BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL NEW SIRES FOR 2022

F

UNNY thing about the 2022 intake of new sires. In thinking about who would grace the front page of our supplement, while St Mark’s Basilica was straight away in the mind, not that many more were. But just a few minutes of further thought later, it was difficult to know who to leave out. In short, they look a strong bunch. Aside from the aforementioned Coolmore stunner, there is Palace Pier, one of the best milers we have seen in recent years, Breeders’ Cup winner Space Blues, July Cup hero Starman and Phoenix Stakes winner and 2,000 Guineas third Lucky Vega. There are several more of note too, including In Swoop and Logician, who it is to be hoped will receive some patronage from Flat mare owners. In what is our first supplement of 2022, Kitty Trice takes you on a spin through the new boys in Britain and Ireland, while we also cover the scene in mainland Europe. Victor Ludorum, a Group 1 winner at two and Classic hero at three, stands out among the new recruits in France. Talking of France, and back to St Mark’s Basilica, who annexed both the Poule d’Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey Club last year, there was inevitably much written and said after trainer Aidan O’Brien’s exceedingly high praise for the colt. Did he deserve all his accolades? Your view is as valid as mine, but what the record shows is that he retires after an unbeaten four-race 2021, in which he also won the Coral-Eclipse really well and Irish Champion Stakes not quite so well. There would have been worse stewards’ decisions had they stripped him of the Leopardstown showpiece, but given he might have been feeling the effects of a leg injury there but still passed the post in front, it would be harsh to knock the performance. He starts his second career at a lofty €65,000. Whatever your level, best of luck to all connected with this year’s bunch of new boys, and to the mare owners set to frequent them. Fresh talent from A’Ali to Ubettabelieveit via Logician and crack miler Palace Pier

Dee Ex Bee: recruited to the National Hunt stallion ranks in Ireland

A’Ali

Bangkok

Boscaccio

Age: 5 Colour: brown Pedigree: Society Rock - Motion Lass (Motivator) Standing at Newsells Park Stud Price: £7,500 Racing Post Rating high of 113 A multiple Group-winning son of Tally-Ho Stud’s late sire Society Rock, A’Ali has plenty to offer breeders based on both his performances and pedigree. Off the mark on just his second start when winning the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot for Simon Crisford, A’Ali for good measure went on to add the Prix Robert Papin and Flying Childers Stakes to his name, also Groups 2s. The five-year-old was not just a precocious two-year-old talent either, adding two more Group wins in the Coral Charge and Sapphire Stakes to his CV at three, before his career was cut short by injury after a promising third in the Meydan Sprint last February. The Tally-Ho bred A’Ali is out of the Motivator mare Motion Lass, who was placed over a mile and is a half-sister to the Group-winning Coronation Cup third Enforcer, so there is a hint of stamina to go with the precocity and pace of her son.

6 b Australia - Tanaghum (Darshaan) Chapel Stud: £3,000 RPR 118 The Barronstown Stud-bred son of Australia looks a shrewd recruit to the Chapel Stud stallion ranks, having been a consistent and talented performer for King Power Racing from an excellent Shadwell family. A 500,000gns purchase by SackvilleDonald from Tattersalls Book 1, Bangkok ran in classy company in three starts at two before shelving his maiden tag on his first start at three, getting the better of subsequent Dante Stakes victor Telecaster at Doncaster. A win in Sandown’s Group 3 Classic Trial over Technician saw him take his place in the Derby, but despite starting a well-fancied 9-1 shot he was not at his best at Epsom, being unsuited by the undulations, and trailed home in 12th behind Anthony Van Dyck. He bounced back to be second to Japan in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, and later finished a close second to Zaaki in the Strensall Stakes at York. Bangkok was to go on and win the Listed Winter Derby Trial at Lingfield on the allweather in successive years, while the penultimate start of his career saw him land the Group 2 York Stakes in gritty fashion. Advertised as a dualpurpose sire, Bangkok is the 11th foal out of the stakes-placed Darshaan mare Tanaghum and is a half-brother to UAE Group 1 winner Matterhorn, the Group-winning Tactic, and Mujarah, the dam of Ribchester.

9 b Mount Nelson Bianca De Medici (Medicean) Knockhouse Stud: Private RPR 105 A Group 2-winning son of notable jumps influence Mount Nelson, who has been responsible for Stayers’ Hurdle hero Penhill and likeable sorts such as Get In The Queue and Havingagoodtime, Boscaccio looks an interesting recruit for the County Kilkenny-based Knockhouse Stud. Bred by Gestut Fahrhof, the nine-year-old is out of the winning Medicean mare Bianca De Medici, who hails from the family of dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine Treve. Boscaccio was a high-class performer himself, winning on his sole two-year-old start for Christian Sprengel in Germany before landing Listed and Group 2 contests the following year. Also a winner at four, Boscaccio was sent off favourite for the German Derby won by Isfahan but suffered an injury during the race.

