RACING AHEAD - APRIL/MAY - 1

From the Racing Manager Work continues on the development of a new business model for Harness racing with a focus on programming, scheduling and handicapping. The Industry sessions have been well attended with over 150 participants providing much valued feedback on the proposed model. Overall the proposed changes were well received although it is recognised that the model was discussed at a high level with no real detail provided. It has been agreed that once a working model has been completed we will advise the Industry and participants will have the opportunity to “plug” their horses into the system to see how it might suit their particular stable. We are still probably a month or so away from being able to set up a site for this to happen however work is commencing to ensure that Industry have ample opportunity to make comment following that release to help iron out any bugs. There is a very strong support for some form of payment back to last for all races at both Metro and Provincial level with a commensurate change in the current stakes percentages to accommodate. We are currently looking at just what that level should be such that owners are not overly penalised for winning or running a place in a race by reducing too much of that stake money but at the same time at least ensuring that owners are getting some form of financial return for being unplaced. There was also strong support for the concept of a tiered racing circuit where owners/trainers have the opportunity to place their horses at venues where they are most likely to earn and do so with the knowledge that they should be competing with horses who are of genuine similar capability and form. It is likely that we will introduce a four tier racing system at Country, Provincial B, Provincial A, and Metro levels. It is proposed that each of these levels will have a base stake rate which will each be higher than the one below.

While the devil is in the detail, there was general consensus at most of the meetings that the current mixed handicapping system we have now does not serve us well and that programming needs to be more reflective of the current racing population at any given time. Similarly a mixed handicapping system of sex class stakes etc. has led to race conditions being overly complicated and not always providing the opportunity to maximise field sizes. It is clear that the volume of races we currently have cannot be supported with the current number of horses in the system and we will need to look at how best we can schedule meetings to meet the demands of the population. This may lead to a lesser number of races overall however should still provide more opportunities for owners/trainers to place their horses. While the final figures for the recent yearling sales have yet to come through it appears that the prices for lots sold was quite respectable and it looks as though the average sales price will be up on last year. The quality of the horses produced was first class and vendors should be congratulated on the way their horses were presented. A full report of the sales will be provided in the next issue of Racing Ahead. While on the sale, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate popular reinsman Ryan Bell on his recent engagement to Tiffany Sharpe. Ryan proposed on one knee to Tiffany at the recent yearling sales almost 5 years to the day where they first met. All the very best to you both. 

NOTICE TO INDUSTRY PARTICIPANTS Public Holidays and deadlines for April, May and June 2017 The table below outlines any race meeting deadlines that will be affected by PUBLIC HOLIDAYS during April, May and June 2017. Advance Attack soars to siring Success

By Peter Wharton

With sons of In The Pocket now having established themselves in no uncertain manner in the top bracket of sires, Advance Attack, who stands at Henty Brook Standardbreds, Burekup, for Mal and Tanya Hancock, has stud credentials second-to-none. Advance Attack, a $406,000 winning son of In The Pocket and a full brother to Courage Under Fire, is already well on the way to proving a success with relatively small crops from mainly unselected mares. Actually Advance Attack has made a spectacular start as a sire. In his first season he left seven live foals, and of these he had six qualified to race as two year olds and two were winners and competed strongly in the juvenile classics. Of four three-year-old starters, two were winners and two were placed, while his current crop of only 21 two-year-olds has already produced two very impressive winners in Fight Song (1:58.7), who is unbeaten in two starts to date, and The War Nurse, a winner in 1:57.9 at Pinjarra, as well as the very promising filly Cott Beach, who stormed home for a close second on debut in 1:55.3 at Bunbury and then buttered up a week later with a slashing win at Pinjarra in 1.54.9.

