GIVE YOUTH A NE W START!

WINDJAMMER GUILD • Business members • Foundations • Personal sponsors

INVITATION to the Windjammer Guild With this presentation, I would invite you to join a social entrepreneurship venture with Christian Radich as a platform. In January 2018, the board of the Christian Radich Foundation set out a strategy aimed at renewing its mandate for youth who are at risk of losing direction on their way to active participation in professional life. We are now ready for a three-year establishment phase. In this phase we aim to help 1000 young people out of passivity. Researchers from FAFO will monitor the participants and us in order to verify the results. Our goal is to confirm Windjammer as a reliable tool for reducing exclusion and dropout from upper secondary education. I hope that your organization or you as a private person will enjoy and benefit from being involved. Specifically, the task is to put together a Windjammer Guild, which consists of companies and personal sponsors, who together contribute five million NOK annually for three years. This brochure is a brief presentation of needs and solutions, of who is involved and the role of the various participants.

Sincerely,

V I DA R P E D E R S TA D Director, Christian Radich Foundation

A frighteningly large proportion of young people in Norway do not complete upper secondary education. This has very serious consequences for the individuals involved, their families, and - if we can’t reverse this trend – for our entire community. The annual societal cost per youth is NOK 800,000.*1 Studies from several countries indicate that exclusion increases the chance of self-destructive acts, crime and health-damaging lifestyles.*2 Norway has a high dropout rate in upper secondary education. Figures from 2019 show that during a five-year period, 24.7% of those who start upper secondary education fail to complete.*3 This is almost twice the OECD average. A reduction in the dropout rate of 9 percentage points gives an estimated annual savings of NOK 44 billion for the public sector.*4

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN OUR LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL/ LOCAL COMMUNITIES Public bodies and companies can work together with regard to solutions that are tangible and local – Windjammer is one such solution. Participants will have a powerful experience that will free them from their deadlock situation. But they will return to the local community, often with new friends who live nearby. That is why we are happy to create regional groups. Windjammer’s objective is to give them the new strength necessary to make effective choices. The NAV follow-up service, the schools and companies together can supply the choices that these young people need. Through the scholarship packages, members of the Windjammer Guild can earmark their support for the region they belong to.

6

Thus, companies can also communicate their social involvement to the local community in a concrete way. Windjammer will contribute with inspirational stories for the media and motivational success stories for our supporters. There may also be youth in the families of a company’s employees for which Windjammer can be a good choice. In this way, members of the Guilde can offer employees a unique life management program for their youngsters. This will help to increase the local focus, loyalty and pride of employees. It is such employers that we want to collaborate with collectively.

WINDJAMMER GUILD

For the start-up period of three years, we need supporters who can secure funding until we have established a sustainable relationship with public financing bodies.

Possible Guild members:

Our goal is for the Windjammer Guilde to secure funding for at least 100 young people (NOK 5 million) per year for a three-year period. We have great ambitions on behalf of the Guild, but we underline that no contribution is too small or too large. We consider the following contribution plans: • 1–5 young people per year: NOK 50,000-250,000 • 6-10 young people per year: NOK 250,000 to 500,000 • More than 10 young people per year: Over NOK 500,000 * This investment will help save the community N OK 800,000 annually per participant who becomes socially active after the completed program. We offer Guild members the following: • Branding with name/logo in communication channels owned by Christian Radich • Status report of young people’s development after completed Windjammer program • Lectures and meetings with Windjammers in corporate events • Branding in a company’s own channels that shows they are a member of the Windjammer Guild and a Christian Radich supporter. • Attendance at Christian Radich’s annual fjord tour for supporters • Various discount schemes for companies and company employees for use of Christian Radich (based on the size of the support). * Source: DNV GL report (2017). “Samfunnsøkonomisk analyse av prosjektene i kronprinsparets fond.” [Socio-economic analysis of the projects in the Crown Prince Couple Fund].

