twoxtwo.org

TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art is an annual black-tie gala and contemporary art auction held at The Rachofsky House in Dallas, Texas. Thanks to the phenomenal support of the participating artists, dealers, sponsors, and patrons, TWO x TWO has raised over $100 million in its 22-year history in support of amfAR’s AIDS research initiatives and the Dallas Museum of Art’s contemporary art acquisitions and exhibitions.

TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art has evolved into a series of social events designed to highlight the efforts of amfAR and engage the arts community in Dallas. TWO x TWO has become the largest fundraiser in the United States for amfAR. TWO x TWO is also the largest single annual source of funds for contemporary art acquisitions at the DMA, enabling the addition of over 300 major works of contemporary art to its permanent collection and helping to fund remarkable contemporary exhibitions. It is the extraordinary generosity, passion, and dedication at the heart of this endeavor that ensure the continued success of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art.

PRESENTING

OWNitNOW

Dear Friends:

Here is your chance to OWN it NOW . This year I have invited five friends to share in the fun of highlighting works in the 2022 auction: John Runyon, trusted art advisor and TWO x TWO co-host; Katherine Brodbeck, The Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art; and three savvy and esteemed art advisors and friends who bring a wealth of knowledge and vigor to TWO x TWO: Benjamin Godsill, Adam Green, and Spencer Young. John, Katherine, Adam, Ben, Spencer, and I each have our own icon to indicate our picks and we encourage you to take an extra look at our selected works: Howard’s Hidden Gems , John’s Under the Radar , Katherine’s Curator’s Choice , Adam’s Medley , Spencer’s Nods , and Ben’s Visions . Each of our selections will be noted in the online and print auction catalogues and throughout the exhibition at The Rachofsky House.

The OWN it NOW bidding period begins on Thursday, October 6, 2022 , at 12 noon CST, and will close on Friday, October 21 , at 12 noon CST. During that time period, the first bidder to place a bid at or above the full retail price wins the OWN it NOW work. Bids placed prior to 12 noon on Monday the 6th will be considered simultaneous bids. If simultaneous and equal bids are placed, there will be a bid off between only the highest bidders until a maximum bid wins. If a work sells in the OWN it NOW auction, it will be marked as “sold” during the remaining TWO x TWO events. For further details on how to place your bid, please email Megan Gratch, Auction Manager, at meg@rachofskyhouse.org.

On Friday, October 21, at 12 noon CST, if the work is still available, it goes into the silent auction under standard TWO x TWO bidding procedures. All auction winners, including OWN it NOW winners, must collect their items from The Rachofsky House on or before Tuesday, October 25, in accordance with the Conditions of Sale. Remember that you don’t have to be present at TWO x TWO to OWN it NOW . More details on each of the OWN it NOW works are available at twoxtwo.org/catalogue.

Good luck!

RASHID JOHNSON

2022 Honoree

TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art takes great pleasure and pride in honoring Rashid Johnson for his generosity and commitment to the fight against AIDS.

Portrait of Rashid Johnson: Fredrik Nilsen Studio, courtesy of the artist and David Kordansky Gallery.

Rashid Johnson (b. 1977, Chicago) is recognized as one of the major voices of his generation, an artist who composes searing meditations on race and class while establishing an organic formal vocabulary that fuses a variety of sculptural and painterly traditions. Though he employs materials drawn from specific autobiographical contexts—including those related to African American intellectual and imaginative life—and though his practice had its beginnings in photography and conceptual art, Johnson is equally interested in testing the ability of abstract visual languages to communicate across cultural boundaries. The visceral experience of art, on formal terms, is therefore considered inseparable from the social matrix that gives rise to it. Johnson’s work is predicated upon moving freely between these two modes. The breadth and generosity of his vision has resulted in a wide range of twodimensional and three-dimensional objects, installations, videos, and performances.

Rashid Johnson was one of six artists commissioned by the Queens Museum, New York, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to create a site-specific, permanent installation for Delta Airlines’s new terminal at the LaGuardia Airport in Queens, New York. In 2021, Rashid Johnson presented a major solo exhibition at David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles, as well as large-scale artworks commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera. A major outdoor sculpture by Johnson was recently installed at Storm King Art Center, New Windsor, New York. Stage, Johnson’s interactive installation and sound work, is open through fall 2021 at MoMA PS1 in Queens, New York. Johnson has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions including Museo Tamayo, Mexico City (2019); Aspen Art Museum, Colorado (2019); Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City (2017), which traveled to the Milwaukee Art Museum (2017); Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow (2016); and The Drawing Center, New York (2015). Notable group exhibitions include Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America, New Museum, New York (2021); The Stomach and the Port, Liverpool Biennial, England (2021); Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2014); and ILLUMInations, International Pavilion, 54th Venice Biennale, Italy (2011). His work is in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. His first feature-length film, an adaptation of Richard Wright’s Native Son, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was released on HBO in 2019. Johnson lives and works in New York. As part of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art 2022, Rashid Johnson will receive the amfAR Award of Excellence for Artistic Contributions to the Fight Against AIDS in recognition of his generous support of amfAR’s programs. We thank David Kordansky Gallery and Hauser & Wirth for their support of Rashid’s career and their longtime support of TWO x TWO.