Flight Song winning at Pinjarra

Advance Attack is the leading two-year-old sire in Western Australia to date this season with three winners, ahead of top sires such as Bettor’s Delight, Somebeachsomewhere, Art Major and Mach Three. From his first crop Advance Attack sired a smart gelding in Persistent Threat 1:55.3 ($146,030), who won his first five starts including the WA Sales Classic and was one of the star two-year-olds of his season, and a talented racemare in Massive Attack, who won eight races in WA and finished runner-up in the $100,000 Westbred 2YO Classic and was later exported to America where she has consistently defeated the best female Free-for-allers in commission. She holds a mark of 1:50 and has banked almost $180,000. Enemy Lines (1:58.5) and Advance Academy, both three-year-old winners at Gloucester Park this season, have been other winners by Advance Attack from his first crops. Advance Attack was a top racehorse himself, winning more than $400,000, and he was one of the most outstanding two-year-olds of his year in New Zealand, winning the Welcome Stakes, Sapling Stakes and Cardigan Bay Stakes, all Group 2 classics. As a three-year-old he captured the NZ Rising Stars 3YO Championship, the Newcastle Guineas and a heat of the NZ Sires Stakes Championship, while as an open class performer he won a string of country cups in Victoria and Tasmania.

Persistent Threat winning at Pinjarra

On the score of blood Advance Attack lacks nothing. His sire In The Pocket (1:49.6) was a champion with stake earnings of $1.5-million and twice topped the NZ Sires’ list. Advance Debra, the dam of Advance Attack, has been one of the gems of the New Zealand stud book. She is the dam of seven individual winners, three of whom took records of better than 2:01, including champion of his era Courage Under Fire 1:54.2 ($1.5-million), Advance Attack (1:57.2) and Christian Fire (1:59.6). Advance Debra (2:02.5) was by the Albatross horse Vance Hanover from Deborah Dundee, by Dundee Adios (son of Robin Dundee) from the Aksarben mare Loving, and tracing to the taproot Entice. This is the family which has produced the Inter Dominion champion Vedette, Cyclone Kate (1:50.3), Mac De Stroyer (1:49.8), Glenferrie Alexis, Swift Judge (WA 3YO Sires Stakes) and many others. Advance Attack will be standing for a fee of $2,500 plus GST. Artificial insemination will be available next season. For a booking or further information phone Mal Hancock on phone 0411 985 232 or email maltanh@bigpond.com.au 

Ferguson

has eyes on the Garrards prize Micheal Ferguson says personal pride and state honours are on the line when the Garrards Young Drivers Concession Challenge resumes in April.

Ferguson said he can’t wait to renew his battle when the final round of the Garrards Young Drivers Concession Challenge gets underway in April.

Ferguson holds sway over his contempories, but with one round of heats remaining he has Lauren Jones and Bailey McDonough snapping at his heels.

Bunbury will stage the opening leg on April 22 and then move to Pinjarra on April 24, Northam on May 2 and back to Pinjarra again on May 8.

Ferguson climbed to the top of the leader board after driving two of the four heat winners in series two, combining with Raffaello and Falling Starzzz. Raffaello, prepared by Peter Kimberley, was sent out at double figure odds, but finished too strongly after being in a prominent position in running. Ashleigh Markham’s Falling Starzzz also escaped the attention of punters, but fell in after Ferguson went forward and dictated terms in front. The Garrards Young Drivers Concession Challenge was the brainchild of Racing and Wagering Western Australia’s Harness Driving Coach, Trevor Warwick. Warwick, who is one of four West Australians to drive more than 2000 winners, said the initiative was designed to boost the profile and exposure of young drivers. “There are not a lot of opportunities for junior drivers and this is a chance to give young men and women the chance to get their name out in the marketplace,” Warwick said.

“Now that it’s getting close my competitive instincts are kicking in,” Ferguson said. “I haven’t been this close before so it would be great to take it out. “The winner also gets to represent WA so that is another incentive.” The 2017 Garrards Young Drivers Champion will don the black and gold silks for Western Australia in the New South Wales Rising Star Series later in the year. Ferguson is the son of Brian Ferguson who came to WA from New Zealand as a stable hand for Ross Oliveri almost 30 years ago. The 19-year-old has driven over a 100 winners, the first in 2013 when he combined with the Gary Hall Sr-trained Yougottawanna. He is hoping to join Kristy Sheehy (2014-2015) and Stuart McDonald (2016) as previous winners on the Garrards honour roll.  Ferguson

ALAN NORMAN a sixty year Milestone

By Wayne Currall

When 11-year-old gelding Full Package won at Bridgetown in February, the horse broke an 18-month losing drought and, more importantly, set a benchmark for veteran trainer Alan Norman.

