INVERSION PARADISE STREET TROPHY WINNER
FROM THE RACING MANAGER NORTHAM SEASON DEFERRED In a continuous effort to ensure the best levels of care are provided to racing greyhounds in WA, Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) in October 2019 engaged Professor David Eager from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) to conduct a review of WA’s three greyhound tracks, as was being undertaken nationally. RWWA has received preliminary advice with respect to potential track adjustments that would improve existing key measures. Such adjustments would serve to elevate existing standards, which potentially may further reduce already low injury rates.
FINISH ON LURE RACE MEETING RECOMMENCEMENT Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak Finish On Lure meetings were being conducted at Cannington on Wednesday nights on a fortnightly rotation. This fortnightly rotation is scheduled to recommence at the Cannington Wednesday 22 July meeting. The following upcoming meetings will be scheduled as Finish On Lure meetings:
RWWA, with the full cooperation of Greyhounds WA and the industry, is immediately undertaking further planning and consultation to apply available enhancements.

STAKES AND BONUSES SET TO RETURN TO 100% During the COVID-19 period greyhound racing has been consolidated to two venues, with Cannington and Mandurah, therefore this current arrangement will be continued until further notice. With Monday racing being conducted at Cannington and the Sunday venue alternating between Mandurah and Cannington.
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) is pleased to advise that prizemoney and bonuses across all three codes of racing will be returned to 100% effective from 1 August 2020.
Upon receipt of the UTS report RWWA will provide further details to the industry.
Since Monday 6 April, in addition to reductions in its own cost base, RWWA made the decision to reduce prizemoney and associated breeding bonuses by 20% to assist in mitigating the impact of declining income as a result of COVID-19.
DALE CUP SERIES AT CANNINGTON The postponed Dale Cup series has been rescheduled and the heats will now be run on Monday 20 July, with the final the week after.
WA DISTANCE & WA SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIPS This year the National Finals have been cancelled, however we will still be running our usual qualifying state races. Traditionally to be able to run in this series there have been strict domiciled requirements that need to be adhered to. The decision has been made to partially relax these this year whilst still maintaining the spirit of the race having WA residing greyhounds representing the state.
RWWA Chairman Jeff Ovens said that the decision was a difficult, yet necessary one, to ensure the industry’s future sustainability. “Racing has been fortunate to continue operating throughout the COVID-19 period, allowing RWWA to actively support the continuation of racing at 80% of stakes levels at a time where our income was impacted by at least 50%,” Mr Ovens said. “We recognise how difficult the situation has been for our racing participants. However, this decision was made to mitigate some of the impacts from COVID-19, to ensure the long-term survival of the WA racing industry.”
Therefore too qualify to compete in either series a WA greyhound must have been domiciled in WA before 1 July.
“RWWA’s cost mitigating measures, along with the robust recovery of the WA TAB business with the re-opening of the retail network, and strong receipts from the Racing Bets Levy has enabled RWWA to return stakes and bonuses to their full pre-COVID-19 levels within just four months.”
As per last year the WA Distance will be run as a one off final, with the field selected by a grading panel. This will be run on Saturday 8 August.
“With the upcoming breeding season in the equine codes it’s important that we give the WA racing industry certainty and confidence as we move into the 2020/21 season.”
The WA Sprint series will be a heat and final event, with the heats run on Saturday 8 August and the final conducted on Thursday 13 August at Cannington as part of the SKY Channel feature production night.
The reinstatement of prizemoney and bonuses to 100% will return the equivalent of over $20 million annually to the WA racing industry. Since 16 March 2020, RWWA has implemented a number of strict biosecurity measures to ensure the continuation of racing in the State, protecting the 24,000 people who are employed or participate in the industry.
FROM THE RACING MANAGER WEEKEND SCRATCHING PHONE DIVERT ISSUES As you would be aware the Telstra Mobile issue is still ongoing for the weekend scratching phone divert. RWWA IT Services has been in dialogue with Telstra and the Phone system provider however at this stage the issue is yet to be rectified. If you cannot get through on your Telstra Mobile device, in the first instance try and use your landline or another networks mobile phone. As a last resort leave the full scratching details on the nomination recording line.
QUALIFYING TRIALS All Qualifying Trials are conducted prior to the first race at the respective race meetings, unless otherwise advertised. The number of Qualifying Trials drawn may vary depending on the number of races drawn and the number of spare kennel bays. Should nomination numbers warrant, consideration may be given to conducting trials on the backup days of Thursday (Mandurah) and Saturday (Cannington) utilizing surplus nominations. Alternatively a stand-alone Qualifying Trial session may be considered.
