Housebuilding Starts in Timber Frame Increase

Following the highly successful launch at Timber Expo, we are proud to present our Annual Survey and delighted to report that market share for timber frame housing construction has increased to 28.4% in 2016 and is expected to continue on an upward trajectory.

This is impressive enough but if we add to this the other construction sectors that are currently using timber systems such as Structural Insulated Panel Systems, Cross Laminated Timber and Glulam - it is obvious the whole sector is ‘on a roll’! We are currently compiling a report across these structural timber sectors which will be published at the end of the year and will provide robust detail to substantiate anecdotal evidence.

Both the NHBC and LABC are reporting unprecedented levels of housing starts in structural timber frame and this looks likely to increase further. Scottish Government is working with SFHA, Homes for Scotland, Scottish Innovation Centre and the STA in an effort to build 50,000 affordable homes in the lifetime of the current Parliament.

In addition, the STA has been working with the UK Governments All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Wood and the Welsh Government in promoting the benefits of timber frame for house building and the sectors ability to deliver any additional volumes required.

Launch of the New £3 Million Innovation Factory In September, representatives from the STA Board headed off to attend the launch of the new £3 million Innovation Factory, located at Hamilton International Technology Park in Lanarkshire. The facility will provide a dynamic environment, away from the conventional building site, where the UK construction industry can innovate, take risks, explore and learn in a safe and supported environment.

As structural timber systems are gaining traction across the industry, the STA’s mission is to enhance quality and drive product innovation through technical guidance and research, underpinned by our members’ quality standard assessment STA Assure. This scheme offers reassurances to the construction community that our members meet or even exceed current legislation and regulatory requirements.

Time for Timber Podcast The newly launched Structural Timber Association’s Podcast - Time for Timber can be listened to ‘on the go’ from mobiles or other portable devices. A series of interviews are planned with high-profile construction professionals and the first Podcast features Tim Snelson, Associate Director for Arup - a company that offers multi-disciplinary design, with architecture and engineering services.

In this inaugural Podcast, Tim Snelson discusses the opportunities for timber to provide smart solutions to rapidly create sustainable and energy efficient buildings to meet the current and future challenges in the construction industry.

Structural Timber – Providing the Capacity and the Solutions There has never been more enthusiasm for offsite manufacture and it is reminding government that the structural timber sector is ready and waiting to help resolve the shortfall in the housing stock. The well-documented housing shortage in the UK has become a political hot potato of late.

Politicians of all affiliations have been promising to address the issue, whether by pledging support for lending schemes or for the construction of hundreds of thousands of new homes.

This is all excellent news for the timber construction sector and it is being acted upon by the Structural Timber Association, which has lobbied successive governments long and hard over the advantages of building with timber. Thanks to the advances made by the sector, the STA now has hard evidence to back up its words and has prepared a capacity report.

Celebrating the Simply Outstanding The 2017 Structural Timber Awards – sponsored by the STA - surpassed all previous events in terms of the calibre of entries and attendance.

Construction professionals gathered at this prestigious award ceremony on October 10, at the National Conference Centre, Birmingham to celebrate the great, the good and the simply outstanding.

With over 200 impressive submissions, this year’s Structural Timber Award judges had an onerous job of selecting the winners. The big winner on the night was STA member, B & K Structures and Waugh Thistleton Architects for Dalston Lane which scooped the Winner of Winners. One of the judges described the project as “Inspirational in demonstrating what is possible using the correct balance of time, cost and performance.”

PROJECT GALLERY

Our Project Gallery demonstrates the diverse applications and capabilities of structural timber across a range of sectors. By exploiting advanced offsite manufacturing technology to increase capacity - structural timber systems deliver cost and programme assurances, developing energy efficient buildings at a rapid rate reducing capital and on-going running costs.

In this issue, to demonstrate the adaptability of Structural Insulated Panel Systems (SIPS), we focus on two very different projects.

