PART 1: BARTON AERODROME VISITORS CENTRE

Design a visitors centre with a two-scopic regime for plane spottersforBartonAerodrome(City Airport).

Location:ChatMoss,Irlam

VISION MONTAGE

● Create a centre for plane spotters and thecommunity

● Create an atmosphere that reflects the historyoftheairport

● Provide a space where the community can interact with the site and the aircrafts

These precedents look at how the view inside the building and outside the buildingcanbeframes. Itisalsoimportanttonotethematerials used in the buildings. THe timbre provides a warm atmosphere. The shape of the timber also directs the eye towardstheview.

KEY SPATIAL STUDIES

Both precedents have a slanted curtain wall. This will be a key part of the design as it allows plane watchers a wider view of the aircrafts. This part of the building will be North-facing so will have minimal glare from the sun.

This precedent shows the value of having a private space. In order to have a much floor space in the hall tomakeitmultifunctional, privatepodswillbeadded above the hall. These floating pods will be used as a privatespacespecificforplanwatchers.

KEY SPATIAL SEQUENCE

● Analysis of the site shows the direction of the views for planespotting.

● This analysis directs the shape of the centre in order to maximisetheviewingarea.

● Thetwoseparateboxesrepresentpublicspaceandprivate space.

● The building is angled to match the angle of the runway. This will maximise the area for viewing planes attakeoffandlanding.

A 10x10m grid is used as the steel can reach a maximum length of 14m

MATERIALS:

● Concrete foundation

● Steel portal frame

● Timber cladding (interior)

● Cross laminated timber walls

● Curtain wall

THE CURLEW AND THE TWITCHER

KEY INFORMATION:

● Europe’s largest wading bird. Its flat feet help it to wade through wetlands and its curved beak is used to catch worms and insects in water and tall grass.

HABITAT:

● The curlew lives in open wetlands and its survival relies heavily on the conditions of moorlands and peat bogs. The curlew nests and spends most of its time in the open wetlands. It lays its eggs in an indentation in tall grass.

NEEDS FOR THE TWITCHER

● An area to watch the curlew from a safe distance that prevents disturbance to their habitat.

● Shelter to protect twitchers from the weather.

● A way to view the bird form several different angles, especially low to the ground.

PRECEDENT STUDIES /

Thishideprojectsoffthe path and uses timber to create directional lines. The timber structure is slantedforwardsandthe slatsinthewoodprovide gaps for birdwatchers to viewthebirds.

This small, compact designisefficientatusing spaceeffectively.Thebox featuresabuilt-inseating arrangement which maximises the usage of space inside the box. It alsoseparatesthesection offfromtheareafromthe busy room around it, providing a more private space.

This bird hide provides both an exterior and interiorspacetoviewthe surrounding landscape. Theseatsareliftedoffthe ground and are covered by the roof to protect usersfromtheweather.

Thesesculpturesshowthe simplicity of using the structure as the design. The concrete bridges the gap between man-made and the natural environment. The simple design reduces the amount of land and resources needed to createit.

BIRD HIDE

● The design is a sheltered tunnel that curves into a seating area.

● The design is low so that it does not frighten the curlew.

● In order to enter the bird hide, the bird watcher must duck down. This will slow down foot traffic around the hide.

SCOPIC REGIME

The seating area becomes a bench for a bird watcher to lie down, so they can lower themselves closer to the groundwherethecurlewis.

There is a space next to the bench thatcanbeused forviewingstanding upandforwheelchairaccess.
