SOME of the sires with their debut crop of foals selling over the course of the next few weeks will have been among the star performers of the last pre-Covid season, 2019.

The bloodstock market was badly shaken by the pandemic, as you would expect, in 2020, but this summer and autumn has been little short of a revelation in terms of figures at yearling and horses in training sales, among others, and both stallion masters and mare owners with foals to sell will have been buoyed by the strength of trade.

Classic quality for middle distances

In providing Godolphin with their first Derby winner in their famous blue silks in 2018, Masar proved himself to be a flagship horse, not only for the Godolphin racing operation but also the Darley brand.

The son and grandson of two Derby winners in New Approach and Galileo, as well as hailing from the family of Urban Sea on his dam’s side, perhaps it was somewhat inevitable he would be a Classic winner as Derby glory was in his blood.

Precocious enough to defeat Invincible Army over six furlongs at Goodwood in May of his juvenile campaign, Masar also ticks the box when it comes to the all-important qualities of precocity and speed.

He has 27 first-crop foals to represent him at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, including New England Stud’s colt (397) out of a winning full-sister to Queen Mary Stakes winner Jealous Again, Petches Farm’s colt (596) from the family of Subjectivist and Sir Ron Priestley, Charlock Stud’s colt out of a full-sister to Goodwood Cup heroine Illustrious Blue, and Brook Stud’s half-brother (890) to Railway Stakes scorer and National Stakes second Beckford.

‘The sole son of the much-missed Deep Impact at stud in Britain, Lanwades resident Study Of Man has all the credentials to be a sire of note in the future’

By contrast, but notably, Masar has just the one foal for sale at Arqana, a son of Al Baidaa (463).

The sole son of the muchmissed Deep Impact at stud in Britain, Lanwades resident Study Of Man has all the credentials to be a sire of note in the future.

The Prix du Jockey Club winner won his only start at two and hails from an outstanding Niarchos family, being out of a half-sister to French Classic winners Kingmambo and East Of The Moon, who are in turn out of the influential Miesque.

Study Of Man has six foals catalogued at Tattersalls and one at Goffs, namely Ballydorgan Stud’s colt (423), whose family includes Starlit Sands and this season’s highclass juvenile filly Sandrine.

By the late perennial champion sire Galileo and Stakes second Aljezeera (695), who is selling at Tattersalls, while at Goffs there is Oghill House Stud’s colt out of a full-sister to Racing Post Trophy hero Marcel (436) and Ballylinch Stud’s halfbrother to Brown Sugar and Burnt Sugar (580) who take the eye.

from the fabulous and famed ‘W’ family, Waldgeist is another exciting prospect for Ballylinch Stud and plenty of eyes will be drawn to his first foals as they enter the sales rings of Britain, Ireland and France.

Winner of the Criterium Saint-Cloud at two before a narrow second in the Prix du Jockey Club, the chestnut’s defining moment on the track came when denying Enable a record third consecutive Arc.

However, it is looking ahead not back that will be the focus over the next few weeks and he will have 11 lots representing him at Goffs, with a further six heading to Park Paddocks and five to Deauville.

Chief among his foals, at least from a pedigree perspective, are Newsells Park Stud’s three-parts sister to Listed winner and Park Hill

Magna Grecia’s stock and reputation has been done no harm whatsoever by the excellent exploits of halfbrother St Mark’s Basilica this season, although he was hardly shabby on the track himself anyway, with victories in the Vertem Futurity and 2,000 Guineas to go with his outstanding family credentials.

couple of foals listed at Arqana.

Highlight lots at Tattersalls include Church View Stables’ colt out of a full-sister to dual Nunthorpe Stakes hero Borderlescott (681) and Castletown Stud’s half-sister to German Oaks scorer Well Timed (991), while Goffs lots that catch the eye include Ballintry Stud’s filly out of a daughter of Italian Oaks heroine Bright Generation (557) and Woodford Stud’s half-sister to dual Group 3 scorer Onenightidreamed (634).

Irish National Stud resident and Irish 2,000 Guineas victor Phoenix Of Spain – who reversed form with Magna Grecia at the Curragh after their Vertem Futurity head-tohead – is the latest son of Lope De Vega to have his first crop of foals on the scene.

