INTER DOMINION 2015 - 2017

2017 Inter Dominion Champion Lazarus

Article by Wayne Currall The recent Inter Dominion held at Gloucester Park was the last of the three championship series held in WA.

master of WA’s little champ Chicago Bull and tough, no-nonsense Sydneysider Tiger Tara.

And it was fitting that the best was left until last.

The first two home in the final - Lazarus and Chicago Bull highlighted the diversity of the standardbred breed.

In 2015, Victorian raider Lennytheshark outmuscled local hope Lovers Delight to be crowned Inters champion. “Lenny” was a worthy victor and underlined his status as the best in Australasia. He returned in 2016 but injury hindered his effort to defend his crown.

Lazarus is a five-year-old black entire with the build and physique of his sire Bettors Delight. He is a magnificent specimen with a commanding presence about him and an attitude that proclaims “here’s a classy horse”.

It was left to Lenny’s stablemate Hectorjayjay to fly the flag for Victoria and Australia, but tough New Zealand gelding Smolda outstayed his younger opponent in a gripping final. With Smolda retiring shortly after his Inters victory, his trainer/ reinsman Mark Purdon entered a handful of horses for the 2017 series in an effort to make it successive Inters crowns. In the end, Purdon relied on dual New Zealand Cup winner Lazarus and Have Faith In Me, who holds the title of Australia’s fastest horse after his phenomenal win in the 2016 Miracle Mile when he stopped the clock at 1:47.5. But it was Lazarus who stood tall in the final when he proved the

TABtouch Inter Dominion 2015 - 2017 Then there’s Chicago Bull, who is the same age as Lazarus and has the same sire. That’s where the similarities end. The “Little Bull” is a lightly framed gelding that you wouldn’t glance twice at. He’s the smallest pacer champion trainer Gary Hall has ever trained, but what he lacks in size he makes up for in heart. The 2017 Inters series also underlined the prowess of the fantastic bloodlines of super sire Bettors Delight, who sired the first three placegetters. And the crowds that have flocked to Gloucester Park over the past three years of the Inters series has shown that people will come to the track when the best horses from Australia and New Zealand do battle.

2016 Inter Dominion Champion Smolda

That was evident in early December when more than 9000 harness racing fans were on course to see champion Kiwi pacer Lazarus frank his claim as the best pacer in the southern hemisphere with his brilliant victory in the 2017 Inters final.

Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) has worked with Harness Racing New South Wales/Club Menangle and Harness Racing New Zealand to agree on an approach that will maintain the traditional Inter Dominion heat format.

The good news for local fans is that Inter Dominion champion Lazarus is staying in WA to contest the $300,000 Fremantle Pacing Cup (2536m) on January 12 and the $450,000 WA Pacing Cup (2936m) a week later.

“We, along with our partners, have agreed it is in the best interests of the Inter Dominion series to run with three rounds of heats,” HRV boss David Martin said.

The Inters victory took Lazarus’ career record to 40 starts for 33 wins and seven placings and his career earnings climb to $3,317,139. Purdon is also keen to contest the Hunter Cup in Melbourne and Sydney’s Miracle Mile, both run in February, with Lazarus - a pacer he has described as the best horse he’s ever trained. We won’t see the Inter Dominion Championship series return to Perth until at least 2021 after a recent meeting between the governing bodies. The Inter Dominion will retain its traditional three rounds of heats followed by a grand final in Victoria next year.

“Feedback from punters, participants and fans suggests this is what people want, and given how exciting the build-up was to the Perth Inter Dominion, this is also what works.” Harness Racing Australia revealed Victoria, NSW and New Zealand would host the Inter Dominion over the next three years, with consideration of other jurisdictions joining in during the second or third rotations. HRV has invited Victorian clubs to apply to host Inter Dominion heats next year, for heats to be held at venues away from Tabcorp Park Melton. Melton will host the Inter Dominion Grand Final on December 15, 2018. 

A snippet of the year that was...

