Queensland’s feature greyhound racing program has received an enormous boost with state-wide feature prizemoney increases announced recently by Racing Queensland.

The boosts are headlined by $22,500 increases to the Winter Cup, Gold Cup and Brisbane Cup, which will now carry stakes of $130,000 each from January 1 2015, but Queensland Greyhound Racing Board Chairman Michael Byrne said the changes went well beyond the state’s flagship Group 1s. “Last year we introduced a Cup in each region during the winter carnival to make it truly state -wide and we have now been able to go one step further with significant prize money increases in both metropolitan and provincial stakes,” Mr Byrne said. “As part of these increases, every feature in the state carrying stakes less than $2,000 will receive at least a $500 increase, while all features greater than $2000 will receive an increase of at least $1,000. “On the metropolitan stage, the prizemoney increases to the Group 1 Cups, as well as the Listed Flying Amy will strengthen our carnival products and ensure the Queensland features become mainstays on the programs of the rest of the country. “We have already seen a great response among the industry following the base level prizemoney increases and these feature increases ensure we are delivering a compelling product from both a prizemoney and wagering point of view.” Racing Queensland CEO Darren Condon said the greyhound feature prizemoney increases come hot on the heels of recent thoroughbred and harness increases, which is further proof of Racing Queensland’s commitment to improve returns to participants following the new wagering deal. “In three months, we have seen base level prizemoney increase by at least 16 per cent year on year across the three codes and feature prizemoney boosted across the state,” Mr Condon said. “These increases not only provide great incentives for our local and interstate trainers and owners to captialise on the increased stakes, they also improve the quality of dogs and horses we are attracting, subsequently enhancing our wagering offering.”

Program boost for Brisbane Cup The Brisbane Cup meeting at Albion Park will be boosted with two additional races on the program in a huge coup for the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club.

The meeting will now feature 12 races, including the Group 1 Brisbane Cup which has attracted some of the country’s top greyhounds. Racing Queensland CEO Darren Condon said the addition of the races was a win for punters and participants and predicted a

huge night of racing. “We added two races to the program at the same meeting last year, which was a success and we were lucky enough to be able to repeat that this year after liaising with SKY Channel,” he said. “The Brisbane Cup is one of our premier races and we now have an even better quality undercard thanks to the additional races.” The heats of the Brisbane Cup included local heroes Iva

OK, so you want to Owning a greyhound can be one of the most rewarding decisions anyone can make.

With it comes elation, excitement, friendship, camaraderie, a day-to-day education, admiration, a handy windfall and so much more. Of course there can also be frustration, disappointment, unexpected expenses â&#x20AC;Ś and so much more. However tens of thousands of people are passionately involved in greyhound racing because the good times far exceed the not-so-good and the real rewards are far more satisfying then purely monetary returns. Racing Qld has packaged the following information as a guide: Getting started The best way to get started is to visit your local Greyhound Racing Club and speak to the racing manager at the track. They can provide you with names and numbers of trainers and breeders who regularly race at the club. A syndicate with friends, family or your work colleagues is the ideal way to get started in the industry and experience the excitement of greyhound racing. There are two types of ownership option in Queensland and there are no fees to register an Owner or Syndicate registration. 1. Sole Owner License Permitting the holder to own a greyhound. Applicants must be over 18 years. 2. Syndicates Ownership License Permitting the holder (2-19 persons) to own a greyhound. Members of a syndicate shall appoint one of the members as the delegated person and RQ shall

treat and deal with the delegated person as if the person was the sole owner. 3. Greyhound retirement and care It is the ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s responsibility to ensure that his or her greyhound is cared for once its racing days have finished. Our Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP QLD) can help you find suitable homes for retired racers but many owners take their ex-racers home with them and are rewarded with the most doting and gentle of pets. It cannot be stressed enough that the sport of greyhound racing values its reputation for putting greyhound welfare as its highest priority. If you do not have plans or have not considered what you are going to do with your greyhound when its racing days are over, then we would rather you think again before purchasing a racing greyhound. Of course, we want you to become an owner

and become a part in this fantastic sport. However, we want responsible owners to join the sport and ensure all greyhounds are cared for post its racing career. We recommend you read the ownership information on the Racing Qld website and download a Greyhound Information kit before making a decision and investing in greyhound ownership. How much does it cost to own a greyhound? An unraced greyhound pup aged between 3 to 6 months, will fetch anywhere between $2,000 and $5,000 AUD, depending on its breeding and that price will increase as they get older. In some cases, greyhound who have been reared and already demonstrate winning capabilities can sell for $15,000 to $30,000, if not more. Which is why doing your research into the greyhound blood lines with the help of an expert is advisable.

After the initial outlay of buying a pup, an owner you should expect to spend approximately $70 p/week in expenses getting greyhounds to the track. These costs will cover rearing, breakingin periods, spelling and pre-training fees for greyhounds between 3 months to 18 months of age. (Excludes any major veterinary fees) Steps to becoming a greyhound owner: 1. Visit your local greyhound racing club, speak with the racing manager and meet with breeders or trainers. 2. Most trainers can assist when negotiating and can provide you with some guidance. 6. Verify that the breeder has current veterinary certificates and paperwork before closing the deal or exchanging money. 7. Ensure your greyhound is micro chipped as you cannot complete transfer documentation if the pup has no identification. If the greyhound is not branded or micro-chipped; 8. The seller can make an appointment with our branding stewards to have the dog identified and branded. 9. Obtain greyhound ownership transfer

documents from the breeder (Unnamed greyhound transfer application, buyers form and seller form) change the ownership into your name. 10. If the greyhound is unnamed, you will need to submit a naming application to the controlling body in the state or territory where the greyhound was whelped. 11. Once named, every greyhound will be issued with a registration ID card from Racing Queensland or the controlling body in that state or territory 12. We encourage owners to spend time with their greyhound even if you decide to have them trained by someone else. 13. Be patient… Give your greyhound time to learn and grow into a star. Trainers will advise you when your dog is ready to race, what distance it will be most suited to and when it’s ready to progress to the next stage in its racing career.

Where do I buy a greyhound? a) Greyhound Auctions The Ipswich puppy auction is an annual event where local and interstate breeders come to sell their greyhound pups. The auction is held at the Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club in August. When buying a greyhound at auction, it is important you are given the correct documentation on completion of the purchase. These should include the greyhounds stud book / racing card issued by Racing Queensland or the State regulatory body for greyhound racing , transfer of ownership forms and recent veterinary certificates. b) Private Sale – Classified Advertisements Trade publications including Chase newspaper regularly carry advertisements for greyhound sales. Here are some useful tips to help you make a good purchase;

Golden Rules Get the deal right before you hand over your money, with greyhounds there are no book prices and sales are usually open to negotiation. Study comparative form before you buy. The time difference on soft ground and on a good ground can be up to half a second. What was the fastest time of the night? What was the fastest time of the week? When you purchase your greyhound, obtain the necessary transfer documents required to change the ownership into your name. Never buy a greyhound without an up-to-date vet’s certificate. Make sure the certificate is from a known vet who has a good knowledge of greyhounds. Although it may seem a long way off, make sure you have retirement plans for your greyhound for when they finish racing. Will you be able to find the greyhound a suitable home? Will you continue to pay to have them in retirement kennels? Finally, if something doesn’t feel right or you’re just not sure, don’t do the deal. It’s a long time since 72-year-old Brian has had a bet, but he couldn’t resist the $8 on offer about Iva Vision and had a small wager. Box one runner Banjo Boy, who was expected to test Iva Vision for the early lead, was a scratching due to a spider bite. The reserve Oakvale Destiny went into box one. Iva Vision led the charge to the first turn. Oakvale Destiny loomed large at the home turn but Iva Vision kicked on powerfully to the line to score by one and a quarter lengths in a slick 29.27 seconds. Brian Young is what could be called a typical Kiwi. In the late 1960s, when based near

