Racing Department staff will be cracking down on trainers who have not scratched by the prescribed deadlines, and trainers risk the chance of having their horses scratched by the racing department if their horses are in multiple races.

NON-CLAIMING RACES Following an application from the Western Australian Jockeys’ Association, the Thoroughbred Racing Consultative Group supported a trial of additional non-claiming races being programmed at metropolitan and provincial venues.

As of April 1st 2015, the following races will now be non-claiming races: 2YO Set Weights & Penalties 2YO Maidens 3YO Maidens 2YO & 3YO Maidens (only run at Provincial B Venues) RTG 60-72 Handicaps NORTHAM STAKES Owners and Trainers are advised that the Northam Stakes [LR] 1100m to be run on Sunday 3 May 2015, will be run under set-weight and penalties conditions. The change in conditions is intended to make this race more attractive to the higher rated horses racing through the winter feature events at Belmont Park. Penalties are only applicable for wins in races from 1 February 2013. Trainers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new conditions for the race.

It is intended to run several other listed races under set-weight and penalties conditions in 2015/16.

BELMONT SPRINT It should also be noted that the Belmont Sprint [G3] 1400m is now run at standard weight-for-age instead of the handicap conditions applicable in previous years. This provides a series of five feature races for the older horses through the late autumn/winter period.

winter racing heats up for maley Article by Ernie Manning Trainer Ashley Maley has recently achieved city prominence with Ascot winners, but he will be among a significant exodus of horsemen heading north from city racing next month to tackle Broome Turf Club’s $1 million winter season.

Maley, whose talented gallopers Red Publisher and Megg’s Currency have recorded impressive metropolitan victories, plans to prepare a smart team which is ready for the opening meeting at Broome on Saturday, May 30.

His ultimate aim on the North-West mission is to have winning prospects in the $100,000 XXXX Gold Broome Cup (2200m) during August.

“Broome has become a notable racing destination, with good stake money, ideal training facilities and a warm winter climate,” Maley said.

“Our stable will be represented by proven performers and promising newcomers, however they are sure to face tough opposition.”

Doug Milner, the popular long-term Broome Turf Club manager, confirmed Ashley’s views on the potential strength of Broome’s season.

“We expect that all stables in Broome will be full for our racing season,” Doug said. “We have more than 140 horses booked into the oncourse stabling complex.”

Doug said total prize money for the season, including unplaced subsidies, would be $1,070,000.

“The BTC committee and management are looking forward to an exciting and enjoyable season,” he said.

Broome programs will follow on June 13 and 20, then the Derby Cup Day fixture will be held on June 27.

Racing at Broome will be conducted on July 4, 11 and 24.

Trainers will strive to have gallopers at peak fitness for Broome’s three feature meetings in August.

“The Kimberley Cup on August 1 precedes Ladies’ Day on Tuesday, August 11 and the Broome Cup on Saturday, August 15.” Doug said. “The Kimberley Cup has a $40,000 stake and will be run over 2020 metres.”

“Ladies’ Day is highlighted by the Mungrup Stud Fillies and Mares’ Classic, a $25,000 race over 1300 metres.”

Doug said prestigious events would be major attractions at the cup meeting, which traditionally draws nation-wide attention.

Cup day will also feature the $20,000 Allure Pearl Classic (1300m) and the $40,000 Broome Carpet, Paint and Tile Centre Broome Sprint (1300m).

Substantial stake money will be also be on offer during early meetings at Broome and Derby.

It is easy to see why Ashley Maley, who won four races within 10 days during February, and rival trainers will have gallopers primed for success from day one of the Kimberley season.

There will be an $18,000 race over 1100m at Broome on May 30 and the XXXX Gold Derby Cup (1800m) also has an $18,000 stake.

“It is anticipated our opening meeting, to be run in the WA Day long weekend, will attract almost 4000 colourful and enthusiastic patrons.

Trainers know that one of the main keys to success at Kimberley Rounds is the need to race gallopers who will adapt well to the Broome and Derby courses.

“Broome racing followers, along with visitors from surrounding Kimberley areas and the Pilbara, will be keen to get back to the race track, after the lengthy break between Broome Turf Club seasons.

