HOUSTON Article by Taylor Courtland This year’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling sale is expected to attract more attention than it has in recent seasons.

The Trevor Andrews-trained galloper won the two-year-old classic, taking home the $146,800 winners cheque.

A total of 368 lots have been catalogued this year, an increase of 19 on 2015.

Let It Slip took out the $150,000 three-year-old trophy.

David Houston, Magic Millions Perth manager, said attracting new investors had been a priority for the organisation. "Things are looking up in that aspect with a larger number of yearlings up for purchase." He will be hoping the amount of spending can also be surpassed. More than $10.4m was thrown around last year. Houston said Magic Millions were trying a number of things to continue the increased interest in the sales and raceday. “We have 368 horses catalogued this year in Perth, that is about 20 up on last year,” he said. “They are all WA bred yearlings and eligible for WestSpeed bonuses which is great for buyers with all the local schemes. “We go out and inspect all the possible yearlings who are looking to head to the sales and select the ones most saleable and potential race horses.”

Houston is hopeful the move to Pinjarra Race Club continues to pay off and the industry continues to back the move. “We changed our magic millions day to Pinjarra last year and this year we will build on that,” he said. “Pinjarra is a different track with a different atmosphere where the whole industry can show off.” Houston’s thoroughbred stud career started when he was in his teens and has been a lifelong passion. It is a career which has taken him around the country. He was manager at Baramul Stud in New South Wales Widden Valley for Sir Tristan Antico and then held the same position for Rob Ferguson on Torryburn Stud in the Hunter Valley. Victoria was Houston’s next stop to develop and run the north western stud farm Burnewang North for David Hains. He moved onto Kingston Park in the Mornington Peninsular in which he spent time working with stallions at Nagambie.

The local Magic Millions raceday is set down for February 11, a stand alone Saturday meeting at Pinjarra.

The position at the WA office of Magic Millions was offered to him and he has held that for more than four years.

Last year was the debut of the day at Pinjarra and shot The River to stardom.

“WA racing obviously has its ups and downs, the economic situation and the possibility of the TAB being sold,” he said.

David Houston Gold Coast, with more than $10m of prize money available, helped to promote the industry and drive partnerships for the company. “The quality is outstanding and the day on the Gold Coast with $10m of prize money is great incentive,” he said. “It is a great way to promote the industry and nearly impossible to get tickets to the races on that day now, it is the biggest event in Queensland. “We are trying to capture that excitement and bring it back to Perth to lift the profile of racing and attract buyers from all over the world.” He said the sales in Perth had been steady in terms of spending in recent years. Attracting new investors was near the top of Houston’s to-do list and having buyers from different jurisdictions would help increase the profile of WA racing. “There have not been too many new major investors coming forward here in Perth,” he said. “In the east there have been investors from America and China, some of the battle here in WA is how isolated we are.

“Clearly there is not the population over here in the west, our company is going gangbusters in the East. “So it is difficult with the isolation, but on the other hand, we race for good prize money on a Saturday and are not bombarded with interstate visitors.” “In South Australia they consistently have runners coming from Melbourne and Sydney taking their prize money. “It is easier here and with all the WestSpeed incentives, it is good prize money.” All the lots at the Perth Magic Millions sales are WestSpeed eligible. Stallion Eurozone has his first progeny available for purchase as yearlings this season. The colt defeated Group 1 winners Dissident, Criterion and Cox Plate champion Shamus Award during his career.

“On the other side of the country gallopers can go from the Gold Coast carnival, to Melbourne then to Sydney for the Golden Slipper and Championships carnival and following that to Brisbane. “There is year around good quality racing for good prize money.” “We have a three-week carnival in November.” Houston said there should be a major interest in trying to get people interested in racing again. He admitted it was very evident organisations were trying to attract new people to the track and therefore creating the opportunity for new investors. “I have been going to the races since I was a year old and there is a changing face about a day at the races,” he said. “There is a lot of entertainment. I took some friends to the track recently and they loved the atmosphere and the fact they got to mingle with people from many other walks of life. You do not have to be a punter these days to go, there is many other things to do.

