability practices. For example, our solar and wind energy projects demonstrate our leadership in energy selfsufficiency as we pioneer climate action, having signed the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050

enhancements and virtual tours on our website, which further support our role as a forward-thinking, communityfocused and environmentally responsible venue

TMS. What operational challenges do venues face when integrating hybrid or virtual formats, and how is Exhibition Place addressing these?

We've also recognized the need for community involvement and inclusion and try to incorporate our sustainability efforts into our public engagement. The residential neighbourhoods surrounding Exhibition Place recognize us as a community public space, not just a convention and exhibition campus. Initiatives like Yoga in the Park, Music in the Park, Community BBQ, Community Ice Skating, Bee Keeping Workshops (using our honeybee hives), monthly community newsletters, and community meetings show that our commitment to community cohesion and inclusivity are central to our strategic goals. We firmly believe that to remain competitive, we need to be innovators and lead the way in community engagement. Our digital platforms are constantly evolving and improving, such as the WIFI

Laura Purdy. Hybrid or virtual components as enhancements to the trade show or conference program elevate expectations on venue networks in one major way: capacity. Capacity (be it through multiple devices or highdensity traffic), concurrent streaming, presenter uploads, and attendee engagement tools drive sudden spikes. While it might seem counterintuitive, our approach is to allow high bandwidth connections and provide those connections in an unfettered manner, as much as possible

This allows users to get what they need done as quickly as possible in a shared medium, thereby freeing up space and capacity for other users. The net result is that attendees get simple, fast, free WiFi; organizers get deterministic performance for their live and hybrid elements; and exhibitors can choose the right level of service open and free WiFi for basics, encrypted Wi Fi for added security, or wired when nothing but guaranteed performance will do

Leadershipisnotaposition;

it is a responsibility one undertakes for the good of society

TMS. Mr. Kalantri, you have had a long and illustrious career in industry, trade promotion, and infrastructure development. What core values have guided your leadership journey?

Vijay Kalantri. I joined World Trade Centre, Mumbai in the year 1983 as a member of council. Back then, I had the fortune of working with the stalwarts of that time. Some of mentors and colleagues like Late Shri Sheshrao Wankhede, Keshub Mahindra and Kamal Moraka during whose tenure I was Vice Chairman, I had the opportunity to learn something from each one of them. This has shaped my perspectives towards trade promotion and social service significantly. Over the years, every role which I took from an industrialist to the head of a prestigious organization like World Trade Centre, Mumbai I have been guided by some values I have learnt in my journey. Some of them are integrity, credibility, honesty and a desire to do something impactful in the society. These values have pushed me to take challenging and often difficult roles. However, over the years I have learnt that no role, no job and no business is impossible if you have willingness to do it and ready to work hard for it

Since I started, my only effort has been to strengthen platforms such as World Trade Centre Mumbai, All India Association of Industries and various bilateral forums so that they can outlast any one person and continue serving industry, MSMEs and start ups. When institutions are strong, they can consistently support exporters, attract investment, and provide policy feedback regardless of political or economic cycles

Another guiding value is inclusiveness – especially the empowerment of MSMEs, women entrepreneurs and young founders. As a businessman, I am inspired by the legendary M. Visvesvaraya, whose vision has made this institution. Our flagship events like the World Trade Expo are consciously designed and structured in such a fashion that a small entrepreneur from a tier II or tier III city can sit across the table with a foreign trade mission and explore partnerships on an equal footing – exactly what Shri M. Visvesvaraya dreamt of. This inclusive approach ensures that globalization does not benefit only a few large players but creates broad based prosperity and jobs across regions and sectors

Finally, I have a strong belief in constructive engagement between industry and government, no matter what the situation is. Dialogue is the only way out, that’s my mantra. While serving on advisory boards, export and MSME committees and working closely with policymakers, my constant endeavour has been to present industry’s concerns in a solution oriented manner and to help design frameworks such as the recent Export Promotion Mission that genuinely improve the ease of doing business and export readiness. Leadership, I feel, is not a position, but a responsibility which you partake gor the good of the society.