The 46-year-old Ashley Maley, with experience of having won at Broome’s past three carnivals, is optimistic he will start the right type of horses to figure prominently there in winter.

“Ladies’ Day and the cup meeting, both in August, draw our biggest crowds.”

He won at Broome with Thinking Thunder in 2012.

Listing the proposed program for Pearl Coast Racing this year, Doug said Broome would conduct nine meetings and there would be two fixtures at Derby.

“There could be changes or cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances, but we have a set of 2015 race dates which have been approved,” Doug said.

The first Derby meeting will be run on June 6, a week after Broome’s opening.

Luck’s Elusive and Ambers Cove were Broome winners in 2013 for Ashley.

Last year, he won at Broome with Luck’s Elusive (twice), Secret Charm and News Flash. Adding to Ashley’s Kimberley success in 2014 was Yocto, who won at Derby.

Ashley said five-year-old Yocto, a son of former super star Lonhro, was in line for another journey to Broome next month.

He stylishly notched two Geraldton victories at consecutive starts in February.

Winter racing heats up for Maley Melbourne jockey Nathan Stanley rode Yocto to win on February 5 and Perth apprentice Jake Casey was aboard the gelding in his success 10 days later.

Yocto won two Victorian provincial races before a transfer to the Maley stable in 2013.

“Nathan scored a win on Yocto at Geelong in 2013 and was also aboard him when he won at Derby last June,” Ashley said.

“I arranged for Nathan to ride Yocto at Geraldton on February 5. He completed a stable double, also riding Musketalife to win for me that day.”

Stanley did not stay long in WA after the Geraldton win. He was a Moonee Valley runner-up next day on Override.

The jockey’s commitment to Override was rewarded when he won with him at Moonee Valley on March 9.

“Nathan told me after the February 5 win that Yocto felt much improved since he had previously ridden him,” Ashley said.

“The horse should be a top proposition at Broome’s season this year.”

There is a strong chance Stanley will also be at the Kimbeley carnival again.

He has ridden there in each of the past four winters, winning 26 races at Broome and six at Derby.

“Broome racing’s great atmosphere keeps attracting trainers, jockeys, horses’ connections and racing fans to return there,” Ashley said.

“There’s good oncourse stabling and horses can be worked on the nearby beach or swum.

“Warm weather helps create a friendly winter environment and there is a lot of comradeship between the racing fraternity.

“We have an ideal place for training,” Ashley said. “Our horses relax and blossom here. It’s only 500 metres from the beach.

“Horses are walked, as part of their exercise regimes, to the beach through bush.

“We have long stretches of clear shoreline on which to give horses working gallops near the water’s edge. They also enjoy wading.

“It’s generally a 45-minute circuit in riding horses to beach work and returning to the stable.”

Matthew Harris, Robin and Gail Humberston, and Kevin and Jill de Grussa have ownership shares in a number of Ashley’s gallopers.

The Maley team has won with Push To Pass, Our Saxon Flyer and Cognac Blue, in addition to Red Publisher, Megg’s Currency, Yocto, Thinking Thunder, Luck’s Elusive, Ambers Cove, Secret Charm, News Flash and Musketalife.

“Thinking Thunder, by Stormy’s Son, was the first galloper I trained for TAB meetings,” Ashley said. “William Pike rode him to win for me at Northam in 2011.

“Push To Pass won at Northam last October and at Bunbury in January.”

Red Publisher finished third at Ascot in his two-year-old debut and was then a runner-up there. The three-year-old won over 1200m at Ascot as a $2.40 favourite last December.

Megg’s Currency scored her second Ascot win when successful over 1600m in February.

Musketalife was having her first start after a transfer to Maley when winning at Geraldton.

Ashley is well credentialled to tackle the outer country racing circuit.

“Luck’s Elusive, who began her career with trainer Peter Moody in Melbourne, scored a winning hat-trick at Port Hedland and Broome last year,” Ashley said. “She’s still racing well.

He was born at a WA wheatbelt town Kondinin, and also spent some of his younger years at Kulin, Calingiri and Moora.

