The Hollow

Written by Arielle Millet

The Hollow ... let this sit on the tongue for a moment. Most would start off with the daily events and sell you on the activities .. what happened to a “quality atmosphere” good people, good times, and a venue that sells itself before you even step inside. Mike Chase and Cataplexia Numbers have done just this. I look around at the flowers and trees and expect to see a nymph or fairy. This is a very “mystical” setting, in which we find a very unique club experience that grants us both LIVE performers as well as Djs! Cataplexia wanted a place that has a fantasy/nature feel to it, not your ordinary day to day club.

She built a club just over a year ago with a similar feel -- and its been her dream to create such a place. Lets throw in the twist of romance. The first club she built, was the place where she met Mike Chase. Together they built this Metaverse into what we see today. “ Mike Chase: The Rift is our home. But we’ve tried to make it a place others can enjoy and feel at home in as well. Cataplexia and I are the co-owners though. And to her credit Cat is the builder and creative force behind this, I fill in with scripting, animations and some building. But the Hollow and it’s vibes is her creation.” “ Cataplexia Numbers: I have quite a good sense of imagination I would say. That’s what SL is all about inventing the

impossible, for me at least” “ As to future goals.. Personally I’d like to continue to be able continue to collaborate with Cataplexia on projects. And to promote the club and her music. I have a personal interest in exploring some of the new technology being introduced into SL like shared media in viewer 2. But I think you’ll continue to see a focus on art and fantasy in a lot of what we do here” “ Cataplexia Numbers: My goals are many. I first opened Alternate Metaverse 3 years ago this May. I can’t even count all of the furniture I have made, or the art. I am driven constantly to create, for me that is the greatest part of my life. I view SL more as an outlet of creativity than an escape from reality, its a new reality. “ Immerse yourself in a colorful world beneath SLs very own 160 Meter Oak tree! Beneath this very tree -- many TALENTED performers are found. The Hollow sponsors an Open Mic Night. Singers, Musicians, Comedians, Poets & Storytellers...Come to-

gether to show us the magic that resonates in this enchanted venue. Alternate Metaverse Furniture. Art & Visual Poetry, Photography and even Weddings! Cataplexia has a long history of art in her RL and she brings that artistic component into SL as well as her Art gallery. “ Mike Chase: If you haven’t seen the gallery.. Personally I’m especially

proud of Cat’s artwork and I’d love to see it promoted. I think as I said a lot of what’s here is an expression of her artistic sense” All of this tucked away with the lily pads and mushrooms. Come experience it for yourself. But from this writers opinion I give this lovely hide away 4.5 starts out of 5!

ASK Got a Question? Email us at RADAR_MAGAZINE@YAHOO. COM OR SEND A QUESTION ANONYMOUSLY http://www.formspring.me/ RadarMag

Question: Hello, was just wondering if you take employment in second life seriously? Or if something came through in real life would you just blow it off? Answer: Real life ALWAYS comes first, things do and will happen -however! Many in SL take their employment seriously! They will not tolerate a blow off -and you will find yourself looking for a new job. We have deadlines here at the magazine, if those deadlines are not met by our writers -- we re-

move them and look for someone who will commit. I guess its all a matter of personal ethics and how involved you wish to be in this virtual setting. I PERSONALLY would find a replacement if applicable, talk to management. I would not just blow my responsibilities off. Question: I hear so many people say that RL and SL relationships are two different things, on the other side of that people argue that they can run into each other -- your thoughts? Answer: There is a fine line of ethics with this question as well. It all depends on how you go into the relationship from the very beginning. For example: lets say both of you are married, have families etc

-- but are lacking something in your marriage. Neither one wants to throw the towel in, but to supplement their experience so to speak. Keeping your relationship inside SL -- means no outside contact, being phone, text, messenger programs, e-mail. Its SL content only. There are real people behind these pixels. When you spend time getting to know someone without the outside “world influence -- its easy to develop attachments, to find yourself thinking about such person in the real world. Sit down with your partner and set your expectations up front, be clear and truthful and you will save both of you a lot of heart ache in the end.

