OME of the sires with their debut crop of foals selling over the course of the next few weeks will have been among the star performers of the last pre-Covid season, 2019. The bloodstock market was badly shaken by the pandemic, as you would expect, in 2020, but this summer and autumn has been little short of a revelation in terms of figures at yearling and horses in training sales, among others, and both stallion masters and mare owners with foals to sell will have been buoyed by the strength of trade.

Classic quality for middle distances

In providing Godolphin with their first Derby winner in their famous blue silks in 2018, Masar proved himself to be a flagship horse, not only for the Godolphin racing operation but also the Darley brand. The son and grandson of two Derby winners in New Approach and Galileo, as well as hailing from the family of Urban Sea on his dam’s side, perhaps it was somewhat inevitable he would be a Classic winner as Derby glory was in his blood. Precocious enough to defeat Invincible Army over six furlongs at Goodwood in May of his juvenile campaign, Masar also ticks the box when it comes to the all-important qualities of precocity and speed. He has 27 first-crop foals to represent him at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, including New England Stud’s colt (397) out of a winning full-sister to Queen Mary Stakes winner Jealous Again, Petches Farm’s colt (596) from the family of Subjectivist and Sir Ron Priestley, Charlock Stud’s colt out of a full-sister to Goodwood Cup heroine Illustrious Blue, and Brook Stud’s half-brother (890) to Railway Stakes scorer and National Stakes second Beckford.