RIDING FOR THE DISABLED (RDA) HORSES In 2017, with the assistance from Off the Track's acknowledged retrainers, we have gifted six horses to Riding for the Disabled Centres throughout WA. Off the Track sourced three suitable Thoroughbreds & three Standardbreds who all retired from racing in late 2016/early 2017. We then sent them to our acknowledged retrainers for education. Their suitability for RDA purposes involves weeks of training and assessment. We are thrilled that all six horses ticked the boxes this year and are now very much loved and thriving in their new careers at RDA. Another three Thoroughbreds are currently participating in the retraining process and looking promising.

With generous support from our partner Touchstone Farm, we have offered guidance and education ranging from feeding, farriery, dentistry, veterinary care, and coaching in different equestrian disciplines. Our clinics are very popular and benefit the welfare and longevity of our retired racehorses post racing.

JOCKEYS V INTERSCHOOL SHOW JUMPING CHALLENGE Superior talent, super riding & sensational entertainment!! That was the Interschools Versus Jockeys Show jumping Challenge, held at the State Equestrian Centre Brigadoon. Our retired Racehorses, Jockeys and Interschool Riders delivered what we had hoped for and more. Simply brilliant riding from all riders and outstanding show jumping skills from their retired racehorse mounts made for an exciting evening. This year’s event is guaranteed to be bigger, better and even more entrertaining!

CLERKS OF THE COURSE

CAVALLETTI CLASSIFIEDS

Clerks of the Course throughout WA have been sponsored with Off the Track gear for horse and rider.

The introduction in early 2017 of assisting trainers and owners find new homes for their retired racehorses through advertising on behalf of Cavalletti Classifieds has to date, homed 56 horses this year. Off the Track pay for the advertising, at no cost to trainers and owners. All horses are advertised for an appropriate dollar value and in all cases this amount has been paid, or near offer reached. Off the Track has all the equestrian contacts and those we don’t know, we know someone who does. We are sure to help you find a long term loving home for your valued racehorse.

While riding their retired racehorses turned clerk horses on race days and wearing the Off the Track gear, it highlights to racegoers and the general public one of the many second career options available to retired racehorses post racing. Clerking at race meetings is just one of the career options available.

RACING INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAM

COMMUNITY TAB & LIFELINE WA

Throughout 2017 Community TAB partnered with race clubs around WA to fundraise for not-for-profit groups in their local communities. 2017 was the third year Community TAB ran this program to give clubs the opportunity to support groups in their community, with Community TAB matching the fundraising along the way. In 2018: Community TAB partnered with 35 Race Clubs; Race Clubs fundraised $60,347 for not-for-profit groups; Community TAB doubled this bringing the total raised for groups to $120,695; and 47 not-for-profit groups around WA benefitted from the Program. Thank you to all of the race clubs who partnered with us in 2017 and all of the people who donated to not-for-profit groups on race days.

Community TAB was very proud to once again support Lifeline WA’s Christmas Campaign in 2017/2018.

COMMUNITY TAB SPORTS GRANTS Since being launched in November 2017 Community TAB has received over 100 applications from sporting clubs all around WA to receive a Community TAB Sports Grant. Due to the overwhelming response Community TAB awarded two grants in December 2017. Community TAB awarded Tom Price Netball Association and Kardinya Lakes Cricket Club $4000 grants each. Metropolitan and regional sporting clubs in WA are welcome to apply for a grant of up to $4000 to support their club. Community TAB will provide at least one grant each month to a sporting club to further their contribution to the sport and recreation industry in WA. Once a club applies for a grant, the application will stay within the pool until the grant is awarded. Sporting clubs can apply for a grant at communitytab.com.au. Terms and Conditions apply. 8 January - RACING AHEAD HARNESS

Community TAB donated $25,000 to support this year’s campaign bringing the total financial contribution from Community TAB to Lifeline WA to over $200,000 throughout the past four years. This contribution has gone towards training more Telephone Crisis Support Volunteers who answer calls from people in need or at risk, while the demand for Lifeline WA’s service grows. It costs $25 to fund one crisis support call to 13 11 14 and contributions to the campaign will directly support Lifeline WA to expand its crisis support services and train more volunteers so that Lifeline WA can answer every call.