Pinjarra runner-up Jack To A King and Via Ring A Rah, a Northam placegetter at her debut, have shown promise for the Maley team.

From the age of 17, he was a livestock buyer at Great Southern sales for a major company.

Also in the stable are juveniles by Casino Prince, Nadeem, Danehill Express and Monaco Consul.

Later, Ashley was a Wesfarmers territory manager at Merredin and Moora.

“The youngsters have shown promise, and won’t be rushed,” Ashley said.

“The Broome Turf Club operates efficiently and stake money is attractive.”

Boosting his horse knowledge, he worked at Tony and Liz Freebairn’s Cheriton Stud in Gingin.

“Meantime, we’re very much looking forward to joining a lengthy list of trainers who are heading for the Broome carnival.” 

Ashley built an imposing record as a trainer on the “bush racing” circuit.

His star galloper was Pikey, who won 35 races from 37 starts. The horse was by former prominent New Zealand thoroughbred sire Pikehall.

Five Kulin Cup winners were trained by Ashley.

In Lancelin, he ran a hardware store for 15 years as well as becoming heavily involved as a valued contributor to community projects.

In addition to being a volunteer ambulance officer and fire fighter, Ashley was Lancelin’s shire councillor on the Gingin Shire.

He recently relinquished the hardware store, in order to concentrate on preparing a team of about 10 gallopers.

His spacious stable block is located close to Lancelin’s main business area.

MEDIA RELEASE AMENDMENTS TO RACE CONDITIONS The most recent meeting of the Thoroughbred Racing Consultative Group considered a paper from the RWWA Manager Thoroughbred Racing, proposing a number of important changes to the conditions of thoroughbred races in Western Australia.

Non-Claiming Races In response to an application from the Western Australian Jockeys’ Association (WAJA), an increase in the number of races which apprentices are not permitted to claim their allowance was supported. The WAJA contends that the minimum top-weight requirement of 59kg under the Australian Rules of Racing has increased the propensity for Trainers to engage an apprentice rider. Consequently, this is having an impact on the sustainability of the senior riding group in Western Australia.

A trial will commence from 1 April 2015 of apprentice riders not being permitted to claim their allowance in the following race types: • All Set Weight or Set Weight and Penalty Races at metropolitan meetings; • Rating 60-72 Handicap races at metropolitan midweek meetings; • Two-Years-Old or Three-Years-Old maiden races at provincial meetings.

In proposing the above policy, RWWA was conscious of identifying race types which are expected to least impact Owners and Trainers having the ability to make use of apprentice riders on horses weighted at the higher end of the handicap scale. Accordingly, apprentice riders will continue to be permitted to claim their allowance in all handicap races, with the exception of rating 60-72 races conducted at midweek metropolitan meetings. The proliferation of Rating 60+ handicap races on race programmes is expected to provide sufficient alternate opportunities for horses within that racing band.

Similarly, two-years-old and three-years-old maiden races in the provincial area were identified as the maximum weight applicable is 57kg.

Stakeholder feedback, together with impact on field sizes and wagering turnover, will be closely monitored.

Open Age Listed Races – Set Weight & Penalties Conditions A trial of set weight and penalties conditions being implemented on some open listed races will commence with the running of the Northam Stakes [LR] on 3 May 2015. The Northam Stakes was identified as a suitable race to commence the trial given it leads into a sequence of four weight-for-age races over the winter season.

The below conditions will be applicable to listed races run under set weight and penalties conditions.

For races run in the first half of the season (1 August to 31 January) penalties will be calculated on wins in all races run since 1 August of the season before last, ie for a race run in August 2015 penalties will be based on all wins in races on or after 1 August 2013.

For races run in the second half of the season (1 February to 31 July) penalties will be calculated on wins in all races run since 1 February of the season before last, ie for a race run in February 2016 penalties will be based on all wins in races on or after 1 February 2014.

Further races will be identified to be trialled under the above conditions as part of the race programming process for 2015/16 and stakeholders advised accordingly.

