An Interview with eL Seed Written by Racine Burney on September 21, 2020

He uses Arabic calligraphy and a distinctive style to spread messages of peace, unity, and to underline the commonalities of human existence. He doesn’t stick to a canvas and, instead, paints on walls of buildings and we can find his works in random and different places around the world, always adding to the beauty of their settings. Currently, his working space is in Al Serkal Avenue in Dubai and is a clear reflection of the work that he does in public.

eL Seed is a French-Tunisian street artist who works in a style of calligraphy and street art that he calls calligraffiti. He grew up in France and, while he knew Tunisian dialect, felt out of touch with his roots which is what pushed him into this style of self-expression. He founded a new link between Arabic calligraphy and street art by breaking rules and experimenting with new ideas. People are usually able to recognize his work due to the colors and the way the letters are drawn. He also uses his work to speak out politically by using poetry from poets such as Mahmoud Darwish.

An Interview with eL Seed

The current technological advancements in the field of type design have positively influenced the production of Arabic fonts. Some experts claim that designing Arabic fonts is now as easy as designing Latin fonts.

However, we still can’t see rapid growth in Arabic font development. Do you agree or disagree with this observation? Can you elaborate?

I think there is a huge development – when you look at the work of Huda AbiFarès with the typo matchmaking – I think there has been a huge progress in the last ten years, and you can see that there’s a real desire to develop it. I know some calligraphers, such as Wissam Shawkat, who develop their own fonts from calligraphy when getting into typography which is actually a bit difficult, I think. I definitely think that there’s a big movement in the last ten years or so with the fact that you can see more and more people coming into calligraphy. Calligraphy is the sister of typography, you know, so socially there is a bigger difference so I wouldn’t say that I agree.

If you imagine the Arabic type design school of your dreams, how would it function? What would be the main focus of the school? And who would teach there?

and I think it’s so cheesy. And, honestly, I started working with the idea of looking at the rules of the logo and what do I need to put and stuff… In the end, it came from an artwork and with the artwork I created and the way I wrote Tunisia… it can become a font later on. So, like I said, you can teach technique, but you can’t create typography, it’s an art form.

That’s a big question. For me, typography is still an art form in a certain way because you can give techniques to people, but you cannot create originality.

For example, I didn’t train as an artist, so I believe that you can teach art techniques in art school but it’s not because you went to art school that you can be an artist. So that’s the way I see it. Yes, it might be interesting to teach people the rules of typography and say, “okay, this works” or “this doesn’t work,” but I’m more… I wouldn’t say anti-academic, but I like when there are no rules. So, I’m not a calligrapher and, more recently, I was asked to design the new logo of the ministry of tourism of Tunisia. So when I was in Tunisia, there was a national debate about it, with people saying “why are they asking an artist? it should be a communication agency.” And the minister actually wanted, for the first time, to have a Tunisian person do the logo of Tunisia because usually it’s a branding company that tries to create a typo for Tunisia that’s so orientalist where they have two dots on top of the “i” to make it look as Arabic

What are the main characteristics of Arabic fonts in demand right now?

And why?

I think Arabic script has a universal beauty, you know, that you don’t need to translate.

That even if you don’t read Arabic, just the shape of the letter appeals to people and creates an emotion. When you look at Latin alphabet like the letter N with the 90-degree angle – you don’t find that in nature. But when you look at the waw (‫)و‬, it’s round and you can find that in nature.

It becomes more appealing to people and speaks to their soul, that’s how I look at it.

Arabic calligraphy legacy is significantly diverse and inspiring. How can we use this broad heritage today? Which calligraphy styles are waiting to be reinterpreted through typography? Why do you think young type designers shy away from pushing the boundaries of calligraphic rules?

As I said as an artist, I’m not a calligrapher. I don’t know any rules of calligraphy and that’s what brought me here. And, actually, when I started writing Arabic, I didn’t know there were rules.

People today know for my style and maybe in a hundred years people will say “Oh eL Seed used to make his alef (‫ )أ‬this way and his waw (‫ )و‬used to be this way and the meem (‫ )م‬like that.” And maybe people will create Al Khat eL Seedy (‫الخط‬ ‫ )السيدي‬and people will put rules behind my work and that will be for me. I won’t be alive, but it will be for me to know.

