L-R: Mark Chadwick, Simon Miller and Joseph Azzopardi

Ocean Jewel is a gem for Chadwick Article by Robbie Edwards Simon Miller had no idea a successful partnership would emerge from a chance meeting with Mark Chadwick, when introduced to the businessman by stable client Jason Carone. The WA-born Chadwick had been out of the country for some 16 years working in the high-flying world of corporate reconstruction and finance in Indonesia, Singapore and China. Carone raced horses with former AFL Fremantle Dockers captain and radio commentator Peter Bell and still has horses with Miller, including Key To Fame. “Jason used to work with Mark overseas,” The trainer said. “To cut a long-winded story short I met Jason through Peter Bell and met Mark through Jason. “Mark expressed that he was interested in racing horses. “He is very analytical and looked at the results of the weanling prices and compared them to the yearling prices. “He decided it was better for him to purchase weanlings. “He knows the risks involved that you have to hold them longer and they can change, but he saw there was success in buying weanlings. “So every year we go to the interstate sales and buy four or five weanlings. “He looks specifically at the fillies with the long-term aim to build a quality broodmare herd.

we will pay a bit more for it.” The two men’s new-found association kicked off on a high when their first filly Fuld’s Bet won a two-year-old race at Ascot at her initial start in February 26 in 2014. Fuld’s Bet, by boom sire I Am Invincible from Dublin My Bet (by O’Reilly), returned at her next start to win the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1100m) as a $1.75 favourite, seizing favouritism for the $500,000 Karrakatta Plate (1200m). Miller’s plans were derailed when Fuld’s Bet was scratched on the morning of the Karrakatta Plate, after she was cast in her box overnight. “We have had a lot of luck too,” Miller said. “The fillies we have bought, their families have prospered after we bought them, which has been good.” Miller is confident the best is yet to come with Ocean Jewel spearheading the charge. Ocean Jewel is by Waikato Stud based sire Ocean Park and was purchased for $80,000 at the Inglis Weanling sale. She is a blue-blood, being from the Group 3 placed Danehill mare Markisa, a half sister to the Group 1 winner Shower Of Roses from the Group 1 winner Marquise, a daughter of the legendary Eight Carat.

“The fillies generally go cheaper than the colts because the pinhookers like to get the colts and then on-sell them. It is harder to pin-hook a filly.

Markisa also is a three-quarter sister to Danewin, Commands and Court Of Jewels and boasts an outstanding family tree, including Octagonal, Kaapstad, Mouawad, Tristalove, Don Eduardo and Diamond Lover in her pedigree.

“We are going to the sales to race the fillies and if we really like one

Ocean Jewel is a gem for Chadwick starts in the $100,000 Bunbury 3YO Classic (1000m), second up, on October 14.

Chadwick, with his wife Patricia, is busy converting a 60.7 hectare property into a pristine stud farm at North Dandalup.

Ridden beautifully by jockey Joseph Azzopardi, she crossed from the widest gate in 12, before dashing home from eighth on the corner, to win by ¾ of a length over Epic Grey and Art Series in the 1000m feature.

Chadwick owns 41 racehorses, broodmares and foals.

“I like to buy on type and then look at their pedigree before I purchase,” Miller said. “She just won on ability on Saturday. “She is a pretty exciting filly.

Currently their horses are agisted at Middlebrook Valley Lodge in Scone, NSW, and at Mungrup Stud, Forge On Park and Amelia Park in WA. Chadwick, 43, is a relative newcomer, having only been involved in the Australian racing scene for the past five years.

“We (Chadwick) go to the sales each year and purchase fast horses.

He has raced (when he was living in Singapore and Asia) and continues to race horses at Singapore.

“There were some good horses in that race and it was exciting to see how she picked them up out wide and working, when she is not even screwed down yet.

“We have 13 racehorses and the broader number of 41 is quite large, because we tend to buy weanlings,” Chadwick said. “Simon and I have been buying weanlings now for five years.

“Chaddy has a dozen or so horses with me and he is a good bloke and a good owner.”