Auckland, he came to Australia with his family for a look, liked what he saw and never got around to going back home! “My introduction to greyhounds was when driving past the Kumeu track in Auckland, seeing the lights on and wondering what was happening. We went in and watched a few races and were instantly hooked. There was an announcement of a giveaway greyhound bitch and I thought what the heck – let’s give it a go. We took her home, we used to grow tomatoes as a business and we just fed her lots of scraps. “After about eight weeks of doing nothing with her, we didn’t even have a collar or lead, my wife

Eveline said the bitch was running around the yards really fast and her action looked good. “I contacted the club and they advised me to put her in a feature race for which they were short of numbers. So I did that, even though the bitch had been a shortcourse sprinter, she started in a 700 metres race and led all the way to win. “Her name was Phantom Charm, we bred from her and got Scottish Command who won the NZ Hurdle Championship. “We had a car accident and were in hospital for a few months. Upon release from there, we weren’t capable of walking, which is how greyhounds were trained in those days. So we

gave the dogs away and took on training pacers. We came to Queensland with some horses for a look and, despite intending to return home, never got around to it. “In Australia we’ve always been based north of Brisbane, at Redcliffe, Deception Bay and now Morayfield. “We decided to get back into greyhounds and run it as very much a family business. We have five children who are all interested and so are some of their girlfriends and partners. Peter is the trainer but I’d say Eveline does more work than the rest of us combined.’’ The Youngs have three adjoining properties at Morayfield and that has enabled them to install a 200 metres straight track. “We can put pups and even racing dogs up the straight at home. For more serious work we go to the Glasshouse Mountains trial track ,’’ Peter explained. “That facility is just so good, northside trainers are very fortunate to have it. There’s an uphill run but not too steep and the dogs work hard. The grass surface is superb, it’s a very well managed complex.’’ Brian says recent visits to Melbourne to race Iva Vision were made enjoyable by, not only winning the Shootout and a Melbourne Cup Prelude, but for the way he was treated by the Sandown club and Victorian trainers. “I’ve stayed with Kel and Jackie Greenough who couldn’t have been more hospitable and helpful. Jet takes final flight

DAVID BRASCH BRIAN Kutner and his lovely wife Yvonne have been devastated since having to put down their great galloper Token Jet.

Token Jet (Token Prince-Miss Corleone) lived all his life in the shadow of his Topgun winning brother Black Enforcer, raced in partnership by the Kutner’s son Brian Jnr and his mate Richie Wisener. But Token Jet was a special greyhound winning 30 races and 26 of those came at Albion Park. He is believed to be the only greyhound in this country to win 10 top grade races in succession at the one track. Token Jet also was a multiple Group finalist and a feature race winner. He also set two track records. Brian and Yvonne gave him his chance at stud and from very limited opportunities Token Jet was a handy sire. His son Roman Nose Best was a finalist in both the Gold Coast and Ipswich Cups. His litter was outstanding. Brian reports a heat wave in Queensland took its toll on Token Jet. “He already had cancer in a hind leg,” he said. “The heat really knocked him about.” The Kutners still have Black Enforcer at their home and admit he too is now suffering the effects of age. And their litter sister Texas Woman is also still alive at the property at the foot of the Toowoomba range.

The recent announcement of feature prize money boosts to the greyhound industry caps off what has been a great year for the sport in Queensland.

From the new wagering deal to base level prizemoney increases and now feature increases, the future of the industry in Queensland is looking bright. To have our three main cups race for $130,000 and our provincial features increase significantly is great boost to our feature program next year. We are also pleased to be able to continue the Cups concept during next year’s carnival with each region receiving a prize money boost for their respective Cup. We have already seen a great response among the industry following the base level prizemoney increases and these feature increases ensure we are delivering a compelling product from both a prize money and wagering point of view. That sums up last month’s Group 3 City of Ipswich Gold Cup final. Amy O’Reilly had Flash Houdini drawn box seven and litter brother Hopping Houdini as the first reserve. Three days before the race O’Reilly scratched Flash Houdini due to a toe injury and Hopping Houdini obtained a start from box seven. As so often happens, some people tried to read something into that scratching. Was Hopping Houdini more fancied than Flash Houdini? It’s all part of the theatre that happens with big race scratchings of kennelmates. Reg Kay had Happy Haswell in box four and also Tear Away Size in box five. Haswell. Tony Brett’s Placid Planet obtained the start from box five. That dog normally runs straight or wide, not hard left, from the start. Did Kay prefer to have Placid Planet in box five than his own bitch? A ridiculous suggestion, of course. Why would anyone want to scratch their runner to give somebody else a start ? But the doubters are always out there. When Tear Away Size won her Cup heat in the slowest time, Kay publicly expressed surprise that the bitch didn’t run quicker than her 30.62. The split webbing was some explanation for that. And so to the race, with both reserves in the field. Happy Haswell began on terms with his rivals and outpaced them to the first turn. Box six runner Farmer’s Gold fell at the first turn. Happy Haswell careered away to a huge lead mid race and turned for home about a dozen lengths in front. In the early part of the home straight Farmer’s Gold

appeared, running head on towards the lure and Happy Haswell. Farmer’s Gold brushed the lure and baulked Happy Haswell. Stewards posted the ‘hold all tickets’ notice and reviewed the incident. Happy Haswell was the only greyhound affected by Farmer’s Gold turning back and stewards gave the ‘all clear’ after a short deliberation. Happy Haswell (Surf Lorian – Teenage Dream) picked up $25,000 for owner-trainer Kay. Second home was the Tom Tzouvelis trained Le Sirenuse who collected $7,000. Peter O’Reilly’s Yogi Blue clocked in third for $3,000. The reserves didn’t figure in the finish. Placid Planet ran fourth and Hopping Houdini seventh. Happy Haswell’s winning time was a race record 30.23, bettering the previous best of 2013 winner Regal Lauryn who won in 30.26. Regal Lauryn’s dam Queen Lauryn holds the track

record at 30.01 which she set in 2008. “I reckon Happy Haswell lost two to three lengths when Farmer’s Gold baulked him. So on that basis he would have gone very close to the track record if unimpeded,’’ Kay suggested. If you listened to racecaller John Brasch, Happy Haswell won the City of Ipswich Gold Cup by eleven and a half lengths. That’s what was posted on the track’s semaphore board. And that’s what showed in a results sheet provided by the Ipswich club. However, the results on the RQ linked website ‘the dogs.com.au’ show Happy Haswell winning by thirteen lengths. Who is right? The answer, somewhat strangely, is both! Racing Queensland chief grader Doug Lutherborrow says there is a discrepancy for margins for every race in Queensland at the moment.