WINDJAMMER SP ONSOR Contribute personally as a sponsor for youth w ho need a fresh start! We have received several inquiries from private individuals who wish to support one or more young people who are at risk of being left behind. We are now ready for a three-year establish ment phase. In this phase, the goal is to help 1000 young people out of passivity. This is a large number, but there are many young people who need help to restart and build a meaningful life. We therefore also invite private individuals to become a Windjammer Sponsor. A sponsorship costs NOK 50,000 and covers the cost of one youth to attend the Windjammer program. This includes 10 days of onshore workshops, approximately 4 weeks aboard Christian Radich with full board and lodging, as well as work clothes and travel expenses to and from the ship. As a Windjammer Sponsor you get: • Your name mentioned in communication channels owned by Christian Radich (voluntary) • The name of the person the support is awarded to and a report on how they have benefited from Windjammer • To attend Christian Radich’s annual fjord tour for supporters • 15% discount on all tours and experiences that Christian Radich offers

directly transferable to everyday life. For some, it’s about learning how to work in a team, or seeing the value of structure, for others it’s how to develop new networks through interaction with others. We sometimes take these things for granted, but they are building blocks I consider essential, and far too many young people still need to learn them. I hope and believe that our role as sponsors will give these youngsters a foothold in new and beneficial networks. I use sailing actively as a metaphor for value-based entrepreneurship: working with the conditions we have; working with the natural resources we have around us; and seeing the potential in the world. You don’t have to own the sea to sail on it. I strongly believe in creating positive learning experiences through a structured program and in this way giving vulnerable young people the strength they need to embark on life as young adults. To cite an old surfing phrase, “You can’t fight the wind, but you can learn to sail!” I have so much faith in Christian Radich as a platform and community player that I had the boat as the first ship in the EntrepreneurShip fleet. This is a growing ”pay-it-forward community” we are building to create a meeting place for young people, entrepreneurs, politicians and businesses who want to build better societal solutions. Windjammer is an indispensible program that will give today’s youth the opportunity to make a new start and thereby cultivate talents that will do something out of the ordinary for society. It is not a stigmatizing delinquent rehabilitation project. Christian Radich is a ship you are proud to be involved in, whether you are a so-called school dropout or a successful entrepreneur. I will feel a little safer about our common future if I know that thousands of young people have had this shared experience. Learning to master sailing, especially aboard a large ship on the high seas, provides learning experiences that are

We have already held a milestone tour on board with 120 of Northern Europe’s top entrepreneurs, who experienced the same thing as the Windjammers do – to get in touch with themselves and their fellow sailors, through sailing, watch duty, and a sense of community. Christian Radich is about to become a technology and start-up vessel for our community, and I can imagine nothing better than to fill it with the talents of the future.

WE ARE WINDJAMMER S “Before attending Windjammer, I was enrolled on an out-ofschool program that I struggled to attend. I had already been though rehab for a drug problem, but didn’t know what I wanted or how to get there. I signed up for Windjammer to make new friends who are not drug users and to learn some positive routines. After attending Windjammer, I have realized how much I can actually tolerate and manage, so now it is easier to get up and get going. The camaraderie and the satisfaction I got after finishing a task, and then being able to just sit down and look at the stars – that was the best thing about sailing with Windjammer, and it inspired me to decide that I would study for a job at sea. The feeling of I got from being able to do more and more every day was incredible. I felt like I was getting stronger and stronger each day and understood that it was up to me to get where I want to go in life. But the most important thing I learned from the Windjammer program is that I have to take care of myself too, not just care for everyone else. Windjammer was one of the best things that could have happened to me.”

“I was depressed and lay in bed for a year before I joined Windjammer. Throughout my teens and into my 20s, I had struggled with mental health issues, and I just couldn’t find my place in the world. Then along came Christian Radich and awakened my childhood pirate dream, and it com pletely changed my life! When the next pilot was going to sea in the swinter of 2019, I joined as a volunteer to help other young people get the same amazing experience. Windjammer and Christian Radich showed me that it really matters whether I get up or not, and now, one year later, I have an apprenticeship with the ship and will become a sailor. Now the pirate dream has been replaced with the dream that one day I will be Radich’s first female captain!”

