The aim of the project was to design a building/space that is responsive to the Brussels climate and use the appropriate materials to suite the conditions of the site. The current space is seen as an unsafe and secluded area therefore we were required to deliver a design that is inspiring, unique, socially engaging as well as welcoming to enliven the site and is inclusive to everyone. The project will focus on creating a vibrant green space that integrates nature, recreation, and cultural elements while promoting environmental consciousness and social cohesion.

The main programme includes: •

Corner coffee café at the junction from the entrance of the park and the residential units. This node will serve the café functions efficiently with volumes of pedestrian traffic.

Food market stalls will be underneath a steal and timber structure where users can sit on, climb on and walk on. These structures will have overhanging plant gardens.

Another café/restaurant will be next to the food market and will have elevated walkways above it.

A bar area will sit next to the food market stall area and will have seating for users.

This was a group task in pairs which challenged our teamwork skills and fosters collaborative creativity, allowing diverse perspectives to converge, leading to innovative solutions that address multifaceted challenges in design and construction.

EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVES

The aim of the project was to design a building where the design requirements include a four-storey height, a concrete frame structure with a partial basement integrated into the site slope, and a double-skin facade featuring glazing with screening on the west side.

Additionally, the upper floor should incorporate a sheet roof to enhance the overall volumetric aspects of the building.

The accommodation requirements for the facility include: Basement: Parking for 40 vehicles, fire stair, lift access to all floors, mechanical plant, receiving/loading bay for produce, and bin storage.

Ground floor: Entrance lobby with access control, food processing hall , digital research centre and staff ablutions.

First floor: Cafeteria with a store room and prep kitchen shared laboratories with individual store rooms, and meeting rooms.

Second floor: Offices , research library and staff ablutions for 10 people.

Rooftop: Break-away space.

Integrating agriculture into urban areas offers benefits like reduced dependence on distant food sources, lower transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions, and a more resilient food supply chain. Recognizing the link between socio-ecological resilience, food security, and urban agriculture can lead to comprehensive solutions, addressing both environmental and social challenges for a sustainable urban future. The studio aims to enhance our ability to respond effectively to institutional building requirements.

The aim of the project was to design a proposed community centre in the north-eastern corner of the town which aims to leverage the natural boundary between the town and the nearby nature/recreation area for communal activities. The single-story centre's program includes an after-school facility for 50 children, a coffee shop with a prep kitchen, a mountain bike rental depot and repair shop, and five workshops for local entrepreneurs (woodwork, pottery, crafts). Emphasizing safety and outdoor space, the design draws inspiration from historical spatial typologies like the 'werf,' 'kraal,' and courtyard. The building is expected to integrate with the historical context, emphasizing social function, and displaying sensitivity in massing, materiality, and detailing.

Traditional Cape Vernacular architecture in Stellenbosch, South Africa, reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region. This architectural style, deeply rooted in Dutch and Cape Malay influences, is characterized by whitewashed walls, stoeps, verandas, and distinctive gables. The use of locallysourced materials and a focus on practicality in design make these buildings well-suited to the area's climate and lifestyle. This architectural tradition not only preserves the historical identity of Stellenbosch but also creates a unique and charming atmosphere that attracts visitors from around the world, offering a glimpse into the region's colonial past.
