TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art is an annual black-tie gala and contemporary art auction held at the The Rachofsky House in Dallas, Texas. Thanks to the phenomenal support of the participating artists, dealers, sponsors, and patrons, TWO x TWO has raised over $75 million in its 19-year history in support of amfAR’s AIDS research initiatives and the Dallas Museum of Art’s contemporary art acquisitions and exhibitions.

TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art has evolved into a series of social events designed to highlight the efforts of amfAR and engage the arts community in Dallas. TWO x TWO has become the largest fundraiser in the United States for amfAR. TWO x TWO is also the largest single annual source of funds for contemporary art acquisitions at the DMA, enabling the addition of over 260 major works of contemporary art to its permanent collection and helping to fund remarkable contemporary exhibitions. It is the extraordinary generosity, passion, and dedication at the heart of this endeavor that ensure the continued success of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art. twoxtwo.org

amfAR, founded in 1985, is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. With the freedom and flexibility to respond quickly to emerging areas of scientific promise, amfAR plays a catalytic role in accelerating the pace of HIV/ AIDS research and achieving real breakthroughs.

Intensifying its research efforts, in 2014 amfAR launched the “Countdown to a Cure for AIDS,” a bold new initiative aimed at developing the scientific basis of a cure by 2020 and supported by a $100 million research investment strategy. The cornerstone of the strategy is the amfAR Institute for HIV Cure Research, established on World AIDS Day 2015 and based at the University of California, San Francisco. Since 1985, amfAR has invested more than $517 million in its programs and has awarded more than 3,300 grants to research teams worldwide. amfar.org

Established in 1903, the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) is among the 10 largest art museums in the country and is distinguished by its commitment to research, innovation, and public engagement. This year I have invited three friends to share in the fun of highlighting works in the 2018 auction: John Runyon, trusted art advisor and TWO x TWO ambassador, Tim Headington, ambitious collector and our 2018 gala chairman, and Katherine Brodbeck, The Nancy and Tim Hanley Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art. John, Tim, Katherine, and I each have our own icon to indicate our picks and we encourage you to take an extra look at our selected works: Howard’s Hidden Gems, John’s Under the Radar, Tim’s Collector’s Eye, and Katherine’s Curator’s Choice will be noted in the online and print catalogues and throughout the exhibition at The Rachofsky House.

The OWNitNOW bidding period begins on Friday, October 19, at 12 noon CST, and will close on Friday, October 26, at 12 noon CST. During that time period, the first bidder to place a bid at or above the full retail price wins the OWNitNOW work. Bids placed prior to 12 noon on Friday, October 19, will be considered simultaneous bids. If simultaneous and equal bids are placed, there will be a bid-off between only the highest bidders until a maximum bid wins. If a work sells in the OWNitNOW auction, it will be marked as “sold” during the remaining TWO x TWO events. For further details on how to place your bid, please email Megan Gratch, Auction Manager, at meg@rachofskyhouse.org.

On Friday, October 26, at 12 noon CST, if the work is still available, it goes into the silent auction under standard TWO x TWO bidding procedures. All auction winners, including OWNitNOW winners, must collect their items from The Rachofsky House on or before Tuesday, October 30, in accordance with the Conditions of Sale.

Dana Schutz (b. 1976, Livonia, Michigan) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Schutz’s paintings depict darkly humorous narratives, hypothetical situations and impossible physical feats, such as swimming while smoking and crying or a manically refracted self-exam. Vibrant and tactile, Schutz’s oddly compelling images simultaneously engage the unique capabilities of the medium while conjuring a world both urgent and harrowing.

Schutz’s solo exhibitions include Dana Schutz: Eating Atom Bombs at the Transformer Station, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland (2018); Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2017); Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (2015); Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover (2014); Hepworth Wakefield Museum, Wakefield, United Kingdom (2013); Miami Art Museum; Denver Art Museum (2012); Neuberger Museum in Purchase, New York (2011); Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin; Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Roverto, Italy (2010); and the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts (2006). bidding procedures YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE PRESENT AT THE OCTOBER 27 GALA TO BUY GREAT ART! Works in the silent and live auctions at the October 27 gala can be identified by lot number on the bid sheets hanging next to each piece at The Rachofsky House. To bid on an artwork in the silent auction, guests may enter their paddle number and bid amount, noting the required bidding increments. Any work, at amfAR and TWO x TWO’s discretion, is eligible to be included in the live auction during the gala dinner; works chosen as live auction items will be labeled as such no later than Friday, October 26, 2018.

