The ERASMUS scheme of student mobility, an established institution/practice within the EU, has always been about giving students from all over the continent the opportunity to travel and study outside their home countries. Consistently, testimonies from participating students have been very positive, rich with accounts of new experiences and familiarization with new & different ways of doing things at the level of academia. But ERASMUS is so much more than that: most students have found the experience of living abroad (some for the first time) positively enriching in terms of personal and professional development, and surely one they will fondly look back upon in the years to come. Our very successful exchange scheme consistently enables our own students to visit and acquaint themselves with a number of European countries; but it has also resulted in a steady yearly input of 80-90 guest students! Part of the unique experience of studying at ASFA as an ‘Erasmite’ is our students’ access both to our high-standard infrastructure, as well as to the School’s Annexes – beautifully located workshop areas in various parts of Greece. It is exactly the work of all people involved in the various aspects of the ERASMUS scheme that the present exhibition draws on; and the fact that this is the second year it has taken place is both a testament to its popularity with our students and a sign that it is on its way to becoming a School institution. Let us then look back upon the work done in the past year, enjoy it, and learn from it so that next year we can say that, yes, we’ve kept improving!

France, 1986. I chose painting and drawing for expression and communication. This choice was made simply by feeling aware of the world or of life in general. My work is constantly developing and evolves with each painting. I choose mostly to paint figuratively, trying to fit personal ideas into this shape, as well as abstract things, that I see, or that I simply feel. I would like to paint in a simple way, surely; without conceptual or contemporary concerns, which in my opinion kill means of free expression in many ways. After 4 years of painting and drawing I am reconsidering aspects such as contrast, shape and the relation between painting and spectator. I would like more love, and more communication in my painting, regaining a certain simplicity and clarity. If one day I can do that, I’ll find my way of painting.

Antwerp, Belgium. 1988 Mathias Goyvaerts is an artist who lives and studies in Antwerp. At the moment he is a student at the Royal academy of fine arts in Antwerp, Belgium. He usually works with clay and plaster, but for the moment he is also experimenting with other materials such as blow-up crocodiles etc. His works go by names such as ‘struggling with blow-up crocodiles’, ‘the danger in circus acts’, ‘death = everywhere’, and ‘Death is watching us closely’, and he works with classical themes, anecdotes, and details in small work, creating horror vacuous works. The most important things in his career are the projects with fellow students and artists. Such as ‘Province project “Hangar Park Nord”in 2008’ and ‘20eventi : International art project in Italy in 2009’ . The opportunity to do international projects has a big input and influence on his vision and work. Mathias Goyvaerts

Austria. 1987 I study art and mathematics in order to become a teacher in both subjects. Besides my artistic work at university I have already participated in a lot of projects to work together with different groups of people to make them understand art more easily. It is very interesting how people react on different kinds of art and to form this reaction then to another work.