“To start with drugs when you are 12 does something to you. Getting away from the drugs culture is not easy and the temptation is always there. Last year at this time, I mostly sat in my apartment and used drugs. It was my grandmother who saw a feature on Windjammer on Good Morning Norway [morning TV], and thought it could be something for me. I got a scholarship, and the door was open to me, but I didn’t really want to go. However, I got a good first impression of both participants and staff at the advance meetings, and was convinced to take part. It was really easy to get to know the other people. We had all struggled with our issues, and I discovered that I was pretty good at adapting. The meetings before the voyage taught me a lot about myself and others, and during the voyage I also rediscovered my interest and talent for cooking. In order to keep my motivation up for starting high school, I got to participate in vocational training o n board Christian Radich, and during the summer spent countless hours in the galley and served thousands of guests.

“Before Windjammer I had tried everything. I had applied for a whole bunch of apprenticeships without getting many responses, and no interviews. For some reason, I failed to show that I am hardworking and trustworthy. For me, that was the biggest reason to join Windjammer – I wanted to prove to myself and everyone else that I am trustworthy and not a dropout. It was hard, maybe harder than I expected. Living so closely with people who are completely different from yourself, and having to figure how best to work together and implement tasks is demanding. What is really crazy is that I was offered an apprenticeship the week after I got home, and I got the job! So for me Windjammer was really a turning point and something I’m really proud to have accomplished.”

ACTIVITY COMMUNITY ACTIVE CHOICE

Behind the development and implementation of the Windjammer concept is a multidisciplinary team with both educational know-how and considerable practical experience from working with youth. The concept’s core is a month-long voyage on the Christian Radich, which gives the participant unique experiences of mastery and an opportunity to make a fresh start. The vessel is a unique platform for training in socialization, and we see that the Windjammers increase their ability to cope with life by finding their roles on board in interaction with other participants, crew and instructors. In addition, they must be considerate to each other in demanding conditions while challenging themselves in entirely new areas. They also gain invaluable insights into various job opportunities on board by attending ”job teaser” courses. The program before and after the voyage, carried out under the auspices of the Fundatum Foundation, is done in smaller groups where participants through get to know their strengths together. They are enabled to reverse their own life situation through both individual processes and group work. Everything is based on strengths-based learning theory. Back at school or out of work Through cooperation with the county authorities’ follow-up service and NAV, Windjammer participants receive follow-up after the program has been completed. Vestfold County Council believes that Windjammer is an important initiative. ”We find that Windjammer helps young people ”wake up”, change their attitudes, and believe that they are good enough and can make a contribution. All these factors are vital for them to successfully complete their higher education.”

A Windjammer!

Who do I want to become?

Windjammer has been developed through a two-year project run by Christian Radich’s staff and with Fundatum as a competence partner. By the end of 2019, we will have implemented three pilot programs. These have given us valuable experience and highlighted the importance of working closely with public funding bodies. We have had the support of a dream team of partners who, together with the Christian Radich Foundation, have invested in concept development and piloting. Now we are ready to establish Windjammer as a social entrepreneurial program.

We need NOK 10 million to complete a full year of operation. We aim to cover this through agreements with the members of the Guild and through a grant from the state. Christian Radich and Fundatum will be responsible for capacity costs, which will enable us to keep operations in balance while building cooperation with the public bodies.

Windjammer’s groups have a composition that provides a positive dynamic for the s trengths- based pedagogy used.

Windjammer is an important social mission for Christian Radich and other sailboats, which in turn will contribute to the sustainable operation of the boats.

The scholarship packages should be divided between two target groups:

Any operating surplus in Windjammer should only be used for maintenance of Norwegian sailing vessels.

1) Vocational training measures for youth who are stuck at home and are isolated. 2) School attendance support measures for youth in danger of dropping out of upper secondary education. The financing model is based on a combination of grant funding and gradual accumulation of support from the County Councils and NAV. Windjammer in combination with Christian Radich has an annual capacity of 400 young people. The Windjammer brand is intentionally not associated with Christian Radich, to provide the opportunity to develop the offer and capacity when using multiple boats.