TMS. WTC Mumbai has hosted several bilateral

trade missions and summits this year. How important are these forums for expanding India's export and investment footprints?

Vijay Kalantri. This year we have completed 55 years in service to the nation. Throughout all these years, we have endeavoured to build a consistent legacy, surpassing previous years. In light of that, World Trade Centre, Mumbai and All India Association of Industries organized the 10th Global economic Summit, 6th World Trade Expo and WTCA Asia Pacific Conference which saw participation of more than 600 delegates, 30 ambassadors and Consulates, more than 200 business executives and over 6000 visitors in span of just 2 days. These events attended by ministers, policymakers and academics have acted as a catalyst in attracting trade and investment opportunities in the state as well as country. Our focus here at World Trade Centre, Mumbai remains to create a platform for dialogue between policy makers and the wider trade community

Events like National MSME Roundtable Conference is testament to our efforts wherein senior bureaucrats came to listen to the grievances of MSME associations Moreover, Bilateral trade missions, visiting business delegations, roundtables and similar platforms hosted at WTC Mumbai have become powerful instruments for expanding India’s export basket, diversifying markets and attracting quality investments. They bring together foreign trade missions, diplomats, overseas chambers, Indian MSMEs, start ups and large companies on one neutral platform, making it possible to convert conversations into concrete partnerships, JVs, technology transfers and market access within a short span. In the past quarter only, we have hosted trade delegations from basket of countries like Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Cyprus, Kenya, Sri Lanka and many more

Such forums are especially critical at a time when India is deepening its integration into global value chains and simultaneously facing new tariff and non tariff challenges in key markets. Initiatives like the Export Promotion Mission and targeted outreach to multiple countries will only succeed if they are complemented by ground level engagement platforms where buyers, sellers, financiers and policymakers can meet physically, build trust, and understand each other’s regulatory and logistical requirements. In this context, WTC Mumbai’s role as a bridge between diplomatic missions, government agencies and industry – particularly MSMEs – becomes even more important Equally, these summits and expos have a strong knowledge and capacity building dimension

Country presentations, sectoral sessions, training programmes and one to one B2B, B2G meetings help Indian enterprises especially first time exporters understand standards, sustainability requirements, digital trade norms and financing options in overseas markets. Over time, this ecosystem approach creates a pipeline of export ready companies and de risks India’s external sector by spreading trade across more regions, products and partners

TMS. What are the key program and partnerships WTC is Mumbai for 2026 to accelerate trade, export diversification, and foreign investor engagement?

strengthen our defense infrastructure and capabilities where we will highlight the innovation readiness of defense startups connecting them not only with potential buyers but also with investors, venture capitalists’ and corporate to integrate them in the defence economy

With an average of 100 events and outreach program every year here at World Trade Centre, Mumbai, every other day you will find us working to accelerate trade, export diversification, and foreign investor engagement. I am hopeful that 2026 will be no different than this

Vijay Kalantri Just as I said, every year we try to build on the legacy of the previous year. Even before we stepped in the new year, WTC Mumbai had scheduled summits, programs and events which will further our goal of connecting business globally. Starting from January, we will host a Vintage Car Exhibition where for the first time, all 7 Rolls Royce Phantom cars along with hundreds of others precious vintage four wheelers will hit the WTC tarmac attracting footfall and car enthusiasts. In the coming months we will also be hosting Hon. Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman for the Finance and Innovation Summit in association with The Pioneer Subsequently, we have planned a special summit on Defense Exports, Manufacturing and capabilities to

TMS. What advice would you give to young leaders seeking to make an impact on trade, industry and institutional leadership?

