Expoziția “Reverberații” a artistului Radu Șerban, a fost gândită și pusă în scenă de Maxim Dumitraș, directorul Muzeului de Artă Comparată Sîngeorz-Băi.

Lucrările autorului sunt dispuse într-o relație comparată cu opere din colecția muzeului semnate de artiștii: Ionel Cojocariu, Maxim Dumitraș, Suzana Fântânaru, Nicolae Fleissing, Alexandru Gavrilaș, Simion Moldovan, Monica Morariu, Leonard Răchită și Sava Stoianov.

Radu Șerban’s exhibition entitled “Reverberations” has been conceptualized and designed by Maxim Dumitraș, manager at the Sîngeorz-Băi Comparative Art Museum.

The author’s works are carefully arranged to be in a relation of direct comparison with works from the museum’s collection signed by the artists: Ionel Cojocariu, Maxim Dumitraș, Suzana Fântânaru, Nicolae Fleissing, Alexandru Gavrilaș, Simion Moldovan, Monica Morariu, Leonard Răchită and Sava Stoianov.

Evanescenţe artistice Radu Șerban este un artist pentru care pictura trebuie să determine atmosfera meditativă a clopotului care sfinţeşte cu sunetul său aerul unei zile, să înalţe prin tăcere, prin linişte interioară şi discreţia stilizată a formelor, să împace cu sine firea neobosită a omului. În spaţiul comparat al muzeului de la Sîngeorz-Băi lucrările sale determină surprinzătoare dialoguri interioare între sfințenia statică a tradiției și efervescența schimbătoare a artei contemporane.

Conversaţia sufletului cu materia pare să fie un obiectiv în care relicva trecutului se trasnfigurează cu religiozitate în universul creației artistice. Obiectul decontextualizat, extras din lumea sa reală, se reproiectează în instalaţii şi suprafeţe picturale care îi reinterpretează sensul. Energia artistică regenerează materia şi reface semnificația acesteia printr-o amplificare continuă a emoţiei în noua credinţă intelectuală a mileniului trei.

Sentimentul întâlnirii supranaturale se declanșează prin sensibilităţile metafizice ale picturii, iar religiozitatea tradițională devine o sacralitate a artei.

Puritatea perspectivală a albului destăinuie sub transparenţa cromaticilor artistice, inocenţa şi mai ales oportunitatea fuziunii dintre sacru şi profan sub auspiciile generoase ale picturii. Simplitatea devine o suficienţă desăvârşită ce se materializează prin suprafețe care stimulează sentimentul spațiilor deschise și infinite.

Impresia picturii în alb şi negru așterne un inevitabil sfumato ce intermediază între natural şi abstract, între lumea reală (diversă, colorată) şi suprarealismul reflectat în sfera spiritului uman.

Culoarea evocată prin transparenţe, umanizează câmpul rece şi distant al spaţiului atemporal al lumii purificate.

Fiecare picătură de culoare dinamizează compoziţiile şi umanizează chipurile transfigurate. Fiecare aşternere a albului imaculat purifică, simplifică şi transfigurează natura umană. În acest mod contopirea omului profan cu forţa supremă a universului se relevă prin metafizica artistică a creaţiei.

Evanescențele luminii pigmentare lasă amprente între figurativ şi abstract. Personaje generalisime cu văluri cromatice moderne enunță legile interne ale icoanelor nefăcute de mână. Patina timpului şi forţa hazardului lucrează prin amprente artistice care fac din neant un om sau sting în amalgamul cromatic figurile mărețe ale unor contemporani anonimi.

Lucrările satisfac pe de o parte setea de concret cu intuiţii formale, dar şi tendinţa de abstractizare universală.

Chipurile închipuite devin punctul de interes în jurul căruia pivotează atenţia compoziţiei; construim înţelegerea mesajului artistic pornind de la acest element „ochiul sufletului”. Din acest punct de vedere tendinţa de a înţelege relaţia dintre simbolismul figurat abstract și frontalismul privirii diafane devine o provocare care lucrează în spectatorul atras de liniştea simplă şi optimistă pe care o oferă cu generozitate artistul.

Texturile pensulației eliberate concurează vizual cu semnificaţia unei forme, a unui gest, a unei pleoape ori a unui contur. Chiar şi în obiectele în care figurativul este miniaturizat şi deformat până la caricatură forţa expresivă a desenului simbolist concurează contrastant cu textura naturală şi firească a lemnului, ori cu fibra rigidizată a pânzei. Privind aceste volume cezanniene descoperim cu stupoare că sacralitatea obiectuală refuză să moară și oricât de mult ne-am îndepărta de bizantinism prin expresionism, sentimentul sacralității există latent în mintea umană, unde se aşează preconceput la originea înţelegerii sensurilor artistice. În acest context instalaţiile cu obiecte tradiţionale, proiecţii şi happening devin combinaţii între spiritual şi real oferind pretexte multiplicatoare pentru înţelegerea omului postmodern. Radu Șerban a dobândit prin aceste instrumente un stil, o tehnică prin care poate să păşească pe limita subţire a expresionismului simbolist fără să piardă conversaţia sacralizată a câmpurilor cromatice reflexive - artistul cultivă în abstract energia picturală a sentimentului înălțător care împletește rugăciunea cu viața.

