La vision que Carlo Borer porte sur notre avenir commun se décline souvent en teintes sombres. On se souvient en effet de ce cœur géant qui peine à trouver son rythme et doit être aidé par une machine externe et de ces énormes poumons enchâssés dans des containeurs symbolisant la raréfaction et la dégradation de l’air ambiant.

Der Blick, den Carlo Borer auf unsere Zukunft richtet, zeigt sich in düsteren Tönen. Wir erinnern uns an dieses gigantische Herz, dem es nicht gelingt seinen Rhythmus zu finden, welches bepumpt wird von einer übergrossen Maschine. Oder die in Container eingebetteten riesigen Lungen, welche die Verknappung des Raumes und Verschlechterung der Umweltbedingungen symbolisieren. In der aktuellen Ausstellung teilt der Künstler mit uns ganz andere Ängste. Ausgehend von einer Grafik zur Weltbevölkerungsprognose, erstellt von den Vereinten Nationen, schafft Carlo Borer ein Objekt, das der Form eines Hurrikans erstaunlich ähnlich sieht.

Pour cette nouvelle exposition, les angoisses de l’artiste sont d’un autre ordre. Partant d’un graphique produit par les Nations-Unies sur les projections démographiques mondiales, Carlo Borer construit une oeuvre en forme d’ouragan façonné par le temps. L’installation est entièrement incluse dans un espace clos, la base représente l’humanité en l’an 0 et le sommet la population actuelle. Comme un tuyau sinueux la forme monte en spirale, d’abord lentement, puis, en arrivant près du plafond s’écarte en cercles concentriques qui très vite envahissent tout l’espace : ça y est, l’humanité a consommé toutes ses ressources, tout son espace, plus d’échappatoire, à moins d’aller coloniser une autre planète, pour y rejouer notre pièce fatale, comme des aliens.

La question climatique, avec ses modèles mathématiques, ses courbes, ses images satellites et son scénario catastrophe inéluctable alimente la réflexion de Carlo Borer qui « pense en images » et nous donne à voir ses représentations mentales. On y retrouve des météorites à l’aspect menaçant mêlées à d’élégants pulsars dont les formes évoquent une évolution naturelle des plus anciens clusters de Carlo Borer. La notion de système aussi l’interroge. Comme une mécanique implacable, les espèces, humaine en premier, tracent une route logique partant des éléments disponibles (air, eau, énergie, molécules chimiques…) pour un scénario joué d’avance, toujours le même.

Carlo Borer aime à imaginer que ce scenario est à l’œuvre aussi dans d’autres espaces, avec peut-être d’autres issues. Les œuvres de Carlo Borer sont si parfaites qu’elles semblent sorties d’une industrie robotisée. Pourtant tout est modelé par ses mains d’artisan et par un savoir-faire qui passe du dessin sur papier au logiciel 3-D, puis viennent la découpe et le modelage des formes d’acier et un polissage long et patient. On dirait des objets découverts sur une autre planète dont on se demande quel en est l’usage et qui les a créés, à moins qu’ils ne soient juste tombés du ciel. En fait, chaque œuvre de Carlo Borer est un morceau de temps, arraché à sa vie d’artiste, ce temps qui justement l’interroge.

Das ursprüngliche Werk ist in einen vollständig geschlossenen Raum gebaut. Die Basis repräsentiert die Menge der Menschen vor zweitausend Jahren. Wie eine gewundene Röhre schraubt sich die Form zuerst langsam nach oben, kurz vor der Decke, breitet sie sich in konzentrischen Kreisen aus, die sich im ganzen Raum breit machen: Das war‘s, die Menschheit hat all ihre Ressourcen, den ganzen Lebensraum gefüllt und verbraucht; es gibt keinen Ausweg mehr, es sei denn, wir kolonisieren wie Aliens einen anderen Planeten, um unser verhängnisvolles Programm erneut abzuspulen.

