RADIAL Art Contemporain has invited Frank Fischer to create a chromatic
transcription of the works of Tomi Ungerer.
When an artist pays a tribute to another artist he admires, it inevitably raises
questions such as « how to proceed? » Or « How to remain faithful to the artist and
his work? »
Frank Fischer approached the task by delving into his memories as a child, when he
was given Ungerer’s well-known books “The Moon Man” and “The Three Robbers”.
This personal reminiscence explains why the largest format created for this homage
refers to : “Moon Man follows its lonely protagonist as he visits Earth for the very
first time” which is the image most vividly engraved in his mind.
Following this, Frank Fischer remembered several emblematic works by Tomi
Ungerer, such as the famous billboards realised for the Montreux Jazz Festival.
These choices were the starting point of an in-depth research and documentation
effort which made him revisit the abundant work of Tomi Ungerer.