“We are able to enter the market at a price I am very comfortable with and we have been able to pick up some classy types with a great pedigree.

Miller will map a three-year-old program to culminate in the $200,000 Champion Fillies’ Stakes (1600m) at Ascot on November 18. Azzopardi made the right choice after having the pick of Ocean Jewel, Father Knick and Galveston Bay. “They are all nice horses,” Azzopardi said. “I was able to stay clear of a scrimmage. “I got a good run behind them and just rode her patiently. “Coming around the corner I had a few on the inside but I was able to maintain a bit of cover and she finished off really well. “She is a very, very, smart filly, no doubt about it.” Chadwick was all smiles after Ocean Jewel’s brilliant victory. The bay filly was certainly impressive at taking her first step to stardom. Ocean Jewel won under the “hoodoo” of the race club’s colours, after a mix up - and not his red, black crossed sashes and sleeves and red diamond armbands colours.

Ocean Jewel is a gem for Chadwick “If we waited an extra year we would have paid a lot more for them. “You look at the pedigree of Ocean Jewel and it is a sire-making pedigree. “It certainly was one of the things that attracted us to her. “Ocean Park was a first season sire but our focus is generally to the dam’s side of the pedigree. “When you get a chance to buy into the Eight Carat family, you jump on it! “I had been involved in owners’ syndicates in the past, but five years I got serious about racing horses.” Chadwick has applied the skills he has acquired from his successful years in business to his thoroughbred project. “Racing is one of the few interests my wife and I share,” Chadwick said. “She got the bug from the first race meeting she went to in Malaysia, when we had a runner. “I was fortunate enough to sell a business, which has enabled me to take my interest in thoroughbreds to the next level,” Chadwick said. “From Day One we had a business plan and have remained disciplined to that plan.

Chadwick with RWWA Manager Commercial Racing & Planning, David Hunter

“We won a Gimcrack Stakes early, but this year it looks like it is really going to take off, with some good three-year-olds like Ocean Jewel and Rubia Miss, who was a great two-year-old. “We recently had a big winner with a three-year-old in Singapore. “Singapore is a big part of our strategy going forward. “The prize money there goes from strength to strength and it plays a big part in our operations.” Chadwick with a group of his friends celebrated a win at Moonee Valley on September 29 with So You Too, who is trained in Adelaide by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas. The four-year-old had won four of his 14 starts at the time of writing.

Chadwick said he is not a punter, but entered racing to escape the pressures of a hectic workload.

horse, which is about Listed level here.

“I had quite a stressful job,” Chadwick said. “I would find that by going to the races and the sales my stress levels would plummet.

“We are looking at winning as many Black Type races as we can in the future to boost the quality and depth of our broodmare band.”

“The more time I spend with horses the lower my stress levels go.

Chadwick and Amelia Park proprietor and long-time owner Peter Walsh have joined forces purchasing five weanlings this year.

“I also like the people in racing. “There are many genuine people in racing and I love spending time with them. “That has been a big thing for me.

Walsh owns last year’s Champion Fillies’ Stakes winner Samovare. The Savabeel mare was prepared by Dan Morton in Perth, but is now with Team Hayes in Victoria.

“At the moment I am concentrating on our racing interests, but I could go back to work later.”

Walsh owns Achernar Star, who was runner-up to Lucy Mae in this year’s Karrakatta Plate and he celebrated a winner with First Affair, in a previous race (4) to Ocean Jewel’s big Bunbury win.

Chadwick is at the starting point of converting a turf farm into his dream thoroughbred farm – two doorsteps away from the longestablished nursery of Touchstone Stud Farm.

“Mark and Peter have decided to team up and bought five weanlings this year,” Miller said. “We bought the five of them at the Inglis Sydney sale and they went off to the farm.

“One of the amazing things I find is that the people who own the agistment places and stud farms where we currently have our horses are happy to help with advise on how we should construct our property,” Chadwick said.

“They are now yearlings, but are still a year off from racing.

