01 INTRODUCTION The Brief and the Project

THE BRIEF The brief was outlined in a letter from film director, Asha Nyimbili, asking for an architect to design the film set for the opening and closing scenes of her movie.

The movie is about a group of 5 friends going on a journey together, with an unexpected twist in the plot.

The opening and closing scenes are are in the house that the main character, Kai, and his two architect parents live. The director described the house as representing the personality of the family and asks for a set to reflect that. The letter describes how the camera moves through each scene, guiding the reader though the house to gain an understanding of the layout and design of the house.

THE PROJECT In a team, design a set and make a model of the house described in the brief for the opening and closing scene.

02 STORYBOARD & DRAWINGS A collection of storyboard drawings, moody images and initial sketches

In order to understand the layout of the house and the organisation of the rooms, lists and diagrams were created. When reading about a particular room or feature that was hard to visualise, thumbnail sketches were drawn to understand what the room might look like in comparison to the description.

Following the directions of the camera and combining it with the thumbnail sketches enabled a storyboard to be created.

STORYBOARD

PRECEDENTS The brief describes that the main character’s parents, who designed the family house, were inspiration by other architect’s designs, specifically Alvar and Aino Aalto, Peter Zumthor and Arne Jacobsen. In order to most accurately depict the design of the house, research was gathered to understand particular design aesthetics applied by the architects.

After carrying out this research, concept drawings and moody images were drawn of the house which also incorporated the design styles of the architects mentioned.

This is the first initial model made by the group. The model is made out of basic blocks to help visualise the potential size, hierarchy of space and massing the house.

By doing this, the group was able to alter previous floor plans to improve the proportions of the spaces.

The group compared floor plans, all of which had similar aspects.

The group decided to use my plans and alter them to include aspects of their floor plans which worked well for the design.

The group created models to visualise what the exterior would possibly look like, and a model to visualise how the wall thickness may affect the space and ensure load bearing walls were in the correct places.

FLOOR PLANS AND MODELS

The main problem the group faced was deciding the layout of the ground floor, specifically where the stairs would go.

To overcome this problem, the floor plans focusing on the ground floor were developed with small adjustments. Eventually the group came to a decision to go slightly against the brief by placing the stairs in the same section.

To make sure the ground floor would function as an adequate space to move around, I created a scale drawing and model of the ground floor.

FINAL MODEL CONCEPT

When the group decided on the floor plans for each floor, the group create a final concept model. This further helped the group to visualise the exterior of the structure and also helped to visualise if the structure met to the description in the brief.

When the group was ready to create the final model, Matthew used the scale floor plans that I created and the scale model that he made and made a 3D wire frame of the model in AutoCad. Once this was complete, I used the 3D wireframe model to create pieces that could be laser cut and constructed to make the model.

I made the model using 2 3mm plywood pieces glued together.

This accurately represents the wall thickness at this scale. Non load bearing walls were made with 1 3mm piece of plywood. To replicate windows, tracing paper was glued between the plywood sheets.

Matthew then created the landscape using black mount board to replicate the contours of the topography.

Lower Floor The lower floor contains the snug, a storage room/garage, a guest house and a BBQ area.

This part of the house sits within the earth.

Ground Floor The ground floor contains the living room, study, lobby, W/C and utility room, kitchen and orangery.

The living room is a double height space. I created the floor plan for the 1st floor so that the double height space could also be created where the piano would go to improve the acoustics for the instrument and also make it a statement piece when looking form the orangery into the living room.

The orangery is a triple height space which makes it the centre of the home throughout the house and allows the upper floors, especially the 2nd floor to have a lot of natural light.

The study is accessed through a bookshelf, making the space adjustable depending on the level of privacy needed.

First Floor The first floor contains the master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and walk in wardrobe, a landing, gallery, family bathroom, 2 bedrooms and a balcony.

The balcony and the master bedroom both look over the orangery. The large landing accommodates space for storage. The gallery corridor leads to a door to access outside.

Second Floor The second floor contains the office as well as a reading nook. Glass floors and a balcony looking into the orangery brings light into the smaller space.

REFLECTIVE REVIEW Review of the project and my involvement in the team

The project brought challenges to the group, both positive and negative.

Whilst we are all friends, the workload wasn’t shared across the board. Matthew and I were the driving force for the group and carried the workload. Yesu and Hafid were supportive, however, they often waited for me to tell them what to do.

Matthew and I are both strong minded. Whilst we sometimes worked well together, there were instances where we would clash.