“It’s because the Finishlynx system used by clubs in Queensland uses a different standard measurement than Ozchase (RQ),’’ Lutherborrow said. “The club uses 0.07 as one length and Ozchase uses 0.063.’’ “It is in the pipeline to develop a nationwide standard measurement. Hopefully this will happen sooner than later.’’ Another outlet, the National Greyhound Form, lists Happy Haswell’s winning margin as 12.6 lengths. For as long as I can remember, there’s been conjecture concerning whether one length is .06 or .07 of a second. Some trial clockers, as an example, use .06, others calculate margins using .07. A definitive answer may be on the way, judging by Lutherborrow’s comments.

Cup a tall order PAUL DOLAN Burj Khalifa is one of the best named greyhounds racing at present.

He’s a big dog, very big in fact. When he won the recent Capalaba Cup final, the son of Where’s Pedro and Georgia Moira tipped the scales at 41.8 kilograms. Burj Khalifa is the name of the world’s tallest man made structure, a 829 metres skyscraper in Dubai. Trainer Glen Monkman says Burj Khalifa is particularly suited to straight track racing and not

only because of his size. “He won his maiden at Bulli when with the Matic kennel. But he broke a couple of toes as a young dog and isn’t comfortable going around corners. Ruth Matic wanted to send the dog up here so he could race regularly at Capalaba,’’ Monkman said. When Burj Khalifa won his heat of the Capalaba Cup, he ran 19.57, the fastest winning time for the track’s 366 metres course this year. In the $3,150 to the winner final the dog scored in 19.51. The track record is 19.36 to the credit of Migaloo Magic which was trained by Ray Burman. “My dog jumped quickly in the final. Greg

Finding ‘best eight’ or top grade races at Capalaba on a regular basis is a problem for Monkman and the small number of trainers who have greyhounds of that standard. Bigger program has its benefits PAUL DOLAN Race clubs are continually put on notice that they must improve their efficiency.

In Queensland, a maximum of ten races is the norm for a TAB card. Why can’t we have a dozen races like they do in super efficient Victoria? The first stumbling block might be – where is the prizemoney for the extra two races per meeting going to come from? And are there enough dogs to go around? With a bit of shuffling of race dates, very little extra money, if any, would need to be found. Nor would we need any extra runners. Consider this. In the south-east corner of the state, Albion Park conducts four race meetings per week and Ipswich has three. If the Sunday card at Albion Park was ditched, you could add, say, six of those races to Albion Park’s three remaining meetings and the other four races could be added

We would still have seventy races run each week at the two venues, but on six days rather than seven. Betting turnover wouldn’t necessarily increase with the same number of races. But wouldn’t it be a case of the Brisbane club benefitting from a reduction in wages of the scrapped meeting? Wages saved by cancelling the Sunday meeting would more than cover any extra time that staff would be required for the eleven or twelve race meetings on the other days of the week. Ipswich’s costs may go up slightly with eleven or twelve races but looking at the big picture

rather than individual clubs, more races on less days equals an efficiency improvement of costs. Brisbane club CEO Luke Gatehouse partly agrees. “Sunday is our costliest day for wages. If that meeting was shunted, I’d like to see eleven races at our other meetings, rather than twelve. And I would want starting times set so that the duration of the meeting isn’t longer than at present. That way, we would be making a decent saving in overheads,’’ he said. Expanding Ipswich meetings by a race or two isn’t straight forward. The kennel block can only house sufficient greyhounds for ten races.

About 18 months ago, the club investigated making renovations which would have involved expanding the kennel block by building new vet and stewards rooms. The cost was around $80,000 which Racing Queensland couldn’t justify at the time. The same would still be the case, given that construction is about to commence at Logan. When Cronulla Park at Logan commences racing, there’s likely to be a reduction in the number of race meetings at Albion Park and Ipswich anyway. If Logan becomes as popular as everyone hopes, it would make sense to install sufficient kennels to conduct twelve race programmes there.

FROM THE CALLER’S BOX By Paul Dolan

Welcome to episode three of ‘From the Caller’s Box’.

The editor of this newspaper has given me a free rein to cover any topic. At the same time, he has put in a request. That’s fair enough, it’s his paper! He would like to know about what I consider to be the top five races that I have called. Whilst I’d prefer to write about somebody else rather than myself, there are some races which are special to me. Not because they were the richest or highest profile races. They just remain as special memories for various reasons. Some readers would have been there on some of these days or nights. So, in chronological order rather than any particular preference, here we go. Through the generosity of the late Beverley Behm and Dr. John Murray, I had a share in a bitch named Empire Dancer. The owners were Beverley, myself and fellow media workers Michael Maxworthy, Wayne Wilson and Danny Ryan. In the case of Danny, this was obviously before he became a greyhound steward. Empire Dancer was a talented performer, trained for us by Pauline Fruend. Her biggest win was the Gabba President’s Cup and I was the track’s caller at the time. She was originally first reserve for the Cup and obtained a start after there was a scratching. She led from the first turn in the 704 metres event and held on for a gritty win

Sparks flew when Rapid Journey hit the grass at Beenleigh. over another very good stayer of the time, Cynthia Suttle’s Janine’s Pick. Apart from letting out a ‘Go Empire’ when our little ‘gypsy’’ hit the front at the first turn, I think it was a fairly emotion-free call of the race. And a real big buzz when she won.

THE TOP GUN, OLYMPIC PARK, 1994.

The great Queensland bitch Toban Leah was in the Top Gun for the second year running. She ran fifth in the 1993 event which was the very first Top Gun decided. I felt that it would be a good promotion if I was

able to go to Olympic Park and call the Top Gun back to the Queensland audience of radio TAB. It was possible to use a spare broadcast box at Olympic Park, but a Telstra line had to be installed. The cost was $500. Queensland studmaster Peter Denaro agreed to sponsor the broadcast for that amount. As the cost allowed use of the line for the whole night, I broadcast each race on Top Gun night back to Queensland. It was an enjoyable and rewarding task. Toban Leah had box eight and just never got across and she finished eighth. However, what was satisfying to me was the fact that the winner

was the Dennis Reid trained New Fox. I was a member of the selection panel for that year’s Top Gun. New Fox had not been put forward by the Sydney based members of the panel because they thought Dennis Reid was a Queenslander. I didn’t nominate New Fox as a Queenslander because the dog was trained in NSW. I quickly brought to the club’s attention this matter. Reid lives at Old Bonalbo which is in the hills behind Casino and whilst he is an ‘adopted Queenslander’ because he has raced so much in and around Brisbane and the Gold Coast, strictly speaking, he’s a cockroach not a cane toad! So New Fox got into the field, drew box seven, was 16 to 1 ($17) and led from the first turn. You could say every Top Gun has been of the highest quality but that year, the second running of the

house to classic racing race, the field was an absolute cracker. New Fox beat, in order, Rusty Lee, Golden Currency, Light of Fire, Kyasha, Gallant Ruler, Mancunian Girl and Toban Leah. I always have and still admire Dennis Reid as a brilliant trainer and a good bloke. He had trained a couple of greyhounds for me and to call his dog winning the Top Gun was something special. To this day, I still say he’s one of the best trainers Australia has ever seen.

The photo finish took about five minutes to be developed, and I stumbled along with various anecdotes. Eventually, the number semaphored was that of the dog on the inside. Phew, that was a relief. You would hate to be wrong in your only guest call at any track. The crowd seemed to enjoy the experience, as did I.