That people will say “No, there’s a rule, you can’t draw the meem like that and eL Seed used to make them this way.”

And I think sometimes people say it’s important to know the rules to break them and sometimes I think maybe if you don’t know the rules, that’s good as well. I don’t know the rules, so I’m not breaking them, and that’s how I look at it. I think that Arabic script gives you so much freedom in treating the shapes and letters and we shouldn’t confine ourselves into the rules that have been established by people –

with all my respect to classic calligraphy. I think [young type designers] totally should [push boundaries]. I think they should look at it and think, “Okay, Khat Al Kufi is originally from Iraq from a city called Kufa, so the first guy who did it had some people who came to realize that the first person was doing it and making his alef in a certain way and they tried to put rules behind it.” So, I think this is what I’m saying: that we should know the rules or maybe not know the rules and try to get away from it. Why should we put rules to everything? that’s what I’m saying, and I think that typo should respect that. The difference between typo and calligraphy is that, with typography, you need to be able to read it, but with calligraphy, maybe you are allowed to decipher it, so the purpose is different.

Any recommendations to young graphic designers who are interested in expanding their knowledge in Arabic typography? Could you list five resources (books/websites/conferences)?

Okay advice – the first thing is knowing how to read Arabic, that’s the first step.

Because I know people who don’t know how to read Arabic and they don’t know the shape and the differences between the letters. Look at someone else’s work but then stop looking at someone else’s work, you know, so that you don’t get influenced and you don’t become a copy of somebody else. Then you get inspiration and you close your eyes. Being free from every single system and the rules is what fuels creativity. When you’re stuck in a room and people tell you “I can only do it this way or that way” doesn’t help. Five resources – the amazing work from the artist eL Seed – no, I’m joking – I think you should check out Huda’s typo matchmaking. I really can’t think of five resources because Huda, for me, is the best. There’s Wissam Shawkat, I think that’s important to look at, and Tariq Atrissi.

Then the fourth is your own inspiration.

You and what you have inside your soul – that is always the first part of inspiration: before you look at other people’s work, you should always look inside yourself for

I’ve been a fan of your work for a while and really enjoy seeing your projects and hearing about the connections you make with the people you work around. Is there anything specific that got you started in your interest for calligraffiti and what is your process when it comes to planning your projects?

At first it was about identity so I got into Arabic because I am originally Tunisian, born and raised in France, and I was lost with “I am French, I am Tunisian,” and I felt the need to go back to my roots and decided to learn how to read and write Arabic. I knew how to speak Tunisian dialect but didn’t know how to write and read and then when I started growing into calligraphy and into my art, I realized, actually, that I wouldn’t be able to do what I was doing if I was not French and Tunisian. So, actually, Arabic calligraphy allowed me to reconcile my identity, so I’m over this identity crisis and I wanted to show the beauty of Arabic calligraphy and that was my mission – that I would be the ambassador. And, after some time, today, Arabic calligraphy is just a tool that leads to an amazing human experience.

What I noticed is that, with art, you can enter any place around the world. Any place that people say you can’t go to, you can really enter with art. Like the project DMZ between North and South Korea, the slum of Cape Town, the Favela of Rio… and so now I think it’s a tool and,

yeah, that’s it, that’s how I look at it. And the process now is that, if I wanna speak about a subject, I try to find a place where I can talk about it. I go and visit and see if it fits what I want to do and that’s it, I do it. As simple as that. When I do a big mural, there’s no sketch, it’s freehand. I just know what I’m writing and there’s a lot of research beforehand to know what I’m going to writing. I always try to make sure that what I’m writing is relevant to the place where I’m writing but with universal dimensions so anyone around the world can relate to it. And then, on a big wall, I don’t sketch, I have the phrase and I know the shape I want to draw. In Egypt, I took a photo of the piece and drew it on paper and then we put it on photoshop and zoomed in. I used the breaks and windows and anything I could find on the picture as a refence for myself for the artwork and I traced on the building.