Both Kildare and Park Paddocks will witness the sale of a sizeable number of the attractive grey’s progeny, with the former hosting the likes of the Irish National Stud’s filly out of champion Italian juvenile Fly On The Night (274) and Baroda Stud’s halfsister to Phoenix Stakes scorer Lucky Vega (642).

The latter’s haul includes the Norris Bloodstock-consigned filly out of a half-sister to Real World and Dubai Fountain (768).

By Dubawi and out of brilliant broodmare Dar Re Mi, he was unbeaten in four starts at two, including the Dewhurst, and won the Prix Jean Prat and Sussex Stakes the following term before injury and subsequent retirement to Dalham Hall.

Highlights of foals by him selling at Tattersalls include New England Stud’s halfbrother to Summer Mile Stakes scorer and multiple Group 1-placed performer Aljamaaheer (961), a colt out of a stakes-winning full-sister to Irish Classic victor Roderic O’Connor (963), and Silfield Bloodstock’s filly out of an unraced full-sister to Godolphin’s top-class globetrotter Fantastic Light (663).

Speed superstars

Advertise was well received in his first year at stud and, given his excellent race record and physique, there is no reason why his first crop of foals should not prove popular.

The son of Showcasing was a Group 1 winner at two and three, with placings in the Coventry, Dewhurst and July Cup also on his impressive CV.

Among his representatives at Tattersalls are Cobhall Court Stud’s half-brother to Scarbrough Stakes winner and the Group 2-placed Global Applause (747), and Stephen Kemble Bloodstock’s halfsister to American Grade 3 winner Simply Breathless (1044), while his Goffs lots include Annshoon Stud’s filly (919) out of a winning halfsister to Forest Storm, the dam of Night Of Thunder.

A durable and consistent performer from two to five, Blue Point was another Royal Ascot-winning sprinter to enter the stallion ranks in 2020.

The son of the late Shamardal not only became a rarified performer in winning the big Group 1 sprint double at the famed meeting, the King’s Stand and Diamond Jubilee, but had also proved a precocious talent at two, when winning the Gimcrack and placing in the Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes.

Needless to say he has plenty of representation at Tattersalls and Goffs, including at Kildare Paddocks with The Castlebridge Consignment’s colt out of Ballycorus Stakes winner Alanza (720), while Houghton Bloodstock offer a colt out of a half-sister to Blue Bunting (630) at Tattersalls, where there will also be Ringfort Stud’s half-sister to Duke of Cambridge Stakes heroine Indie Angel (934).

There is just the one opportunity for foal buyers at Arqana to get their hands on a Blue Point, in the form of a colt out of the former Michael Halford-trained Embiyra (244).

Coolmore recruit Calyx was the first son of Kingman to be retired to stud and the Coventry Stakes winner has plenty of first-crop foals to represent him, with Langton Stud selling a colt (543) out of Cherry Hinton Stakes winner Please Sing at Tattersalls, while Collegelands Stud offers a half-sister (636) to this season’s stakes winner Bellosa at Goffs.

He also has a couple of filly foals selling at Arqana, out of the once-raced De La Warr homebred Josephine Bettany (12) and the other out of dual winner Game Zone (266).

Another notable sprinting recruit with first foals selling is Nunnery Stud resident Eqtidaar, whose potential sale highlights include, at Tattersalls, Trickledown Stud’s filly (723) out of a half-sister to the dam of Asymmetric.

Yeomanstown Stud recruit Invincible Army has a halfsister to Abernant Stakes victor and Prix de l’Abbaye third Hamza (581) catalogued at Goffs.

Middle Park Stakes and July Cup hero Ten Sovereigns has a filly out of a full-sister to Irish St Leger winner Flag Of Honour (683) who will be sold by Genesis Green Stud at Tattersalls.

Soldier’s Call, meanwhile, has a Coolagown Studconsigned daughter hailing from the family of Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes winner Perfect Power (124) at Goffs. The same consignor is also selling a Soldier’s Call colt out of Listed winner Spinning Lucy (906), again at Kildare Paddocks.

Foals by Inns Of Court, Land Force and Le Brivido will also be worth looking out for across the sale rings of Britain, Ireland and France.