NATIONAL DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIP, ALBION PARK, 2011:

QUEENSLAND CUP (HEAT), BEENLEIGH, 1998.

Sydney dog Rapid Journey was the toast of the nation throughout 1997-98, clearly the best sprinter around. John and Jane Carruthers enjoyed travelling around with the dog, he was a star wherever he raced. They nominated him for the Queensland Cup and I’d think he was the best dog to set foot on Beenleigh in a race since the mighty Zoom Top some thirty years prior. Steve Kavanagh did parade the great Brother Fox at Beenleigh one day but he never raced there. Rapid Journey’s win in his heat of the Queensland Cup was a special race call for me. I’ll swear I saw sparks flying as he charged around the then grass track in a world of his own. The lure driver Bevan Williamson had the throttle on full speed all the way. Everyone knew the track record was going to be lowered. I felt pumped up, calling one of the greatest sprinting greyhounds we had ever seen. He won that heat by twelve lengths in track record time of 31.68. Rapid Journey won the Queensland Cup final the next week by four lengths in 31.75.

DUBLIN and KILKENNY, IRELAND, 1999

While holidaying in Ireland, I was asked by the chairman of the Irish Greyhound Board, Paschal

Dashing Corsair provided us all with one of the greatest swan songs. Taggart, to call at race at Dublin’s premier track, Shelbourne Park. Irish (and English) tracks do not have an on course racecaller. The races are run in silence, as you would see in this country at a trial session. Shelbourne Park has no broadcast box overlooking the track. I called a race from a television monitor in the below ground level tote room. Taggart and his board members went outside to watch the race and listen to my call. They returned to say I had received a standing ovation from the 6,000 strong Saturday night crowd. Unfortunately, I heard none of that, being down in the equivalent of a dungeon. The next day I accompanied Taggart to a

Sunday afternoon race meeting at Kilkenny. Again, I was invited to call a race and accepted. Kilkenny is very much like Beenleigh was, with a quaint wooden grandstand and people lining the fence around the track. There were about 1000 people in attendance. Like Shelbourne, there was no broadcast box. I called a 700 metres race using a hand held microphone, standing in the grandstand surrounded by punters, most of whom had a Guinness in their hand. Two dogs went head and head for the entire trip so it was a colourful race to call. At the finish, I declared the inside dog as the winner by a nose.

I think most racecallers get attached to a top class greyhound if they call that performer on a regular basis. And so it was with me and Dashing Corsair. The final of the 2011 National Distance was full of drama. Dashing Corsair had to be carried off the track, due to a back injury, the week before when second in the state final to Abby Shiraz. That second placing got ‘Harry’ into the grand final but he looked in serious doubt of being able to take his place. Dwyer and Desley worked on the dog’s problem all week and he was cleared to start. But there was that nagging doubt in many people’s minds, mine included, that this was a recipe for disaster. This four and a half years old veteran was going to be retired, whatever the result, after this race. Could he get round in one piece? Could he go out a winner? After leading then being headed, Dashing Corsair kicked clear on straightening for home and the fairytale story was about to become true. Victorian bitch Lady Arko then unleashed a powerful finishing burst. I wanted to jump out of the broadcast box and lift Harry across the line. It wasn’t necessary and he scrambled home, the winner by a neck margin. Good for you Harry and thanks for some great memories, that win in particular.

Queensland’s Greyhound Adoption Program dogs will have a Christmas feast to look forward to this holiday season thanks to the RNA Canine Committee, which donated 250kg of kibble to the program’s annual Christmas appeal. Queensland GAP program coordinator Gail Lane said the RNA donation and generosity of Councillor Lionel Blumel is heart-warming and also the first for this year’s appeal. “We can’t thank the RNA Canine Committee enough for their generous donation. 250kg is a huge amount of food and a great way to start this year’s appeal.” Any donations for GAP can be made through www.gapqld.com.au. “We are lucky to have so many great supporters and volunteers out there and every donation made goes to a great cause,” Ms Lane said. “If people would like to go one step further and become foster carers or take in a retired greyhound, they should also get in touch with GAP to find out how they can become involved.”

Racing Queensland CEO Darren Condon remains confident of a July, 2015, commencement of racing on the ‘one turn’ track at Cronulla Park, Logan, on Brisbane’s southern outskirts.

Speaking with David Fowler on radio TAB’s ‘Monday’s Experts’ program, Condon said he can’t see that’s there’s anything to stop a June 30 next year completion of the construction. The Logan site is a former rubbish tip and concerns have been expressed as to whether the site is contaminated, perhaps due to animal carcases, chemicals and asbestos deposits when the area operated as a refuse tip around twenty years ago. “Testing shows Cronulla Park to be a safe environment,’’ Condon said. Concerning the construction of a new grandstand at Albion Park which would incorporate judge, video, stewards, lure driver and racecaller facilities as well as long overdue modern amenities for racegoers, Condon says a business case is about to be submitted to the State Government for consideration. “Governments like to make sure that they are getting value for any taxpayer dollars spent and they look at such applications very thoroughly before committing,’’ Condon stated.

Price a shock, not the win PAUL DOLAN If there were bookmakers fielding at Ipswich, trainer Clint Argent would be their hero.

Argent’s bitch Tell Me When won a maiden final over 520 metres at Ipswich last month. She produced a strong finishing run to score like you would expect a short priced favourite to do. But she paid $77.40 on the win tote. “I didn’t have a cent on her but gave her a good chance. I couldn’t believe she paid that much,’’ the trainer said. Tell Me When ran fourth in the maiden heat the previous week, beaten more than ten lengths. The maiden final was her tenth race start and she had managed just one placing, a third, at Ipswich previously. “At almost every start she has struck trouble at the first turn. This was the first time she didn’t lose six lengths due to interference. I had been nominating for 600 metres maidens but there have been none run anywhere. I even put in nominations for 0 to 3 win races over 630 metres at Ipswich but preference was

Argent pins his faith on a staying future for Tell Me When on the fact that she is clean winded. Argent enjoys having a greyhound or two in work. He is an officer in the Queensland Fire Service, based at Chermside on Brisbane’s northside. He enjoys participating in Christmas activities at Albion Park which includes providing mini firetruck rides for children on race nights. Nobody is quite sure whether the $77.40 win dividend for Tell Me When is a record for a greyhound in Queensland. Argent thinks he saw a

greyhound pay a win dividend of over $80 one day but says that may have been interstate. Tattsbet’s general manager of racedays operations, Shane Adams, says he has not seen a win dividend for a greyhound in excess of $77.40. “But I can’t confirm that is a record because we don’t keep separate figures for the three racing codes,’’ Adams said. “The highest win dividend paid out by Tattsbet was when it was known as the Queensland TAB. It was on a gallops race at Flemington in December, 1982. The winner, Moiarellen, paid $765.25 for a one dollar win bet,’’ Adams said.

Field of dreams in a novice A humble novice race at Albion Park on a Thursday proved most lucrative for Pam and John Field. Pam trains winner Don’t Go Quietly and litter brother Get Involved. They finished first and second, for prizemoney of $5,250 for first and $1,500 for second. Not only that, Don’t Go Quietly was drawn as the trainer’s jackpot dog and Pam collected a further $1,100. Pam and husband John, who race under the ownership banner of the ‘Hummer Syndicate’, bred the litter by Oaks Road out of Mercy Rule, a good 520 and 600 metres for them. Mercy Rule won 19 of her 108 starts so this litter might have longevity on the racetrack too.