Project: All Souls Church Company: SIPCO Ltd Sector: Leisure Technology: SIPS

All Souls Church was once the hub of the community in Bolton. It was built in 1881 by an evangelical mill owner and after the congregation dwindled, in 1986 the neglected and vandalised church was closed until two decades later, when the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) teamed up with the local community to restore it to its pivotal role at the heart of Bolton.

Following a £4.9m adaptive reuse project, which has been ten years in the making - the regeneration development recently won an English Heritage Angel Award for The Best Rescue of Any Other Type of Historic Building or Site.

The new look modern interior of the Grade II* listed church, features two futuristic free-standing ‘buildings within a building’.

Constructed from Structural Insulated Panels Systems – designed and manufactured by SIPCO - these ‘pods’ house a coffee shop, restaurant, meeting and event spaces together with a centre for heritage learning.

Constructed over a period of just over a year, all materials and machinery were brought in and out through the church’s two-metre wide west doorway. This restriction resulted in the use of a prefabricated SIPS, limiting the need for heavy lifting equipment during construction.

All Souls, the Churches Conservation Trust’s biggest ever regeneration project - was delivered on time and on budget, exceeding expectations. But this development is about so much more. It is about rejuvenation - bringing life back into a dilapidated and redundant building, giving the people of Bolton a ‘heart to their community’ – a place to use and enjoy but most of all, a building to be proud of. A joint partnership between the Churches Conservation Trust and the local community, has set up ‘All Souls Bolton’, an independent social enterprise, to manage the building.

Structural Timber - Delivering Better Buildings

Project: Pitairlie Roundhouse Company: JML Contracts Sector: Residential Technology: SIPS

JML were approached to custom build a roundhouse and bothy. The design of the new dwelling reflects the clients’ appreciation of the buildings in the Scottish countryside. The nature of the exposed site and the unpredictable Scottish climate meant the building method had to achieve a weatherproof Earth Save Productsand efficiently. shell quickly

JML engineered, designed, produced and erected the full SIP structure from its processing factory in Perthshire. The specialist installation team erected the house and installed triple glazed timber Aluclad windows and doors throughout. Their finishing joiners used local milled Scottish Larch to form the curved fascias and soffits for the roundhouse.

With such a complex design - accuracy and attention to detail are essential to ensure every joint was airtight and sealed. Having engineered and built many complex SIP structures in the past five years, this particular project allowed JML to demonstrate just what can be achieved Potton both structurally and aesthetically.

Although cleverly disguised as a traditional farm building, the cutting-edge engineering is fully appreciated in the cathedralesque roundhouse with amazing panoramic views. It is finished with timber boards in a smooth, uninterrupted curve. It produces a truly unique and architecturally stunning room within a budget that could not otherwise have been possible without using SIPS. The project was delivered exactly how the client and architect envisaged and demonstrates that SIPS engineering at its most complex and creative. This project is a seamless blend of inspirational design and cutting-edge construction techniques, built with commitment and dedication to the client’s dreams.

Driving Quality & Performance Standards

FIRE SAFETY WORKSHOPS

The STA Assure Membership and Quality Standards Scheme is designed to benefit both clients and members by promoting the differing accreditations and quality standards held by individual STA member companies. STA Assure has now received formal recognition from three of the industry’s leading structural warranty and building control bodies LABC Warranty, Premier Guarantee and more recently, Protek Warranty.

The STA is currently running a series of Fire Safety Workshops across the UK. The purpose of these workshops is to provide the latest Site Safe procedures and complementary Fire Risk Management and Safety information – including 16 Steps to Fire Safety and the Association’s latest Advice Notes. The workshops are open to STA members and non-members including system manufacturers, house builders, contractors, clients, designers, erectors, architects, HSE & CFOA members.

This year has seen the release of the updated Site Safe Policy which provides all members with access to the very latest Health and Safety training. Building on the existing expert guidance provided by the STA, the new iteration further pushes members to have best practice embedded as standard practice.
