Welcome ..... Winter can be a magical time and children across the Island will be looking forward to all the Christmas festivities and hoping for snow. After a few snowy winters over the last few years it would be nice to have a little this year, well enough to make a snowman and a few snow balls, but not enough to stop the traffic. As it gets colder we may want to stay inside and keep warm, but children will still want to go out. To help with ideas take a look at Top Things To Do This Winter on page 20. As always The Family Directory team have been checking out local activities and events, you will find some great competitions in the magazine on page 22 & page 31 and also online. Join us on Facebook and Twitter - find us at The Family Directory and become a fan. We update with events and news regularly and don’t forget to mention ‘The Family Directory’ when making a call. Front Cover Star for our winter issue is Sophia. We had a lovely photo shoot over half-term at Robin Hill with Mandy from Mandy Meadows Photography. Robin Hill was the perfect place for our winter photo shoot as the colour of the trees were beautiful. We love all the photos you send in and we will now be looking for the Front Cover Star(s) for the spring issue. If you get chosen, you will be invited to join us for a photo-shoot for the spring front cover. If you would like your child or children to be the front cover star(s) for the spring magazine please send your photos to polly@thefamilydirectory.co.uk with all your details by the 19th of January. To see the shoot for this magazine go to the inside back cover or look on our website.

In the summer issue we had some family passes for the Ventnor Botanic Gardens and also tickets for Jay Miller Circus, see more reviews on page 38

Thank you very much for the family pass to Ventnor Botanic Gardens. We had a summer day to visit the gardens. For my family the best part was The ‘Tropical Garden’ our 9 month old loved the waterfall. At the gardens we enjoyed the play park and on Tuesdays and Thursdays there were kids activities & on Sundays there was live music and a BBQ which is great for all the family. After walking around the gardens we went to the cafe for the toffee & banana Cake. We would have gone down to Steep Hill Cove but couldn’t with the pram but worth doing if you can ! Ruth

Helping you find the right school If asked how to go about choosing the right school for your child what would you say? It is a good idea to do your research, call the school ask them when is the next open day. Don’t just look around one school, visit a few that you think will suit your child’s needs. Make a list of questions you need to ask. Many schools benefit from having small class numbers then giving more personalised attention. Ask if you can talk to other parents at the school if you are interested and for children travelling cross the Solent ask about mini buses and travel plans the school have put in place. To help with the cost many schools offer some form of financial assistance in the form of scholarships and bursaries. As a parent, you are in the fortunate position of having a good range of independent school choices available to you on and off the island. A good website that offers free and impartial advice on all aspects of independent education across the uk is www.isc.co.uk

As thoughts turn toward Christmas, Priory School are able to reflect upon a truly momentous year. The School have successfully completed the new multipurpose Key Stage 1 Unit, allowing young pupils access to a wonderful outside area and to a woodland - echoing the school’s emphasis on learning through outdoor play and experience. Young pupils can also enjoy regular trips to St. Mildred’s Chapel, participating in a number of seasonal celebrations, affirming the school’s Christian identity. The implementation of the Victoria Bursaries, with a 50 per cent reduction in fees, giving children in Reception Class to Year 2 the opportunity to experience a first class education at an affordable cost, has successfully opened doors to parents within the community and has been enthusiastically received. The Sixth Form Suite has also been completely refurbished; the suite comprises of a private study area, tutorial room and a common room, allowing the students to meet and socialise over a cup of tea or coffee. Priory School is delighted that many of it’s A Level students have already been accepted by universities such as London, Warwick, Portsmouth and Reading. A Level taster days, offering prospective students the chance to experience a series of rotated 45-minute tutorials, can be arranged upon request. Offering excellent GCSE and A Level results, outstanding pastoral care and a maximum class size of 16, Priory School educate and care for children at the beginning of their education continuing all the way through until sixth form. It is truly a “family” school. For further information and to arrange a visit to the school, please contact Sarah Gully - 01983 861 222 or visit: www.prioryschool.org.uk See advert page 14

Ryde School Situated in beautiful grounds overlooking the Solent, Ryde School offers the perfect environment to foster adventure and exploration in our educational learning. From Nursery to 18 years of age, we believe in mixing traditional and innovative approaches to learning at Ryde School and this starts from your child’s very first steps at Fiveways and the Junior School, arousing the curiosity and ambition in our pupils that continues throughout their education. Combining academic excellence with our wider, holistic approach to broadening education ensures our pupils grow up to be confident, accomplished, engaging and polite individuals. Committed to moving our curriculum forward we now offer Latin and Mandarin in the Junior School and the new junior level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, the ASC (Adventure Service Challenge). Utilising our grounds and surrounding countryside, pupils are encouraged to explore, build and learn together. After school pupils can cook, make pots, grow plants or ponder science conundrums in our many clubs or are simply given the time to explore the amazing array of inspiring books our libraries have to offer, ensuring motivated, enthusiastic learners, ready to fulfil their individual potential.