From this, we both learned to delegate and compromise to achieve the task.

A frustrating part of the task was when we were altering the floor plans. The group agreed that the floor plans I made were the most suitable for the design, but changes had to be made. Whilst I agreed with a lot of the changes, there were other changes that I did not agree with. Matthew wanted to move the stairs because the dimensions were not suitable. It took me a while to understand why the stairs needed to be moved. Matthew made designs to accommodate the change, but I felt that they did not fit well with the design. I think this caused Matthew to feel frustrated, but I am happy that we didn’t go with those changes as it would not benefit the design or the function. We eventually understood that we had to go against the brief on this point, allowing us to come up with a solution.

Overall, I think that the work we produced fits the brief description and looks aesthetically pleasing. The group members each brought skills to the group: Yesu is excellent at drawing, Hafid can make nice renders, Matthew is great with autocad and I am good at making plans and laser cutting. We learned about ways we could each improve, especially in making decisions, delegating and compromising.

05 HOUSE PROJECT 2. House Design

THE BRIEF Asha Nyimbili, the director of the movie for the previous project, is asking the same architect to design the a house for her family. Nyimbili really liked the house design for the movie set and is asking for a similar house to be designed for her family.

The site is located in Salford Quays, a busy, redeveloped residential and commercial area. Nyimili has expressed a need for a space that is private and large enough for her family, and their hobbies.

In order to achieve the clients’ requirements, an extensive site analysis was carried out in order to determine the building layout and orientation. The data from the site analysis then influenced how the building would interact with the site and its surrounding context.

Research was then gathered to crete precedents that would influence the design of the house. Form, functionality and materialy were taken into account in order to find a form that would be both comfortable to live in an aesthetically pleasing.

By applying the site analysis and the precedent studies research, the form of the site was created that provided a family home that meets the clients requirements.

THE PROJECT Design a house for the Nyimbili family, making sure to incorporate requested features.

The house should be a private place for a family where they can each enjoy a personal space.

It is unknown how deep the foundations are under the vegetation. However, it is known that the site is built on granite foundations.

PRECEDENTS The brief describes a house similar to the house from ‘Angels of Our Better Selves’:

“The film version seemed to capture so well the actual characteristics of our family life.”

To recapture the style and design of the house, research was carried out about the architects that previously inspired the design of the house: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Peter Zumthor and Arne Jacobsen.

CONCEPTS

In order to develop the shape and layout of the house, the models that were made for the film set were manipulated and moved around. This enabled the chance to view the model from a different perspective and better incorporate the needs of the client by changing and rearranging particular spaces with the focus on the particular spaces the client liked in the film set design (namely the living room, kitchen and double height space).

Rearranging the previous models however, did not create a layout that was harmonious with the site and surrounding context. The shape of the layout seemed disjointed and did not allow for the amount of privacy the clients wanted. It also did not take advantage of the views towards the south-west as well as the sunlight coming from that direction.

However, when referring back to the site analysis, the shape of Salford Quays itself was used as inspiration on to make the layout more balanced with the site and more coordinated with the surrounding architecture.

The shapes of the docks (outlined in black) determined the general shape of the layout: two wings pointing towards the south-west view.

VISUALISATION Whilst the layout of the house was created to ensure the exterior is harmonious with the site, the layout was also influenced by the type of spaces the interior needed.

From the research gathered from the precedent studies, a feature that was common among the different buildings was the focus in using the architecture to create zones and frames.

PETER ZUMTHOR THE THERME VALS

Whilst the orientation of the structure frames the south-west view of the water, the view from inside the house (particularly in the middle) may not have access to this view. In order to change this, the architecture in the centre of the house creates frames and zones so that each area can have an event or a unique feature.

These initial sketches of what the interior is envisioned to be show how parts of the layout need to be arranged in order to create a comfortable family space, whilst creating views inside the building.

The orangery is double height which creates a transitional space between the ground floor and the 1st floor.

CONCEPT FLOOR PLANS

In order to design the building to scale, floor plans were drawn on Autocad. The first floor plans (top row) were designed in context to the site to gage placement and orientation. The building is oriented so that the two wings point towards the south-west view.

The floor plans were altered many times in order to meet the clients needs. In the second row, the living room area was moved from the top corner of the plan to the bottom wing. This was done so that the social area of the house could be kept separate from the bedrooms and to also make greater use of the view and sunlight that would be on that side of the house.

When this change was made, a space opened up in the back corner which was then used to create a bar area with access to the roof garden (third row).

