2023 VISITOR’S GUIDE

2023 VISITOR’S GUIDE
Wetaskiwin is one of Alberta’s oldest cities, incorporated in 1906. The City’s name comes from Cree law wētaskīwin or wītaskīwin, meaning “coming, or being on the land together in peace and harmony.” A cultural hub located in central Alberta, our city offers all the amenities of life while maintaining a peaceful, connected atmosphere.
In Wetaskiwin, we are indebted to the ancestral keepers of these middle lands, for making peace with the newcomers who found home here. We are grateful to the stouthearted souls who braced hardships and saw richness in the soil. We fortunate few are the inheritors of common ground and the stewards of hard-won harmony.
Here and now, we find a life that balances ease and energy; people and progress; heritage and prosperity. Wetaskiwin lives in a region steeped in true frontier spirit where we see bright horizons stretching beyond imagination. Only a city this enveloped by nature lets you live in and fully appreciate the best of both worlds. All in a region steeped in true frontier spirit where we see bright horizons stretching beyond imagination.
We know the path to Wetaskiwin’s best future is rooted in the best of our past and that path is wide enough to walk side-by-side with everyone. Whoever you are, wherever you come from, we welcome you here. To revel in the unique richness, we share when we connect to find middle ground, together.
We are located on Treaty 6 Territory–the ancestral and traditional gathering place of the Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Ojibway, Saulteaux, Anishinaabeg, and many others whose histories, languages, and cultures continue to influence our community and way of life. We are grateful for the land’s blessings and teachings, as well as the Traditional Knowledge keepers and Elders who have always walked in harmony with the spirit of this land since time immemorial. Hai hai.
The roar of the engines and the high-tempo excitement of car racing may be an unexpected discovery in the hills of Wetaskiwin, but the city has been home to the Edmonton International Raceway at Wetaskiwin since 1964.
NASCAR’s only sanctioned race track in Western Canada, this quarter-mile, semi-banked oval track hosts weekly races during the summer season, including its’ signature event – The NASCAR Pinty’s Series – each summer.
In addition to the performances by professional drivers, the track offers “Drive a Race Car”, birthday parties and a variety of hands-on race track experiences for families, as well as corporate team-building events. EIR is also a well-respected collaborator for local charitable and community causes. For more information, visit EIR’s website at edmontonraceway.com.

Visiting downtown Wetaskiwin, seeing the original architecture of many legacy buildings still intact offers a direct connection to the pioneers and settlers that first invested to create this community. While not the only water tower that you’ll find in your travels of the prairies of Canada, Wetaskiwin’s iconic 10-storey landmark is a beacon to all who enter the city. Built in 1909 and completely refurbished in 2005 at the behest of passionate local citizens, the water tower continues to be among the city’s most iconic and welcoming features.
When Canada’s Diamond Jubilee was held in 1927, the residents of Wetaskiwin celebrated by erecting a cairn to mark the 60-year peace between the Nehiyawak (Cree) and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) Nations. Originally constructed and placed in the Peace Hills overlooking Wetaskiwin, the monument has been relocated to the green space next to Wetaskiwin’s iconic water tower where it is protected by municipal historic designation.
Connecting the country coast-to-coast was no easy feat for the pioneers of Canada. Long before the expansive highway networks connected cities and towns, local economies were nurtured by rail. In our region, the Central Railway served the residents of the area from 1913 until 1981. The Alberta Central Railway Museum was built as a re-creation of the 1907 Wetaskiwin CPR depot, offering an authentic experience of how passengers and freight made their way about the Alberta prairies. Open seasonally each summer, learn more at albertarailwaymuseum.com.