Take a walk around Mayville High School and the positivity is bursting out of every classroom. It is a typical school day, and while Year 2 pupils head to the beach for a lesson, thanks to our recent Beach School status, a group of Year 9 girls make the 10 minute journey by minibus to our multi-use games area on 20 acres of playing fields at Cockleshell Gardens in Southsea to play netball. Back at school pupils benefit from small classes, where boys and girls are taught separately in the core subjects to best meet their learning needs. Amble past the Linda Owens Hall and children of all ages armed with pots and pans, dustbins and brooms are taking part in “Stomp” a music workshop. In an adjacent hall our Pre-School pupils are engaged in a P.E lesson with a specialist teacher. A group of Mayville pupils have recently returned from a month long trip to Cambodia, and plans are already afoot for the Junior and Senior ski trip. The opportunities at Mayville are simply endless. It is a school where we believe every child feels valued. In a recent questionnaire Juniors and Seniors put forward their views on their school. Juniors say, “We are like a family”, “It makes me feel like an individual.” Seniors add, “I never feel out of place”, “It’s unique with small classes and the teachers know you.” Academically strong Mayville also offers a Gifted and Talented Programme. As Mayville’s new Headteacher Rebecca Parkyn says, “Mayville provides an education that will withstand the test of a lifetime.” We are proud of what we achieve at Mayville. With our fleet of minibuses picking up pupils from the Hovercraft and dropping off each day it is a very easy journey. If you would like to come and see what’s on offer we would love to show you around call 023 92734847 See advert page 14 for more information.

Come and see for yourselves at our next Open Morning on Saturday 7th February between 10am and 12pm. The Headmaster, Mr Waldron and the Heads of both the Junior School and Fiveways will be available throughout the morning for question and answer sessions and activities will be being run across the whole school. For further details please contact Rebecca Buckett, Admissions Secretary on 01983 617970. or see advert page 14 for more information.

Join the starry professional cast including ITV`s Britain`s Got Talent finalist - the incredible Phil Blackmore as Buttons, Cinderella’s best friend. From the world of the comedy stage comes Tommy Cooper `Jus` Like That` star, Phil Hoyles, and David Pibworth, from the stage version of Vicar of Dibley, as the hilarious Ugly Sisters. Sensational vocalist Laura Kaye Thomson is the magical Fairy Godmother with Katie Oughtibridge as the beautiful Cinderella. With international vocalist Charlie Royce from Disney Tokyo and featuring the young stars from PJ`s Theatre School and the Ella Sheppard School of Dance, means the Medina Theatre is this year’s unmissable pantomime.

Performances daily from December 22nd to the 3rd January Cinderella`s coach arrives at The Medina Theatre from December 22nd for what promises to be the best ever Christmas treat for the whole family. With dazzling scenery, beautiful ball gowns, hilarious antics, unbelievable stunts and fabulous live music it’s sure to be a sell-out!

We’re delighted to announce that the Official Isle of Wight Christmas Toy Appeal is back for its third year, aiming to exceed 2013’s incredible gifts total and bring Christmas cheer to the Island’s less fortunate children. Powered by Bestival and supported by Isle of Wight Radio and The County Press, the appeal was set up by local couple Deborah & Daniel Rooke in 2012, and has been a huge success thanks to your generosity. We’d like to ensure that disadvantaged Island children feel special this coming Christmas day, so we’re asking for your help by donating a brand new toy, suitable for children up to the age of 16 at any of the Island’s official drop off points, between the 14th November and 12th December. We know that everybody’s finances are stretched at this time of year, but we do suggest a minimum value of £10 per gift donation. Our team of Toy Appeal volunteers will then wrap each donation and spread some Christmas joy on your behalf, delivering them to those children most in need in time for Christmas. Last year, Toy Appeal organisers set a target of 2500 donations and your incredible generosity helped us smash that target with a phenomenal total of 3,453 toys and gifts donated. Some money was donated to the appeal too, which was either converted into toys that were distributed to the needy last Christmas, or has been used to buy much needed play equipment for St. Mary’s Hospital, Barnardos and YMCA Young Carers. For more information on how you can help, see our advert on the inside front cover.