“And that is despite knowing they will lose our horses once our property is up and running. “We have got an equine property consultant from Sydney involved and we have just started developing. “We won a Group 1 race in Kuala Lumpur with an ex-Godolphin

“I am mindful that Mark worked in Singapore, so I school a few up for him and send them over to Singapore. “I bought a filly for him for $9000 called Divided House (I Am Invincible-Boston) and she has won over $350,000 in Singapore. “At the time you don’t realize the form, but she ran a half length second to Sheidel as a two-year-old in a Belmont Park mid-week. “Cliff Brown trains for Mark in Singapore and Cliff and I have been mates for a long time. It is an amicable relationship.”

LANDOR RACES 2017 Article by Nigel Weston The Eastern Gascoyne Race Club held their 96th Annual Landor Race Meeting on the weekend of September 30 and October 2.

It’s fair to say that a stride before the line and a stride after the line that Antoccino was in front.

Crowd numbers were very high once again with possibly more people attending this year than in previous years.

But on the line with Jockey Jessamy Walsh, asking for the ultimate effort, Biara Flyer managed to put his head down at the right time.

The meeting is unique for many reasons, one being no barriers and the starter, on horseback, giving the instruction to jump. The other is the remote location, being 80km from the picturesque Mt Augustus Tourist Park.

Training honours on Saturday went to first time Trainer Jeana Venz who prepared three winners on the day. Two of the winners, Centipede and Black Coba, are owned by Northern Thoroughbreds Syndicate.Last years Cup winner, Black Coba, led throughout and beat the handy galloper Mystery who had raced in The North West earlier in the year.

Horse numbers were slightly down and with horses no longer allowed to start twice on the same day the field numbers were reduced. This didn’t prevent any of the competitive and exciting racing from taking place, with the first four winners on Day One, all going to different trainers and jockeys. The most impressive of the early winners was Kojarena who showed he has lost none of his dash at the tender age of 10. He jumped to the front clearly and was never going to lose, bolting away for a 5 length win over the 800 metres. It was the first of two winners on the weekend for Jockey Samantha Jones who was riding at her 20th consecutive Landor meeting. The Feature race on Saturday was the $4645 Landmark Ladies Bracelet (1200m) with last years winner, Biara Flyer, a short priced favourite to repeat the dose. But things didn’t go quite to plan with Biara Flyer a little slow away and settling in third place early. The Craig Wendt trained Antoccino was running a bold race and hit the front with about 500 metres to go. Biara Flyer was gradually working home hard and racegoers were treated to a great struggle between these two horses over the final stages.

6 - November - RACING AHEAD Features

Black Coba travelled beautifully throughout and Jockey Sally Hammarquist took the Blackfriars gelding to the line under a tight hold. The winners were shared around again early on Day Two,but Biara Flyer made it look easy by winning the $3085 H.M.Rutter Trophy by 7 lengths and in doing so made it five wins straight at Landor and The Horse of The Year award. The $5425 Elders Landor Cup (1800m) brought together an even field of five runners with punters divided between three runners as the main winning chances. Black Coba started favorite, but punters were left flat footed when he missed the start by 3 lengths. It was a keen battle from the word go, but Ten Outa Ten was always travelling well just behind the leaders. Black Coba had to travel three wide along the back straight and, combined with missing the start, the task was proving difficult. It was at that stage that Jess Bain onboard of Ten Outa Ten made her move and The Craig Wendt galloper quickly put paid to his rivals to record a five length victory. Ten Outa Ten had shown some staying ability some years earlier when trained by Jane Hossell and the victory was sweet for Craig Wendt

Landor Races 2017 who just missed winning The Bracelet/Cup Double with Antoccino beaten a whisker. It was also a brilliantly judged ride by Jess Bain giving her a well deserved major victory at Landor. Racegoers with a keen eye would have noticed the run of Super Saxon on Saturday in The Bracelet and they were keen to back him in the $3085 Mt Clere Handicap (1400m) on Monday. In a three horse field the result was never in doubt once the former Alan McNamara Jnr 5YO found himself in front on jumping and he raced away for a carefree five length win. The victory sealed The Trainer of The Year Award for Walkaway Trainer, Jeana Venz. The Jockey of The Year Award was much closer and it came down to the last race with Jessamy Walsh needing a win to clinch the title from Sally Hammarquist. Walsh on Rodinia was up against the flying Kojarena but Rodinia proved to be the quicker of the two in the run home.