Arta lui Radu Șerban oferă evanescența unei sinapse, o conexiune între sensibilitatea spirituală a tradiției și logica plasticii contemporane. Statica dinamicului compoziţional şi dinamizările plastice ale staticului oferă forme simple de înţelegere a complexului creativ, a spiritului uman, prin sacralitatea de netăgăduit a artei.

Artistic evanescences Radu Șerban is an artist for whom painting must induce the meditative state of a church bell which consecrates air with its sound, must elevate through silence, through inner tranquility and the stylized discretion of the forms and must make man’s tireless nature at peace with itself. In the comparative space of the Sîngeorz-Băi museum his works determine surprising inner dialogues between the static sainthood of tradition and the ever-changing effervescence of contemporary art.

The conversation between soul and matter seems to be a goal in which relics of the past are faithfully transmuted into the universe of artistic creation.

The object which is taken out of context and extracted from the real world is projected once more within installations and painted surfaces that reinterpret its meaning. The artistic energy regenerates matter and rebuilds it’s meaning through a continual augmentation of the emotion within the new intellectual faith of the third millennium. The feeling of an out of this world meeting is set off through the metaphysical sensibility of the act of painting; the traditional religiousness is becoming the very sacred quality of art.

Underneath inspired chromatics, the purity of the white reveals innocence and chance for fusion between the sacred and the profane that takes place within the paintings’ generous boundaries. Simplicity becomes a perfect sufficiency that materializes itself through surfaces that inspire the feeling of open and infinite spaces. The impression of a black and white painting reveals an unavoidable sfumato effect that mediates between abstract and natural, between real world (that is diverse and colorful) and surreal.

The color called to mind through transparency humanizes the cold and distant field of atemporal space belonging to the purified world. Each drop of color galvanizes the compositions and humanizes the transfigured visages. Each laying of immaculate white purifies, simplifies and transfigures human nature.

Thusly the merging of profane man with the supreme power of the universe is shown through the artistic metaphysics of creation.

The evanescences of the tinted world leave their marks between figurative and abstract. General characters covered by modern chromatic veils state the internal laws of unmanufactured icons. The ravages of time and the power of

chance work through artistic impressions that create a man out of nothingness or quench the imposing visages of anonymous contemporaries inside chromatic mixtures.

On one hand, the works satisfy the thirst of concreteness by using formal intuitions, but also the tendency for universal abstracting. The envisaged visages become the focal point around which the compositional attention pivots; we build the understanding of artistic messages starting from this element, “the eye of the soul”. From this perspective, the tendency to understand the relation between the figurative abstract simbolism and the frontal translucent gaze becomes a challenge that works its way inside the viewer’s mind.

The textured brushworks compete visually with the meaning of the shapes, gestures, an eyelid or an outline. Even inside the objects for which the figurative is miniaturized and deformed to cartoon status, the expressive force of symbolist drawing competes with the natural texture of wood or with the rigid fiber of the canvas. By looking at these Cézanne-like volumes we amazingly discover that the objectual sacrality refuses to die. No matter how much we try to get away from Byzantinism through expressionism, the feeling of sacrality lingers on in the viewer’s mind; there it settles in a preconceived way at the origins of understanding artistic meanings.

In this context, the art installations comprising traditional objects, projections and happenings become amalgamations between reality and spiritual and offer multiplying opportunities for understanding the postmodern man. Radu Șerban has achieved his style by using these instruments and technique by which he can walk the thin line of the symbolist expressionism without losing the sacred conversation of the reflexive chromatic fields – the artist cultivates in the abstract the energy of the transcending feeling that blends prayer with life.

Radu Șerban’s art offers evanescence to a synapse, a connection between the spiritual sensibility of tradition and the logic of contemporary artistic creation.

The static that characterizes the dinamics of his compositions, together with the dinamics of his artistry depicting stills, both offer direct ways of understanding the complexity of the process of creation and of the human spirit, by the means of the undisputable sacrality of art.

Radu ȘERBAN – artist visual Născut la Cluj în 1960. A absovit Universitatea de Artă din București, Secția Pictură, clasa prof. Marius Cilievici, promoția 1987. Din 1990, Radu Șerban este membru al U.A.P. România și cadru didactic la Universitatea de Artă și Design din Cluj-Napoca. În anul 2006 obține Diploma de Doctor în Arte Vizuale. În prezent este conf. univ. dr. la aceeași instituție.

Din 1991 până în prezent, artistul a organizat peste 20 de expoziții personale în țară și în străinătate.

Radu Șerban este reprezentat în Canada de T-Art Gallery din Toronto.

Radu ȘERBAN – visual artist Born in 1960 in Cluj, Romania. He graduated from the Bucharest Art University’s Painting Department in 1987.

Since 1990, Radu Serban is a member of Romanian Artist’s Union (U.A.P.) and has been teaching at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca where he is currently employed as associate professor. In 2006 he was granted a doctoral degree in Visual Arts.

From 1991 until present, the artist has organized more than 20 solo shows in Romania and abroad.

Radu Șerban is represented in Canada by T-Art Gallery of Toronto.