Then, with my team, we put in the color and that’s it.

What would you say has been your favorite project so far in your career?

I think that each one is special, you know.

I say that I collect moments and I have a huge collection of moments which means so many memories and people that I’ve met that enter my life because of my art and this is what I enjoy the most: that each project is differently unique so no project is better than another one.

The Bridge DMZ South Korea

Bridges are never built from one side; their very nature needs a step forward from both sides, so by extending the sculpture to the mid-point, he was intending to make a gesture of solidarity.

The project would remain unfinished until another art piece was installed in North Korea, thus making it the ultimate symbol of unification.

Bringing people, culture and generations together through Arabic calligraphy is what eL Seed aspires to achieve through every artwork. When the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art in Ansan, South Korea approached him to create an art piece in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea, the goal was to celebrate a call for reunification, unity and mutual respect. eL Seed’s initial plan was to build a bridge-like sculptural artwork that would curve upwards to a height of 20 meters, but stop at the midway point.

Myrelingues La Brumeuse Lyon

Lyon is known as the city of a thousand languages. Legend and myth swirl at its shores and it is a place where fiction and truth overlap. This spirit is captured in Myrelingues La Brumeuse, a historic novel written by Claude Le Marguet about the fictional birth of the silk industry in 16th century Lyon. Its title (translated approximately as A Thousand Misty Languages) has become indicative of the city itself. eL Seed chose the title of this novel for his project for the 14th edition of La Biennale De Lyon (2017) to convey the sense of mystery the city evokes.

The event, held under the title Floating Worlds (CHK), was a showcase of artworks “docked in the heart of a territory whose identity was partly shaped by the ubiquity of water in a city that rose from the waters and through which the Rhone and the Saone run”.

Louis Vuitton Foulard D’artiste

Autumn/winter 2013 season marked the first time that Louis Vuitton manufactured a product designed by an artist from the Middle East.

As part of its autumn/winter Foulard d’Artistes (‘Artists’ Scarves’) project, fashion powerhouse Louis Vuitton adopted a design by eL Seed on its emblematic giant silk square.

On his rendetition of the Louis Vuitton scarf, eL Seed illustrated four verses from a poem dubbed “Venice Carnival” by Taha Muhammad Ali. He gave an homage to the people of Venice, a tribute to the beauty and elegance of this city and its openness to the Eastern world.

In 2018, when Dubai Opera commissioned me for a sculpture, I wanted to pay tribute to Declaration and make my declaration of love permanent.

Jean Cocteau said: ‘There is no love.

There are only proofs of love’. Bringing my art into 3D was a way to allow it to materialize. The work is still tied to script, but by releasing the letter forms from one dimension I discovered new territories for expression that celebrate and elaborate my deep respect and love for this art.

Mirage Al-Ula

“If only the prime of the youth were new and old times come back, Buthayna, should my poetry spend a night in Wadi AlQura, then I’m happy.”

These words summarize the love the poet has for this region and I choose them to shed new emphasis on it to residents as well as visitors. The poetry offers a lens through which to witness the entire landscape. The words come from within the heart of the region and are, in many ways, an ode not only to one woman, but to nature itself. Mirage acts as a metaphor for the love Jameel had for Buthayna; a love so infinite, ever longing to be reached and grasped, like a Mirage.

In the 7th century, Jameel Bin Ma’mar was famous as a lover of the lady Buthayna from a neighboring tribe.

The story of their romance is that Buthayna’s people turn down Jameel’s marriage proposal because they feel Jameel’s verses praising their love have compromised her honor—merely saying that a woman loved a man was considered a blot on her honor in ancient Arab tribal society. Buthayna is forcibly married off to another man, but she and Jameel continue to be in love with each other, although they never consummate their love. Jamil continues to visit her at Wadi ‘l-Kura (Al Ula), and to complain in verse of his longing.

This mural in West Philadelphia is titled Soul of the Black Bottom. It comes from the neighbourhood’s history of demolition and displacement and quotes part of the semi-autobiographical text Darkwater: Voices from within the Veil by W.E.B. Du Bois. As a sociologist, Du Bois wrote the first sociological study on African American community in Philadelphia and as an author, he addressed civil and political rights through both fiction and non-fiction.