Die Klimafrage mit ihren mathematischen Modellen, Kurven, Satellitenbildern und unvermeidlichen Katastrophenszenarien liefert Carlo Borers Reflexion den Stoff. Der Künstler aber „denkt in Formen“ und gibt uns einen Einblick in seine inneren Vorstellungen. Dort stossen wir auf bedrohliche Meteoriten und elegante Pulsare, als weiter Entwicklung der älteren Clusters.

Das System der Evolution wird hinterfragt. Ausgehend von den verfügbaren Elementen (Luft, Wasser, Energie, chemische Moleküle...) zeichnen die Spezies, allen voran der Mensch, in einem unerbittlichen Kräftespiel, einen scheinbar logischen Weg. Ein vorherbestimmtes Szenario?... immer das gleiche? Carlo Borer stellt sich gerne vor, dass dieses Szenario auch in anderen Räumen möglich ist, vielleicht mit anderen Ausgängen.

Carlo Borers Werke sind so perfekt, dass sie aus einer vollautomatisierten Industrie zu stammen scheinen. Doch vieles ist Handarbeit und mit einem Know-how gestaltet, das von der Zeichnung auf Papier bis zur 3D-Software reicht. Erst am Computer entwickelt, folgen Schneiden und Modellieren von Stahl hin zu perfekten Formen und schliesslich ein langes und geduldiges Polieren. Die Objekte sehen aus als wären sie von einem anderen Planeten und man fragt sich, wozu sie verwendet werden und wer sie geschaffen hat, oder ob sie einfach vom Himmel gefallen sind. Eigentlich ist jedes Werk von Carlo Borer ein Stück Zeit, das dem Künstler aus dem Leben gerissen wurde. Genau diese Zeit, die bei ihm so viele Fragen aufwirft.

THE FUTURE’S ALREADY HERE, WE’RE ALL ALIENS...

Carlo Borer’s vision of our common future is coloured in dark shades.

We all remember the giant heart, struggling to beat and needing to be supported by an enormous external machine or the enormous lungs encased in containers, symbolising the depletion and degradation of the air around us and the limitation of space.

For this new exhibition, the artist’s anxieties are of a different order. Using a graph produced by the United Nations of world demographic projections as his foundation, Carlo Borer has constructed a three-dimensional object reminding a hurricane, shaped by time. The original installation is entirely enclosed in a capsule, the base representing the number of human people on earth at year 0 and the top the present human population. Like a winding pipe, the shape spirals upwards, slowly at first, then as it reaches the top, it spreads out in concentric circles that very quickly invade the whole space: that’s it, humanity has consumed all of its resources, all of its space, there’s no way out, unless we were to colonise another planet, take back to the stage for an encore of our fatal play, like aliens.

The issue of climate change, with its mathematical models, curves, satellite images and inevitable disaster scenario, feeds Carlo Borer’s reflections, who thinks in shapes and allows us a glimpse at the imagination flowing from his artist’s mind. We find here threatening looking meteorites mixed with elegant pulsars whose shapes evoke a natural evolution of Carlo Borer’s oldest clusters.

The notion of a system in itself raises many questions. Like the relentless looping of gears and cogs, different species, especially humans, piece together a logical plot from available elements (air, water, energy, chemical molecules), until they reach a predetermined finale, always the same one. Carlo Borer likes to think that this same scene is performed in other spaces, but perhaps with differing endings.

Carlo Borer’s works are so perfect that one could think that they had been machine-made. Yet everything is crafted by the artist’s own hands, brought to life thanks to a know-how that first takes drawings off the paper into 3D software, then comes the cutting and modelling of steel shapes and a long and patient polishing to finish. The pieces could be mistaken for objects discovered on another planet, with one wondering what they could be used for and who created them, or perhaps thinking that they just appeared from nowhere. In fact, every piece by Carlo Borer is a fragment of time, torn from his life as an artist, moments that he has highly valued.