The Box of Secrets When Worlds Collide By Kylie SAbra

I look at the scar on the tip of my finger—a biting wound from the nemesis that hides in my desk drawer. I pull the box of secrets out and open the lid, the broken mirror lay waiting at the bottom, the source of my wound and she makes it clear she’s not finished with me. I sigh and pick up the mirror and look at my image within it. The frightened face that peers back at me is my own. *** He poofed from my arms without notice. He was constantly crashing, but this time was different. I gasped as the realization of what was happening in the home where that other keyboard sat

washed over me like icy spray from the waterfall he’d built for me. I quickly dressed and paced under the cedar trees I’d placed on our newly purchased sim to give us privacy. I knew he’d be back. I began to shake uncontrollably and more violently with each passing minute. Finally he logged back in and appeared about 20 meters away from me. I asked, “Are you okay.” He responded with an emphatic, “No.” Then utter silence. I backed as far away from him as I could, watching him pace wordlessly, every nerve firing. Dragging their feet, the minutes paced alongside him. Then that infamous four-letter word marched repeatedly across the page in brisk repetition. “Oh god no.” My breath stopped as the consequences just began to settle in and I said, “Goodbye.” He faltered. “I love everything here. What do I say? She has always been freaked out about SL.” Tell her that losing your job made you feel lost. That you escaped to a fantasy world to cope. Tell her…” I paused; choking back tears he would never see or hear. “…that it’s over. Tell her that we never had any intention of taking it out of

here. Tell her that I love my husband and that you love her.” I pause again, my fingers shaking. “Tell her the truth--that some good things came out of this.” Pregnant pauses punctuated his words. “You know I didn’t come to SL looking for anything I don’t already have. She thinks I did...” He halted as the horrifying feeling came over him again. Turning and seeing her staring over his shoulder while he made love to some strange woman on a computer screen. “…then that. Oh crap.” The pain in those two words cut across cyber air, making his ache mine. “None of us ends up in this situation unless we’re missing something. Try to figure out what’s missing in your relationship, and how you want more than anything to have that with her. This experience may have taught you more than you know if you just think it through.” I pause giving him time. “I wish I could hug you. I know you’re hurting and scared. It’s okay. Breathe.” No answer. “Are you still alone?” “No.” *** I spent more than ten hours crying. I didn’t think it was possible to cry like that. I didn’t sleep or eat for more than two days. Somehow we survived, but things had changed so subtly it took us time to see

it. We continued to work together, built a home together, but something was missing. A few weeks later I became seriously ill and nearly died. My RL husband contacted him by email to let him know what had happened to me. HD was terrified by it and inundated with changes in his own personal life he pulled away. The emails and IMs growing less frequent as I lay in the hospital. As HD withdrew, someone else pulled me close to his side, talking with me as often as he possibly could. He sent me stories, jokes, constantly, making sure I knew I was loved. He’d told me some time ago that he loved me, but passed it off as friend love. After all, I was still with HD. Now I knew his love was far deeper than that of a friend. We’d been friends for months. I’d met him right after I came to SL. I always loved him, always wanted him, but he seemed so unavailable to me. Nonetheless, if I was in pain he was there to comfort me. I realize now that he’d loved me all this time. My permanent dance partner, through every twist and turn of my life he accompanied me. I was away from SL during my hospitalization. HD and I came together and talked as soon as I came back in-world.