In 2012, when eL Seed painted the minaret of Jara Mosque in his hometown of Gabes, in the south of Tunisia, he never thought that an art piece would bring so much attention to his city

Initially, he was just looking for a wall in his hometown, and it happened that the minaret was built in 1994. And for 18 years, those 57 meters of concrete stayed grey. When he met the Imam of the Mosque for the first time, and he told him what he wanted to do, the Imam responded, “Thank God you finally came,”. For years he was waiting for somebody to do something on it. The most amazing thing about this imam is that he didn’t ask me anything — neither a sketch, or what I was going to write.

In his project Perception, eL Seed is questioning the level of judgment and misconception society can unconsciously have upon a community based on their differences.

In the neighborhood of Manshiyat Nasr in Cairo, the Coptic community of Zaraeeb collects the trash of the city for decades and developed the most efficient and highly profitable recycling system on a global level. Still, the place is perceived as dirty, marginalized and segregated.

‫كام قلت كفنان‪ ،‬أنا لست خطاطًا‪ .‬ال أعرف أي قواعد للخط وهذا ما‬ ‫أوصلني إىل هنا‪ .‬ويف الواقع‪ ،‬عندما بدأت يف كتابة اللغة العربية‪ ،‬مل‬ ‫أكن أعرف أن هناك قواعد‪ .‬يعرف الناس اليوم عن أسلويب ورمبا خالل‬ ‫مائة عام سيقول الناس «السيد كان يصنع ألفه (أ) بهذه الطريقة‬ ‫وكانت الواو (و) عىل هذا النحو وامليم (م) هكذا»‪ .‬ورمبا سيخلق‬ ‫الناس الخط السيدي وسيضع الناس قواعد وراء عميل وسيكون ذلك‬ ‫يل‪ .‬لن أكون عىل قيد الحياة‪ ،‬ولكن سيكون يل أن أعرف أن الناس‬ ‫ستقول «ال‪ ،‬هناك قاعدة‪ ،‬ال ميكنك رسم امليم بهذه الطريقة‪ ،‬وقد‬ ‫استخدم السيد يف صنعها هذه الطريقة‪ ».‬وأعتقد يف بعض األحيان أن‬ ‫الناس يقولون إنه من املهم معرفة القواعد لخرقها وأحيانًا أعتقد أنه‬ ‫رمبا إذا كنت ال تعرف القواعد‪ ،‬فهذا جيد أيضً ا‪ .‬أنا ال أعرف القواعد‪،‬‬ ‫لذلك أنا ال أخالفها‪ ،‬وهذه نظريت إليه‪ .‬أعتقد أن الكتابة العربية‬ ‫متنحك الكثري من الحرية يف التعامل مع األشكال والحروف وال ينبغي‬ ‫لنا أن نحرص أنفسنا يف القواعد التي وضعها الناس ‪ -‬مع كل احرتامي‬ ‫للخط الكالسييك‪ .‬أعتقد أن [املصممني الشباب] يجب عليهم متا ًما‬ ‫[دفع الحدود]‪ .‬أعتقد أنهم يجب أن ينظروا إليه ويفكروا‪« ،‬حس ًنا‪،‬‬ ‫خط الكويف هو يف األصل من العراق من مدينة تسمى الكوفة‪ ،‬لذا‬ ‫فإن الرجل األول الذي فعل ذلك كان لديه بعض األشخاص الذين‬ ‫أدركوا أن الشخص األول كان يفعل ذلك ويصنع األلف بطريقة معينة‬ ‫وحاولوا وضع القواعد وراءها «‪ .‬لذا‪ ،‬أعتقد أن هذا ما أقوله‪ :‬يجب‬ ‫أن نعرف القواعد أو رمبا ال نعرف القواعد ونحاول االبتعاد عنها‪ .‬ملاذا‬ ‫يجب أن نضع قواعد لكل يشء؟ هذا ما أقوله‪ ،‬وأعتقد أن الطباعة‬ ‫يجب أن تحرتم ذلك‪ .‬الفرق بني الخط املطبعي والخط هو أنه مع‬ ‫الطباعة‪ ،‬يجب أن تكون قاد ًرا عىل قراءته‪ ،‬ولكن مع الخط‪ ،‬رمبا‬ ‫يُسمح لك بفك تشفريه‪ ،‬وبالتايل فإن الغرض مختلف‪.‬‬

