This project was envisioned as an innovative outdoor art gallery for this project near the Menil Drawing Institute and the Twombly Museum. While most of the space remains open-air, certain sections feature a protective roof, offering shelter for more delicate artworks and temporary shelter from the elements. Inspired by the architectural concepts of Steven Holl’s Storefront and The Cullen Sculpture Garden, the project emerged through a series of diagrammatic explorations. These experiments delved into various combinations of the precedent’s distinctive features and concepts. The objective was to craft a dynamic and interactive gallery to captivate visitors.
Inspired by Zumthor’s Atama Nomad Shelter project and influenced by a thorough analysis of Zumthor’s approach, this assignment delves into utilizing oblique strategies. By examining the precedent, I learned about his adept use of geometry to structure programs, generate “imperfect” forms, and incorporate natural patterns. The envisioned Menil Passage is strategically positioned opposite the Menil Drawing Institute, connecting W. Main St and Colquitt St. This project revolves around creating a fluid circulation system and a geometric program arrangement to explore a distinctive manifestation of imperfection through architecture.
Research indicates that recovery housing for unhoused individuals is more effective when it includes supportive services. This project prioritizes the well-being of its residents by integrating these essential services. The CLT (cross-laminated timber) ribs and structure create a sense of lightness, contributing to a delicate and inviting atmosphere. The upward curves of the ribs symbolize growth, transforming the building into a beacon of recovery. Lush vegetation will surround the buildings, providing privacy for sunken seating areas and shielding the structures from the surrounding urban environment.

Reimagening Columbus
Partnered project with Dameesha Hussain
This idea involves creating a center where visitors can acquire fresh historical perspectives and engage in critical analysis. History is often presented in a convenient or idealized manner, similar to the situation with the Columbus statue. The proposed design offers a platform for presenting history without embellishments – just the facts. This space would allow marginalized groups to voice their concerns regarding the inaccurate memorialization of specific individuals in society.

The vibrant fusion of local culture and public transportation.
Houston’s East Side is a vibrant cultural center that reflects its diverse population and historical ties to the port. However, the area faces challenges from nearby industrial zones, with many neglected or abandoned buildings visible along Harrisburg Boulevard. Among the issues are difficulties in crossing the street and unequal access to the Green Line rail stations.
This project proposes the creation of a flea market and transportation hub that honors the community’s rich heritage. It aims to provide an open and dynamic space that promotes commerce, culture, and convenience, all set against the backdrop of Harrisburg Boulevard. The building will also serve as a cooling area for individuals waiting for rail or bus services.
