Personality Profile Article by Robbie Dewar
SHANE YOUNG
There seems to be a sense of inevitability that Shane Young was always going to be in the harness racing game through being a member of the famous Young clan of Pinjarra, however that wasn’t always going to be the case. “Up until I was about 16 I was going to go in a different direction, what that direction was only time would tell but eventually I got involved with the horses. I am pleased to be more than just a trainer-driver as I derive a lot of my income from educating and pre-training horses. Trotting has been good to me and I am proud to be involved, “said Shane. Shane Young is this edition's Personality Profile.

Historical W.A. visionary creates Inter Dominion prestige Article by Wayne Currall I remember it like it was yesterday. I was a 14-year-old and it was the final of the 1966 Inter Dominion Championship at Sydney’s Harold Park. Champion New Zealand mare Robin Dundee was sent out as the hot favourite after dominating the heats. Most pundits expected her to win the final. She had dead-heated with Jay Ar in the 1965 final - still the only dead-heat in the rich history of the Inters - and was being hailed as the horse most likely to win the 1966 version.
It was electric and underlined to me - even at that young age - the prestige and tradition that surrounded “the Melbourne Cup of trotting”. The Inter Dominion Championship has strong links to Western Australia. It was in 1923 that WA’s remarkable administrator James Brennan at a conference of trotting officials presented the concept of an
But the heavens opened up and the torrential rain turned the track into a quagmire. Tasmanian pacer Chamfer Star took up the early running and despite a courageous effort from Robin Dundee, the horse from the apple isle prevailed in a slogging finish to deny the Kiwi mare. That race will always remain in my memory as one of the great spectacles I have been fortunate enough to see. Of course, being 14 I didn’t realise the importance or the significance of the Inter Dominion Championship grand final. What I did realise was the excitement from the big crowd that was on course.

Historical W.A. visionary creates Inter Dominion prestige annual championship be rotated among the Australian States and New Zealand.
Captain Sandy became the first multiple winner of the Inters when he won in 1950 and repeated the dose three years later.
Unfortunately his proposal was lampooned as outlandish and impractical, but not to be deterred, the visionary West Australian chairman pressed ahead without the support of eastern state administrators and promoted the first Australasian Trotting Championship in Perth in 1925.
Caduceus won in 1960, James Scott (1962), Cardigan Bay (1963), Binshaw (1967), Honda Grattan (1973, ‘74), Koala King (1980), San Simeon (1981), Gammalite (1983, ‘84), Preux Chevalier (1985), Village Kid (1986), Westburn Grant (1992), Jack Morris (1993), Our Sir Vancelot (1997, ‘98, ‘99), Shakamaker (2000), Baltic Eagle (2003), Elsu (2005), Blacks A Fake (2006, ‘07, ‘08, ‘10), Im Themightyquinn (2011, ‘12, ‘13) and Beautide (2014, ‘15 [March]) are just some of the illustrious names who have won the Inters championship title.
That inaugural championship, won by New Zealand pacer Great Hope, and the subsequent one in which another Kiwi called Taraire defeated his compatriot Great Bingen, both incurred a heavy financial loss to the WA Trotting Association and to Brennan personally. The Great Depression set in everywhere and consequently the Inter Dominion concept was again laid to rest. In 1935 harness racing delegates from all States of Australia and both islands of New Zealand met in Sydney in what was called the Australian Trotting Conference. From that conference was born the modern Inter Dominion Championships with the first series conducted in Perth in 1936 in recognition of the exemplary efforts of WATA president JP Stratton, who had lobbied for the series with great fervour. Logan Derby won the first Inters but World War II caused the abandonment of the series until 1947 when Perth again played host and big money was introduced with prize money of 8000 pounds. The famous Tasmanian mare Bandbox won the final and the championship to become the idol of the apple isle. Bandbox achieved a goal that was to elude her grandson in later years, the iron horse Pure Steel. And so the glamour of the Inter Dominion continued to grow. Stakemoney increased steadily, records toppled and the names of many unforgettable horses were added to the Inter Dominion honour roll.