“Everything in my life turned upside down,” he said. “My entire family was sick. I’d started my new job. I suddenly went from having all the time in the world to having none. And then you…I knew what you were facing was dangerous. A few moments here with you and I feel calm again. I told myself I was giving you space to recover, but I realize now that what we both needed was to talk to each other.” He looked at me intently. “RL stomped all over our SL fantasy, didn’t it?” “Yes, love. It did.” *** Whether it be fate or destiny, my beautiful lover has become my dear friend and a dear friend has become my precious love. And I thank the fates that they are both still in my life, because I love them both dearly. I look at the mirror one last time. Gone is the fear, replaced by a face serenely smoothed by an overwhelming sense of peace. I toss the broken mirror into the garbage can and smile at she who inhabits the Box of Secrets. “You’ll not hold this mirror up to my face again.” In her stunned silence, I replace the lid and hide the box in the dark corner of my bottom drawer. Harlee Lane – Rebellious Spirit If you truly love SL fashion then you know who Harlee Lane is. Every Monday at 7:30 p.m., the host of Treet TV’s Moda Fashion Spotlight takes the anchor chair with grace and elegance, exuding confidence and beauty. When you meet her in person you learn that confidence is no act and her beauty lies far beneath her perfect skin. I’m meeting with her at my home, under the moonlight in the stone gazebo. She’s brought her motorcycle with her and has taken a seat on the concrete next to it, seeming to draw comfort from it. She pulls her cowboy hat down over her eyes. Lane isn’t a simple woman. She came into Second Life in July of 2007. In just three weeks she was stripping at Club Envy. In those early days of dancing she found a partner and married. Uncomfortable with her profession, he asked that she quit. “I missed dancing. All I did was pole dance. I never did lap dances. I really didn’t do that much emoting.” She leans back and laughs. “I must have been a boring stripper.” Lane soon found her addiction in SL. “This was like playing dolls and dress up. I couldn’t stop shopping. I’d begun DJing in January, 2008, but I spent everything I made on clothes.”

Modeling was the next step in her SL journey. She started saving Lindens and enrolled herself in modeling school. She had three loves, her SL husband, modeling and DJing. It’s not always clear which her first love was. “DJing was the first thing I noticed when I stomped my two brand new feet in SL. I loved that interaction between DJ and crowd. I wanted to make people feel that energy.” Lane carried her career into RL, DJing for 1069Radio.com, recently defunct. Soon you can catch her on the airwaves as BestOfSLRadio.com’s newest member. Lane is a model. On top of that she’s a top spokesperson for the modeling industry an industry that places an emphasis on proper behavior. Yet Lane bucks the unwritten rules. What drives someone who’s achieved so much success in her field to go against the flow? Lane has spent the last 21 years of her real life as a military wife, currently living in an isolated country home, and frequently left to raise her three children alone. She craved companionship, she craved an audience. She loves working a room. She loves pleasing people. DJing isn’t necessarily going to rock the modeling world, but Lane has no problem stripping down to nothing but her cowboy hat to rowdy up a crowd. The cowboy hat, however, isn’t going anywhere. So why the risky business? Ah that was a little tougher to get to,

but when it finally came, it came in a torrential outpouring of pure rage. Lane’s childhood nestled her between two loving but driven musician parents, each determined that their daughter would excel in music, not just any music. No. It had to be classical music. Lane craved more, but obediently followed the path laid before her. Her marriage bound her to a man she loves dearly, but who also tends to dominate her. DJing, stripping—breaking the rules lets her release that pressure valve that’s kept her tied in knots for so many years. Is freedom the only thing she found in SL. Oh, hell no. She found plenty of pain too. Her SL marriage ended; a split that left her empty and broken. She quickly filled that emptiness with a new love—a dangerous love. “I was hoping for a new beginning, peace happiness; a commonality that I hadn’t found before.” Recently parted, their tempestuous affair lasted eight months. There was always someone else in the relationship with them. Their association spun an ever growing web of deceit. The clincher came when he partnered openly in SL with his RL girlfriend and asked Lane to be his lover through one of his alts. At that point Lane flipped that cowboy hat back on her

“I was hoping for a new beginning, peace happiness; a commonality that I hadn’t found before.

head and took hold of the reins of her own life. “I can’t carry on a relationship while deceiving someone else. If I have to hide my relationship, why should I be in it? No one should ever have to hide their love.” She pounds her fist on the concrete. “Ever.” She’s silent for a while and finally speaks with resolve. “When someone holds me down or hurts me it makes me that much stronger. I work harder to get to another level. It brings out my creative side and my drive kicks in and I’m doing zero to 90. It’s full speed ahead.” She pushes that hat back from her eyes, gives me a hug and climbs on her bike and rides away. I smile at her quickly diminishing figure and say to the void she’s left behind her, “Full speed ahead, Harlee Lane.” Kylie Sabra