ROOF Initially a pitched roof was going to be used for the house. The pitched roof however gave a top heavy and unbalanced impression.

To overcome this, a model was made to experiment different roof types.

The cardboard model allowed for different forms to be created by bending and twisting the material.

This led to an angular form being created that complemented and followed the rhythm of the floor plan.

RAMP AND STAIRS Whilst the client does have a dog that struggles with stairs, the main purpose of including a ramp was to have an ‘architectural walk’, similar to Villa Savoye. The idea of the ramp is that it would transcend the viewer through the architecture whilst also experiencing the views.

However, the ramp took up valuable space and was also impractical. Whilst it was a nice and interesting feature, it was not practical for family living. For this, the ramp was replaced with stairs that incorporated the idea of having an event.

The event for the final iteration was having the stairs transcend the viewer through the orangery.

This top row shows the various designs that were considered when creating a ramp and staircase. The design of the ramp was altered by the maximum 1:12 ratio that had to be applied to the ramp, according to rules and regulations.

The second and third row show the placement of the ramp in elevation.

The ramp was moved to different parts of the house to try to accommodate the length of the ramp with its required ratio.

Due to the ramp having to be 28m, it was discarded as it not longer served a purpose and did not have room to accommodate an event or add to the aesthetics of the house.

Instead of using a ramp, stairs were added (fourth row).

The stairs were altered to accommodate the size of the house and height of the ceilings.

The design also incorporated the idea that the stairs were not to be put in a corner, but to be used as a feature for the house.

The solution to this was to put the stairs in the orangery. This made the orangery, which connects to the entrance and the dining room, a central transitional space in the house.

CANOPY A canopy was needed for the entrance. The house has 2 entrances: the main entrance into the foyer, and a side entrance into the office space for clients to use. A model was used to experiment different types of canopies that would not only be functional, but a part of the aesthetics of the building.

The design of the canopy was influenced by this train bridge found on Ring Road.

The bridge is made from a rust coloured steel with ridges that follow the shape of the bridge creating wave. This design was incorporated in making the canopy as the ridges created an industrial aesthetic form that could privatise a space.

A few of the designs were also drawn on AutoCad to get an idea of size and dimensions.

The bottom left drawing shows the canopy on the right elevation of the building. The bottom right drawing is an axonometric drawing of the canopy.

MATERIALITY Salford Quays is based in an industrial city. In order to recognise its history and the surrounding context of the site, the house will be rendered in an industrial style.

Since the site is part of the shipping docks, a material that could be used to tie the building to the site is repurposed corrugated metal from shipping containers. This will coordinate the building with the surrounding context which also uses corrugated metal and steel. This also promotes and increase sustainability by reusing materials.

These precedents were chosen because they coordinate a mixed use of materials to create a cohesive render.

The site’s surrounding context includes red brick, corrugated metal, concrete and steel. These precedents as well as the buildings surrounding the site show how the mixed materials can be used to unify the architecture whilst creating a hierarchy of space.

These precedents show how the use of metal can create focal points for the architecture.

The precedent on the left is painted concrete. This material was chosen because of its durability in a harsh climate.

The red trimmings contrast heavily creating focused frames for the building.

The rusted metal sheets (bottom middle) are also a durable material. The sculpture (bottom right) is found on Salford Quays. The material links the sculpture to the history of the site.

The house should incorporate some of this material to tie it to the history of the site.

The building is rendered in a white concrete on the roof and 1st floor. The ground floor and lower ground floor are rendered in repurposed corrugated metal. The canopy is rendered in a repurposed steel frame. These materials are durable and coordinate the building with the surrounding context.

The model was made using 3mm plywood. This material was used to replicate the thickness of the walls and foundations.

The windows are designed to sit in the frame of the house.

By bringing the windows further inwards, the frame provides solar shading. Deeper windowsill also increases privatization as it is harder for onlookers to see inside.

Ground Floor The ground floor is split into two separate wings which are connected by a large entrance and a double height orangery.

The top wing contains a double height workshop/garage and an apartment (for the eldest daughter and her partner).

The apartment has a bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, an open plan living room, kitchen and work space. Bifolding doors lead out to the covered outdoor space and windows along the living room have views out into the courtyard.

The bottom wing contains the workspace for the parents and a cinema room. In order to have a separate space from the living area of they house, a side entrance, covered by the canopy, can be used for clients to access the office and the meeting room. A kitchen and bathroom are also placed next to the work area so that clients do not have access to the rest of the house. Considering the client works in film, it was appropriate to include a cinema room that can be used by clients and the family.