Albion Pk back and firing The BGRC is continuing to make improvements to the Albion Park Raceway for participants to ensure their race day and trial experiences are efficient and more enjoyable. This has been evident in recent times with the introduction of the 395m walkway for handlers to catch their own greyhounds, industrial fans installed in the wash bay, additional hoses added to the trial wash down area, new television monitors installed in the kennels, a modification to the preview pen entry gate at the request of participants - just to name a few. A lot quieter this month compared to last, but nothing runs to plan in my life.

We will start with the paper delivery run on the 30th of October. What a nightmare! Get to the depot to pick up the November Chase only to find out there were printing press issues: ‘Papers won’t be here till 1pm mate!’ I have 4 hours to kill. I had originally planned to be at Grafton dogs by 1pm (2pm their time. Bloody daylight saving!) So I would get the last 5 races. So what am I gunna do for 4 hours. I go to the closest Maccas and get a coffee and a sausage Macmuffin. I stay there for one hour. But like any good dog punter that we are, I find the closest TAB which happens to be up the road at Virginia. I thought this will do me. Air-conditioned!

I will stay here and watch the first two races at Grafton. Pat McLeod – the boss - rings me at 11.30 and tells me the papers are 30 minutes away. Bewdy! So I get back to the depot at midday and the papers have just turned up. Chase bundles on board and I am off. First stop Qld Racing at Deagon. With Albion Park in recess next stop is supposed to be Ipswich.

But I need to get to Grafton ASAP. So I decide to call into Peter Bellamy’s place at Beenleigh. He says he will get Lemonade Tommy to take Ipswich’s papers up there tonite. Two hours saved so down the Coast. Through Bangalow then to Lismore and my next stop Casino. My car automatically turns right at the Charcoal Inn to go to the Bottlemart bottle shop..

where I get my normal six-pack of Carlton Dry for the trip from Casino to Grafton. Arrive Grafton 5.30 NSW time. Dogs are long finished by now so I grab my mother Maxine and her partner George ward and go straight to the Grafton District Services Club for a punt on the Ipswich dogs and a few harpooners of Carlton Dry. (I told you Gaz it would be a good move getting Carlton Dry on tap at the club) I run into my mates Rosco Gorman, Mick ‘The Coach’ Landrigan and Steve Hackett. What a crew! I stay till race seven winning something small. I get home to mum’s about 10pm what a long day! Friday the 31st October: Leave Grafton at 9am. First stop Casino 10am. At the dog track to drop off their papers I run into Heardy Greebs. I also leave Lismore’s papers there as Lisa Vanderstok gets there later in the day to take her photos. The Group 1 winner became a wonderful producer and Golden Fox’s damline continues today through stars like Lochinvar Marlow. In 1990, Reid whelped a litter of New TearsGolden Fox pups that included Pearls Are Tears. But also in that litter came Lawnton Cup winner Under Thunder, and Golden Mike (a Melbourne Cup finalist and twice an Adelaide Cup finalist) as well as Travelling Tears an Australian Cup finalist. Golden Fox also became the mother of such stars as Topgun winner New Fox, Burst Asunder, Travelling Ghost, Urgency, Golden Clover, Golden Lyn, Outrun, Eden’s return, Needles And Pins, Every Possible, Weeping Vixen, Reifenhauser and many, many more. Among her daughters was Five Dimensions who would become the dam of Royal Impact (by Cry Havoc) now a great sire in Ireland. Pearls Are Tears had everything going for her. She was mated to Malawi’s Prince and from that litter came a handy bitch called Snug Fit a finalist in a Gold Coast Rising Star Classic in 1997. Snug Fit was raced by the great Leo Hoare. Leo died and his wife Dot, who is still alive today, loaned Snug Fit to Tony and Jane Apap for one litter. They mated her to Bobniak. Some of the pups were sent to the Ipswich Auction and that’s where Apap’s mate Kevin Macintosh stepped in. He bought a blue bitch from the litter for ‘not very much money’. Kevin reckons it was around $1000. Kevin admits ‘good dogs keep slipping through my hands’. He is well aware that blue BobniakSnug Fit bitch he bought for next to nothing has virtually started a dynasty for the Youngs. Kevin named her Leataro. “I broke her in myself and right from the first moment she did something she did it fast,” he said. “She was a flying machine.” But Kevin Macintosh is always looking for a quick return on his greyhounds. He tried to sell Leataro. “I trialled her up Capalaba one morning and she ran 20.00 and Chicka Scott clocked her and told me nothing had run that fast on trial morning for years,” he said. Word of a super fast race bitch got through to AFL legend Tony Lockett. He flew north to see her trial. Tony Apap picked him up and the footy star and Apap headed to Postman’s Ridge to trial Leataro. “She didn’t run as quick as she had and Locket offered me $10,000 for her,” said Kevin. “I wanted $15,000 so she stayed with me.” Kevin packed her onto a plane and sent her to Peter Daprain to train in Victoria. She promptly dropped a back muscle and came back home. “I gave her to Ricky Fall because at the time he was having a lot of success getting dogs with injuries back to the track. Ricky won a race at Ipswich with her from a couple of starts,” said Kevin. It wasn’t long after that Leataro was finished, a wonderful career just a disappointing one-time possibility. “I was going to breed with her,” said Kevin. “But at the time I also had a bitch called Miss Hawkins and she had won quite a few at Albion Park and I thought she was the better proposition.” But those in the industry knew how good Leataro could have been. One of those was Gerry Hardy a long-time dog man who was running a straight track out at Mango Hill at the time. Gerry offered to take the bitch and breed a litter with her. That’s when Brian Young came on the scene. It was early in 2007 and Brian and his family, who lived at Deception Bay at the time, had got into greyhound racing. Their between races training was done at Mango Hill straight. Brian offered to pay the service fee for The A Team based champion sire Surf Lorian for a couple of the pups. Kevin Macintosh would also get one of the pups. When the litter what whelped, Brian picked a dog and a bitch, Kevin got a bitch. Tragedy struck at the Youngs. One of the pups he had picked died. “I told Gerry that one of my two pups had died and he offered to replace it,” said Brian. “But I said no. I was content to put up with the misfortune.” Gerry was insistent, but it also meant he would be able to get rid of the smallest bitch in the litter and one that no one wanted. Brian took her, named her Visualization and she went to the races to win 17 times and be placed in 20 of her 51 starts. She was also a finalist in the

Kevin MacIntosh plays a vital role in the Iva Vision story Group 2 Vince Curry Maiden. Brian placed her to perfection. With such a quality bitch, the Youngs were always going to have breeding plans for Visualization. This too is where fate stepped in. Brian is the first to admit his knowledge of bloodlines is basic. He had become friends with Mal Dawson who at the time was racing a Group class dog called Gnarley Boy (Where’s Pedro-Suna Silence). Despite that dog’s great exploits, Mal never stopped raving about the ability of his litter brother Ivan Brown. Ivan had broken down as a pup. He finally got to the races to win four and be placed five times in just 12 starts. But he also ran a Maitland 400m track record. Mal and Brian planned the mating of Ivan Brown and Visualization. It would combine Suna Silence and Surf Lorian through the middle of the pedigree and that was a mating that had produced Group stars Gnarraloo and Surfin Silence. But Brian saw the merit in duplicating Bobniak in the mating and also the fact Malawi’s Prince would come into it doubled and in a strong position. He had done his bloodlines homework for sure.