If you are unable to attend TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art on Saturday, October 27, and would like to place a bid on a live or silent auction lot, you may complete the appropriate online absentee bidding form found on each auction lot webpage. A TWO x TWO auction representative can bid on your behalf up to your pre-set maximum bid. If the work is part of the live auction, you may also be on the phone with an auction representative to place your bids during the live auction.

Works in the OWNitNOW auction are accompanied by icons indicating they are part of the OWNitNOW pre-auction. These works will be for sale during the preview period from October 19 to October 26. (a) Neither the auctioneer nor amfAR assumes any risk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity of the authorship of any property offered at this auction (that is, the identity of the creator or the period, culture, source or origin, as the case may be, with which the creation of any property is identified). (b) ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD “AS IS” AND NEITHER THE AUCTIONEER NOR amfAR MAKES ANY REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND OR NATURE, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, WITH RESPECT TO THE PROPERTY, AND IN NO EVENT SHALL EITHER OF THEM BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CORRECTNESS OF ANY CATALOGUE OR NOTICES OR DESCRIPTIONS OF PROPERTY, OR BE DEEMED TO HAVE MADE ANY REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTY OF PHYSICAL CONDITION, SIZE, QUALITY, RARITY, IMPORTANCE, GENUINENESS, ATTRIBUTION, AUTHENTICITY, PROVENANCE, OR HISTORICAL RELEVANCE OF THE PROPERTY. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size and whether or not it has been repaired or restored.

2. Any property may be withdrawn by amfAR at any time before the actual sale without any liability therefor.

3. The auctioneer and amfAR reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser.

In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer and amfAR shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, amfAR’s sale records shall be conclusive in all respects.

4. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, s/he may reject the same and withdraw the article from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, s/he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, s/he may reject the advance.

5. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof (including without limitation damage to frames or glass covering the prints), (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price therefor or such part as amfAR may require. All property shall be removed from The Rachofsky House by the purchaser at his/her expense no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30, 2018. If not so removed, the property will be sent by amfAR at the expense of the purchaser to a public warehouse for the account, risk, and expense of the purchaser and such added charges will then be added to the purchase price of the object. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to amfAR by law, including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, amfAR at its option, may either (a) cancel the sale or (b) resell the property on three days notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any deficiency, plus all other charges due hereunder and incidental damages.

6. Deliveries outside of Texas may be subject to the tax of another state and, where a duty of collection is imposed by law, amfAR will require payment of all said taxes.

7. A purchase price above fair market value is eligible for deductibility as a charitable contribution. The final determination of fair market value is, for tax purposes, the responsibility of the purchaser.

8. All checks must be made payable to amfAR. 9. (a) Neither the auctioneer nor amfAR is responsible for errors or omissions arising out of or resulting from order bids or bids transmitted by telephone, including without limitation, errors or omissions arising from mechanical difficulties or failure. (b) Some lots may be offered for sale subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. The auctioneer may implement such reserve by bidding on behalf of amfAR. 10. Items in the Live and Silent Auctions will be subject to these Conditions of Sale. The amount of any bid must be equal to or exceed the required increment as indicated online or on the bid form and must be in round dollar amounts and on the provided increment. All signed bids are binding and successful bidders not present at the auction will be notified by phone or email no later than Monday, October 29, 2018.

11. These Conditions of Sale, as well as the purchaser’s and amfAR’s respective rights and obligations hereunder, shall be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the State of Texas. By bidding at an auction, whether present in person or by agent, order bid, telephone or other means, the purchaser shall be deemed to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state courts, and the federal courts sitting in the State of Texas.