Lot 174 at the Perth sales is a colt by Eurozone from $1m stake earner and Railway Stakes winner Belle Bizarre.

“We need to get people enjoying the races and get involved. That also goes for people involved in racing making themselves available to the public.

Another interesting colt in the catalogue is by Gingerbread Man from Fiorentina.

“It is like going to the football and the players walk around the boundary and high five fans and take pictures etc.”

From the same sire that has produced two-year-old winner Achernar Star.

The Magic Millions raceday is on February 11 at Pinjarra Race Club before the sales on February 20 and 21 at Belmont Racetrack. 

Houston said the quality of yearlings this year was very good. He suspected the newly introduced Magic Millions race day on the

KEEPER KEEN Article by Robert Edwards Members of the Long Table Lunch syndicate certainly struck the jackpot when they bought a share at a charity auction in juvenile Keeper Keen.

Sayers put a reserve of $50,000 the colt, but he was passed in at $45,000.

Yarradale Stud proprietor Ron Sayers donated a 10 percent share in the colt to the Long Table Lunch, which is a collaboration of the Rockingham community to promote the beaches and stimulate economic development, on the condition that all of the proceeds went to the charity.

Sayers has kept the other 90 percent share in him.

Not only was $10,000 was raised for charity with the sale of the colt but 20 new faces have been introduced to thoroughbred racing. One of those new faces is Rockingham’s Lord Mayor Barry Sammels. Keeper Keen lived up to his name when he edged along the inside rail to post an impressive 1 ¾ length win over 1100m at his debut at Ascot on November 12. He earned $60,000 in prizemoney and bonuses. The gelding’s courage was put to the test when he had a tumultuous battle with Riasc before winning the Crystal Slipper Stakes (1100m) on November 28.

“He was a bit backward looking being the first foal,” Pearce said. “I brought him home and broke him in and then turned him out for two months. “He really developed from the breaking in and the spell and he is a horse who just keeps on improving. “I think he will be a better galloper next preparation. “The sale was actually three months too early for him because he was undeveloped. “I originally approached Ron to lease the horse and then the charity came up. “I spoke to Ron about it and he was happy for him to be auctioned as long as all of the money went to charity.

His connections now celebrate a whopping $157,000 in prizemoney and bonuses, making him a true jackpot.

“He now has 20 new owners with a large portion of them having never been involved in horse racing before.”

It was a strong win by Keeper Keen and trainer Daniel Pearce is looking ahead to him tracing the footsteps of his dam Keeper Quiet (Scandal Keeper) in next autumn’s Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) and Group 3 WA Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Ascot.

Sayers’ Yarradale Stud will offer yearlings by home sires War Chant (22), Frost Giant (19), Gingerbread (13), City Place (9), Scandal Keeper (8) and Musket (1).

Pearce trained Keeper Quiet when she ran second to the boom youngster Luke’s Luck in the 2012 editions of the Karrakatta Plate and WA Sires. “She had a lot of ability, but she had leg issues,” Pearce said. “Those issues got worse as a three-year-old and we were forced to retire her.” Keeper Keen is the first foal from Keeper Quiet and because he is the first-born he was immature at the time of last year’s February Magic Millions Perth yearling sale. 6 - January - RACING AHEAD Features

War Chant is on fire with his son Variation winning the Group 2 WA Guineas and his daughter Silent Sedition winning the Group 3 Summoned Stakes at Sandown in November. Breeder Ellie Giles has a half brother to Silent Sedition by Gingerbread Man from Fiorentina at the sale. WA’s premier stallion Blackfriars will be represented by 25 lots including a close relation to the dual Group 1 winner Playing God and his full brother God Has Spoken.