Three-Years-Old Listed Races A review of the weight structure was undertaken for three-years-old listed races, which have been run under set-weight and penalties conditions since 1 August 2010.

The conditions in place are considered to be working well, however a reduction in the applicable base weights proposed by the Manager Thoroughbred Racing was supported. From 1 August 2015, the base weight will be decreased by 1kg to 55kg and 53kg for colts/geldings and fillies respectively. Under the race conditions, the only horse to be allocated 53kg will be a filly having not won a prime metropolitan race.

In accordance with current policy, in this situation the rider will be able to make application to Stewards prior to closing of final acceptances to ride over-weight.

The above change will limit the maximum weight allocated in a 3yo listed race to 60kg.

Three-Years-Old Open Races A further change was recommended to provide for all open three-years-old races to carry set weight and penalties conditions, from the commencement of the new racing season on 1 August 2015.

The requirement of the Australian Rules of Racing for the Handicapper to issue a set of weights with a minimum top-weight of 59kg creates significant inconsistency in handicapping between metropolitan three-years-old open races. It is not uncommon for the Handicapper to be required to allocate a horse having won only one race the minimum top-weight of 59kg. This is a constant cause of frustration to the Handicapper and stakeholders alike.

The following set weight and penalties conditions will apply: Base Weight:

No horse in the race will be allocated less than 54kg and consistent with the policy applied in two-years-old races, a minimum top-weight of 57.0kg will apply.

Three-years-old races run at midweek metropolitan and provincial meetings will continue to be run under handicap conditions.

The changes detailed above are expected to address many of the concerns expressed by stakeholders around the handicapping system in Western Australia. Stakeholder workshops will be scheduled in the coming months.

Off the Track together with Touchstone Farm were excited to offer the first of 3 coaching clinics hosted at the State Equestrian Centre Brigadoon on Saturday 28th February.

Coaching Clinics are open to those horses and riders requiring assistance with retraining and educating their ex racehorse for equestrian or pleasure purposes. Clinics are offered to both Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds.

Some of WA’s most popular, qualified and competent coaches are available to assist in groundwork, flatwork, gridwork, show jumping and cross country. Guest speakers, including vets, farriers, horse dentists, massage therapists etc, provide interesting and informative displays and talks during the lunch time break.

Touchstone Farm have offered their support to Off the Track since the program’s inception and we value this support immensely.

Other racing and horse related organisations which have recently offered their support and generously supplied merchandise and feed as giveaways at the clinics are BioJohn and Thompson & Redwood Feeds. Heart arrhythmias in the race horse The heart is a muscle with inherent electrical activity acting in a coordinated regular fashion to pump blood around the body. A fit racehorse’s resting heart rate is typically between 28 and 40 beats per minute, and at maximal exercise can reach rates of up to 240 beats per minute. To achieve this phenomenal increase, a complex pathway of electrical signals in the heart lead to rapid and coordinated contraction of the atria (the top of the heart) and ventricles (the bottom of the heart). In addition, signals from the nervous system, as well as from reflexes within the cardiovascular system, can affect the heart rate and force of contraction. If the electrical signal is disturbed through electrolyte imbalances, structural heart diseases, certain drugs and heart muscle inflammation (myocarditis) this can lead to the heart beating irregularly; this is referred to as an arrhythmia. Thus, identification and treatment of any underlying diseases is as important as treating the arrhythmia itself.

Heart rate monitors have been used to determine exercising heart rates for many years. Importantly, it should be noted that maximal heart rate reached during exercise is not necessarily indicative of racing performance. In fact, maximal heart rate is similar between fit and unfit horses. Of more significance is the exercise intensity at a given speed or workload. Horses with lower heart rates at a given exercise intensity are considered more cardiovascularly fit than those with higher heart rates exercising at a similar intensity. How quickly the heart rate drops or returns to normal post-exercise is also a good indicator of fitness.

Fitting the telemetric ECG

Electrocardiography (ECG) is used to assess the heart electrical activity and rhythm. In other species, it can be used to assess heart size as well as localised damage to heart muscle however, due to the complexity of the electrical circuitry in the horse’s heart, only rhythm is usually assessed in horses. ECGs can be easily performed ‘stall-side’ and is done so when the horse is standing still.