Vista Barnes and Vista Animations

Hello, Vista, thank you so much for taking time out from your very busy schedule to talk with me today. You are one of the most well known names in SL, from new residents to ones who have been here a while. How did you get your start in Second Life? I allways loved games like the Sims, or Sim city. Also 3d environments are really attractive to me. I lost hours discovering 3d scenarios in games like GTA, and Secondlife is a complete world much bigger than that. So, when i saw secondlife in the TV news in my region, i couldnt stop myself to join it *What led you to create your first animations? When i was quite new, a beauty lady told me that i need new animations for me, and she showed me how to customize my AO. That was the first step. I started to search animations for me, but i couldnt find any of my style, so i decided to see how to make my own. Once i started to do them (not too dificult since I had some knowledge) i thought on start a business. *What trends have you seen change in the way of animations since you first began?

When i started there was almost all static posesand i started with that, but i realized that animated stands was the next natural step to follow. So after the first Aos to understand how they work I created my first AOs with animated stands on it. I think that made me popular at that time, with the casual4 male ao and the Supasexy AO. That was 3 years ago, but that 2 aos are still wide used, in spite that now are not a top ones. After that we breaked the number of maximum stands in a AO, that was not a evoultion in the animations itself, but it was in the AO concept, we were the first to allow 15 stands in the same Ao notecard, that gave much more movements without repetition, making it more real. Also we added force sitground, another feature that Vista made popular. Then we started to see motion capture animations around, well in fact, mocap has been here for a while, but not really extendend on Aos. But once again we thought it was our natural step to follow. And conbine all what we have learned with the new mocap technology. Also mocap allowed us to jump to dances, and seems they are a succes, specially the Urban Sexy dances and the Tecknotic ones. Whats next? Well, seems we are at the top of technology now with mocap, and also we are at a hight level on the conversion of that mocap data to secondlife, so, we will continue for a while on this, and we will update our AO interface again, adding some new feautures that we hope become as popular as the ones we done in the past... Note that i dont want to talk about copyboting animations, that

make me really sad, but crossing fingers to see LL working hard agains it. *There are a few ways of doing animations; which method do you currently use, why, and how has this changed for you over time, from static poses to motion capture? As i said we use actually Motion capture. This is a really diferent way to work, now we need to have the ideas so clear at the moment to take the “action”. Be able to explain the actors exactly what we want. Once that is done, we have lots of “cleaning” and converting to secondlife. Unfortenately, Secondlife kills lots of the original data details, but after lots of work, we found ways to make them look great. *Where do you get your ideas for/what influences in creating your animations? I allways listen my customers, thats a great base of knowledge, but i am also a customer/player with lots of ideas. Lets say i keep all day observing real world movements, and allways thinking on new things to do. *How long do you work on an animation, from idea to finished product?

Well , that could depend. But lets say that since once we got the idea, it took us like 2 months of work to make that idea become real on secondlife. We could be much faster, but we like to loke one time and another each animation, and until we are happy 100% we dont accept them as good. *I understand you have a new HUD; would you please tell me a bit about this?􀀃 Ah yes, we have been all the first 2010 cuarter working on it. And finally we got it done. We have made a wide betatest session with more than 700 users, and the results are pretty good, so, we will start to use it in a few. We will launch a new male Ao this month using it, and also we will update all our top line aos to this new HUD. What we have done is, apart from gave it a new look much more modern, is add new features like force arms. What force arms do is a second animation generator that overide the arms position of the main Ao Animations. This means, that now you can make your avatar being with your arms crossed, hands on back, etc the time you want. Also make it random, generating hundreds of new animations on a endless AO. I recomend to see the video that we have at youtube. and pls dont laught too much of my spanglish ;) http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=vamzI6Maqpo or search for “vista animations HUD 3.0” Which creation has been the most challenging? The most fun? The

most rewarding to you ? Most challeging was sure the fist animated AO!, you cant belive how many tricks and gaps you have to fight to create a nice animated stand on SL. Most fun is allways dances, i love to have nice girls here dancing (who dont!). The most rewarding thing was the day i opened the new SIM... i was there on the middle of the party with the fireworks and for a moment I went to the sky tower for a view and there, for some seconds, I forget all what i saw from there was just pixels and I really felt so proud and happy of what i had acomplished. Is there anything that you would like people to know about you and your products and the future of animations in Second Life? I just want to say thanks for all the people that has been supporting me from the very begining. I think that I have been and I am so lucky to be considered for lots as one of the best animations “shops here on secondlife. And I can promise that i will keep working to keep on that consideration. Thanks all and I see you at Vista Animations!