BOTRA News Content provided by BOTRA The 2017 Inter Dominon has been run and won by the outstanding duo of Mark Purdon and Lazarus. Congratulations to all local and visiting trainers and drivers for participating in a very successful series. Great racing was witnessed at the Bunbury Trotting Club and at Gloucester Park. The BOTRA “Long Shot Promotion whereby a trainer who is a financial member of BOTRA, trains the longest price winner at any track in Western Australia, receives a $100 bonus. Wayne Justins and Ross Olivieri have won the bonus twice in recent times. Matthew Scott is leading the field with his recent winner at Pinjarra paying $31.90, at the time this correspondence goes to print. The Popular Petstock Bio John/BOTRA monthly award recognises outstanding achievements each month by participants in the Harness Racing Industry. A $50 voucher sponsored by Petstock Bio John is awarded to 2 winners each month. This award is for financial BOTRA members only and you are encouraged to participate by joining BOTRA for the 2017/2018 season. Recent winners of this award were Mitch Miller, Deni Roberts, Phil Duggan, Rob Abercromby, Aldo Cortopassi and Matthew Saw. Congratulations to you all. Invoices have been sent for BOTRA Memberships for 2017/2018. Please address payment of these invoices as soon as possible. The $25 annual membership payment supports BOTRA with day to day administration costs and, more importantly, indicates your support for a hard working Committee that serves you, the harness racing participant. Have your say in the industry, join BOTRA now. BOTRA has requested a review by RWWA Stewards of the 25 drives rule before being able to drive at Gloucester Park. BOTRA believes that this rule should be amended and applied by Steward’s discretion. A letter has been sent to the Chief Steward and the Stewarding Panel for their thoughts on this matter. The Whip Rules are still ongoing with the likelihood of wrist action only, hands on both reins with a modified implement in use. It is the opinion of many that there will be a total ban of the whip in harness racing in the near future.

A request to return to standing starts racing for the Fremantle Cup has been sent to Gloucester Park and RWWA. BOTRA also believes that true handicapping should be applied to this iconic race with no special conditions applied. This request is still under review. New Penalty Guidelines have been presented to BOTRA by RWWA Stewards for further scrutiny. These Penalty Guidelines, as presented, were fully supported by BOTRA. BOTRA sincerely thanks the Stewards for their consultative approach on this and other important issues throughout the year. BOTRA and indeed the harness racing industry is looking forward to the implementation of the new handicapping system to be introduced by RWWA as part of the harness strategic plan. The new system of grading will allow horses with similar abilities to race and not necessarily be uncompetitive by racing out of their class. There is still quite a bit of sorting out before this system is in place and RWWA will be continually consulting with BOTRA and other industry groups to make sure the ideology and the process will work into the future. The long awaited decision made by RWWA to pay back to last place has been well accepted by the industry. BOTRA will be requesting constant reviews of this initiative and look forward to a 2% (or better) reduction from stakes to allow more funds to flow to connections of horses that do not earn. BOTRA, as part of the Spider Fund, supports the introduction of payments made for claims for LZR Carbon Fibre wheels to be made directly to participants by the Spider Fund and not through the repairer. This will allow claims to be finalised more speedily. All claims must still follow the current procedures set in place by the rules of the Spider Fund. BOTRA thanks you all for your support throughout the year and again reminds you to become a BOTRA member and be part of the resurgence of our great industry. May you, your families and friends have a happy and safe Festive Season and a prosperous New Year. 

2017 TABTOUCH INTER DOMINION SERIES The Inter Dominion was a standout series, with the performances of Lazarus, Chicago Bull, Soho Tribeca, Lennytheshark, Tiger Tara, San Carlo and our own Vultan Tin all memorable. From a mares and Westbred perspective, Ideal Alice (American Ideal USA) ran a couple of great races culminating in a win in the $125,000 Westral Mares Classic from a brave Ameretto (Million Dollar Cam USA); Auctioneers Elsu (Elsu) won a Heat of the Binshaw Classic with Aussie Delight (Bettors Delight USA) winning the $50,000 Final in a lifetime best 1:55.2; and Maczaffair (Mach Three CA) ran a terrific second in the Golden Nugget, nearly making it two wins in 4 years for owner Albert Walmsley. There was some great racing all round, with the series itself covered elsewhere in this magazine.