Without the support of the business community, this event would not be the spectacular success it is today. And finally, a project involving an auction of this magnitude is only possible because of the support of the artists. It is their extraordinary contributions this year and throughout the last two decades that have brought

unprecedented success to TWO x TWO. Their commitment to the fight against AIDS and to the development of the DMA’s Contemporary Art Program demonstrates the generosity of the human spirit and the power it can have to make significant and positive change in our lives. We are profoundly grateful for their exceptional goodwill, which is the foundation for the success of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art.

bidding procedures

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE PRESENT AT THE OCTOBER 22 GALA TO BUY GREAT ART!

Works in the silent and live auctions at the October 22nd gala can be identified by lot number on the bid sheets hung next to each piece at The Rachofsky House. To bid on an artwork in the silent auction, guests may enter their paddle number and bid amount, noting the required bidding increments. Any work, at amfAR and TWO x TWO’s discretion, is eligible to be included in the live auction during the gala dinner; works chosen as live auction items will be labeled as such no later than Friday, October 21, 2022.

If you are unable to attend TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art on Saturday, October 22, and would like to place a bid on a live or silent auction lot, you may complete the Absentee Bid Form and submit it by Friday, October 21. conditions of sale

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE WORKS IN THIS AUCTION HAVE BEEN DONATED TO amfAR AND THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART. IF THEY DO NOT FIND A PERMANENT HOME IN YOUR COLLECTION, WE ASK THAT YOU CONSIDER DONATING THEM TO A MUSEUM.

The property listed in the TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art catalogue and online at twoxtwo.org will be offered and sold by amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, herein known as amfAR, a 501(c)3 entity. Any questions should be directed to amfAR and not to the event sponsors nor auctioneer, who serves merely as auctioneer for amfAR in conducting the auction sale and participates on the following terms and conditions, as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the sale, which govern the sale of all the property offered at the auction:

1. (a) Neither the auctioneer nor amfAR assumes any risk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity of the authorship of any property offered at this auction (that is, the identity of the creator or the period, culture, source or origin, as the case may be, with which the creation of any property is identified).

(b) ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD “AS IS” AND NEITHER THE AUCTIONEER NOR amfAR MAKES ANY REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND OR NATURE, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, WITH RESPECT TO THE PROPERTY, AND IN NO EVENT SHALL EITHER OF THEM BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CORRECTNESS OF ANY CATALOGUE OR NOTICES OR DESCRIPTIONS OF PROPERTY, OR BE DEEMED TO HAVE MADE ANY REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTY OF PHYSICAL CONDITION, SIZE, QUALITY, RARITY, IMPORTANCE, GENUINENESS, ATTRIBUTION, AUTHENTICITY, PROVENANCE OR HISTORICAL RELEVANCE OF THE PROPERTY. No statement in any catalogue, notice or description or made at the sale, in any bill of sale invoice or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a representation or warranty or any assumption of liability. Neither the auctioneer nor amfAR makes any representation or warranty, expressed or implied, as to whether the purchaser acquires any reproduction rights in the property. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size and whether or not it has been repaired or restored.

2. Any property may be withdrawn by amfAR at any time before the actual sale without any liability therefor.

3. The auctioneer and amfAR reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer and amfAR shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, amfAR’s sale records shall be conclusive in all respects.

4. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, s/he may reject the same and withdraw the article from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, s/he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, s/he may reject the advance.

5. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof (including without limitation damage to

frames or glass covering the prints), (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price therefor or such part as amfAR may require. All property shall be removed from The Rachofsky House by the purchaser at his/her expense no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. If not so removed, the property will be sent by amfAR at the expense of the purchaser to a public warehouse for the account, risk, and expense of the purchaser and such added charges will then be added to the purchase price of the object. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to amfAR by law, including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, amfAR at its option, may either (a) cancel the sale or (b) resell the property on three days notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any deficiency, plus all other charges due hereunder and incidental damages.

6. Deliveries outside of Texas may be subject to the tax of another state and, where a duty of collection is imposed by law, amfAR will require payment of all said taxes.

7. A purchase price above fair market value is eligible for deductibility as a charitable contribution. The final determination of fair market value is, for tax purposes, the responsibility of the purchaser.

8. All checks must be made payable to amfAR. amfAR will accept cryptocurrency for the hammer price of all auction lots. Payments made in cryptocurrency must equal the amount of the hammer price in USD at the time the winning bid is accepted. If you are interested in paying with Bitcoin or Ethereum, and/or have any questions, please email crypto@amfar.org.

9. (a) Neither the auctioneer nor amfAR is responsible for errors or omissions arising out of or resulting from order bids or bids transmitted by telephone, including without limitation, errors or omissions arising from mechanical difficulties or failure.

(b) Some lots may be offered for sale subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. The auctioneer may implement such reserve by bidding on behalf of amfAR.

10. Items in the Live and Silent Auctions will be subject to these Conditions of Sale. The amount of any bid must be equal to or exceed the required increment as indicated online or on the bid form and must be in round dollar amounts and on the provided increment. All signed bids are binding and successful bidders not present at the auction will be notified by phone or email no later than Monday, October 24, 2022.

11. These Conditions of Sale, as well as the purchaser’s and amfAR’s respective rights and obligations hereunder, shall be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the State of Texas. By bidding at an auction, whether present in person or by agent, order bid, telephone or other means, the purchaser shall be deemed to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state courts, and the federal courts sitting in the State of Texas.
