Model Methodology

Hadar’s project highlighted the intentional gap between the planners’ professional knowledge and the local habitants knowledge when scheming urban space.

By analysing historical spatial typological maps of Mahane Israel neighbourhood Hadar identified architectural layers in time and space that mark acute conflicting interests between the new planning processes and the local habitants’ knowledge of their space of living.

The project claimed the gap as an intentional professional practice of avoidance of in-situ ground-knowledge when designing proposals for urban spaces.

This intense negation uncovered the impact of spatial planning on site identity and perceptions, both personal and communal, as well as on the possibilities for the actual use of site-space.

Hadar`s research stressed the limitations imposed by the embedded agenda on habitants’ right to a cityspace that is reflexive to its residents’ varied characteristics and preferences.

Invisible Alleys centred on experimenting and analysing the concepts of legibility (how easily people can experience the layout of a place)* and navigability using the labyrinthine typology Mahane Israel which confines passersby in the uncharted alleys as a case study.

Nitzan and Yoav added physical obstacles in-situ that extreme the question of coping daily with free and open personal movements within the complex closed spatial layout patterns. Using short-film as a methodological tool allowed documenting personal-subjective action-solving when confronted with these tangible obstacles. The noted, at times unique, individual solutions reflected the importance people assign to unobstructed movement in spatial and place typology, as an open flow of ‘right to walkability’ in public and semi-public spaces.