Gems And Kisses Written by Krystanna Wycliffe

It was yet another beautiful day in Second Life as I waited to meet Deliziosa Vendetta of Gems & Kisses at her store. Surrounded by sparkle, shine, and wonderment, my eyes gleamed as I viewed all the treasures contained in the adorable jewelry box-shaped store. As Deliziosa stated, “it’s the perfect home for precious things.” How absolutely perfect! Deliziosa sent a limo to bring me to her as yet undisclosed sim...The future home of her upcoming New Main Store. Standing before me was a lovely lady, draped in a soft red gown, blonde hair swept up off the neck. Poised and polite, she was quick to make me feel welcome. Deliziosa Vendetta began her second life on October 11, 2007 at the encouragement of a real life friend, who knew of her love of all things

technological. Almost immediately, she wanted to buy clothes, shoes, jewelry and become beautiful. Deliziosa states, “I was impressed with the talents of the designers and curious to understand the secrets of these talents. Simply put, I wanted to know how to build.” She began her first building attempts after a few months, learning, improving, perfecting. However, Gems & Kisses didn’t come into being until May 2009. With an extensive background in computer technology, she already was proficient at Photoshop, and Illustrator. Knowing programming languages like Java and Ruby helped her in her experience as a scripter in SL, and also as a Teacher of Scripting in a few Italian sims. Even today, her desire to learn is paramount. “I still want to improve my skills with sculpted prims and animations. I’m a curious woman...Curiosity leads to the power of knowledge.” While her technological skills are learned, her artistry she credits to her maternal grandmother, who was a great artist of Jewish jewelry, or art Judaica. “Inheritance perhaps? Creating a piece of jewelry is the sum of factors, inspiration and imagination. While I am a good observer of trends, I love to launch new ideas. Gems & Kisses is a style in itself.” What’s on the forefront for Gems & Kisses? A grand opening! On the anniversary of her original store opening, May 1st, Gems & Kisses will

open the doors of its new Main Store. The new store is large and full of surprises, including gifts and sale promotions for her customers. On May 2nd, there was a grand fashion show. As the captain of the Gems & Kisses ‘We Love Life’ RFL Team, she, with the help of her Model Manager Franco Bloch, is currently organizing the 70 GK models for fashion shows especially for Relay for Life. “Gems & Kisses is a big family,” Deliziosa tells me happily. Among the new jewelry pieces set for release at the grand opening there will also be a lovely gown, named Bolshoi. “I have a great love of classical music and of course the classical ballet, “ says Deliziosa. I did a bit of research on the internet and found that there is a Bolshoi Ballet troupe; perhaps a coincidence, perhaps not. The gown is a warm, inviting red with a full flowing skirt to the ankles and a fitted bodice. Stunningly beautiful, the gown is the perfect ‘kiss’ to go with Deliziosa’s gems. Be on the lookout for more information for the Grand Opening of Gems & Kisses New Main Store, and the Fashion show to follow in either the group or subscribe-o-matic located at her current store, Jewelry (39, 186, 38).

Harry Frychester The gangster of the Rat Pack, Harry Frychester, doesn’t slip on stage through some back entrance. He makes his way through the crowd, taunting, flirting, grabbing hands along the way. He’s stolen the crowd before he even takes the stage. When he starts to sing, though, he owns them. Harry will carry you back to the day when Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. were the kings of jazz and pop. If you beg just a little, he’ll even throw in a little country.