Brian promised one of the pups to Gerry Hardy. “We decided to keep the bitches from the litter and had three males,” said Brian. “I told Gerry I would pick him out a dog which I did.” Brian went out on business the day Gerry planned to come around to the now Morayfield property where the Youngs have their kennels to collect his pup. “I told my wife Eveline the ear brand of the pup I had picked out for Gerry,” said Brian. When he got home that day, he quickly realised Gerry had left with one of the other pups. “I rang Gerry and told him what had happened,” said Brian. “But I told him not to worry about it that he should keep the pup he now had. But Gerry would have nothing of it and the next day he returned that pup and took the dog I had selected for him.” The pup Gerry brought back now races as Iva Vision who has already won $100,000 and two Group races. He is fast emerging as stud potential. “Gerry did get a very fast dog,” said Brian. “He broke in super and at his first trial at Ipswich over 431 metres he went 25.10 but did a stopper tendon in the trial.” In the meantime, the Young family had picked up a couple of partners.

“John Conlon lives in WA and for year after year he has been buying greyhounds without any success,” said Brian. “I had sold him a dog some time ago and we stayed in touch. “When this litter was born, we decided to let John and his good friend John Miller into a syndicate to race them all.” The rest is history. John Conlon has become so fixated with the success of Iva Vision, Visualize It and the rest of the litter that it has become worldwide news. “John is a fanatical fan of the great Scottish soccer team Celtic,” said Brian. “And Celtic has embraced our dogs and their success. Every time they race or do something special (which is often) it appears on the Celtic website.” And with the popularity of Celtic you can only imagine the following Iva Vision and his brothers and sisters now have. John Conlon rings Brian Young twice a day to talk dogs. The Youngs have since done a repeat mating of Ivan Brown-Visualization (now 12 months old) and the bitch has since whelped a third litter, two dogs and two bitches to Bogie King that are just babies. But the story does not end there. Re-enter Kevin Macintosh. Kevin got a bitch from the Surf Lorian-Leataro litter and he named her Surfing Blonde. She won four races but Kevin decided to accept an offer to sell her to a client of the John and Glenda Dart kennel. “But before she could race, she broke down, so I took her back,” said Kevin. “I was going to breed with her but decided not to. Brian Young offered to take her.” Brian put her to Bit Chili and got just one pup, a winner. Brian then gave Surfing Blonde to some friends. While galloping at the beach, Surfing Blonde wandered off and could not be found. Weeks later, Kevin Macintosh got a phone call from the local pound. They had his bitch Surfing Blonde. “I went and got her and offered her on the internet as a giveaway broodbitch,” he said. She was snapped up by a breeder in NSW who put her to Swift Fancy and then on sold her to Steve Meimetis and his daughter Angela in South Australia. Steve and Angela have since put Surfing Blonde to Ivan Brown in a bid to recreate Iva Vision and Visualize It. And Steve Meimetis and Brian Young have become great friends. So much so that Steve flew from Adelaide to Melbourne just to be in the catching pen to pick up Iva Vision after he had won the Sandown Shootout.

Forget Chinese whispers QGBOTA President TONY ZAMMIT More positive news about our long-awaited track at Logan.

If you remember back a few months ago in the GBOTA news segment of the Chase newspaper, I wrote about RQ staff members being at race tracks showing owners and trainers the plans for the new Logan track asking their opinions regarding track size, race distances etc. They were to be congratulated for showing industry participants that as we are all involved, our say means something. The good news now is that the plans have been sent out to various building and construction companies for quotes of costings to start the project. The main thing is it will be started as soon as possible and this is great news for us all. The QGBOTA committee and members are all behind the project, contrary to rumours circulating that we are against it. If you read any articles in the Chase written by myself, they have been positive for a new track. Rumours are always doing the rounds in this industry and if any are supposed to come from the QGBOTA, please come and speak to me or the committee about your concerns and we will endeavour to sort them out as we have done in the past. I will consult someone at Board level or RQ and report on them. It was great to see the work completed on the drainage and resurfacing of Albion Park. All reports were very good from the two weeks of

For NSW South Coast bookie, Grant Hamilton his living at Wollongong is just perfect, he has seen the major sporting events of the world, spent time in jail, wait, what was that, in jail. Grant was in Turkey at the time and failed to pay his overnight motel bill which landed him in prison for a few hours. “I can laugh about it as it was not serious, it is one of those moments you look back on without disgrace, I never killed anyone,” Grant explained. Grant has a long history at displaying the odds, 34 years in fact and now in 2014, he is thinking about the future and whether his stand is required in these times. “Corporate firms and fixed odds have just about killed off the on-course bookmaker and when you are the only one at the track you haven’t got a lot of flexibility,” Hamilton expressed. It all started at a very young age in the days when bookmaking was behind closed doors. Grant started in the family SP business taking calls and bets over the phone after school for his mum Margaret. “Back in those days clients could have 50 cents each way, the SP bookies took anything,” Grant remembers. Then in December, 1975, Grant obtained his bookmakers license and fielded at Dapto for the first time and it wasn’t the perfect start losing $570 on the night. Grant learned a lot about figures and percentages from Jack Kooyman and had stands at Moss Vale, Bulli, Nowra, Wollongong and Harold Park for about five years. Grant said the days of the country split meetings at Moss Vale he held very big money, particularly in the morning maidens. “It was nothing for the eight bookmakers in the ring to hold more than $12,000 each.” Grant has also had stands at the Kembla Grange, Goulburn and Nowra gallops. Back in the thriving 60s and 70s when the sport was at its prime and a plunge was a plunge there were many smart operators around, punters in groups who knew when to bet. Grant went to school with Mark Craig who is the son of Harry, one of the big punters at the time. Grant and Mark were only young at the time

He has been right through Europe and Asia and while he has the sporting blood in his veins, wife Lexie has ‘Gold’ in her blood. Lexie’s cousin is Mark Kerry who won gold at the 1984 Olympics. Grant and Lexie were married in October 1975 after they met at Grant’s mothers hotel. “I was 20 at the time and Lexie came up and ordered a schooner and that was it, she won me over,” Grant recalls. They lived towns apart at the time, Grant was at Foster on the mid-north coast and Lexie came from Temora but like all good love stories destiny played its part. Lexie has been a huge part of the Hamilton bookmaking empire she pencils at all meetings and likes the occasional bet and as Grant tells, ‘normally with our winnings’. Life for Grant has not all been on one side of the leger as he obtained a trainers license in 1973 and teamed up with a mate he played football with to race his first dog. That dog was called Mystery Mover and it won 21 races and was purchased for $1,000 at 14 months old while his mate was on his honeymoon in Mudgee. Grant enjoyed training and had plenty of success with his dad, Ron (85) racing about 12 dogs during his time as a conditioner.