Bangkok: consistent and talented performer on the track

Century Dream 8 b Cape Cross - Salacia (Echo Of Light) Norton Grove Stud: £3,000 RPR 119 Century Dream seems to have been around for even longer than he actually has. After six seasons in training with the Crisfords, he is another tough and talented recruit to the stallion ranks for 2022. The son of Cape Cross is out of the winning Echo Of Light mare Salacia, making him a half-brother to Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner and Derrinstown Stud sire King Of Change, as well as two other winners. The now eight-year-old was a winner at two and graduated

through the handicap ranks to win at Group and Listed level at four, before finishing that season with a fine third behind Roaring Lion in the QEII, beaten just three-quarters of a length. A dual winner of the Diomed Stakes, Century Dream’s career highlight came when landing the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood. He was placed a further six times in black-type races and won ten times in all. A well-related and durable performer, Century Dream looks a canny addition to Norton Grove Stud’s roster.

Dee Ex Bee 7 br Farhh - Dubai Sunrise (Seeking The Gold) Arctic Tack Stud: €3,500 RPR 121 A high-class performer who was unlucky to bump into Stradivarius, De Ex Bee is a fascinating recruit to the Irish National Hunt ranks. By a proven top-class sire in Farhh, the Godolphin-bred has a wonderful pedigree, being out of an unraced sister to the outstanding Dubai Millennium who was out of a French Group 2 winner in Colorado Dancer. A dual winner and second to Kew Gardens in the Zetland Stakes at two, Dee Ex Bee was placed several times at the top level, most notably when runner-up to Masar in the Derby. He was also third to Kew Gardens in the Grand Prix de Paris. At four he won the Sagaro and Henry II Stakes – both

Group 3s – before brave seconds to Stradivarius in the Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup (beaten a neck) and Lonsdale Cup. He was then third in the Prix du Cadran, and eventually retired with seven wins to his credit.

Eagles By Day 6 br Sea The Stars - Missunited (Golan) Glenview Stud: Private RPR 113 The Vanessa Hutch-bred son of Sea The Stars is the latest recruit to Glenview Stud, with the high-class stayer boasting a pedigree ripe for National Hunt covering duties. The six-year-old was second on his sole outing at two and shelved his maiden tag on his second start the following season, when the highlight was a fine third behind Japan in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. Having been switched to David O’Meara from Michael Bell’s yard, Eagles By Day won the Group 3 Silver Cup Stakes at York and was also fourth to Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup. He wound up his career at Ascot last October when, not for the first time, outrunning his odds to be runner-up to Hukum in the Cumberland Lodge. Eagles By Day is the first foal out of Missunited, a versatile, popular and talented daughter of Golan whose prolific CV included strikes in the Lillie Langtry Stakes and Galway Hurdle and a close second to Leading Light in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

Fifty Stars 7 b Sea The Stars - Swizzle Stick (Sadler’s Wells) Sunnyhill Stud: €3,000 RPR 114 A hardy performer down under for Darren Weir, and then variously David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Fifty Stars is a fascinating new recruit to National Hunt breeders on account of his pedigree as much as his performances. The winner of the Group 1 Australian Cup, along with a trio of Group 2s and a Group 3, Fifty Stars put up high-class efforts from three to six, the most recent of which came when runner-up to Zaaki at the Gold Coast last May, while he is a half-brother to Grade 1 Future Champions Novice Hurdle winner Whiskey Sour among two winning half-siblings. Standing for €3,000 and by a sire who is making his influence felt in the National Hunt sphere through sons Crystal Ocean and Affinisea, Fifty Stars has plenty going for him.

In Swoop 5 b Adlerflug - Iota (Tiger Hill) Beeches Stud: €4,500 RPR 122 A son of Germany’s late great sire Adlerflug and a fullbrother to German Group 1 winner Ito, In Swoop stands out among the newest batch of

recruits to the stallion ranks. Unraced at two, the now five-year-old swooped on his third start to beat Torquator Tasso in the German Derby, the form of which does not look too shabby now, before going on to two second places in the Grand Prix de Paris and then to Sottsass in the Arc. In Swoop returned at four last year to win the Group 3 Prix d’Hedouville and Group 2 Grand Prix de Chantilly. He was retired after sustaining an injury when fourth behind Broome in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, and many expected him to stand in Germany. However, he has joined Coolmore’s National Hunt roster at the Beeches Stud instead.