Radiotelemetric ECGs which operate via a Bluetooth connection have been available for several years and have revolutionised our understanding of exercise-associated arrhythmias as they can record the hearts electrical activity while the horse is exercising. Frequently, in post-race veterinary examinations, cardiac arrhythmias are detected. While it may be assumed that these are atrial fibrillation (discussed later), without ECG confirmation at the time, other arrhythmias may be overlooked. However, with the advent of telemetry, horses can be exercised as normal (including while ridden) to maximal intensity, while the heart rhythm can be viewed real-time and recorded for detailed analysis thereafter. This technology is currently available at The Equine Centre at Murdoch.

There are some arrhythmias that are considered incidental, and have no impact on performance. Of more concern are those arrhythmias which cause a significant reduction in racing performance. The most common is of these is atrial fibrillation. It arises in horses mostly because of the large heart size and low resting heart rate. This leads to an abnormal electrical signal circling in the atria.

As a result, the atrial muscle contracts in a haphazard pattern (i.e. fibrillation; figure 2). At rest, atrial fibrillation does not tend to result in obvious clinical abnormalities (this is in contrast to ventricular fibrillation, which is usually fatal). This is because the major function of the atria is to increase filling of the ventricles. At rest, this extra filling is not required as the low heart rate allows gravity-led filling of the ventricles. At maximal heart rates, without coordinated atrial contraction, there is not enough time for gravity alone to fill the ventricles. As a result, cardiac output is reduced, leading to poor performance.

The most common form of atrial fibrillation is paroxysmal. This means that the arrhythmia spontaneously resolves, usually within 24-48 hours. In many cases, an arrhythmia is suspected based on post-race veterinary examination but ECG examination the next day, for example, reveals no abnormalities.

Persistent atrial fibrillation is that which continues beyond this period. These arrhythmias usually require treatment. In addition, it is imperative that they

Heart arrhythmias in the race horse are treated soon after arrhythmia development. If treatment is not performed within three months, the prognosis for successful conversion reduces significantly. This occurs due to electrical and structural modelling within the heart. Thereafter, the arrhythmia becomes permanent which means the arrhythmia remains whether or not treatment is attempted.

While there is often no underlying cause in atrial fibrillation (in contrast to humans and other animals), there are several important causes that may require further investigation. There is an anecdotal link between electrolyte abnormalities and atrial fibrillation, particularly the paroxysmal form. Specifically, whole body deficits in potassium secondary to increased potassium loss in the urine may lead to this condition. These losses may arise spontaneously or can be secondary to sodium bicarbonate or Frusemide (Lasix™) administration, for example. Oral supplementation is usually effective at reducing the risk of recurrence.

More recently, with the advent of telemetry, characterisation of arrhythmias during and post-exercise has come into focus. During exercise the incidence of short-lived arrhythmias (such as atrial premature beats) may be more frequent than previously thought. It is also known that during the immediate post-exercise period, arrhythmias are relatively common. This is due to the parasympathetic (‘rest and digest’) arm of the nervous system trying to slow down the heart to resting rates, and the sympathetic (‘fight or flight’) arm simultaneously trying to increase the heart rate and is considered to be a normal finding in most horses. If more persistent arrhythmias are noted post-exercise, then further diagnostics of the cardiovascular system are warranted.

Unexpected death in racehorses where no other cause can be determined is sometimes attributed to cardiac arrhythmias. Most commonly, this is assumed to be ventricular fibrillation, where the ventricles do not contract in an organised manner and so blood flow stops. However, without evidence of ECG abnormalities, this remains speculative.

There is a need to perform more research in the area of exercise-related arrhythmias. Particularly, information is required on what arrhythmias may be considered ‘normal’ during exercise and how often they occur. In addition, performance-limiting arrhythmias that do not persist can be detected, and further diagnostics or treatments performed as appropriate. Finally, with the ever-increasing versatility of mobile phones, an iPhone application and matching case (AliveCor) is available which has been shown to be useful ‘stall-side’ to detect arrhythmias without expensive equipment.