Rodinia held the inside running and made Kojarena work on her outside. Around the corner the former Noel Pateman trained Rodinia dashed away for a convincing win. In her 99th ride at Landor, Jessamy Walsh rode another winner and she’ll be hoping for another at her next ride at Landor. It was also the 4th winner of the weekend for Trainer Julie Walsh. The huge number of campers started packing up early Tuesday morning as another successful Landor came to a close. The only minor concern is horse numbers with The Club needing apporoximately 40 horses or more to run a successful two day race meeting. The Club will look at ways to attract horses which may include increasing prizemoney, starter subsidy and more ‘open’ class races. Owners and Trainers of horses no longer capable of competing on the provincial circuit can also play their part by offering these horses to trainers who race at Landor. One thing is for sure though, that hundreds of enthusiasts will converge on Landor next year for their 97th Annual Meeting. 

GOOD GROUP NEWS FOR YARRADALE STUD Yarradale Stud is looking forward to more Group success at Ascot and Flemington in November. The Gidgegannup nursery will be represented by Salorsci (Discorsi), Rockon Tommy (Vital Equine) and Silent Sedition (War Chant) in feature races on either side of the continent this month. Salorsci has Group 1 potential according to trainer Jeff Noske. The Yarradale-bred sprinter began his summer campaign with a first-up victory in the D’Orsogna Hcp (1000m) at Belmont last month. “He’s a fighter. He gets his head in front and then keeps going. We want to get him out to a mile for the Railway Stakes.” Noske bought him as a weanling for $3,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions Winter Sale and he’s earned $242,300, including $87,500 in Westspeed bonuses, for a large syndicate headed by his wife Jody.

Yarradale stands Vital Equine in association with Rosalee Park at Serpentine. Its draft for the 2018 Perth Magic Millions will include a Vital Equine filly from Sweet Apparition. The Canny Lad mare is a half-sister to the dam of recent LR Hannans Hcp winner Disposition. Silent Sedition remains on track for the Melbourne Cup carnival after going down less than two lengths first-up in the G1 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 7. The War Chant mare cut a foot while spelling and she will be peaking for the G1 Myer Classic (1600m) on November 4. War Chant (USA) heads Yarradale Stud’s 2017 roster at an $11,000 (inc gst) fee. The remainder of the line-up – Bradbury’s Luck, Gingerbread Man, City Place (USA), Heritage and Vital Equine (Rosalee Park) – are available for $4,400 (inc gst).

The Noskes went back and bought his half-brother by City Place for $20,000 at the Yarradale Stud yearling sale in May. He has been named Salcity. Rockon Tommy completed a rapid hat-trick for Eglinton trainer Bill Doughty at Belmont following a Northam maiden win on debut in September. “He’s green but Peter Knuckey reckons he got an engine,” Doughty said. “He’s still learning but we’ve got time to see if he’s ready for a race like the (G2) WA Guineas.” Doughty bred Rockon Tommy from Sushi Quatro (Key Business) and he has another two fillies from the mare by Universal Ruler. She hails from a family nurtured by Gervase Park’s Chris and Anthea Gales.

SPEEDY MARE TOO GOOD IN GOLDFIELDS Demerit mare Don’t Speed finished the Goldfields season with a well-deserved victory in the Vissign Australia Hcp (1760m) on October 1. She was a front-running winner in June and had been beaten less than a length on another three occasions before the final day in Kalgoorlie. “She’s consistent but has been a bit unlucky,” part-owner and trainer Dean Nazzari said. “It’s a long season and she will go down for a three-month spell in Esperance. The spring grass down there will do her the world of good.” Don’t Speed is the first foal of Sunspeed (Speed Week) who also won in Kal before bone chips ended her career. “I raced the dam with Roy Harper and Martin Epis and a few mates – Brian Barnicott, Brett Royle & Jamie Flannery – have joined the partnership.