Most TAB tracks in NSW are now down to a single bagman or none Lexie on the other hand has her views on their future: “If Grant gives it away, I will get my own bookmakers license, I still love going to the races.” One thing is certain though ,Grant (61) and 64-year-old Lexie are still enjoying what they do, you can see that on race days or nights, it is in the blood and it is like retirement in paradise for them. Next step is ‘Bookmaker Heaven’ and the Hamilton odds to that is about 50/1 on to be at least a lifetime away.

Dave wins last ‘Pop Northfield’ on Casino grass The last running of the ‘Pop Northfield’ on grass was held last month at Casino and taken out by a Northfield bred dog Western Dave trained by Pat Lavis. Pat was lucky enough to have two runners in the race with, ‘Dave’ finishing on top in 23.25 seconds. An elated Pat celebrated with equally happy owners Dave Smith and Family. Dave reared two pups out west at Walgett - hence Western Dave - and when they were 12 months Dave moved across to the coast on retirement and contacted an old mate (Pat Lavis) and the rest is history. BRENNAN RYAN One of Tasmania’s most prestigious races was run and won back in mid-October, with the running of the $10,000 to-thewinner Minster’s Gift Final (452m).

The final was taken out by the Daniel’s Bay for Mangalore trainer Gary Fahey. It had been a big year for both Gary and his brother Greg, taking certain major races throughout the beginning of the year. It started with Rip And Tear in the Hobart Breeders Classic (26.41) and Soul Sister taking out the George & Eileen Johnson Puppy Championship at Devonport. The Minster’s Gift has been running since the start of the race back in 2001. The race is designed for Tasmanian-bred greyhounds with the grade class of 3, 4 or 5 Grade.

The three-week race series starts off back at Hobart, with five heats held over the 461m. The Neville Allison-trained Howzat Grace had claimed the fastest time of the heats in 26.06sec. The Karlene Cuthbertson owned/home bred chaser of Thirteen Black – Icy Popsicle had completed win number two of six career starts at the Elwick U-turn circuit. Other heat winners would include Amazing Harry (26.24), Bailey’s Comet (26.50), Kirkby Lodge (26.10) and Daniel’s Bay (26.07). NEWCASTLE breeder Allan Tindall just may be the most generous bloke in greyhound racing. He bred the super talented Over Limit and gave the pup to Victorian trainer Darren McDonald while keeping the rest of the litter himself. Over Limit is the up-and-coming boom greyhound sprinter in Victoria, having won 10 of his 12 starts. He’s clocked 29.66 seconds at The Meadows after smashing the Ballarat track record, running 24.77. The previous record of 24.87 was held by champion Black Magic Opal 29.87 and Over Limit’s other best times include 25.25 at Geelong and 25.15 at Shepparton. Tindall’s first greyhound was former group winner Nova Surf, which he said started a favourite in three group one finals. “She was just an exceptional race dog, winning the Warrnambool Cup and 23 from 45 started with 17 or 18 placings. She started a shortpriced favourite in those three group ones but unfortunately didn’t salute,” he said. “A mate reared Nova Surf, Neil Grey. She was

the first dog we had and when she was racing I never thought about breeding with her. We’re in it for the love of the dogs. We do what’s best for them.” Tindall said Nova Surf’s first litter was by Where’s Pedro, followed by Over Limit’s litter by Cosmic Chief. The third litter are about 10 months old by Magic Sprite and Nova Surf has now been mated to Collision. “Yes, we bred Over Limit and he goes all right. There was some good pups out of the first litter but Over Limit looks like being the best I’ve had anything to do with so far,” he said. “There’s a heap either racing around or not far

off getting to the track. Darren’s got a couple and young John Galea has a few.” Nova Surf’s first litter included winners Ripped Surf, Pedro’s Treasure, Pod’s Elect, Sharka Nova, Surf’s Up Nova and Viper Surf. The litter stars were There’s A Earn (25 starts for 11 wins, including a heat of the Healesville Cup beating Walk Hard, as well as wins in 29.40 at Sandown, 29.80 at The Meadows, 25.10 at Ballarat and 24.68 at Sale) and Where’s The Surf (15 wins including 29.70 at Wentworth Park, 29.50 at Traralgon and 30.14 at Cranbourne). The second litter includes Over Limit, Cosmic Tate (four starts, four wins), King Surfa (15

starts, eight wins and five seconds), Novacorum (nine starts, four wins) and Swagzilla (17 starts, eight wins and six placings including a win in a Geelong Cup heat in 25.58 over Azza Azza Azza). Tindall said McDonald had a huge opinion of the as yet unraced Surfin’ Scotsman which has had surgery to a stopper bone. “There was nine in the litter. I kept eight and I gave one to Darren - Over Limit. I’m really happy he’s got a fast one. I try and keep them all. Money doesn’t persuade me. I’m just enjoying the ride,” he said. “I want to keep a couple of bitches out of the litter. They’ll be my next brood bitches. It

Despite running second in her heat, Sweet It Is was sent to the boxes a $2.25 chance and favourite punters had their hearts in their mouths when the popular daughter of Mogambo drifted back to second last at the winning post the first time. With Zipping Maggie and Space Star ($4.00) duelling for the lead, Sweet It Is found trouble. Six lengths adrift after one lap, Sweet It Is weaved her way through the field before again being held up coming off the back straight. However once finding clear running room, Sweet It Is unleashed a finishing burst worthy of the race’s namesake, sweeping past Space Star to claim the $100,000 first prize by a rapidly expanding 5¾ lengths. Sweet It Is ran an eye catching sixth in the same race in 2013, however it wasn’t until the move to master trainer Darren McDonald’s kennel in March 2014 that saw her elevate herself to the upper echelon of history’s great stayers. In 20 starts in McDonald’s care, Sweet It Is is yet to miss a place, winning on nine occasions including four times at Group 1 level. Remarkably, in each of her Group 1 wins, Sweet It Is ran second in her heat before claiming the final. Following her victory, Sweet It Is improved her overall record to 15 wins from 47 starts and boosted her career prize money to $594,565 elevating her to sixth position all time. Bundy bookie dilemma PAUL DOLAN Bundaberg’s only bookmaker, Gary Hunt, has been unavailable for some racedays lately and no replacement fielder has been available.

Bundaberg races on Saturday afternoons and while there’s the TAB linked tote for punters to bet on the gallops races, there has been no betting on the greyhounds in Hunt’s absence. Hunt cannot guarantee continuity of attendance and tote facilities have been installed so punters can get a bet on the greyhounds every raceday. Obviously when Hunt is fielding, there will be the choice of tote or bookie.