Vincent Merricks I don’t care if you aren’t a country music fan, Vincent Merricks will win you over. If you are a boot-wearing sort, do not miss an opportunity to hear Merricks sing. His voice reverberates through your body, making it want to move and sway to that country beat. He makes the ladies fall in love, and gentlemen they’ll love you for taking them.

Mapoo Little She’s a diva. No two ways about it. Motown’s queens, Aretha and Diana, reincarnated in the beautiful temple that is Mapoo Little. Her unique voice is a blend of sound, like the strings of a fine violin. She’ll pluck at the strings of your heart. Listen carefully, you’ll find a bit of Macy Gray slinking through as well.

Amforte Clarity Beautiful. You can’t help but hear Alanis Morissette, but with what sweetness she forges her path. Whether she’s singing U2, Sarah McLachlan or The Cranberries, her style is all her own. Her voice so translucent, Clarity is a fitting name. Her acoustic guitar is the only back up for her up her voice, and she plays both instruments like a true artist.

Lexie Luan Singer and guitarist, Lexie Luan brings irreverent, no-holds-barred, unapologetic blues. Ladies you may relate to Luan’s laments. Men, you might get burned if you venture to close to the heat, but my oh my, what a fire.

Damian Carbenell Carbenell doesn’t need a soundtrack to back him up. He uses a simple formula—one unique voice plus one exquisitely played acoustic guitar equals pure gold. When you thought it couldn’t get any better, he sits down at the piano and takes his act to another level. He is a refreshing return to simplicity, whether doing Matchbox 20 covers, twisting his tongue around Jason Mraz’s complex lyrics, or playing your mind with his own compositions.

Mack Humbridge A rock guitarist with nothing but the steely sound of an electric guitar? I was skeptical. I wasn’t prepared to be mystified by his work on that instrument. Locked in place, unable to pull myself away, he skillfully peels away both a lead and base line. Ready to be blown away, plant yourself in front of this magician and let him work his magic on you.

Madmax Huet Oh Papa, play me the blues. Huet delivers blues that dig talons deep into your soul. You’ll find yourself coming back again and again to be transported to that inner space to which Huet delivers you to on a sinuous string of sound. His guitar sings songs that need no words to convey their raw thoughts.

DonFranko Dagostino Germany’s piano man, Dagostino puts on a show that is pure pleasure. His music ranges from Rat Pack covers to country, to pop. His own work is the real draw. His lyrics are emotionally paced like a rollercoaster ride escalating you to joyous highs, then plummeting to deep valleys. All you can do is hold on tight. While much of his work is performed in German, he does numbers in English as well.

AldoMinutio Abruzzo Can a guitar send you to another dimension? It can when it’s in Abruzzo’s hands. Trance music takes on a new feel when its pieces are composed of nothing but the infinite vibrations of a guitar, synthesized and mixed into a spiritual concoction that is transformational in its essence. Curl up in your favorite meditation pose and let Abruzzo carry you away.

HauntedZuzu Sorbet’s HauntedZuzu When did you start designing? I started designing clothes as the Haunted Zuzu brand in 2008. Haunted Zuzu is a side project for me, so I am not as active of a designer as I’d like to be. What has been your high point as a designer in Second Life? A well known designer told me she bought my early stuff and loved it and it inspired her to start making clothing. That was great to hear - especially since I think she one of 5 people who bought a certain skirt. If you could collaborate with another designer, who would it be and why?

There are so many talented designers that I adore in SL, but I’m not very good at collaborating. The group design projects in my design classes were hell for me. I love talking with other designers tho - it’s so interesting what inspires them, what they like to work on. What one thing that you haven’t done would you like to try in Second Life? I’d love to try role playing, but I don’t have the time. And I’d love to do fashion blogging, but again, no time! As it is the spring issue... What is your favourite aspect of Spring? All of spring is magical, except maybe allergies. I love seeing the first shoots come out of the ground, then daffodils - I love daffodils. What does the future hold for HauntedZuzu? I always have more ideas than time, so I really don’t know. Sometimes I think about trying my hand at sculpted hair, but so far I haven’t gotten brave enough yet. I just bought CS5 so I’m back to doing textures (ie clothes) so I may create some new clothes soon.