Century Dream: tough and accomplished recruit to the stallion ranks for 2022

Khalifa Sat 5 b Free Eagle - Thermopylae (Tenby) Lacken Stud: €2,000 RPR 112 The first son of Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner and Irish National Stud resident Free Eagle to go to stud, Khalifa Sat’s finest effort in a short but sweet career came when finishing second to allthe-way winner Serpentine in the 2020 Derby. He had struck in the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood before that. He is out of the Tenby mare Thermopylae and is therefore Continues page 4

a close relation to Unsung Heroine, a Group 3 winner and runner-up to Conduit in the St Leger. Further back in the page is the Group 1 Gran Premio d’Italia scorer Posidonas, who also won a couple of Group 2s and a Group 3.

Logician 6 gr Frankel - Scuffle (Daylami) Shade Oak Stud: £4,000 RPR 121 By newly crowned champion sire Frankel and hailing from a typically in-depth Juddmonte family, Logician cuts an impressive figure among the 2022 new stallion ranks. Another unraced at two, Logician made up for lost time when going unbeaten in five races at three, including the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes and St Leger at Doncaster, in which he was highly impressive in justifying favouritism by two and a quarter lengths. Connections opted not to go for the Arc, a decision they might have come to privately regret after Logician suffered a bout of peritonitis that nearly cut short his life, let alone his career, following his threeyear-old campaign. He did return to the track at four and five but was unable to recapture the sparkle of that Classic year. He is out of Scuffle, a winning half-sister to Group 1 winner Cityscape and Banstead Manor Stud sire Bated Breath, and is therefore a full-brother to Listed winner Collide.

Lope Y Fernandez 5 b Lope De Vega - Black Dahlia (Dansili) National Stud: £8,500 RPR 118 Lope Y Fernandez joins a young but burgeoning National Stud roster as an intriguing individual in his own right. He struck at Group 3 and Listed level for Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore partners, as well as placing in numerous top-level contests, including when third behind Siskin in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and runner-up to Palace Pier in last year’s Queen Anne. He was also beaten just a length behind stablemates Order Of Australia and Circus Maximus in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. A Lope De Vega half-brother to Vintage Stakes victor Dark Vision and out of a Listedplaced Dansili mare, the fiveyear-old looks an attractive commercial prospect at an opening fee of £8,500.

Lucky Vega 4 b Lope De Vega - Queen Of Carthage (Cape Cross) Irish National Stud: €15,000 RPR 118 A top-class juvenile who trained on to place in the 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes at three, Lucky Vega will undoubtedly receive plenty of interest in his first season at stud, and he is assured of strong support from Yuesheng Zhang, whose colours he

‘Logician cuts an impressive figure among the 2022 new stallion ranks’ carried so successfully on the racecourse. The son of Lope De Vega and the unraced Cape Cross mare Queen Of Carthage cost a six-figure sum from Goffs as both a foal and yearling at the November and Orby Sales, and his talent was there for all to

see when winning on his debut at Naas for Jessica Harrington. He was second in the Railway Stakes before a clearcut win in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. Unlucky in the National Stakes, he bounced back to be a half-length second to Supremacy in the Middle Park.

He was restricted to three runs at three but he proved at least as good as ever when producing a career-best RPR when a half-length third to Poetic Flare at Newmarket. His career came to a close after Royal Ascot owing to shuttling duties in Australia.

Mildenberger 7 b Teofilo - Belle Josephine (Dubawi) Groomsbridge Stud: £1,500 RPR 114 A typically tenacious and gritty performer for Mark Johnston, Mildenberger joins Universal

in a dual-purpose capacity at Groomsbridge Stud after a 24race career that resulted in seven wins. Mildenberger won three of his five starts at two, including the Listed Stonehenge Stakes, and in his other two runs was Continues page 7

NEW to British Breeders for 2022 “The relaunch of Dream Ahead in the British market in 2022 following five years in Ireland and four seasons in Normandy is interesting, especially as his new custodians Bearstone Stud are pitching him at just £7,500. That’s a very fair price for a proven sire whose CV includes Group 1 winners Al Wukair, Donjuan Triumphant, Dream Of Dreams and Glass Slippers, and whose stock still commands plenty of respect in the marketplace.” Martin Stevens, Racing Post 4th January 2022 Enquiries: Bearstone Stud Office: 01630 647197 See our 2022 brochure online at www.bearstonestud.co.uk

third to Expert Eye in the Vintage Stakes and then to Roaring Lion in the Royal Lodge. Winner of the Listed Feilden Stakes on his first start at three, he was then second to Roaring Lion in the Dante but was then sidelined for the best part of a year. He subsequently managed to place another three times in Group company and annexed a trio of conditions races on the all-weather. The Godolphin homebred is out of a winning half-sister to Listed scorer Marsh Daisy and the Group-placed winner Yankee Doodle and from the family of Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner and Eclipse second Stagecraft.