The 2017 series, the third and last to be held in Perth for the time being, is shaping up to be one of the best on record. Once again there is a champion in the series in the shape of New Zealand superstar Lazarus, but, as has been the case in previous eras, sometimes champs are forced to lower their colours to a lesser light who has thrived during the hard racing over the three weeks. Most experts are tipping the winner to come from one of the group being labelled as the “Fab Four” - Lazarus, the 2015 (December) winner Lennytheshark, Soho Tribeca or Chicago Bull. It would take a brave man to say that the winner won’t come from one of these four wonderful pacers ... but the Inters has a rich history of throwing up the unlikely. Who knows what’s in store for harness racing fans when the field for the $1.1M final lines up at Gloucester Park on Friday, December 8. What we do know is that, like previous editions of the grand final of the Inter Dominion Championship, the race is certain to provide a spectacle that will live long in the hearts and minds of those lucky enough to be at headquarters to see the best pacers in the southern hemisphere battle it out. OWNERS ONLY ANNOUNCES ITS NEWEST AMBASSADOR Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) recently announced the appointment of Western Australian racing and fashion identity Brittany Taylor as the newest ambassador for its Owners Only initiative. Ms Taylor comes from a background entrenched in racing being the daughter of one of Perth’s leading trainers, Jim Taylor, as well as being a presenter for Sky Racing and regular contributor on TABradio’s The Sports Daily. In addition, Ms Taylor has also held ambassador roles for TABtouch and Perth Racing. “I am thrilled to be on board as an Owners Only Ambassador. My main aim in this role is to get new owners into this great game, particularly the next generation,” said Ms Taylor. “I really want to reinforce the mantra that ‘anyone can own a piece of the action’. One of the huge barriers to entry is that people think it is the sport of kings and only for the wealthy, which is simply not true!” Ms Taylor’s first-hand knowledge of the hard work that’s required from a training perspective is vital in providing valuable insight into the demands on trainers, to deliver a positive experience for owners regardless of their investment level. “Owners Only is a dedicated program that aims to further enhance the ownership experience and we look forward to Ms Taylor sharing her knowledge and experience to prospective owners and assisting them with their ownership journey,” said RWWA General Manager Racing, Charlotte Mills. More information can be found at the Owners Only website: www.ownersonly.com.au

COMMUNITY TAB SHINES A LIGHT FOR LIFE FOUR YEARS RUNNING Community TAB is supporting Lifeline WA’s Christmas campaign for a fourth year in a row, with a further $25,000 contribution to the not-for-profit organisation. This contribution brings Community TAB’s total financial support to the organisation to $200,000 which has provided training for more volunteers for their call centre, specifically over the festive season when demand is at its highest. People can show their own support by dedicating their Christmas tree or lights to the campaign, donate online or share their Christmas photo on social media using #shinealightforlife. Elizabeth Quay is also shining bright again this Christmas with Lifeline WA’s Christmas tree which represents all the people who were brave enough to call the 13 11 14 service this year and aims to spread cheer and hope throughout the community It costs $25 to fund one crisis support call to 13 11 14 and contributions to the campaign will directly support Lifeline WA to expand its crisis support services and train more volunteers so that Lifeline WA can answer every call. RACING AHEAD HARNESS - December 7