The ground floor is raised 2.5m above street level. The garden surrounding the ground floor has also been raised to the same level.

This was done to increase the privacy of the house and garden which sit along a public footpath by raising the house above average height.

The canopy provides shelter, privacy and an aesthetic element to the house. The canopy covers the walkway to the second entrance which accesses the office space.

The canopy acts as a block for noise pollution and weather.

The main entrance leads to a double height orangery which floods the space with light. There are minimal windows on the front facade in order to: maintain privacy, block out the buildings next to the house and to give an element of surprise when entering the house. The orangery looks out onto the courtyard and can be used to access the courtyard. The bifolding doors provide ventilation and brings the outside inside.

FINAL MODEL

1st Floor The 1st floor is split into two separate wings which are connected by a large dining room. The floor plan was split into two part to provide one section for relaxation and privacy and the other for functional family use and socialisation.

The top wing contains the master bedroom, connecting balcony, a walk in wardrobe with a window seat, and an ensuite bathroom. Next are the childrens rooms and a family bathroom.

Connecting this wing to the dining room is a bar area. This is separated by a bar built into a load bearing wall. The bar area contains a pool table and chairs as well as mezzanine style staircase to access the roof.

The dining room connects the top wing to the bottom wing. The bottom wing contains a large open plan living room and kitchen. The living room has a large L-shaped sofa, big enough for socialising, as well as a small table and chairs and a window seat that can be used as an extra seating arrangement. Next to the living room is the music room. These rooms are placed along the side closest to the water because of the noise pollution from the water sports centre. This allows the bedrooms to be placed further back, away from the noise.

The main focus for the 1st floor was to provide views and natural light, and to make the dining table the center of the house. The brief comments that there is a large dining table and the the clients often have guests at their house. The dining table being the center of the house provides a focus on socialisation.

The area where the table is placed is also ideal for evening meals as the light coming from the south-west will funnel through the courtyard and light the area during sunset.

The living room, is sunken by 300mm to separate the space, creating zones which makes this space feel more intimate and less busy compared to the kitchen and dining space. The living room and kitchen is placed in the bottom wing which will fill the space up with the morning sun which is good for energy in the morning.

The client wanted a private space to play the piano in order to relax after work. This is placed in the bottom wing to reduce the noise travelling towards the bedrooms. It is also placed with a view looking out onto the water as this will create a peaceful place for the client to relax.

The lower ground floor, accessed by the driveway, contains the covered car park (big enough for three cars), storage space, and a double height garage/workshop with stairs that can be used to access the ground floor.

The lower ground floor is at the same level as the street to allow the cars to access the space as well as making it functional to move the motorbike and mountain bikes in and out of the garage. A covered walkway can then be used to access the main entrance to the house.

The clients also have space in the garage/workshop to include an elevator if they wish to make the house more accessible.

Stairs and Orangery The stairs are placed in the orangery as a functional way of accessing the 1st floor and as a way of giving the stairs an event. The stair’s function is not just a means of access, but a way of providing an architectural walk up the building. The angles from the top wing can be seen as well as sections of the house that can be seen through the windows. A view of the courtyard can also been seen at all times on the staircase. The orangery, which will be filled with plants, will give the impression of the staircase actually being outside, rather than just inside an enclosed space.

The orangery provides a double height space, and where the ceiling is at its lowest on the 1st floor, portrays the impression that the space is larger that it is.

Roof The roof has a minimum pitch of 12.5 degrees and a flat roof section. The angular roof continues the rhythm and movement of the structure. This creates a unity in the form and aesthetics.

The roof helps in massing the building by creating an illusion on the front facade which makes the building look taller than it actually is. The roof also affects the interior space by changing the ceiling height in irregular places, creating different volumes in each room.

The roof was also designed to included a space that could accessed from the first floor, which can be used as a garden that offers views across the water.

The angular parts of the roof lift up around the roof garden creating a safe barrier as well as increasing privacy.

Canopy The canopy wraps around the front and left elevation, covering the entrance, second entrance and the walkway from the garage.

The canopy includes ridges that hold the structure as well as reduce the noise pollution by providing more surface area to absorb sound.

The design of the canopy acts like louvers which allows light to enter the windows on the ground floor whilst protecting the user form the wind and increasing privacy. The canopy will create shadows which move throughout the day as the sun path changes.