Mirage Dancer 8 br Frankel - Heat Haze (Green Desert) Castlefield Stud: €3,500 RPR 119 Mirage Dancer has to be considered one of the bestbred individuals to enter stud duty in 2022. From the first crop of the new champion sire Frankel, he is the fifth living foal out of Heat Haze, a Grade 1-winning half-sister to Dansili, Banks Hill, Cacique, Champs Elysees and Intercontinental, and a daughter of Juddmonte’s mighty blue hen Hasili. Mirage Dancer won his only start at two for Sir Michael Stoute, with Group placings at three being supplemented by wins in the Group 3 Glorious Stakes and Listed Tapster Stakes at four. After his five-year-old season, the highlight of which was another victory in the Tapster, he was sold to Australia. There, he raced for Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, winning the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap and finishing third in the Caulfield Cup. He returns to the northern hemisphere as the sole son of Frankel standing in Ireland and, with an outstanding

family, looks an intriguing recruit for Castlefield.

Nando Parrado 4 b Kodiac - Chibola (Roy) Irish National Stud: €6,000 RPR 111 Sire sons of Kodiac are all the rage after the exploits of Ardad and Kodi Bear recently, and the Irish National Stud has acquired the services of the Group 2 Coventry Stakes winner Nando Parrado. He backed up that shock victory with a fine second to Campanelle in the Prix Morny and was subsequently runnerup to Sealiway in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. He was unable to grace the winner’s enclosure last year, however, despite two or three fair efforts. Out of an Argentinian Group winner in Chibola, a sister to Argentinian juvenile top-level winner Chollo, the four-yearold is a half-brother to three winners including the Listedplaced Muntadab and Nad Al Sheba Trophy third Dubai Horizon.

Palace Pier 5 b Kingman - Beach Frolic (Nayef) Dalham Hall Stud: £55,000 RPR 127 The best son of the allconquering Kingman, Palace Pier should prove an extremely popular addition to Darley’s ranks at Dalham Hall. A 600,000gns purchase from Highclere as a yearling at Book 1, he won his two starts as a juvenile in decisive fashion before stepping up from his handicap win at Newcastle to defeat Pinatubo in the St James’s Palace Stakes with a potent turn of foot. His first win in the Prix Jacques le Marois followed, while he ran creditably having lost a shoe when third in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Palace Pier was no less dominant at four, notching up wins in the bet365 Mile, Lockinge, Queen Anne and

Prix Jacques le Marois – where he got the better of Poetic Flare in an exciting finish – before going down by just a neck to the unbeaten Baaeed in the QEII. Out of the Nayef mare Beach Frolic, who was sold to Coolmore for 2,200,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2020, the fiveyear-old hails from the family of Group 2 winners Bonfire and Joviality.

Rich History 8 ch Dubawi - Polished Gem (Danehill) Kedrah House Stud: €3,500 RPR 77 A Moyglare Stud-bred son of Dubawi and outstanding producer Polished Gem, Rich History holds one of the finest pedigrees in the stud book. The eight-year-old is a halfbrother to two Group 1 winners in Prince of Wales’s Stakes scorer Free Eagle and dual Irish St Leger heroine Search For A Song, as well as the multiple Group-winning Custom Cut, the Group 2-winning Sapphire and stakes winners Falcon Eight and Amma Grace. Rich History may not have the race record to match his illustrious siblings, but he did win twice in the Middle East and was placed 11 times, and his page alone makes him an interesting new recruit to the stallion ranks.

Roseman 6 b Kingman - Go Lovely Rose (Pivotal) March Hare Stud: £5,500 RPR 122 Roseman is the latest stallion to stand at LM Stallions’ March Hare Farm, where he will join the likes of 2,000 Guineas runner-up Tip Two Win and American Grade 3 winner Legends Of War. Another son of Kingman, Roseman was a 180,000gns purchase by Mick Flanagan as a foal from Tattersalls before selling to Roger Varian for

€650,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale. He is the fifth foal out of Go Lovely Rose, a winning fullsister to multiple top-level winning miler Immortal Verse, herself the dam of last year’s Cheveley Park winner Tenebrism. Roseman was a Listed winner on the track, seeing off Century Dream by four and a half lengths at the backend of his three-year-old career in the Ben Marshall Stakes at Newmarket. He was tried exclusively at Group 1 level as a four-yearold, doing best when beaten just a head by The Revenant in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, with Palace Pier third, on what proved to be his final start.