So don’t delay, book today to ensure the best seats for the Island`s best loved Panto! Book Online at www.MedianaTheatre.co.uk Box Office: 01983 823884

Try it, Test it, Review it... ‘Try it, Test it and Review it’... In the summer issue we were looking for 3 parents to try out Easy2name “Off to School” sets that contained 30 waterproof stickers, 30 iron on nametapes, 1 set of shoe covers, 1 bag tag and 1 shoe bag – all personalised with your choice of name. Before I have only ever used sew on embroidered name labels, but I was really impressed with the iron on labels. Just hold the iron over for 10 seconds let it cool then repeat two more times, TA DA all secured, and have stayed on after many washes. It’s so easy especially if you have a few items to name, no more sewing for me!!! I put the stick on labels on a selection of lunch boxes and drinks bottles and they have withstood going in the dishwasher on a regular basis. The embroidered drawstring bag is of good quality and takes quite a battering when my son rams his swimming kit in it! I will be restocking from Easy2Name when supplies run out. Kerry Haywood Mother of Logan

The Easy2Name labels are very robust and have stayed in place without peeling or fading despite numerous washes in the dishwasher. Perfect for preschool cups and bottles! The Easytapes are easy to apply and have also remained intact despite numerous washes. No more hunting for clothes and shoes at preschool!! We have yet to use the bag but this will be perfect for trips to the swimming pool etc, and Millie loves the colour! I will definitely be ordering more for our youngest daughter! Mother Alex Gray

We have 2 Lampe Berger Lamps to give away and they will make your home smell lovely for Christmas Bayliss & Booth in Newport have two Lampe Berger Lamps to give away to be tried and tested. Lampe Berger brings fabulous fragrance to your home. This unique system was invented by a French pharmacist Maurice Berger, in the late 1800’s, to improve air quality in large institution buildings in France. The clever burner that is at the heart of these Lampes, originally and still today made in Limoges of porcelain, is patented and works by removing bacteria and odours from the air. Which is great with all our day to day lives. At Bayliss & Booth you can choose the original unfragranced version but you are also spoilt for choice with a comprehensive range of simply gorgeous fragrances all expertly created in the same way as fine fragrances, and with over 40 different design of lamps to choose from too. Visit Bayliss & Booth, exclusive stockists on the Isle of Wight to discover this amazing Lamp. The Lampe Berger Lamp would make a great Christmas present in any home on the island. To enter: Email your name, address and telephone number to polly@thefamilydirectory.co.uk and the first 2 parents who email will be given an lamp to test and review.

Can you make a difference to a child’s life?

The Isle of Wight has a brilliant environment for children to grow up and flourish in.

Unfortunately, every year children are taken into care because their parents, for one reason or another, are unable to look after them. It may be that their parents are going through a difficult period, or that the child is subject to abuse or neglect. The problem is often unrelated to the child, and whatever it may be, the child needs looking after while the issues are resolved. The children can be hurt, frightened and sometimes angry, and deserve the support, shelter and comfort of a real home. Fostering is caring for such children in your own home. It is not adoption, but it can mean looking after a child for a week, a month, a year or sometimes even longer, helping them to thrive in a caring and safe environment. By providing a secure and loving home, you will help a child develop their self-esteem and learn that they are valued. While fostering can be very rewarding you will at times face difficulties. We offer a strong support team and do everything possible to help our carers. You will be working with a professional, experienced team of people, providing you with quality support, training and guidance. As an Isle of Wight foster carer, you will be provided with the opportunity to promote change and direction in a child’s life. To find out more and see how you can make a difference look out for our local drop-in events during the winter and spring months, call 01983

Eric the Elephant

Competition Reviews Jay Millers Reviews We were so thrilled to win tickets to the Jay Miller circus this year. Michelle, Christopher and Jay Koppany and Di Palmer had a most entertaining evening at the end of August.

Over a number of years staff from the Isle of Wight Council Trading Standards Service visited Island Schools taking with them a soft toy who was known as Eric the elephant. Eric was used to demonstrate to children how looking at labels can help to keep them safe. Eric helped children recognise every day situations that could prove a danger to them and to look at labels for warnings and help. The Isle of Wight Trading Standards Service and the Family Directory have linked together with the help of Eric the elephant to give you some tips on staying safe. As it will soon be Christmas Eric would like to give you some safety tips on the labelling of dvd’s and games to help keep our children safe.

DVD’s U, PG, 12, 12A, 15 and 18 Had a great time last night using the ticket I won in your prize draw. Miss Jodie was amazing though Pepe stole the show with his wit and comedy. Cerys Horner and Amelie Berry.

William thought the circus was amazing and can’t wait until next year!