Bundaberg G.R.C. vice president Henry Plunkett says installing a tote for the greyhound events will overcome what had been an embarrassing situation. “On Cox Plate day recently, for example, we had a group of about 40 people who came along for the day. While they were able to bet on our tote on the gallops, some of them wanted to have a punt on the greyhound races which they could watch but Gary wasn’t fielding,’’ Plunkett explained. “’Racing Queensland has told us that the tote on the local events will be for a three month’s trial. So it’s up to the punters to support it. As well as win and place betting, there will be quinella and trifecta available too, which obviously Gary doesn’t offer. So overall, punters should appreciate

what’s available.’’ Hunt has been appointed to field at each of the Gympie Turf Club’s race meetings. That club races eight times a year, on Saturdays. “I can’t find a replacement bookmaker at Bundaberg on the days that I go to Gympie. And Racing Queensland won’t allow me to use a proxy at Bundaberg,’’ Hunt said. “With Bundaberg’s yearly allocation cut from 45 to 37 meetings, there aren’t many days that I won’t be available because of Gympie racing. If RQ was to schedule the Bundaberg days off as Gympie race days, that would solve the problem. I could then field at every Bundaberg meeting.’’ “As for the tote, good luck to the club with that one. With small pools if someone has a decent bet the dividend will be next to nothing. They can bet

with me and know what they will collect if their dog wins.’’ Bundaberg last month staged Australia’s shortest race, the final of the Spring Sprint over 250 metres. Four heats were run, with the quickest winner being the Chris Gear trained Beware the Boss who speared out of box six, won by eleven lengths and ran 14.67. The track record is 14.54. In sharp contrast to that big winning margin in the heat, Beware the Boss won the final by a nose in 14.82 seconds from box five. Bundaberg’s Young Guns last month was won by the Adam McIntosh owned and trained Tru Ryder in 26.23. Originally the first reserve, Tru Ryder got the start from box six and made the most of the opportunity.

Rich win for Dyna Villa Dyna Villa etched his name into greyhound racing folklore with a brilliant win in the recent $600,00 Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park.

Unbeaten in three starts from box 8, Dyna Villa began brilliantly to cross the stellar field and lead through the first turn. As the rest of the pack settled Dyna Villa shot clear, opening a six-length break over his rivals down the back straight in what proved to be a race winning break, stopping the clock in a slick 29.36 seconds. Chica Destacada ($7.20) chased valiantly to reduce the margin to two lengths at the line, with favourite Keybow a further two lengths away in third. Despite qualifying for the final as the fastest heat winner, Dyna Villa opened a $4.40 chance after the box draw before being backed into a $3 second favourite by starting time. The win extended Dyna Villa’s remarkable unbeaten record at Sandown Park to eight starts and improved his overall record to 14 wins from just 22 starts. The $420,000 first prize took his career earnings to $466,635, a remarkable figure for a greyhound that has only just turned two years of age. After the placings the field finished in the following order 4th Above All ($5.70), 5th Cosmic Wise ($27.00), 6th Awesome Project ($14.10) 7th Star Recall ($13.90) and Luca Neveelk ($9.40). Dyna Villa is a Black dog whelped October 2012 by Collision from Roxio Bale (Droopys Vieri x Francesca Bale). Dyna Villa is raced Brendan Wheeler and trained by Jenny Hunt. He has raced 22 times for 14 wins and six placings. After adding the $420,000 first prize for the Melbourne Cup his stake earnings stand at $466,635.

in his first interstate trip, in winning a heat of the Group 1 Sportingbet Vic Peters at Wentworth Park in Sydney. Due to the bad box draw, Buckle Up Wes was knocked out of the semi-final when finishing fourth to Evil Punk. Wes then returned back here in Tasmania to attempt the oldest Group 1 race in Australia, the Group 1 Hobart Thousand (461m). Wes was beaten by the eventual final winner in Paw Licking, but was successful on the final night by taking out the Consolation in 25.87sec beating Black Rip. Again the terrific Tasmanian chaser then returned to Sydney to attempt the Group 1 Paws of Thunder at Wentworth Park by winning his heat in 29.65, but was beaten in the final by the Robert Britton-trained Iona Seven. Wes then returned to Tasmania once again to compete in the Group 2 Launceston Cup in February of this year. Wes was knocked out in the semi-final by Hellyeah Bolt, but he then went onto claim the consolation on cup night in an ultra-29.30 winning time. But now Buckle Up Wes begins his national stardom success, by claiming one of Australia’s

There was plenty of speculation surrounding the champ, due to the fact that he had not raced for eight weeks since being scratched from the grand final of the national sprint at Cannington. With the confidence of trainer Edward Medhurst, Wes was set to take battle against some of Australia’s best sprinters. The greyhound had suffered a tendon injury after taking out the 2014 National Sprint State Final at Launceston. Drawing box five in the historic classic, Buckle Up Wes had begun brilliantly to lead from go to whoa, to take out the feature in 30.02 well outside of his personal best of 29.74. Who knows where Buckle Up Wes’s career will now take him but the $460,000 TAB Melbourne Cup is to be well considered. Such greyhounds as Dilston Prince, Wynlee Wonder, Highland Summer, Chinatown Lad and Bell Haven are considered as top dogs but Buckle Up Wes deserves to become a living legend. That had definitely brought joy and pride to owners Robyn and Gary Johnson and Sharon Sutton, along with trainer Edward Medhurst. Both Buckle Up Wes and Medhurst then continued on the feature race trail, by competing in the time honoured NSW classic, the Group 1 Macro Meats Golden Easter Egg again at Wentworth Park. The son of Collision had been a strong force through-out the series. Wes was unfortunate to finish a strong third to Tonk in the grand final of the Golden Easter Egg. The Tasmanian star had then ventured later of this year to QLD to compete in the Group 1 Winter Carnival Cup at Albion Park but was just a few strides short to be beaten by Flash Reality in the final. Firstly with the harness racing with the magnificent Beautide claiming the $750,000 Inter Dominion Final early in the year. Then along comes the lion of Longford - THE CLEANER! Even though he did not claim the W.S Cox Plate he still won not only the hearts of the public, but also claiming the time honoured Group 3 JRA Cup at Moonee Valley back in mid-October. What will still stand in our minds for quite some time is one particular greyhound who has given 55-year-old Mangalore trainer Edward Medhurst the biggest thrill in his career to date the greyhound who goes by the name of Buckle Up Wes. Now this greyhound starts off like any other greyhound, being whelped and reared on a farm by two of Tasmania’s well respected icons Robyn and Gary Johnson. Now the Johnsons have been in the sport here in Tasmania for quite some time. Most of their greyhounds that are raced, whelped and trained by the Husband and Wife team go under the prefix of Buckle Up, with their farm being called Buckle Up Lodge located at Leith just ten minutes south of Devonport. Going by my history so far I have seen the Johnsons having star performers such as Buckle Up Tina, Li Li, Mr Issues, Senor Slamma, Punk Tastic and many others I’m sure. But it’s all about Buckle Up Wes, who is a result whelping of the Collision – Everlong Bale litter. The June 2011 whelping saw a litter of 9 Pups (4 dogs, 5 bitches), which the litter included Buckle Up Wes, Buckle Up Mason, Buckle Up Andy, Buckle Up Caza, Buckle Up Glenys, Buckle Up Oink, Buckle Up Olitz, Buckle Up Vurlie and Buckle Up Zimil. When it came to braking in stage, both Robyn and Gary started to notice that Wes was starting to show some strong abilities. With that in mind, the Johnsons then approached Mangalore’s Edward Medhurst to train the greyhound and the rest becomes history! Buckle Up Wes had begun what was to become a brilliant career back in May 2013, when finishing sixth to Action Bolt in 26.20sec. Then the pin had begun to drop and Wes brakes through to his first win at Devonport on 28th of June 2013, beating Hellyeah Missile by five and a quarter lengths in 25.50sec. The Medhurst trained greyhound continued on with a three-win streak, claiming the 2013 Tasmanian Derby Final at Launceston in a quick time of 29.90. Looking through Buckle Up Wes’s racing career, you can see that he competed in 2013 state series of the AGRA National Sprint but had finished second to She’s All Class for David Crosswell in the final.