The children won their fair share of races before pursuing other careers, while Vicki's husband, Eric Chabros, is a trainer/driver and the couple's two children - Bronson and John Paul - are junior drivers.

The Serpentine-based Norman recently celebrated his 78th birthday and believes he may have the longest continuing involvement in harness racing in Western Australia.

Norman reminisced on his 60 plus years involvement in the sport.

It's a claim that will take some toppling. Norman has been involved in Standardbreds since he was 11, helping out his father, Charles, who trained and drove in the 1950s and had some success as an amateur jockey. In 1957, aged 18, Norman followed in his father's footsteps and also became a trainer- reinsman. He won his first race in the same year as a trainer/driver when Quell won for the young reinsman at Richmond Raceway. So with his first win as a trainer in 1957 and his most recent victory with Full Package in February, 2017 - Norman celebrates a 60-year milestone.

"Gee, a lot has changed since I first got involved," he said. "Dad used to have a property in Victoria Park and I remember jogging horses over the Causeway to get them to Gloucester Park. "We used to hang a hurricane lamp out the back of the cart for light and to keep us safe in the traffic. "In those days it was the done thing ... one bloke used to jog his horse from Cottesloe to GP." Norman also recalled the time him and Lyn travelled by road to Adelaide for their honeymoon. They went by car and their horse Quell was shipped across. "Me and Lyn went to Adelaide in an Austin A70 ... no paved road in those days," he said.

That's a record hard to beat and a remarkable achievement for a selfconfessed hobby trainer.

"We sent Quell across by ship and he ran third behind Aachen, an Inter Dominion winner, in the 1959 Christmas Gift.

And just to show the old bloke - Full Package, not Norman - hadn't lost his zest for racing, the rising 12-year-old saluted at his very next start at Collie for Norman.

"We had a lot of fun and Quell eventually ended up winning four races for us."

But telling Alan Norman's story wouldn't be complete without including his wife of almost 58 years - Lyn. "Lyn is the backbone of the place," Norman said from his 21 hectare property in Serpentine. "I couldn't have done anything without Lyn. She was there looking after our three children while I was at work, getting them off to school and then looking after the horses when she could. "It's been a great ride but we're winding down. "We're both getting a little tired now and when Full Package finishes racing we'll call it a day." Although only having one or two horses in work at any one time, Norman, a butcher by trade, has trained the winners of just over 100 races, including a Group 1 victory with Miss Placed in the 2007 Sires Final for fillies. "It was always an ambition of mine ... to win a Group 1 race," Norman said. "And to do it with a horse we bred ourselves made the win even sweeter." Miss Placed was later named Filly of the Year and her dam, On Golden Pond, received Broodmare of the Year honours in the same year with her progeny winning 49 races.

Norman rates the late Phil Coulson as the best driver he saw and Minute Man as the best horse he had the privilege of sitting behind. "Phil Coulson had no peer as a driver," he said. "He was a master in the bike. "And I got to drive Minute Man, who won three heats and the final of an Inters, in trackwork when he came over to Perth from Melbourne." Norman readily admits he misses his days of driving in races, but acknowledges that he's too old for that now. "I gave race driving away about 10 years ago and I do miss the competitive side of it," he said. "I still get into the cart to jog the horses up, but that's getting less and less now. "Once old Full Package lets us know that he's had enough then Lyn and me will try to sell most of our horses and take things a little quieter. "It's been a lot of fun, but we're getting on and we're looking forward to leading quieter lives." Six continuous decades in harness racing shows Norman's love for the sport. He and Lyn are true Aussie battlers who have turned their love of the Standardbred into a lifelong passion. ď Ž

What makes the Norman story even more remarkable is that all of their horses have been home bred. "Full Package has won more than $153,000, Our Golden Finale won $114,000 and Miss Placed $97,000," he said. "Not a bad return from the one mare ... I just wonder where all the money has gone. "On Golden Pond is 30 now. She gets very well looked after, fed twice a day and she has the run of the place. "But like all of us, she's slowing down." Norman also drove close to 50 winners and his long-term involvement in harness racing has encouraged all three of the Norman children Vicki, Mark and Brad - to become reinspersons.