Vijay Kalantri For young leaders who wish to make an impact in trade, industry and institutional leadership, three messages are particularly important. First, build depth, not just visibility: understand trade policy, logistics, finance, technology and geopolitics in detail, because decisions in this space have long term implications for competitiveness and employment Those who combine knowledge with integrity and reliability will always be trusted by both government and industry, regardless of changing economic cycles

Second, think globally but act locally. Engage with international partners, attend trade missions and exhibitions, and leverage platforms like WTCs and industry associations, but always stay rooted in the needs of your region, your MSMEs and your workers. Real leadership lies in translating global opportunities into local jobs, technology absorption, and sustainable value creation

Third, invest in institutions and teams. Whether one is leading a company, a port, an association or a trade centre, the true legacy is the quality of the institution left behind Create systems, nurture young professionals, encourage ethical conduct and innovation, and remember that in trade and industry, trust is the most valuable currency – it takes years to build and only moments to lose

TMS. Can you share your journey into investment and entrepreneurship - especially what led you to take on the role of Chairman at One Tribe Global?

Jack Cresswell. My journey into investment and entrepreneurship began over two decades ago in the world of global mobile telecoms where I founded and later successfully exited a consumer business. This experience gave me deep insights into business innovation and the power of technology to scale solutions. From there, I transitioned into early-stage investment into pioneering FinTech and GreenTech ventures, including regenerative impact investing, leading me to first invest in One Tribe (onetribe.com) back in 2019.

What drew me to the role at One Tribe was the company's unique position at the intersection of technology, climate action, and business solutions. One Tribe's platform

seamlessly integrates climate impact into commerce, enabling businesses to fund verified rainforest protection and carbon projects at scale. Aligning with my mission to build an "Earth Positive" economy—one that fully accounts for nature—felt like a natural evolution. Joining as Chairman allowed me to guide strategic direction while leveraging my expertise in risk, innovation, and sustainable finance to accelerate global impact.

TMS. One Tribe operates at the intersection of climate action, carbon management, and business value creation. What part of that mission resonates most with you as Chairman?

Jack Cresswell. The part that resonates most deeply with me is the creation of genuine business value through authentic climate action. Too often, sustainability efforts are siloed as "cost centers" or mere compliance exercises. One Tribe flips this script by making climate impact visible, verified, and valuable—driving customer loyalty, brand differentiation, and revenue growth for partners. As someone who's spent my career bridging finance and innovation, I see enormous potential in embedding nature into economic systems. One Tribe's approach—using tech to connect everyday transactions to high-integrity carbon projects—creates a flywheel: businesses reduce risk, meet science-based targets, and share transparent impact with stakeholders, all while funding rainforest protection that stores massive amounts of CO2 and preserves biodiversity. This isn't charity; it's smart, scalable capitalism that aligns profit with planetary health. It resonates because it proves doing the right thing can—and should—fuel business success

TMS. Technology and data are increasingly critical in sustainability efforts - how does One Tribe leverage innovation to support measurable impact?

Jack Cresswell One Tribe is built on innovation from the ground up. Our Climate Action Platform uses an API that integrates directly with e-commerce, payment systems, and business operations, allowing automatic funding of verified projects with every transaction or sale. This makes climate action frictionless and embedded in core business flows

Key innovations include:

Ÿ Real-time tracking and dashboards: Businesses get live data on trees protected, CO2 stored, and project-specific impact, all backed by leading registries and science.

Ÿ Portfolio building tools: We curate high-integrity offsets (nature-based removals, renewable energy, restoration) to minimize risk and align with sciencebased targets

Ÿ Customer engagement features: Verified impact pages, widgets, and incentives that turn sustainability into a marketing advantage increasing conversions, loyalty, and stakeholder trust

Ÿ Data-driven verification: Partnering with top carbon scientists and standards (e g , Verra, Gold Standard), we ensure every contribution delivers measurable, auditable results like protecting endangered rainforests that sequester carbon far more efficiently than new planting.

