Reusable glass bottled water As part of our Green Meeting Initiative we also supp branded pencils rather than pens. Standard pen recyclable as they contain metal parts, and so when end up in landfill. Our pencils are made from woo from sustainable plantations, and when dispos compostable. We have also recently purchased brand new banqu our event spaces, made from eco-friendly fabric Greenguard Gold Certified, and as such reduces pollution and chemical emissions.

The first hotel in Oceania to be Green Key certified
The Green Key award is the leading standard for showing excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainability within the hotel and tourism industry. There is a strict criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education, and this award shows the commitment of Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel Sydney to make a difference. As part of the Green Key programme we are always working towards reducing our carbon footprint, reducing our water and energy usage, sourcing sustainable materials, and continue to implement various ways we can lower our impact on the environment. We also strongly encourage and inform our staff to be environmentally friendly and open with new ideas for the hotel. Simply Energy – embracing the use of Solar Power Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel Sydney have signed an exclusive contract with Simply Energy, to purchase electricity from their solar farm from July 2020 to 2029. This initiative embraces the use of solar power, and wind farms for producing energy. There are many benefits of switching to an environmentally friendly way of generating power. Traditional electricity production uses thousands of litres of water per year, whereas generating power through solar panels uses none whatsoever. Traditional electricity production uses fossil fuels to generate energy, which causes harmful carbon dioxide and methane gases to be produced, which also lowers the quality of the air we breathe. Generating electricity from solar panels uses no greenhouse gases, produces no harmful emissions and has less toxic emissions compared to fossil fuels, which also helps to reduce the effect of climate change. We can offset up to 1 tonne of carbon dioxide for every megawatt hour of solar energy we use.

Water and energy saving initiatives
Radisson Blu chooses to cleanse our cooking oil naturally, which allows us to reduce the amount of oil we consume by almost half! This also creates a healthier product for our guests. The VITO oil filtering system works by dropping the VITO device into the cooking oil, which then filters the oil. Particles are easily stuck to the fryer, which can turn into carbon. Filtration stops the formation of unwanted products developed from carbon. By using this system, the food we serve is better quality, and increases up to 50% of oil life.
Vito filtration – reduces carbon and oil consumption
Throughout our hotel we are rolling out the installation of watersaving shower heads, reducing water wastage whilst maintaining the maximum level of comfort for our guests. We encourage our guests by rewarding bonus points to those who choose not to the service the room on multiple night stays, which reduces unnecessary consumption of cleaning products and saves water. Signs informing guests about our water waving initiatives are in every room, asking guests to choose to re-use towels, and to consider reducing their shower time. Left over soap bars are also saved from landfill, as we collect and donate to Soap Aid, who recycle them and create new bars of soap to be distributed to those in need. Soap Aid has saved over 151 tonnes of soap from landfill.

For cocktail events, our team of talented chef’s use bamboo eco packaging and utensils that are fully biodegradable and compostable. By using biodegradable packaging and utensils rather than plastic, we are saving 32% of the 78 million tons of plastic which ends up in our oceans. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable and renewable materials, it can grow as much as 2 foot per day, and can also be harvested in as little as 3 years, much faster than traditional hardwood. Additionally, bamboo wood absorbs 5 times more carbon dioxide, and creates 35% more oxygen!

Bio-degradable straws – No more plastic Instead of using plastic straws, our hotel has switched to EcoStraws, which decompose naturally and are free from chemicals that are harmful to the environment. The Eco-Straw is a highquality product, whilst being an eco friendly option, it also maintains quality for our guests, rather than a paper straw option. Once the Eco-Straw has been disposed of, after the first 48 hours of sunlight and exposure to oxygen, the straw will begin to degrade. Eco-Straws have an approximate lifespan of 18 months after use, instead of 30+ years, like a standard plastic straw. Eco food packaging & utensils!

Eco-friendly and sustainable kitchen Along with delivering the best 5-star service and product, our kitchen at Radisson Blu Sydney is sustainably and environmentally minded. All perishables used at the hotel are sourced from local suppliers, which helps reduce our ‘food miles’. By using local produce, less transportation is required so this reduces our carbon footprint, and environmental impact. This also supports local farmers and producers, creating more work for our regional community, and supports our Aussie farmers during hard times of drought and bushfire. At Radisson Blu we also support a local animal shelter by donating food wastage, and anything that cannot be donated, is composted using our Waste to Water scheme.
EcoBurner – environmentally friendly portable heating Food service in a buffet generally requires a portable heat source, and Radisson Blu uses EcoBurners for all our conference buffet service. EcoBurners replace traditional gel and wick pots, which after single use are disposed of in landfill. EcoBurner is refillable, so no used pots go to landfill, and the fuel creates 75% less carbon emissions as certified by Carbon Footprint Ltd. EcoBurner has saved 6655 tonnes of carbon globally. They have prevented 29.94 million chemical burners going into landfill!