VULTAN TIN IS THE REAL DEAL

Lazarus was purchased from the 2014 Christchurch Yearling Sale for $75,000, carrying the name “Better Than The Best”. His new owners Phil and Glennis Kennard, Trevor Casey and Kevin Riseley decided to rename him Lazarus. While some may be superstitious, this was obviously not unlucky for either Lazarus or his ownership team, although the original name, in hindsight, suits him too. Being by Bettors Delight USA out of the unraced Christian Cullen NZ mare Bethany, Lazarus is a product of two stallions who have rewritten the record Books as Sires in New Zealand and Australia. Bethany was purchased by breeder Gavin Chin in 2010 and has produced 2 foals of racing age including her first foal Champagne Dreams (Art Major USA) 1:55.6 10 wins $60,917 and then Lazarus. Bethany is out of Spirit Of Beth (Sokys Atom USA) who is out of Tabella Beth (Able Bye Bye USA), both relatively unsuccessful race mares. However, this family has produced standout performers, with Golden Slipper winner Mitch Maguire (Sportswriter USA) and other half million dollar earners amongst them.

Back in April 2017 our correspondent Howard King wrote an article about Vultan Tin (by the unheralded sire Dawn Ofa New Day USA, who is also the sire of Breeders Crown and APG winner Royal Verdict 1:53.5 $537,522, Atlastalone and Argyle Red) in our “pedigree of the quarter” segment for the national TrackBred magazine. At that stage Vultan Tin was the winner of 9 races with 18 placings from his 63 starts for earnings of $84,799 and a best mile rate of 1:56.1. Wow, what a difference now. By the end of last season his stakes were $110,000 for that season, and already this season he has $116,000 for total stakes of over $282,000. The 6yo gelding qualified in 9th place for the Inters Final after an initial ranking of 39, then ran a super 4th in the Final. His win tally is now 14, with 27 places.

Lazarus, under the care of master trainer Mark Purdon, gave his connections an inkling of his ability in his very first race start, pacing a last quarter in 26.8 to easily record the first of his 33 wins to date. Later that season he sizzled home in 25.1 when winning the 2 Year Old Jewels Final.

Vultan Tin did not race as a 2YO, and as a 3YO he won three races and was placed five times including a second in the South West Derby. At 4 he won four races and was placed 11 times from his 29 4YO starts. As a 5YO he won 5 and was placed in nine with a best mile rate of 1:55.9. He won the Italian Cup in March this year, the Narrogin Cup in April and has shown a definite liking for the longer distance races. Vultan Tin ran 1:56.4 over the 2536m mobile to win an M1-M3 in November, leading into the Inters. He now looks to be a real chance for the WA Pacing Cup and Fremantle Cup, after an open company win in 1:56.1 a week after the Inters Final, again over the 2536m. Trainer Phil, and owner breeders Phil and Daniel Costello are definitely enjoying the ride.

Soho Tribeca was born on prominent WA breeder Robert Watson’s Victorian property, not far from the Melton track. He completed all his 2 and 3 year old racing in his home State of Victoria. He did not win a Group 1 as a 2YO or 3YO, but gave every indication of his brilliance and versatility in finishing 4th to Our Waikiki Beach in the 2015 Breeders Crown Final for 2 year old colts and won the Group Three Caduceus Club Cup and Semi Finals of the VicBred Series and Australasian Breeders Crown as a 3YO.

Vultan Tin's dam Ellevarrac (Pacific Fella USA) 1.59.3 $12,986 won 1 race and was placed 6 times from 30 starts. This is a very old female line and members of one of the other arms of the family include Indomitable (Saab) 1:53.8 $133,759. Unfortunately there are no fillies from Vultan Tin’s immediate family.

CHAMPIONS STALLIONS OF THE FUTURE Will the 2017 Inter Dominion shape the future of harness racing in Australia? In a rare circumstance, there were 4 very exciting stallions competing and winning over the Inter Dominion Carnival. These stallions are expected to go to stud in the next few years and along with recent Australasian retirees to the stallion ranks, offer breeders across Australia a real chance to breed to the best blood available in the world, without necessarily choosing a US bred stallion. The 4 stallions in question are Lazarus, Soho Tribeca, Lennytheshark, and Ultimate Machete. 10 January - RACING AHEAD HARNESS

His stunning race record has just kept building from there - three Derbies, two NZ Cups, a Chariots of Fire and now an Inter Dominion Final, putting Lazarus in a class of his own. He is not a big horse, but his record is huge, 33 wins 7 places from 40 starts, stakes of $3.3 million and a best mile rate of 1:49. Do not miss the chance to see this stellar 5YO compete in the WA Pacing Cup and Fremantle Cup in January.