Keeper Keen Scenic Lodge presents the colt, a son of the Scenic mare Idyllic Doll. Leading Australian sire Not A Single Doubt, whose sons Scales Of Justice and Good Project, quinellaed the Group 1 Railway Stakes will be represented by three yearlings at the sale. Beluga Park Stud will present a bay colt from WA Guineas winner Moccasin Bend. Former good sprinter All Friared Up has a bay colt and Sambar has a half brother Champion Fillies Stakes winner Samovare (Savabeel). First season sires Playing God, City Place, My Admiration and Galah will be strongly represented. Playing God has 16 lots with former top class Hong Kong galloper My Admiration having 17 lots and Rangeview Stud presenting 17 yearlings by their Redoute’s Choice stallion Galah. Leading interstate stallions Charge Forward (2), Choisir (3), Hinchinbrook (1), Helmet (1), High Chaparral (2), Magnus (4), Star Witness (6), Testa Rossa (2), Written Tycoon (2), Your Song (3), Husson (3), Foxwedge (3), Bel Esprit (1), Lope De Vega (1), Medaglia d’Oro (1), Mossman (1), Nicconi (1), Street Boss (1), Piero (1), Artie Schiller (1), Dundeel (1), Eurozone (3) and Reset (1) will be strongly represented. Tauton Vale Stud will offer a full-brother by their Lonhro sire Demerit to last season’s leading two-year-old Spangled Impact (Spangles) and a half-brother to the Group 3 WA Sires winner Showy Chloe (Alfred Noble-Special Kiseki) The sale will be held at Belmont Park starting on Monday February 19 and be run over two days. There will be a 365 lots offered. 

WESTSPEED INCENTIVE SCHEME

Military Reign Article by Taylor Courtland The WestSpeed incentive scheme promotes the breeding and racing of horses in Western Australia. The scheme includes increased financial rewards associated with owning and racing a WA bred horse and has been implemented to keep owners in the industry longer. It is also designed to encourage local breeders to source quality sires and/ or dams to improve WA bloodlines. The 1999/2000 racing season was the first time the scheme was implemented, in the 2000/01 season a total of $236,500 in bonuses were paid. More than $5.6m in bonuses were paid during the 2015/16 season. Impressive Racing Pty Ltd are taking full advantage of the rewards and have created a well-known reputation for breeding their own gallopers. Kevin Berry is the manager of the company with Darren McAuliffe the head trainer. Stable star Military Reign, by Universal Ruler from General’s Delight, has just began her four-year-old campaign. Military Reign has earned $349,950 in stakes and then added a further $180,000 in WestSpeed bonuses. Berry said Impressive Racing breed their own stock for two reasons, it guarantees access to the horses they want and secondly their results over the years have shown a better overall outcome from horses they have bred or at least raised. “As for WestSpeed – our emphasis at all times is profitability. If a horse isn't profitable we offload it at the earliest opportunity.”

“WestSpeed greatly improves the profitability of locally bred horses, and for us at least, pretty much eliminates sourcing horses from east. It is near on impossible to show a return from paying eastern state sales prices and not earning WestSpeed with those horses.” TC: Universal Ruler has been a very successful stallion for you, can you talk about him? KB: Universal Ruler was a very talented and brilliant horse, and from a sire line that was very successful here in WA, hence why we were keen to get him to stud. Other than for shin soreness that caused him to miss his years Karrakatta Plate, he never suffered any injury or unsoundness from racing or training. However his playful and inquisitive nature was the cause of a number of stable incidents with fences, etc, that saw his racing career restricted to only the 12 starts. Off to stud he went with us being hopeful that he at least would be a horse we would be confident in to send our own mares to, but hopeful he could achieve commercial success, which he certainly has done – above and beyond our highest expectations, but justifying our belief in his pedigree, brilliance and soundness. TC: How did the owners get involved with Military Reign? KB: Military Reign we bred. We purchased her Dam as a weanling from the Gold Coast a number of years ago. The mare unfortunately got injured during breaking and could never race. She went on to have two foals, due to fertility issues, who are Military Ruler and Military Reign. So two from two you could say. A major client spotted Military Reign in the paddock as a weanling during a visit one day and begged us to sell him a large share of her. We did – unfortunately leaving us with only a smaller percentage than we usually like to keep. A small share of a good horse is better than a large percentage of a bad horse and we also kept a very happy client and friends. TC: She was a star three-year-old, now into her four-year-old season, how good can she be? KB: A lot better than demonstrated in the Winterbottom hopefully – in saying that, with excuses in drawing the extreme outside gate, sitting up to 6 wide the whole way around and most specifically pulled up lame with a hoof abscess. Probably not a Group One horse, but hopefully can knock off a few more Listed Races and perhaps a Group Three or Two. Still only just four-yearsold as you mention, so still a baby really.

