TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art is an annual black-tie gala and contemporary art auction held at the Richard Meier-designed Rachofsky House in Dallas, Texas. Thanks to the phenomenal support of the participating artists, dealers, sponsors and patrons, TWO x TWO has raised over $35 million in its thirteen-year history in support of amfAR’s AIDS research initiatives and the Dallas Museum of Art’s contemporary art acquisition program and exhibitions.

TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art has evolved into a weeklong series of social events aimed at advancing the progress of amfAR and engaging the arts community in Dallas. TWO x TWO has become the largest fundraiser in the United States for amfAR. TWO x TWO is also the largest single annual source of funds for contemporary art acquisitions at the DMA, enabling the addition of over 120 major works of contemporary art to its permanent collection and helping to fund remarkable contemporary exhibitions. Richard Phillips TWO x TWO 2012 Honoree TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art takes great pleasure and pride in honoring Richard Phillips for his continued generosity and his commitment to the fight against AIDS.

Š Richard Phillips Studio

Born in Massachusetts in 1962, Richard Phillips lives and works in New York. He is known for his strikingly distinctive paintings. Drawn from found imagery, his work deals with the marketability of man, his wishes, ideas, actions, identity, sexuality, politics, and desires.

He translates these images into both drawings and paintings executed through a traditional process. In doing so, he makes use of the iconic quality of pictures, which the media and Art use daily – each according to its own agenda. His recent exhibition, Most Wanted at White Cube in London, for example, featured ten larger than life celebrity portraits set against red carpet step-and-repeat backdrops.

Perhaps more so than any other contemporary painter of his kind, Phillips’ imagery has achieved a level of pop recognition outside of the art world with fashion, media and film collaborations. He has contributed to the television show Gossip Girl, MAC Cosmetics, The Art Production Fund, and Visionaire. He recently appeared as a guest judge on Bravo’s new TV series Work of Art: The Next Great Artist.

Phillips has exhibited his work in many individual and group exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe, including important survey exhibitions and catalogues at Le Consortium, Dijon in 2004; Kunsteverin in Hamburg in 2002, and Kunsthalle Zurich in Zurich in 2000. His current exibition of paintings and film is on view at Gagosian Gallery in New York. He is represented in public and private collections such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; the Denver Museum, CO; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami; UBS Paine Webber Art Collection, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Tate Modern, London; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, The Netherlands; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Recently Phillips has begun to explore filmmaking and photography as a means of moving beyond found imagery in his paintings. His images have appeared in Elle magazine and Lotus magazine, and will be featured in upcoming issues of Vogue China and Visionaire. He completed his first film entitled Lindsay Lohan in 2011. Phillips considers the film a “motion portrait” of the actress that “at once reveals an emotional awareness of her recent past and, in the most positive terms, expressed the limitless creative potential of her art joined with her unparalleled beauty.” The film premiered at the 2011 Venice Biennale in tandem with his second film, Sasha Grey. His third film will premiere at Art Basel’s Art Unlimited exhibition in Basel, Switzerland, this June.

As part of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art 2012, distinguished artist Richard Phillips will receive the amfAR Award of Excellence for Artistic Contributions to the Fight Against AIDS in recognition of his continuous support of amfAR’s programs. The presentation of this award will take place during a brunch on October 21, 2012, hosted by Amy and Vernon Faulconer, Cindy and Howard Rachofsky and Gagosian Gallery, to whom we offer sincere appreciation.

As part of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art 2012, distinguished artist Richard Phillips will receive the amfAR Award of Excellence for Artistic Contributions to the Fight Against AIDS in recognition of his generous support of this event.

The presentation of this annual award will take place during a brunch on Sunday, October 21, hosted by Amy and Vernon Faulconer, and Cindy and Howard Rachofsky at the grand opening of their new warehouse space. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, the auctioneer may reject the same and withdraw the article from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, s/he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, s/he may reject the advance.

On the fall of the auctioneer's hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes full risk and responsibility thereof (including without limitation damage to frames or glass covering the prints), (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price therefor before property can be released. All property shall be removed from the premises by the purchaser at his/her expense no later than three days following its sale and, if not so removed, will be sent by amfAR at the expense of the purchaser to a public warehouse for the account, risk and expense of the purchaser and such added charges will then be added to the purchase price of the object. 6. Deliveries outside of Texas may be subject to the tax of another state and, where a duty of collection is imposed by law, amfAR will require payment of all said taxes. A purchase price below or at fair market value is considered to represent the value of the property purchased and is, therefore, not deductible as a charitable contribution. For a purchase above fair market value, the amount above fair market value is considered tax deductible. All checks must be made payable to amfAR/DMA. 7. (a) Neither Sotheby’s nor amfAR is responsible for errors or omissions arising out of or resulting from order bids or bids transmitted by telephone, including without limitation, errors or omissions arriving from mechanical difficulties or failure. (b) Some lots may be offered for sale subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. The auctioneer may implement such reserve by bidding on behalf of amfAR. 8. Items in the Silent Auction may be bid for in-person or by proxy through an absentee bid.