Santiago 5 b Authorized - Wadyhatta (Cape Cross) Castle Hyde Stud: €4,500 RPR 117 By Authorized, whose presence in the National Hunt sphere is most keenly felt through the likes of dual Grand National hero Tiger Roll and Stayers’ Hurdle winner Nichols Canyon, Santiago rates a particularly eyecatching recruit to Coolmore’s jumps roster. The five-year-old was a topclass performer, his career

highlight coming with his victory in the Irish Derby, while only the previous week he had been a convincing winner of the Group 2 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot. He followed his Classic triumph with a third to Stradivarius, stepped back up in trip, in the Goodwood Cup and closed the campaign with a fair fourth, beaten only a length and a half, behind Galileo Chrome in the St Leger. He ran four times last year, doing best when runner-up to Spanish Missin in the Yorkshire Cup. Bred by Lynch Bages, Santiago hails from an excellent family. He is the first foal out of the winning Cape Cross mare Wadyhatta, a halfsister to French Derby third Motamarris and in turn out of a winning half-sister to Group 1 winner and Derrinstown sire Tamayuz. Further back in the page is none other than Urban Sea.

Space Blues 6 ch Dubawi - Miss Lucifer (Noverre) Kildangan Stud: €17,500 RPR 123 The fastest son of Dubawi to retire to stud, Space Blues proved a top-class performer over four seasons for Charlie Appleby.

His career got off to a bright start with victory on his only run at two, and he improved as his three-year-old season wore on, winning the Listed Surrey Stakes and finishing second to Too Darn Hot and third to Advertise in Deauville Group 1s. That progressive side surfaced again in 2020, when he was unbeaten in four starts in Europe, going from Listed to Group 3 to Group 2 to the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. He ended last year on a hot streak, with victories in the Group 2 City of York Stakes and then two more strikes at the top table in the Prix de la Foret and Breeders’ Cup Mile on what was his first crack at the trip since his three-yearold days. The six-year-old is out of the Group 2-winning Noverre mare Miss Lucifer and is therefore a half-brother to three winners including Shuruq, a four-time Group winner and dam of the Grade 3-winning Belmont Oaks runner-up Antoinette. As a pacey type by a sire whose stallion sons have exploded on to the world stage in recent years, Space Blues holds obvious appeal for breeders. Continues page 8

Starman 5 b Dutch Art - Northern Star (Montjeu) Tally-Ho Stud: €17,500 RPR 124 Unraced at two, Starman rose quickly to prominence in 2020 when winning his first three starts, including the Listed Garrowby Stakes, for ownerbreeder David Ward and trainer Ed Walker. He was unable to cut any ice on his first crack at a Group 1 at a soft-ground Champions Day but returned at four with a cosy success in the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes. Then, following a late withdrawal from the Diamond Jubilee Stakes on account of the ground, came his moment in the sun as he overcame traffic problems

to pull clear and win the July Cup by a length and a quarter from Dragon Symbol. Soft ground wouldn’t have helped his cause when subsequently third behind Marianafoot in the Prix Maurice de Gheest, while the curtain ultimately came down with an agonising short-head second in the Sprint Cup at Haydock. Injury prevented an appearance in the Champions Sprint and hastened his St Mark’s Basilica: hugely important stallion prospect

retirement to Tally-Ho. The five-year-old is the second foal out of the winning Montjeu mare Northern Star – a half-sister to Grade 2 winner and Arkansas Derby runner-up King Guillermo – and is a halfsibling to the Group 3-placed Sunday Star.

St Mark’s Basilica 4 b Siyouni - Cabaret (Galileo) Coolmore Stud: €65,000 RPR 128 The most expensive new sire in Europe for 2022, St Mark’s Basilica’s credentials are there for all to see being a champion two-year-old, an unbeaten dual Classic winner at three and a half-brother to another Classic winner in Magna Grecia, now his Coolmore studmate. Magnier from Tattersalls Book 1 and in hindsight that looks an outstanding piece of business despite the sevenfigure sum involved. Winner of the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at two having also finished third in the National Stakes, the colt went through his Classic campaign with ease, landing the French 2,000 Guineas and Derby without a qualm before sauntering to Coral-Eclipse success, eclipsing two top-class rivals in Addeybb and Mishriff. He missed the Juddmonte International through a slight niggle but provided one more example of his prodigious talent when winning the Irish Champion Stakes, with Tarnawa and Poetic Flare in behind. While his trainer Aidan O’Brien could not be categoric, he felt that the issue which had kept the colt out of York – a front shoe having come off and hit his hind leg while working – might still have been bothering St Mark’s Basilica at Leopardstown, where he hung to his right in the home straight and carried Tarnawa with him in winning by threequarters of a length. A stewards’ inquiry followed and it may have been a close shave that he kept the race. Subsequently retired and described by O’Brien as