Increasing the demand for retired racehorses post racing Animal welfare is a critical element of the Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) racing strategy. The quality of racing within WA is dependent on many factors but at the forefront is the welfare of our racing horses and greyhounds.

When retired from racing your horse may need -

RWWA’s Off the Track program continues to be an active voice within the racing and equestrian industries, positioning retired racehorses as the breeds of choice for equestrian disciplines and other pursuits. The program’s activities increases the demand for and supports the placement of retired Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses in second careers via sponsoring events, sharing success stories, promoting Retrainers and holding education clinics & shows for horses off the track. The program is widely recognised in the equestrian community as being a conduit for the successful transition of horses from the race track to alternative pursuits.

Off the track can assist you with finding a suitable home for your retired racehorse. We can advertise the horse on Cavalletti Classifieds under the specific ‘Off the Track’ tab at NO COST TO OWNERS OR TRAINERS. RWWA & Off the Track will pay for all advertising costs. Cavalletti Classifieds is the number 1, most frequented and popular website in WA for advertising horses and anything equestrian related and of course anybody throughout Australia can access this site.

Now in its third year of operation Off the Track has supported our retired racehorses and their new owners through the sponsorship of more than 200 equestrian events, hosting of Education Clinics & horse shows of which over 6000 retired racehorses have competed. If you are the owner of a racehorse you are primarily responsible for your horse’s welfare and ensuring your horse is receiving the best possible care, whilst in training or spelling. The same applies upon retirement of your horse from racing. Your responsibility for the horse’s welfare does not cease following its final race. Off the Track does not have a facility where we physically take in your retired racehorse and care for it when retired from racing, that is the racing owner’s responsibility. Our aim is to promote them as the ideal equestrian mount and increase the demand for them in the horse community when retired from racing. We can however assist you to find a home for your retired racehorse (see below), but until a suitable home is found, the racing owner is responsible for the daily wellbeing, health & welfare of their horse.

• a spell – this is the owner’s responsibility • medical treatment and/or time to recover from injury – this is the owner’s responsibility • to be sent to a Retrainer for education to prepare the horse for a smooth transition to the equestrian world or as a pleasure horse – this is the owner’s responsibility

www.cavalletti.com.au/horses-for-sale/discipline:25 We also help promote your horse by forwarding the advertisement of your horse to the Pony Club Association of WA, Adult Riding Clubs Association of WA, Equestrian Australia, Riding for the Disabled and other equestrian clubs such as Polocrosse WA, Endurance Riding Association of WA etc. & via our social media outlets. We are contacted daily by equestrian riders wishing to find a suitable mount off the track for equestrian or pleasure purposes and we have a very high success rate with finding retired racehorses suitable homes. A retired racehorse is a lot more attractable to an equestrian buyer if it does not have an existing injury. If your horse is retired with injury, please consider spelling the horse and only attempt to find a new home for the horse once it is sound. A retired racehorse is also more attractable and likely to find a good home more easily if the purchaser knows the horse’s history, whether it be good, bad or ugly. Don’t tell white lies. A prospective purchaser is a lot more likely to consider buying a horse from you for equestrian purposes if they are confident you are telling the truth. Disclosing all information on the horse can only benefit the horse and new owner in the future. Off the Track have a number of Acknowledged Retrainers listed on our website who can help you educate your horse for equestrian purposes once retired from racing. Sending a horse to a Retrainer, even for just a couple of weeks post racing will enhance its chances of finding a good home sooner. www.rwwa.com.au/home/our-community/retrainers. html If you require assistance from Off the Track to find your retired racehorse a suitable career and new home post racing, we want to help you. You will need to forward a good photo of the horse, together with as much detail as you can……warts and all! For the long term health and success of the horse we need to be completely honest when