This tech stack turns abstract "sustainability" into concrete, shareable proof, empowering thousands of brands to achieve net-zero goals with transparency and scale

TMS. With climate policy and market dynamics changing rapidly, where do you see the biggest opportunities for growth over the next 5 years?

Jack Cresswell The next five years will see explosive growth in mandatory reporting, consumer demand for transparency, and voluntary carbon markets maturing into high-integrity systems. The biggest opportunities lie in:

Ÿ Integration with regulated frameworks: As policies like CSRD (EU), SEC rules, and science-based targets become standard, businesses will need seamless tools for Scope 3 emissions and insets. One Tribe's platform is primed to help companies not just offset, but embed avoidance and reduction through nature-based solutions

Ÿ E-commerce and consumer-facing scale: With ecoconscious shoppers willing to pay premiums for sustainable brands, automating impact per purchase will drive massive adoption potentially onboarding tens of thousands of online brands globally

Ÿ Corporate net-positive ambitions: Beyond net-zero, leaders are aiming for "net positive " Protecting existing rainforests (which store 100x more carbon than new trees) offers cost-effective, high-impact pathways, especially with rising demand for biodiversity credits

Ÿ Emerging tech synergies: Blockchain for traceable credits, AI for optimized portfolios, and exponential tools to include nature in global accounting systems

Overall, the opportunity is in democratizing access: making enterprise-grade climate action affordable and automatic for SMEs, while delivering outsized planetary benefits. One Tribe is positioned to lead this shift, protecting billions of trees and enabling true business-led regeneration

TMS. Scan2card is a QR code and visiting card scanning app that turns paper leads into digital leads. How did your entrepreneurial journey begin, and what inspired you to start Scan2card?

Sourabh Solanki My entrepreneurial journey started from a very practical challenge I experienced during exhibitions, conferences, and networking events. Despite collecting dozens or even hundreds of visiting cards, following up effectively was always a struggle leads were scattered, data was lost, and timely connections were missed. I realized that while networking was happening offline, lead management needed to be smarter and digital. That insight led to the creation of Scan2card a simple yet powerful solution that transforms paper leads into organized digital contacts and helps professionals stay connected through follow-ups and virtual meetings.

TMS. Scan2card plays a critical role in exhibitions, conferences, and corporate networking. How do you ensure the app keeps pace with evolving industry trends and user expectations?

Sourabh Solanki We stay deeply connected with event professionals, sales teams, and business leaders who actively network. Their feedback directly influences our product roadmap. We continuously refine Scan2card to make it faster, more intuitive, and more valuable whether it’s improving scanning accuracy, simplifying contact management, or enhancing follow-up workflows. By observing how networking behavior is changing and aligning with digital-first expectations, we ensure Scan2card remains relevant and future-ready

Sourabh Solanki, CEO, Scan2card Networkinghappensoffline, butleadmanagementmust besmart, digital, andinstant

TMS. What future innovations or enhancements are you planning for Scan2card in the next three years?

Over the next three years, our focus is on making Scan2card a complete networking and lead-engagement platform. This includes advanced CRM integrations, AIdriven lead insights, automated follow-up reminders, and deeper analytics to help users track conversion effectiveness. We also plan to strengthen video conferencing and real-time engagement features, making it easier for professionals to move from first contact to meaningful conversations seamlessly

TMS. What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs and professionals in the events, networking, and digital solutions space?

Sourabh Solanki My advice is to start by solving a real problem one you’ve personally experienced. In fastmoving spaces like events and digital networking, simplicity and usability matter more than complexity

Build solutions that save time, improve efficiency, and add clear value. Stay open to feedback, evolve continuously, and focus on long-term relationships rather than quick wins

Consistency, trust, and innovation are what truly drive sustainable success.

WhyWasteWednesdays: WhereCommunities ChooseChange.

TMS. What first pushed you to turn a personal concern about waste into a structured movement like Why Waste Wednesdays? Was there a moment that made you feel this had to become a collective mission rather than an individual effort?