‫ما هي اخلصائص الرئيسية للخطوط العربية املطلوبة اآلن؟ وملاذا؟‬

‫أعتقد أن النص العريب له جامل عاملي‪ ،‬كام تعلمني‪ ،‬ال تحتاجني إىل‬ ‫ترجمته‪ .‬حيث أنه حتى لو ِ‬ ‫كنت ال تقرئني اللغة العربية‪ ،‬فإن شكل‬ ‫الحرف فقط يروق للناس ويخلق عاطفة‪ .‬عندما تنظرين إىل األبجدية‬ ‫الالتينية مثل الحرف ‪ N‬بزاوية ‪ 90‬درجة ‪ -‬ال تجدين ذلك يف الطبيعة‪.‬‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫وميكنك أن تجدي‬ ‫ولكن عندما تنظرين إىل الواو (و)‪ ،‬فهي مستديرة‬ ‫ذلك يف الطبيعة‪ .‬يصبح أكرث جاذبية للناس ويتحدث إىل أرواحهم‪،‬‬ ‫هكذا أنظر إليها‪.‬‬

‫هذا سؤال مهم‪ .‬بالنسبة يل‪ ،‬ال تزال الطباعة شكالً من أشكال الفن‬ ‫بطريقة معينة ألنه ميك ِنك إعطاء تقنيات للناس‪ ،‬لكن ال ميك ِنك إنشاء‬ ‫أصالة‪ .‬عىل سبيل املثال‪ ،‬أنا مل أتدرب كفنان‪ ،‬لذلك أعتقد أنه ميك ِنك‬ ‫تدريس تقنيات فنية يف مدرسة الفنون ولكن ليس ألن َِّك ذهبت إىل‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ميكنك أن تكوين فنانةً‪ .‬هذه هي الطريقة التي أراها‪.‬‬ ‫مدرسة الفنون‬ ‫نعم قد يكون من املثري لالهتامم تعليم األشخاص قواعد الطباعة‬ ‫والقول‪« ،‬حس ًنا‪ ،‬هذا يعمل» أو «هذا ال يعمل»‪ ،‬لكنني أنا أكرث ‪ ...‬لن‬ ‫أقول معا ٍد لألكادميية‪ ،‬لكني أحب عندما ال توجد قوانني‪ .‬لذلك‪ ،‬أنا‬ ‫لست خطاطًا‪ ،‬ويف اآلونة األخرية طُلب مني تصميم الشعار الجديد‬ ‫لوزارة السياحة التونسية‪ .‬لذلك عندما كنت يف تونس‪ ،‬كان هناك‬ ‫نقاش وطني حول ذلك‪ ،‬حيث قال الناس «ملاذا يسألون فنانًا؟ يجب‬ ‫أن تكون وكالة اتصاالت «‪ .‬وأراد الوزير بالفعل‪ ،‬وألول مرة‪ ،‬أن يقوم‬ ‫شخص تونيس بعمل شعار تونس ألنه عاد ًة ما تكون رشكة عالمات‬ ‫تجارية تحاول إنشاء خط طباعة لتونس يكون مسترشقًا جدًا حيث‬ ‫توجد نقطتان فوق حرف ال «‪ »i‬لجعلها تبدو عربية وأعتقد أنها‬ ‫مزيّفة للغاية‪ .‬وبرصاحة‪ ،‬بدأت العمل بفكرة النظر يف قواعد الشعار‬ ‫وما أحتاج إىل وضعه وما إىل ذلك ‪ ...‬يف النهاية‪ ،‬جاء من عمل فني‬ ‫ومن خالل العمل الفني الذي أنشأته والطريقة التي كتبت بها تونس‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ميكنك تعليم التقنية‪،‬‬ ‫‪ ...‬ميكن أن يصبح خطًا الحقًا‪ .‬لذا‪ ،‬كام قلت‪،‬‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ميكنك إنشاء الطباعة‪ ،‬إنها شكل من أشكال الفن‪.‬‬ ‫لكن ال‬