Following his 3 year old season, Soho Tribeca was transferred to the WA stables of Kim Prentice and his career really blossomed. As a 4YO he won 6 times from 10 starts including the Golden Nugget Prelude and Group 1 Final, the Semi Final and Group 1 Final of the rich VicBred Series. A second and third placing to Chicago Bull in the Fremantle Cup and WA Pacing Cup respectively showed everyone that this was a serious race horse, and arguably Robert Watson’s best. A now 5YO, his WA form leading into the 2017 Inter Dominion Series provided an indication that he was not going to be out of place in the prestigious Series and his resounding first night defeat of the NZ champion Lazarus was certainly “game on”. A further win on the second night of heats and then a game second from barrier 9 in the third round provided Soho Tribeca with a perfect launching pad into the million dollar Final. An unkind barrier against the super Lazarus in 2 was a huge disadvantage. Soho Tribeca is by American Ideal USA, without question one of the World’s leading sires. Like his son Soho Tribeca, American Ideal USA was unfortunate to be born the same year as another champion (Rocknroll Hanover), having to share the racetrack spoils. However he possessed blazing speed on all size tracks and has passed this asset on to many of his progeny.

WASBA News Soho Tribeca is the third foal of the unraced mare Pixel Perfect (by Art Major USA), who was purchased by Robert Watson from the 2008 Tasmanian Yearling Sale - one of the best buys ever at a Yearling Sale. Pixel Perfect is out of 2016/17 Australian Broodmare of the Year Amarillen, by champion Fake Left USA out of Panorama USA mare Nellirama. It’s another 4 generations before we hit a NZ bloodline in the super NZ broodmare Bonnie Averil. All Amarillen’s other foals have been winners, including Villagem (Village Jasper USA) 1:52.1 $626,585, Miss Graceland (Rocknroll Hanover USA) 1:55.7 $196,643 and Nostra Beach (Somebeachsomewhere USA) 1:53.5 $196,300. Despite not racing, Pixel Perfect is on her way to replicating her mother’s outstanding record, with her first 4 foals all winners and with earnings of $1,045,200 and climbing. The first two foals, colts by Mach Three CA, have won $125,000 and $198,250 respectively. Her 4th foal, a filly by Courage Under Fire, has won $141,470 to date and is possibly the second best mare racing in Victoria this season, behind Ameretto. Soho Tribeca’s race record now stands at 47 starts, 18 wins, 20 placings and prizemoney of $580,239. Future years should see substantial increases on that, with Soho Tribeca a genuine Grand Circuit horse. He certainly ticks all the boxes when it comes to selecting a stallion prospect, but owner Robert Watson and trainer Kim Prentice will be looking forward in the short term to many more wins and some intriguing battles with Lazarus and Chicago Bull. Lennytheshark is now into his seventh season of racing, with only 74 starts to date. He has had to compete against the best throughout his career. The wins include the NSW Derby (defeating Guaranteed, Bit Of A Legend, Majestic Mach and Ultimate Art), the Victorian 4 and 5 yo Championship (twice), five Heats of the Inter Dominion , the Victoria Cup (twice), the Miracle Mile and of course the 2015 Inter Dominion Final at Gloucester Park. He is unlucky that it might have been the 2016 Inter Dominion as well if not for a hoof abscess. He is one of a select few horses in Australia to take a sub 1.50 record in Australia - 1.49.2 in winning the Miracle Mile earlier this year, whilst he was only beaten a short half head in the fastest Mile ever on Australian soil - Have Faith In Me’s 1:47.5 in the 2016 edition of the Miracle Mile. Lennytheshark, a 2009 foal, was bred by renowned Victorian breeder Kevin Newbound and was born in Shepparton, Victoria. He is by Four Starzzz Shark CA, by Cams Card Shark USA. His dam is the Albert Albert USA mare Botswana 2:00.7, who was a more than handy racemare winning seven of her 61 career starts and prizemoney of $32,685. Botswana is a granddaughter of the Gay Reveler mare Mozambique, who was a full sister to Gay Acres and Gay Debutante. These three mares are responsible for countless Group winners in Australia over the past 40 years. The most famous son is probably champion racehorse and sire Classic Garry (Garry Rowan) 1:54.9, with others of considerable note being Mother Courage, Provocative, Penny VeeJay, Newbold Penny and Nolarama. Botswana’s first foal, the mare Led Suitcase (Blissfull Hall) won $261,395 before retiring and was followed by her full brother Blissfull Boy 1.54.3, who won $241,790 in WA and elsewhere. Lennytheshark was the fourth foal and his earnings sit at $2,894,085 from 38 wins and 29 places.