U stands for universal and should be suitable for all ages, the film or dvd should make it clear to the child the difference between right and wrong. PG stands for Parental Guidance and can be viewed by all ages but could have content that could be disturbing to some children and so it is advised that an adult watch with the child. 12A Cinema release only. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. 12 only children of 12 or older can buy or rent a 12 rated dvd. These films have more complicated story lines and may have themes that could upset some children. 15 for children 15 and over may contain images that may glamorize violence, bad language etc and could be dangerous if copied. 18 for adults only.

The Extraordinary Travelling Film Show Reviews Just to say thanks for a great night out at Isle of Wight zoo tonight. We were delighted to see some of the animals before the film which really got us in the mood. Armed with hot chocolate and popcorn from the stalls we settled back on our picnic rugs to enjoy the movie. It was pretty chilly by the end so my top tip would be to take plenty of extra blankets to snuggle up in. Although we have watched Madagascar lots of times before we all love the film. Here are a couple of selfies from our night. Smile and wave boys, smile and wave! We arrived at Isle of Wight Zoo in plenty of time to see the film Frozen. It was a huge surprise for our 2 children, Chloë and Jack. We think they got a huge clue when people, mainly adults, we’re turning up dressed up as Anna, Elsa and of course Olaf. We were ushered past the leopards and lemurs etc. to the seating area, where there was a huge screen, the French style van supplied, tea, coffee and the hot chocolate was very welcome as the evening went on, as it did get quite chilly. There was also popcorn, candy floss and wands etc for the children to buy. As dusk fell, the film started. ‘Do you want to build a snowman’ and ‘Let it go’ rang out around the grounds, twice the Lions joined in with the singing as well, which made us all laugh. At the end of the film, everyone clapped and we all had a wonderful time. Thank you so much. Hazel Hyslop

Games

The PEGI rating system rates video games for age appropriate content all across Europe. Each game has a base Age Category rating, as well as up to six Content Descriptors. The age ratings are the same as for dvd’s however the content descriptors are very useful when choosing a game for a child. It is thought that some children who use games or watch dvd’s that are not age appropriate often copy the things they see in the games. This is often noticed within the classroom by teachers and causes great concern. It could also be the cause of behavioural problems within the home. You will find a website for children and parents called CBBFC www.cbbfc.co.uk It includes a child friendly version of the Classification Guidelines, activities like Rate-A-Trailer and guides for parents.

Island People

Izabela, Mike & Zara Why do you like living in Brading

It is so peaceful and quiet, there are a variety of walks available to us (we especially like the one around Roman Villa with the views stretching across the sea). It is a lovely environment for our little girl to be growing up in.

Favourite Local Park

Hands down Appley Beach - there is a lovely park for kids to play there as well as an amazing treat for the adults to enjoy the views and perhaps grab a cup of coffee from one of the two bars there. Beach is a plus too and such a great place for little ones to pick shells and enjoy splashing in the water when the tide is out.

Favourite Local Club / Class

We go to “Water Babies” in Cowes. So important for kids on the island to know how to swim from the early age - those classes are very professional and most of all effective.

Favourite Child – Friendly Restaurant

The nicest kid friendly place we have found on the island is Pizza Express in Newport. Food is always good and prepared using quality and mainly healthy ingredients. Other than that it would be Besty and Spinkys Cafe in Ventnor, lovely breakfast options and unbeatable views!

Favourite Place on the Island

Every corner of the island has its charms, you can pick a place based on your mood, weather or distance you want to drive/walk. Our absolute favourite however would have to be that little stretch between Sandown and Shanklin .

Best Children’s Book

We are huge fans of Hans Christian Andersen - Ugly Duckling is one of our top stories from him.

Favourite Beach

Yaverland - amazing views and superb long walks.

Natasha, Barnaby, Arlo and Freya Why do you like living in Newchurch?

Beautiful countryside, great school, lovely pub, close to work and conveniently located for all East Wight towns.

Favourite Local Park

The kids love Puckpool and Sandown.

Favourite Local Club / Class

All the kids activities on offer in the holidays at West Wight Leisure Centre are amazing.

Favourite Child – Friendly Restaurant

The Garlic Farm of course! Apart from it being the family business, the food is always fantastic and the kids really love seeing the animals and being free to romp around on the grass behind the restaurant.

Favourite Place on the Island

We have so many favourites! We really love Seaview, Bembridge, Steephill Cove, Compton Bay and Yaverland Beach on a quiet evening out of season.

Best Children’s Book

More Pants - it’s hilarious, we all laugh a lot at this book.

Favourite Beach.

Priory Bay Beach - we often sail our little boat round to this beach from Seaview. It’s our favourite beach in the world!