advertising & giving details about the horse to potential new owners. All horses are to be afforded the best possible care until a suitable home is found. Horses will NOT be advertised as 'FREE TO GOOD HOME'. All horses will have a selling price and all selling prices are negotiable. Please forward photos and information of retired racehorses seeking new homes & careers to:Via email - sharon.joyce@rwwa.com.au Text message – 0438 746 487 Some recent horses moved onto equestrian careers due to direct communication between owners and Off the Track in the past month include: Bonny Express, Carillo, Uno Valentino, Eyesinger, Aggie Blue, God I Love You, Kingston Moa, Waikato Duke, Cape Revival, Our Dezzie Mac, Travel In Time, Mr Aviator, Meteor Rules, Woodstack and Unnamed Scandal Keeper. All are now on their way to enjoying their lives post racing. WHEN RETIRING A HORSE FROM RACING PLEASE ENSURE YOU DO THE FOLLOWING: Complete a Stable Return Thoroughbred Racing Office.

with

RWWA’s

Complete a Retirement of Racehorse Form and forward to Racing Australia. Completion of this form will register the horse as ‘retired’ in the national racing system. If selling or gifting a retired racehorse to a new owner, ensure you create a ‘receipt of sale’ displaying the horse’s name and/or brands and new owner’s contact details. Doing all of the above will ensure you are no longer liable for any damages if the horse was to harm or injury anybody or property after leaving your care, or if the horse itself was to come to any harm after leaving your care. If you need any assistance with rehoming your retired racehorse please contact Off the Track via any of the contacts below.

Best Presented Colt of the Sale - Lot 439 & Barry Warwick

TOP EFFORTS BY THE GIRLS AND THE LOCALS WA bred 3yo filly Red Hot Roxy looks to have a bright future, with a terrific 2yo season behind her and now adding the 3yo Sales Classic to her list. She now has 2 starts for 2 wins this season, and over $110,000 in her kitty. In February, 3yo filly Maczaffair won the $50,000 Daintys Daughter Classic and then just missed the $50,000 Caduceus Club Classic. With the WA Oaks coming up in May it looks like it will be a very competitive race, with several other fillies also showing their talents. Speaking of talent, Bettor Be Supreme (who has won 11 of her 15 WA starts), Major Reality and Ideal Alice won for the third successive month, which speaks for itself in terms of the ability of these mares. And a top effort from Bettors Gem to win the Village Kid Sprint. Some blistering speed by early 2yos this year with 3 of the progeny of WA sire Advance Attack registering wins, including Cott Beach in 1:54.9. Another very speedy effort was from Tenniele Erin (Sportswriter) who ran 1:55.3 in her first up win. Tenniele Erin was passed in for $12,000 at last year’s WA Yearling Sale – didn’t everyone miss that one! Westbreds won over 55% of the races in both January and February, higher than the 3 previous years. Let’s see if we can keep that up! With the 2 and 3yo races hotting up and Westbred Bonuses available it’s a good time of the year for your Westbred.

WA APG YEARLING SALE Congratulations to all the purchasers who have taken home a new yearling, and to vendors and APG for their efforts. With this being the first year under the APG banner, it was pleasing to see the overall average for the sale was up on last year, with the fillies increasing by over $2,000 on the 2016 result and the colts showing a slight increase. This is indicative of the quality of the lots offered, racing opportunities for fillies and increasing difficulties for the colts. As was the case last year, a Mach Three yearling was the top priced colt, at $46,000, going to Sytka Pty Ltd. The top price in the Sale was $57,500, with two fillies having the honour. Annie Belton claimed a Bettors Delight half sister to her 2014 purchase Dior Mia More, and Dennis Roche was successful with the Sportswriter-Royal Tour filly. Congratulations to Patrician Park and KTC Bloodstock for topping the Sale results.