Military Reign 8 - January - RACING AHEAD Features

The Universal Ruler stock have been showing that they keep improving with age, especially the fillies, eg Furious Dame racing at her career best now as a five-year-old, so she has plenty of time and maturing to come yet.

Westspeed Hopefully she can go well past ex stablemates like Fuchsia Bandana ($661k) and Impressive Jeuney ($618k) for total prize money earned. Certainly her record WestSpeed earnings ($180k) have given that goal a huge boost. Like Impressive Racing, Amelia Park have some promising young gallopers, mainly half-brothers Achernar Star and Atacama Sky. Achernar Star won the first two-year-old race of this season and collected the $38,400 prize money and $37,500 in WestSpeed Platinum bonuses, while half-brother Atacama Sky has earned $27,500 in bonuses from five starts. Sharon King, Racing Manager at Amelia Park who bred both gallopers and sent them to the stable of Simon Miller continued the story on the two young stars. SK: Achernar Star is a half-brother to Atacama Sky who we purchased 12 months earlier and had instant success with. We (Amelia Park) joined forces with Ellie Giles of Korilya Park Stud and we did our yearling preparations together. Peter Walsh (farm owner) took an instant liking to the Gingerbread Man

I Am Boudica racing for almost the same prize money as Victoria with less competition. I Am Boudica ran fourth on debut in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes behind Whispering Brook. She has won twice since in five subsequent runs, including a third in the Group 3 Champion Fillies Stakes. She has collected $137,900 in stakes earnings and $55,000 in WestSpeed money. Part owner Tony Patrizi expects the War Chant filly to continue to improve. TC: Can you tell me the story of how you got involved in the horse and how it was bred? TP: Bred at Yarradale stud here in Perth. I purchased the filly at the Perth MM sale on the recommendation of Craig Rounsefell (Boomer Bloodstock) The breeder Ron Sayers convinced me that he should retain a share so we race the filly in partnership. TC: How did she end up in Vernon Brockton's stable? TP: Vernon was also involved in the selection process with Craig so it was logic that Vernon trained the filly.

Atacama Sky

Colt (Achernar Star) as he had a real presence about him. TC: How did the horses end up with Simon Miller? SK: Simon Miller, who is our biggest supporter of the farm, had also seen him and loved him and then of course all the boys that were in Atacama Sky wanted to re-invest their earnings in another horse. TC: How did the name Atacama Sky come about? SK: One of the guys in the syndicate named Atacama Sky after a desert in Chile which is the best stargazing place in the world. Then he came back with an equally impressive name for the Gingerbread Man gelding in Achernar Star (Brightest Star).

TC: She has only won two races, but with bonuses has almost $250,000 in prize money, you must think the Westspeed scheme is a pretty good one? TP: Great scheme and an important part of our stakes system in WA. The scheme has flexibility for owners with two different entry levels and now the added bonus of the new platinum scheme which costs owners nothing. TC: How good do you think she is going to be? TP: We like the filly a lot and believe she will have a lot to offer us in her future campaigns. There is still plenty of improvement to come and nothing to date suggests that this will not be the case. For further information on WestSpeed schemes and how to get involved, visit the RWWA website and click on the link under the industry tab. ď Ž

TC: How did all the owners get involved in Atacama Sky? SK: The boys that came in the first syndicate all came together through one of Pete's builders in Dan Jancec (Amba buiding). Most are from the building trade and we had a few additions to Achernar Star including Pete's nephew and close friends. TC: WestSpeed is continuing to grow every year, why do you think that is and what is the best thing about breeding and racing locally? SK: WestSpeed is outstanding and is the greatest incentive to purchase horses from WA and now with the Platinum Scheme, it is even more attractive. Achernar Star earnt approximately $80,000 for his first win as he was WestSpeed and also Platinum qualified, it was absolutely amazing and he paid for everything with just that win. Anything now is an absolute bonus. What more can be said, but buy local and reap the benefits as you are Features RACING AHEAD - January - 9