BOTRA News Content provided by BOTRA At the BOTRA Committee meeting held Wednesday 8th November 2017, there was a changing of the guard. The election of office bearers in accordance with the Constitution, was conducted with the following results: There were two nominations for President - Warren Robinson and Ross Olivieri. Ross Olivieri declined the nomination and Warren Robinson was elected President of BOTRA. The only Nomination for Senior Vice President was Kevin Charles who was elected unopposed. The only nomination for the second Vice President was Craig Abercromby who held the position from the previous year and was re-elected. Delegates for the Spider Fund are Warren Robinson and Glenn Elliott with Ross Olivieri as the alternate. Delegates for the Hardship Funds are Warren Robinson and Glenn Elliott. BOTRA organised a meeting on 25th October 2017 with Ms Barbara Scott, Chief Steward RWWA, and Mr Denis Borovica, General Manager Integrity RWWA, to discuss the Ease out Rule and other matters. Chris Lewis and Chris Voak attended this meeting. There was lengthy discussion on the wording of the “Guidelines for Assessing LR164 Incidents” and several opinions were expressed. Ultimately, the discretion of the Stewards in assessing incidents involving the ease out rule will apply. BOTRA was concerned that the current wording in the guidelines left the driver with little defence when a penalty was applied by the Stewards. Ms Scott said the Stewards would be addressing a new set of guidelines which will be presented to BOTRA for further assessment. Other matters on the agenda were: 1. The current speed of the Mobile Barrier. Ms Scott felt that the speed of the mobile barrier was appropriate and that the problem lay in the delay of the two lines in turning into the Mobile barrier before release point. A trial period will be held whereby horses in mobile start races will follow the procedure of standing starts and circle in the opposite direction behind the mobile barrier before moving into position for release. 2. Whip Rule It was reported that there is still a long way to go before a definite decision is made. It is highly likely that a modified implement with a 45 degree wrist action only will be implemented. 3. Bridging of Reins The suggestion of bridging the reins (both reins in one hand) by BOTRA to eliminate the current number penalties to drivers for loose reigning, was not likely to be introduced because of the proposed changes to whip rules. Other matters recently discussed were the Penalty Guidelines sent to BOTRA for their feedback. The Committee has indicated full support for the document as presented and this information will now be released to the industry in the near future. BOTRA has requested a review by RWWA Stewards of the current necessity of completing 25 drives before an A Class license is granted. BOTRA believes Stewards Discretion in each case should be applied. This matter has yet to be addressed. BOTRA has a good rapport with RWWA Stewards and sincerely appreciates the time given by them to attend Committee meetings to offer and listen to advice for the betterment of the racing 8 December - RACING AHEAD HARNESS
product in this State. A letter sent to RWWA and GPHR for Consideration for future Fremantle Cups to return to 2900 metre Standing Starts with no handicap Conditions applied is yet to be addressed by both parties. Recent monthly winners of the Petstock Bio John/BOTRA Award were: Don Harper, Adam Mellsop, Mitch Miller, Deni Roberts, Rob Abercromby and Phil Duggan. Congratulations to all recipients for their achievements in our great sport and a big thank you to Petstock Bio John for their continued support. While on the subject of Sponsors, BOTRA sincerely thank Garrards Horse and Hound for their continued support, principally with the BOTRA Cup and for their outstanding support for the three racing codes throughout Australia. Special thanks to Downunder Sulkies for their contribution to the popular Ultimate Razor Sulky Raffle and finally, thank you to all who have supported BOTRA in some way either by your contribution or by your belief in the Committee that works hard for the betterment of our great industry. The “Long Shot” promotion recently introduced by BOTRA is proving very popular. This promotion awards a $100 bonus for a trainer who is a current financial member of BOTRA and trains the longest price winner at any race meeting in Western Australia. Recent winners were Dave Simmonds, Glenn Elliott, Ross Olivieri (twice) and Wayne Justins. Incidently, Wayne Justins who won the last Long Shot prize, looks like pulling off the next month’s prize with his recent long shot winner “Simondou Su” ($72.80). With The Inter Dominion fast approaching and terrific racing anticipated, we wish all contenders for the Inters and the support races all the best of luck and safe racing. On a finishing note, please attend to your Invoice for Membership payment for 2017/2018. Your membership is an important part of BOTRA and represents the strength of this Industry body when addressing important industry matters on your behalf for the betterment of your industry.