“possibly the best horse we’ve ever had” – sky-high praise given all the greats that have been through Ballydoyle – St Mark’s Basilica retires as one of Coolmore’s most important stallion prospects in years.

Supremacy 4 b Mehmas - Triggers Broom (Arcano) Yeomanstown Stud: €12,500 RPR 118 A son of the red-hot Mehmas, whose fee has doubled at Tally-Ho Stud for 2022 to €50,000, Supremacy joins a team that also knows all about launching stallion careers of precocious juveniles. The four-year-old Supremacy, who starts off at a reasonable-looking €12,500 at Yeomanstown, shelved his maiden tag on his second start at two before running out a four-length winner of the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. He then cemented his status as a top-class two-year-old with success over Lucky Vega in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes, in the process getting the nod for a Bloodstock Review profile over fellow juvenile hotpot St Mark’s Basilica, who was rated just 1lb superior. Unfortunately, 2021 just didn’t go Supremacy’s way as he was unable to get anywhere near the heights

of his two-year-old season. Supremacy is the third foal out of the Arcana mare Triggers Broom, a half-sister to dual Group 1 Champions Mile and Vintage Stakes winner Xtension and to the dam of top-class sprinter Harry Angel.

Ubettabelieveit 4 b Kodiac - Ladylishandra (Mujadil) Mickley Stud: £5,000 RPR 108 Ubettabelieveit is another son of the great Kodiac being prepared to stand his first season at stud in 2022. Bred by Ringfort Stud, the four-year-old is a half-brother to three black-type winners including dual Group 3 winner Tropical Paradise and the Group-placed Shenanigans. A speedy two-year-old, Ubettabelieveit won Sandown’s Listed National Stakes and Doncaster’s Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes, before finishing a fine third to Golden Pal in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. His three-year-old career did not scale the same peaks last year, but he nonetheless left owner Martin Webb and trainer Nigel Tinkler and his team with some great memories, and he retires as a son of a proven sire of sires and from a family with plenty of speed.

BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL NEW SIRES FOR 2022 Norton Grove Stud owner Richard Lingwood speaks to Kitty Trice about his North Yorkshire operation

T

HE addition of the wellrelated new sire Century Dream is another big reason for the Norton Grove Stud team to have a spring in their step. Their 2022 roster has also been boosted by the arrival of high-class stayer Marmelo, and the two recent recruits will stand alongside the blueblooded Sogann, Forever Now, the stakes-winning son of Galileo, and the reliable Pearl Secret. “It was all a bit difficult last year due to Covid but hopefully things are relaxing now,” says stud owner Richard Lingwood, “With this bunch of stallions, we can look forward – it’s certainly keeping us busy.” The North Yorkshire stud’s new sire of 2022 Century Dream has a racing record that in itself must be an attraction to breeders near and far. Having raced from two to seven, Century Dream posted victories in the Celebration Mile and Diomed Stakes (twice), and was placed third in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes as he compiled an impressive record of ten successes from 35 starts in the silks of Abdulla Belhabb, for the Simon Crisford yard. Lingwood says: “His breeding is a big attraction, being by Cape Cross, and he was a tough miler. He was never far away in his races and never ran a bad race. He won a Group 2 and two Group 3s, which you’d hope would be another plus for our customers.” The attractive bay is, notably, a half-brother to the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner and Derrinstown Stud resident King Of Change, who was also runner-up to Magna Grecia in the 2,000 Guineas. It appears to be a transaction that could amount to a real coup for northern breeding and racing. Explaining how the stud got hold of the eight-year-old, who is out of Echo Of Light’s daughter Salacia, Lingwood says: “We had talked to Richard Knight about doing the deal for Century Dream after getting Sogann two or three years ago. “Connections then decided Century Dream would spend another year in training, so we thought it had dropped through. That was until late last year when they rang up out of the blue and asked if we were still interested in him.” He continues: “We’ve had him about two months straight from training, and he’s a very sensible horse to deal with. We’ve yet to see how he covers mares of course but we’ve teased a mare with him to do all the necessary swabs and it looks as though he knows how to handle himself!” Lingwood also reports that Century Dream has attracted plenty of interest ahead of his first covering season, when he will stand for £3,000. He says: “When the news was announced we had lots of reaction and quite a few of our customers are sending mares to him. We had a message from Richard Hannon’s office this morning saying that they’ll be sending one to him. Hopefully he should be getting some nice animals by the sound of things.” Century Dream is not the only fresh recruit to Norton Grove, although the high-class stayer Marmelo is not a