“We decided to send Sunspeed to Demerit in his first book,” Nazzari added. “He’s by Lonhro and was a Group winner in Melbourne. We’re happy with the way it’s turned out and he’s siring some quality horses in Perth.” Demerit is based at Taunton Vale for a $3,300 (inc gst) service fee and studmaster Kent Johnston has upgraded the stud’s website to coincide with the arrival of new sire King’s Troop (Redoute’s Choice). www.tauntonvale.com.au I'M ALL THE TALK - COVENTRY TO RIO FILLY The first-crop foals by Sydney stakes winner I’m All The Talk are arriving in numbers at Mungrup Stud in the Great Southern. This lovely filly is from Neville Parnham’s Ascot winner Coventry To Rio.

BRILLIANT DEBUT BY KISS THE BREEZE Electra Bloodstock manager James Christie and breeder Ben Duncan have launched Perth’s juvenile season with talented filly Kiss The Breeze. The Star Witness youngster claimed the Initial Plate (1000m) with a potent kick at Belmont. “I was more nervous than normal before the race,” trainer Adam Durrant admitted. “It was like sending a kid to their first day at kindergarten but she didn’t let us down.”

year’s Magic Millions. Christie’s family raced Tattersalls Cup winner Ma Chienne and his learning curve in the industry included stints with Coolmore Stud in the Hunter Valley and Brian Mayfield-Smith at Flemington. Duncan’s family bred WA legend Northerly and, apart from the bloodstock business, he’s the Principal Distributor in Australia for Horserail.

Kiss The Breeze was purchased by Christie for $72,500 at this year’s Perth Magic Millions from the Duncan family’s Oakland Park draft. Her dam Paris Heart (Seignorial) is a half-sister to Oakland Park homebred Paris Petard (G3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes). After the winner returned to scale, Durrant declared she will be a G3 Champion Fillies prospect in 12 months. “She was never on the track and didn’t touch the bridle until coming to the corner. She really found the line today and there’s plenty of improvement ahead.” Besides Kiss The Breeze, Electra Bloodstock syndicated colts by Magnus & Denman and fillies by Snitzel & Written Tycoon from this

“We are looking forward to welcoming our regional heat winners to Ascot in December for the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field Final,” said General Manager Racing, Charlotte Mills. “Country racing plays an integral part in the Western Australian racing industry, with 49 out of 51 race clubs being located in regional areas, therefore it is important that we continue to support and promote regional racing and its social aspects through initiatives such as the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field.” In addition to the nine nominated regional heats, any winner of a Western Australian regional Fashions on the Field competition, will be able to enter into an online ‘wildcard’ competition. The three entries with the most votes will also be invited to Ascot where one of the top three will be selected to join the other finalists in the Final. The top three Wildcard finalists will be announced in early November. All of the action for the Final will take place in the Leger Lawn Marquee located at the 400m mark of the racetrack, and will include the running of the Final parade, as well as a DJ, bar and tote facilities. Tickets are not required for the marquee as it is open to the general public, however, general admission tickets will be needed to enter the racecourse. For more information head to www.wacountrycups.com.au

The winner of the 2017 WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field Final will take home a trip for two to London with Motive Travel, to attend arguably the most famous racing carnival in the world, Royal Ascot. Attended by Her Majesty, the Queen of England, not only does Royal Ascot attract some of the world’s finest racehorses such as the likes of Black Caviar, but it is also well known for being a spectacle of fashion and style. To add to the prize pool the winner will also receive $10,000 spending money thanks to TABtouch, as well as a diamond piece from Leon Baker Jewellers, and a voucher for popular Western Australian handbag and accessory label, Jessica Bratich.