12 APRIL/MAY- RACING AHEAD

The WASBA sponsored parade moved to a new shady location, with a good turnout watching the parade of two thirds of the yearlings in the catalogue. Once again the yearlings were beautifully presented and a credit to the vendors. Thanks once again to the Standardbred Pleasure & Performance Horse Association of WA (SPPHAWA) for assisting with the Parade, to our two judges Hayley Moore and Tracey Cosham, the best dressed handler Chris Feast (again!) and to our compere John Coffey. Winners of the two random draw $250 WASBA incentives for vendors were John Rogers and Colleen Lindsay. Toplining the parade, the 5 best fillies presented were Lot 428 by Betterthancheddar, 466 by Sportswriter (the equal top price in the Sale) and 485 by Western Terror (all KTC Bloodstock), 478 by Mr Feelgood (for Bill Hayes) and 484 by Alta Christiano (Graham and Wendy Gilbert). The top 5 colts presented were Lot 412 by Mach Three (who was also the top priced colt), 481 by Four Starzzz Shark and 509 by Auckland Reactor (all KTC Bloodstock for Kevin and Annette Charles), 439 by Betterthancheddar (Barry and Julie Warwick), and 504 by Sportswriter (Colleen Lindsay). Taking the double, Betterthancheddar won both the best presented filly and colt (Lots 428 and 439).

This year, with the support of Alabar through one of the Alabar Stallions in our Stallion Tender, we are providing funds via Budget Stockfeeds to Tammy Horn Walker and Nadia Bishop to support their rehoming efforts. Congratulations Tammy and Nadia.

2017 YEARLING SALES By Wayne Currall

The Australian Pacing Gold Yearling Sale held at Belmont Park Racecourse in early March proved a great success. With some of Western Australia’s best maternal families represented, the action in the sales ring was spirited. Bucking the national trend, fillies led the way in Perth with three of the top four lots members of the "fairer sex". In fact, two fillies tied as the highest priced purchases of the day, attracting bids of $57,500.

He said it was the sign of a healthy harness racing industry. "The vendors gave us a very warm reception and were lovely people to deal with," Boydell said. "I was delighted with the level of presentation of the horses at the sales, and was really pleased to see the pride that the vendors had in their product. "I was really pleased to get the support of RWWA and Barry Hamilton to help us promote the Westbred scheme. "It is a fantastic scheme and certainly acts to the appeal of the WA Sales Yearlings. "RWWA deserve a lot of credit for the scheme and we look forward to working with them to promote it both locally and interstate." 

Lot 416 – a daughter of Bettors Delight and I Am Special - was bought by Banjup trainer Annie Belton, while Lot 466 – by Sportswriter from Royal Tour - matched that amount when knocked down to Boyanup trainer Dennis Roche. Overall, the fillies averaged $17,000, a massive 25 per cent higher than the colts at $13,693. On the subject of colts, the top male was a son of Mach Three and Here For The Money – currently known as Lot 412 and bought by Sytka Pty Ltd for $46,000. In what was a solid debut for APG in Perth, the sales average was $15,110, an increase of 11 per cent on last year’s WA Sale. Belton, together with husband Colin, has tasted success at the Perth sales in the past. In 2012 she outlaid $17,000 for a colt by Grinfromeartoear out of Crystal Journey.

L416 Filly Bettors Delight PatricianPark $57,500

The horse, who raced as Mister Jadore, went on to win the 2013 Group 1 $100,000 Clipsal Sales Classic for colts and geldings. Mister Jadore has since tasted victory on 12 occasions and been placed 10 times in his 27 starts for more than $267,000 in stakes - a great investment on the Belton family's $17,000 outlay. Prominent owner Robert Watson paid $40,000 for Lot 470 - a filly by Mach Three out of Shes Innocent. Other notable purchases included a $30,000 outlay by Busselton trainer Barry Howlett for Lot 432, a filly by Grinfromeartoear out of Lil Blue Eyes, leading trainer Greg Bond who parted with $30,000 to secure Lot 504, a colt by Sportswriter out of Centrefold Angel, Shardon Lodge's $30,000 outlay to secure Lot 509, a colt by Auckland Reactor out of Courage On Fire, and the $34,000 spent by Kyle Jeavons for Lot 511, a colt by Art Major out of Dontgetmeruffled. Australian Pacing Gold's general manager David Boydell said he was thrilled with the number of people who attended the sales in Perth.