new sire per se having spent time at Haras du Grand Courgeon before returning to Britain. The son of the late Duke Of Marmalade also has a race record to match his imposing looks, winning the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay twice and finishing second in the Melbourne Cup behind Cross Counter. He accumulated six stakes successes from seven wins overall for the Hughie Morrison yard, from 22 starts. Lingwood says of the Deepwood Farm-bred nine-year-old: “He’s a grand horse and a fine-looking animal. He acts like a gelding, you can’t believe he’s a stallion as he’s that laid-back. Mind you, when he sees a mare he gets the right idea!” Marmelo, who will stand the 2022 covering season at £2,000, is set to receive mostly National Hunt mares, with Lingwood saying he is a welcome jump-sire prospect for the north. “We haven’t got a good National Hunt stallion up here and, looks-wise, I think he’s an ideal prospect,” he says. “He was a really good racehorse, winning Group 2s and finishing second in the Melbourne Cup. If he was a sprinter we’d expect him to be getting a nice, full book. Everything is longer term for National Hunt breeding, but we’ve had interest in him so fingers crossed.”

W

The old and the new (clockwise from top left): Pearl Secret and Forever Now have been joined at Norton Grove Stud in North Yorkshire – pictured as the sun comes up on a frosty morning (main) – by Century Dream and Marmelo

HILE Sogann has been settled into stud life since being retired unraced for the 2020 breeding season, there is obviously still anticipation about his first crop of yearlings this term. The son of Frankel is a half-brother to Prix Morny and Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner, and now successful Haras de Grandcamp stallion, Dabirsim. Lingwood says: “Everybody we’ve spoken to over the last six months has been over the moon with their foals. A couple of owners have said they are going to send the mares back again because they’re so pleased. “The first foal that was sold in Ireland last year made €34,000, which was a great start for him, and if Sogann can carry on as his father has been doing we’d be delighted! He’s a grand stamp and we’ve got three yearlings by him and they’re very good to handle and a decent size.” The five-strong roster is completed by Pearl Secret, a Temple Stakeswinning son of Compton Place, and Forever Now, a stakes-winning and Group-placed son of the late Galileo who has his first three-year-olds this term. Lingwood says of Forever Now: “I suppose we could say it’s disappointing that he covered mid30s in his first two seasons here, and then because of the situation with the virus he had less in the book. Again, people are saying nice things about his offspring. Hopefully there will be a few runners and winners to help him along this year.” All told, the future looks very bright for Norton Grove, albeit it will have to soldier on without the services of stalwart Pastoral Pursuits, the winner of the July Cup and sire of classy performers Ventura Rebel and Pastoral Player. He died last February at the age of 20 after covering a mare and subsequently rupturing a major vessel in his chest. Lingwood adds: “It was a big shock to lose him like that. The one mare he covered last season is in foal, so I hope it’s a world beater.”

REST OF EUROPE WITH so many of France’s keynote prizes captured by runners from overseas, the intake for this year does not have quite the profile that has been the case in times gone by. Priced highest of any newcomer outside Britain and Ireland is Victor Ludorum (€15,000), who heads to become the top boy at Darley’s Normandy station, Haras du Logis. The first stage of his career panned out along very similar lines to his sire Shamardal, being a Group 1 winner as a juvenile before emulating his father in landing the Poule d’Essai des Poulains. It was no disgrace to finish third to Mishriff in the Prix du Jockey Club and this sibling of the useful Ancient History and Mary Tudor was a winner and Group 1-placed again at four. Inbred 3x3 to Street Cry’s dam Helen Street, he should invite plenty of interest from home and abroad. The career of Armor (€5,000) was short but sweet, lasting only a season, in which he won the Molecomb and placed in the Middle Park before heading into retirement and on to Haras de Bouquetot. The Al Shaqab operation, which did the same thing with Mehmas, will be optimistic that he can produce plenty of fast ones down the line, just as his sire No Nay Never has. Soft Light (Haras de