Dr. Ruby Makhija. My journey began inside my own colony, Navjeevan Vihar, where I realised that even educated urban communities struggled with something as basic as segregating their waste. In 2018, when we conducted the baseline study with the Enactus IIT Delhi team, the gap between perception and practice became striking — while most residents believed they were environmentally conscious, actual segregation at source was almost negligible. That mismatch was a turning point for me. The day we declared mandatory segregation in January 2019, after countless doorto-door sessions with residents, domestic helps, garbage collectors, and housekeeping staff, I saw something shift.

Dr. Ruby Makhija

People were not unwilling — they were simply uninformed or unstructured. When the entire colony came together and we hit 100% segregation, I knew this change could not stay limited to one neighbourhood. That is when Why Waste Wednesdays transformed from a personal conviction into a structured platform — one that could take this model of community ownership, awareness, and accountability to many more spaces. The “moment” was simply this: realising that systems don’t change because of rules, they change because communities decide they will

TMS. Your foundation works at the intersection of community behaviour, sustainability education, and circulareconomy practices. How do you bridge that gap between household-level habits and broader systemic change?

Dr. Ruby Makhija. Our approach has always been “awareness-to-action ” People change when systems around them also change. So we design interventions that operate both inside the home and outside it. At the household level, we begin with behaviour change — door-to-door sensitisation, training domestic helps, hand-holding residents, children, and housekeeping staff. This is how Navjeevan Vihar achieved and sustained 100% segregation, composting, and zero-plastic events

To link this to systemic transformation, we build circular systems around them:

Ÿ RRR Centres that convert discarded items into reusable or upcycled products, while simultaneously supporting SHGs and relief systems

Ÿ PaperLoop, where institutions exchange waste paper for recycled paper products, creating a visible loop of value

Ÿ Project Vikalp, India’s largest “borrow a cloth bag” network, with over 1.75 lakh bags in circulation — making behaviour change effortless by shifting the marketplace itself.

Ÿ Zero-waste events, including at Rashtrapati Bhavan, showing that even massive gatherings can become models of circularity

By building systems where sustainable choices are the easier choices, communities automatically transition from intention to implementation

That is how individual habits begin to shape city-level outcomes

TMS. You often translate complex ideas — segregation, composting, zero-waste — into everyday action for communities. Is there a story from the field that stayed with you, one that captures the real impact of this work on people’s lives?

Dr. Ruby Makhija One story that always stays with me is from our Sunday Special Collection Drive in Navjeevan Vihar. Every week, residents drop off old clothes, books, utensils, plastic, e-waste, floral waste, and even used cooking oil. All of this is reused, upcycled, or sent to authorised recyclers. What appears like a simple donation ritual is, in reality, a deep cultural shift

into 3000+ cloth bags — each initiative touching lives far beyond the environmental narrative. Sustainability becomes real when people feel it in their everyday lives — in pride, opportunity, and community belonging

TMS. As someone shaping the conversation on urban sustainability, what shifts do you believe Indian cities most urgently need — whether in mindset, policy, or market design — to truly move toward a zero-waste future?

I remember a domestic help who picked a set of children’s books from the Neki ki Deewar. A few weeks later, she told me her daughter had started reading every night and now wanted to “become a teacher.” That moment made me realise that waste management is not just about the environment — it is about dignity, redistribution, access, and aspiration.

Another powerful moment was watching the women ’ s SHG convert our donated newspapers into envelopes and bags, giving them livelihood and agency. Similarly, floral waste turned into dhoop cones, and surplus cloth upcycled

Dr. Ruby Makhija. Indian cities need three parallel transformations:

1. A Mindset Shift: From ‘throwing away’ to ‘owning your waste’

Urban residents often delegate responsibility — to government agencies, workers, or systems. But segregation, composting, litter-free public spaces, and plastic reduction require citizen ownership

2. Systemic Simplification: Make sustainable choices frictionless

Policies must be matched by infrastructure: segregated collection systems, localised composting, RRR centres, easy-return models like Vikalp, and recycling linkages. When sustainability is convenient, participation scales automatically.