Lennytheshark should be given his opportunity at stud when the time comes – not many horses could do any better on the racetrack than Lenny. Lastly but not least is Ultimate Machete, the 4yo stallion by Bettors Delight USA. Ultimate Machete was born in the South Island of NZ and bred by Graeme and Katrina Walsh. Ultimate Machete raced only 6 times as a 2yo for 1 win (in a Heat of the NZ Sires Stakes) and 4 places. He really blossomed under the training partnership of Mark Purdon / Natalie Rasmussen as a 3 year old and on NZ Cup Day in November 2016 he won the NZ Sires Stakes Final in a blistering 1.52.6 over the 1950 metre trip. He then won the NZ 3YO Yearling Sales Final and the Flying Stakes before running seconds to stablemate Vincent in both the NZ Derby and NSW Derby. This season he trimmed up for his visit to Perth with a stunning win in the NZ Free For All in 1:51.9 on 17th Nov - sitting parked outside Tiger Tara and beating him comfortably. Seven days later he was scintillating in demolishing the field in the $125,000 Yes Loans 4YO Classic at Gloucester Park and then on Inters Final night won the $200,000 Golden Nugget almost as easily. These 2 wins at Gloucester Park are the only times that Mark Purdon has won on Ultimate Machete - his other 9 wins have all been achieved with Natalie Rasmussen taking the reins. Ultimate Machete was always bred to be an achiever on the racetrack. He is by Bettors Delight USA, one of the greatest Australasian sires of all time. His dam Reality Check (by Armbro Operative USA) was an outstanding juvenile Filly in NZ. She won the NZ Yearling Sales Classic for 2 year old Fillies, the Delightful Lady Classic and finished third in the Group One Caduceus Club Classic. Reality Check was bred by the famous Tuapeka Lodge in Southland and is a daughter of the Lordship mare Maureens Dream, a half sister to the former outstanding juvenile racehorse and successful NZ sire Tuapeka Knight. The first two foals and 4th foal of Reality Check drew blanks when it came to earning stakemoney. However her third foal, a 2011 filly called “Just Like Mum” (by Art Major USA), must have shown her breeders something and obviously Justin Prentice also, as he bought her at the 2013 Christchurch Yearling Sale. She was brought over to WA and races under the name Major Reality. Another one with a changed race name, but again no bad luck here with her winnings over $390,000 including the WA Oaks, the Empress Stakes, the Norms Daughter and second in the 2016 Mares Classic. The fifth foal was Ultimate Machete. Ultimate Machete has some powerful bloodlines through his immediate sire and dam , but it is steeped in quality further back as well - Maureens Dream carries the blood of U Scott, Lordship , Lumber Dream and Light Brigade and her descendants include Mister Odds On, Machtu and Ideal Scott (American Ideal USA) 1:52.8 $832,999. To date Ultimate Machete’s record reads 23 starts, 11 wins, 10 placings and stakes of $781,827. He will undoubtedly elevate his prizemoney to above the million dollar mark, but even if he doesn’t there is no doubt he will have great opportunities when he stands at stud.

Lennytheshark has a double cross of the US mare Brets Romance, the dam of B G’s Bunny USA and grand dam of the millionaires Albert Albert USA and Lis Mara USA. Millionaire mare Frith is bred on similar line to Lennytheshark.

