Retirement homes have long been known to cause loneliness and isolation within residents of these homes. This thesis focuses on how designing for socialization can improve issues of isolation and increase socialization in residents to improve their overall quality of life. Research was collected from interviewing residents of an assisted care home, to create informed design decisions.
The end solution to this project was to create an assisted living home where residents have access to a variety of different social activities and areas where they can be alone or with family and friends. The spaces included are a dining room, interactive kitchen, family room, activity space, spirituality room and a library, all of which are on the first floor. Each space allows for user customization through the furniture, lighting and air temperature.
“CREATING AN ASSISTED CARE ENVIRONMENT WHERE ELDERLY CAN MAINTAIN THEIR DAILY SOCIAL HABITS WHILE RECEIVING THE CARE THEY NEED”
Site
The location of this building is 250 the Esplanade Street in Toronto, Ontario. The building is close to parks, schools, community centers, and local shops. The building is four floors and the scope of the project focuses on the first floor and the remaining upper floors are where the resident rooms will be located. The building is heavy timber construction and has structural brick exterior walls.
Materials
The materials that are used in the space are designed to be durable while providing comfort. The colour scheme that is being used is blues, natural brown and white tones. This gives the space a soft comfortable feeling especially when paired with greenery. Using a variety of materials such as woven textiles, vinyl and wood creates a range of textures that create sensory engagement within the users. Users who can connect to the space through the materials and finishes will overall feel more comfortable in the space.
Objective
Creating a functional and visually pleasing cat play structure, that goes outside the typical constraints of the product. Function is key to the success of this design and developing a thoughtful path of travel through the structure became the driving force behind it.
Outcome
Working with reclaimed stair treads and widely available framing materials the wood features were developed into a stepped structure that allows the cat to move through and play in the voids. The addition of the holographic acrylic panels reacted to the light levels in the room creating a constantly changing rainbow of light. These panels also created areas for the cat to hide and play.
The objective of this project was to develop a concept for a furniture piece. Through using innovative and functional design aspects, an interesting table was created. Experimentation was used to develop different materials to see how they could work within the project.
The end solution of this product did not meet the expected outcome and adjustments had to be made along the way. Due to inconsistencies in the quality of the material it was not strong enough to support the table top, so a wood frame was used with the paper product table top. The final table had a clear epoxy center with ceramic tiles placed at different levels within the epoxy to create a three-dimensional effect. Concept