3. Market Transformation: Build a vibrant circular economy

Cities must actively create markets for recycled products, upcycled goods, compost, recycled paper, and secondary resources. Initiatives like PaperLoop, recycled plastic playground equipment, and upcycled cloth bags show how waste becomes a resource.

India’s move toward zero-waste cities will not be technology-led alone — it will be people-led, communitysupported, and system-enabled

The Thailand Convention and

Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) announced its 5-year sustainability mission to drive the Thai MICE industry towards carbon neutrality and net-zero carbon emissions. The goal is to support events that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 20,000 tons of CO2 equivalent (TonCO₂e) by 2030. This goal reflects the commitment to sustainable development in Thailand's MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry

Dr. Supawan Teerarat, Director of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), stated that focusing on reducing the environmental impact of events in Thailand aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and supports the government's sustainable development strategy. This promotes the concrete contribution of the Thai MICE industry to the country's sustainable growth. In the past fiscal year 2025, the Thai MICE industry reduced and avoided carbon dioxide emissions by 2,445.97 TonCO₂e from a total of 232 events, compared to 780 TonCO₂e in fiscal year 2024. This 313% growth in carbon dioxide emission reduction confirms the Thai MICE industry's commitment to managing environmentally friendly activities.

TCEB Announcesits 5-Year Sustainability Mission

To achieve this goal, TCEP (Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau) has revised the requirements for bidders and project proposals Event organizers are now required to plan events as carbon-neutral events, calculating greenhouse gas emissions and implementing carbon offsetting measures. They must also obtain certification or comply with additional guidelines from TCEP. Furthermore, TCEP encourages event organizers to offset carbon emissions by obtaining carbon credits from greenhouse gas reduction projects in Thailand, ensuring that the event's net-zero emissions are achieved.

Simultaneously, TCEP (Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau) supports event organizers in achieving sustainability goals by providing access to practical tools These include a preliminary carbon footprint calculator for mitigating event impacts, the Zero Carbon application developed by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) for tracking emission reductions, a network of auditors and certifiers for emission reduction standards, and access to domestic carbon credit programs to support efficient carbon offsetting

CLEAR launches eGates at MIA ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

CLEAR, the secure identity

company, launched its biometric eGates at two of Miami International Airport’s busiest passenger screening checkpoints in December, just before the airport’s bustling winter holiday travel season and ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 games

With eGates, CLEAR+ members can verify their identity in under five seconds, bypassing the TSA podium and proceeding directly to physical screening. This innovation represents a significant leap in modernizing security checkpoints with automation – especially critical during the holiday travel rush, as TSA recently recorded its busiest day ever, screening more than 3.1 million travelers. Automated

eGates are designed to provide a scalable and secure solution that expedites the passenger screening experience and enhances security. The innovation builds on the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) efforts to modernize and streamline U.S. airport security checkpoints, with a specific focus on enhancing security, hospitality, and the passenger experience

This first-of-its-kind pilot represents an innovative public–private partnership that enables TSA to scale identity verification and streamline airport processing just in time for the World Cup. With more than 20 million international visitors expected to fly to the U.S. for the tournament and

domestic travel surging through U.S. host cities, checkpoint infrastructure will face unprecedented pressure

CLEAR’s eGates are designed to conduct real-time biometric verification, matching a traveler’s facial image with their identity document and boarding pass. TSA retains complete operational control: triggering gate access, conducting security vetting, and enforcing government security requirements CLEAR transmits only limited data, such as a live photo, boarding pass, ID photo used for enrollment, and identity information. Once identity and clearance are confirmed, passengers proceed directly to physical screening, bypassing the TSA podium while still undergoing all security screening