RACING AHEAD HARNESS - January 11

WASBA News BOB HUMPHRIES MEMORIAL WINNER This year’s WASBA Bob Humphries Memorial was run on a very exciting Bunbury Cup night, with a big crowd on course enjoying the excellent racing. The $14,000 WASBA Bob Humphries Memorial was won by 4yo mare Ayana (Bettors Delight out of Global Image by Armbro Operative) in 1:58.3 for the 2100m, with the last half in 57.5. The lead time was a blistering 34.9 with Kyle Harper on Ayana going forward hard from barrier 1 to hold up in front. After a slightly slower first quarter, Ayana set a solid pace over the final three quarters to hold out sprint lane runner Parisian Partygirl and fast finishing Dior Mia More who flashed down the outside for third. Global Image, the dam of Ayana, has produced 4 winners including Lamplight Lili (Totally Western) 1:58.2 6 wins $50,345 and Ayana. Global Image is a half-sister to 5 winners including Global Force (Walton Hanover) 1:57.4, 18 wins $302,685, winner of the 2004 WA Sales Classic for 3yos and the 2004 WA Derby. Their dam Schehallion (Noodlum) belongs to the same maternal line as Alberta Retreat (Village Jasper) 1:57.3 8 wins $82,601, Annika Magic (Grinfromeartoear) 1:53.8 18 wins $114,849 and current Group winning 3yo filly Shez All Rock (Rock N Roll Heaven) 1:53.7, winner of 2 from 2 including the $50,000 Empire Vicbred Platinum. Ayana, who is trained by Trevor Wright for owner breeder Bryan Cousins, has shown a lot of improvement this season, with four wins and 6 places from 11 starts following her previous 9 starts producing only 2 places. Accepting the trophy on behalf of the connections was Trevor’s brother in law John Lowrie, the former studmaster at Bob Humphries' Trunkey Standardbreds. It was a fantastic result with so many "family" connections associated with the race. Congratulations to Kyle Harper for a top drive and a terrific willingness to assist with the after race sponsor activities.

Transfer the relevant fee to the WASBA account BSB 036 043, Account 129810, or forward a cheque to WASBA at PO Box 1270, Booragoon WA 6954 or pay by credit card. Thanks for your support on facebook. SNIPPETS WASBA sponsors “Pacing WA” and “Girl Power in Pacing” held their annual open day on 17 December at Byford, with all the 2yos doing an excellent job in the very windy conditions. The TrotSynd 2yos also worked out and they really did look impressive. Don’t miss some really good opportunities here to get involved in either a TrotSynd or Pacing WA youngster, call Ross Waddell on 0417 922 352 for more information. WASBA and Alabar are again putting part of the proceeds of our Stallion Tender to support a worthy person or organisation engaged in educating, retraining or rehoming retired Standardbreds. If you are, or know of, such a person or organisation, write to WASBA, PO Box 1270 Booragoon WA 6954 or email info@wasba.com.au. This year we are providing $1,500 sponsorship to Busselton Club for their Sweetheart Series, run during December and January. The breeder of the top points scoring Westbred mare in the Series will receive $500, and WASBA will hold $500 in breeding credits for her stud career. Additionally WASBA is providing $500 to the race book owner of the leading point scoring Westbred mare. The WA Yearling Sale is on Sunday 4 March 2018. This will be the second year under the APG banner. You can get some early homework done on some of the very exciting lots by checking out the online catalogue at http://www.apgold.com.au/yearling-sales/2018-saleslists/perth-sale/ . The hardcopy catalogue will be available just before Christmas but you can order your catalogue now at http://www. apgold.com.au/yearling-sales/order-a-catalogue/ . If you would love a catalogue but can’t access these links, email WASBA info@wasba.com. au or SMS or phone us on 0447 053 040 with your name and address details and we will arrange for a catalogue to be sent to you. Catalogues will also be available for collection at major clubs. There are 105 entries including yearlings by all the top Australasian sires. More details in the next Racing Ahead. WASBA supports opportunities for country trained fillies, with the 2018 WASBA Country Oaks at Bunbury in April upgraded to $25,000, thanks to RWWA. Conditions will be the same as in previous years, and no restriction on driver eligibility. Let’s see who follows in the steps of recent winners Delightful Jade, Dior Mia More and Allamerican Queen.