Colleville, €5,000), a son of Authorized who was a consistent middle-distance performer, and the Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Mkfancy (Haras de Saint Arnoult, €4,000) are a couple more who should impart a stamina influence. A pair of good Britishtrained runners also cross the Channel to begin their new vocations. Mastercraftsman’s Prix Royal-Oak winner Technician has been found a great home at Haras de Montaigu, where he is introduced at €3,000, while Knight To Behold, successful in a Deauville Group 2 for Harry Dunlop, is offered a chance at €1,800 by Haras de Talma. German bloodstock’s reputation reached another high with Torquator Tasso’s Arc triumph and there are a few new arrivals to refresh a scene which has lost that

horses’s sire Adlerflug and has some ageing names towards the top of the tree. Gestut Etzean, which lost its leading light Lord Of England, wanted an international angle to the business and found exactly that by collaborating with other German breeders to entice Japan (€11,000), the illustriously bred son of Galileo who won the Juddmonte International and Grand Prix de Paris in a busy career for Aidan O’Brien. One from a mould far more associated with German bloodlines is Windstoss (€4,000), the son of Shirocco who won two Group 1s including his domestic Derby. A half-brother to 2018 German Derby hero Weltstar, he returns to his breeders Gestut Rottgen. Areion’s son Alson (Gestut Fahrhof, €6,000), from a fine Gestut Schlenderhan family, was second to Victor Ludorum in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere before following up in the Group 1 Criterium International. THE BIG HORSE WITH A REGAL PEDIGREE FROM THE FAMOUS MOYGLARE FAMILY

NEW FOR 2022 ON THE MOVE TO OR WITHIN BRITAIN AND IRELAND DREAM AHEAD’S arrival at Bearstone in Shropshire for this season seems a bit of a coup. The stud’s owners, Terry and Margaret Holdcroft, are firm fans of the sire, who is responsible for their flagbearing three-time Group 1 winner Glass Slippers, who has now been retired for a broodmare career, as well as the admirable sprinter Dream Of Dreams and top milerturned-stallion Al Wukair. An outstanding five-time Group 1 star on the track himself, Dream Ahead is an outcross for much of the equine population, as a son of Diktat from the Godolphin Arabian line, and is priced competitively at £7,500, the lowest fee in his decade as a stallion. Andrew Spalding’s Hedgeholme Stud was on the lookout for something new, with The Last Lion failing to provide a solution, and a relationship with Darley sees the Coventry Stakes winner Buratino (£3,000) heading across to Darlington from Kildangan Stud. His two crops on the track so far include the dual Listed winner Snapraeterea. There has been a reasonable amount of movement in the National Hunt and dualpurpose sphere too. Leading Light, the Gold Cup

and St Leger winner, spent seven seasons at Grange Stud and is still in the early stages with his runners. He has made the switch to Dunraven Stud in Bridgend, beginning at £2,500. When owner David Brace secured his services, he allowed Ask (£2,000) to move north to Willow Wood Farm in Cheshire. The astonishing feats of the late Jeremy in the jumps world, seen through his four 2021 Cheltenham Festival winners including Appreciate It and Sir Gerhard, prompted an understandable stampede to find more of his sons. Kool Company (€2,000), a dual Group 2 winner and one of Jeremy’s best on the Flat, was spirited away from Spain and looks a shrewd signing by County Meath’s Clongiffen Stud. Meanwhile, Manatee (€3,000), a Group 2 winner over a mile and a half and Dartmouth’s Monsun halfbrother, has shown promise with early jumps

‘Magician represented an exciting announcement late in the year for Meelin Stud’

prospects sired in France and was bought by Ronnie O’Neill’s Whytemount Stud in County Kilkenny. Chapel Stud has had a busy year and Walzertakt (£2,500), a smart stayer on the level and a son of Monteu, has moved to Worcestershire after five seasons in France, while dual Prix Kergorlay scorer Marmelo (£2,000) switches to Norton Grove in North Yorkshire after a couple of years on the continent. Irish 2,000 Guineas and Breeders’ Cup Turf hero Magician (€4,000), whose peripatetic life has seen him on rosters in the United States, France and Italy, represented an exciting announcement late in the year for Meelin Stud in County Cork. And just this week it was revealed that another Classic hero, Kingston Hill, an unbeaten Group 1 winner as a juvenile whose threeyear-old campaign peaked in the St Leger, would be continuing his stallion career at Nunstainton Stud in County Durham. He has stood at Coolmore for the past six seasons, initially at the operation’s Fethard base and latterly at Castle Hyde Stud. He will stand this season at £2,000. TOM PEACOCK