‫أثــرت التطــورات التكنولوجيــة احلاليــة فــي مجــال تصميــم اخلطــوط بشــكل إيجابــي علــى إنتــاج اخلطــوط العربيــة‪ .‬يدعــي بعــض اخلبــراء أن تصميــم اخلطــوط‬ ‫العربيــة أصبــح اآلن بنفــس ســهولة تصميــم اخلطــوط الالتينيــة‪ .‬ومــع ذلــك‪ ،‬مــا زلنــا ال نــرى منـ ًـوا سـر ًيعا فــي تطويــر اخلــط العربــي‪ .‬هــل توافــق علــى هــذه املالحظــة‬ ‫أم ال؟ هــل ميكنــك التعليــل؟‬

‫أعتقد أن هناك تطو ًرا هائالً ‪ -‬عندما تنظرين إىل عمل هدى أيب‬ ‫فارس مع ال (‪ - )typo matchmaking‬أعتقد أن هناك تقدم كبري‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫وميكنك أن ت َري أن هناك رغبة حقيقية يف‬ ‫يف السنوات العرش األخرية‪،‬‬ ‫تطويره‪ .‬أعرف بعض الخطاطني‪ ،‬مثل وِسام شوكت‪ ،‬الذين يطورون‬ ‫خطوطهم الخاصة من الخط عند الدخول يف أسلوب الطباعة‪ ،‬وهو‬ ‫يف الواقع صعب بعض اليشء‪ ،‬عىل ما أعتقد‪ .‬أعتقد بالتأكيد أن هناك‬ ‫حركة كبرية يف السنوات العرش املاضية أو نحو ذلك مع حقيقة أنه‬ ‫ميك ِنك رؤية املزيد واملزيد من الناس يأتون إىل فن الخط‪ .‬الخط‬ ‫هو أخت الطباعة‪ ،‬كام تعلمني‪ ،‬لذلك هناك فرق أكرب من الناحية‬ ‫االجتامعية لذلك لن أقول أنني أوافق‪.‬‬

‫السيد هو فنان شوارع تونيس فرنيس يعمل بأسلوب الخط وفن‬ ‫الشارع الذي يسميه «كاليغرافيتي»‪ .‬نشأ السيد يف فرنسا‪ ،‬ورغم‬ ‫معرفته باللهجة التونسية اال أن شعوره بأنه بعيد عن جذوره هو‬ ‫ما دفعه إىل هذا النمط يف التعبري عن الذات‪ .‬أسس رابطاً جديدًا‬ ‫بني الخط العريب وفن الشارع من خالل كرس القواعد وتجربة أفكار‬ ‫جديدة‪ .‬عادة ما يكون الناس قادرين عىل التعرف عىل عمله بسبب‬ ‫األلوان وطريقة رسم الحروف‪ .‬كام يستخدم السيد أعامله للتحدث‬ ‫سياسيًا باستخدام أشعار لشعراء مثل محمود درويش‪.‬‬

‫بأسلوب مميز لنرش رسائل السالم‬ ‫يستخدم السيد الخط العريب‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫والوحدة والتأكيد عىل القواسم املشرتكة بني البرش‪ .‬ال يقترص رسم‬ ‫السيد عىل اللوحات‪ ،‬بل عوضاً عن ذلك يقوم السيد بالرسم عىل‬ ‫جدران املباين‪ ،‬وميكننا أن نجد أعامله يف أماكن عشوائية ومختلفة‬ ‫حول العامل‪ ،‬مام يضيف دامئًا إىل جامل املكان‪ .‬تقع مساحة عمله‬ ‫حال ًيا يف شارع الرسكال يف ديب‪ ،‬وهو انعكاس واضح للعمل الذي يقوم‬ ‫به يف األماكن العامة‪.‬‬
