Fun Facts 1. e film as made it a budget of only 5,274, an incredibly small sum for a modern movie, and as filmed in ust five weeks

4. At the time of the black knig t scene s ooting, they had run out of budget. The producer was running the camera and lighting alongside about t ree ot er people, and it took a week to shoot the scene.

2. The book scene was done to save money; Gilliam's wife turned the pages (shot in his living room) and Michael Palin's son Tom is the little baby.

3. The running joke of the knights riding around on invisible horses with the sound of the horses’ hooves clopping coming from their squires’ clapping coconuts together came from the fact that the group didn’t have enough money in the budget to afford actual horses. The group came up with the coconut idea from an old BBC radio practice of using coconut halves as sound effects for horses.

5. The catapulted cow was a toy from a railway set. Jones and Gilliam said they enjoyed the audience coming to terms with the scene and reali ing it asn t about violence, but rather attitude. No matter how much of t e guy is removed, e s still a belligerent, mad c aracter who won't give up.

7. The opening credits are so plain because t e se uence as done at t e end of filming and there was no budget left. The “Swedish” subtitles were written by Michael Palin; he used it as an opportunity to entertain the captive audience. en t e film opened at annes, t e subtitles got uge laug s and rig t at t e end of t e credits, t e film stopped and a bunc of firemen ran in to us er out t e audience. ecause of t e perfect concurrence of events, filmgoers t oug t it as all part of t e s o , but t ey ad been evacuated for a real bomb scare. fter t e t eater as deemed clear, the audience went back in and resumed watching.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail was mostly shot on location in Scotland, particularly around Doune Castle, Glen Coe, and the privately owned Castle Stalker.

The many castles seen throughout the film were mainly either Doune Castle shot from different angles or hanging miniatures.

During pre-production, Gilliam and Jones had scouted and secured a series of authentic medieval shooting locations throughout Scotland, but two weeks before production began the filmmakers found out that the National Trust had banned the comedy troupe from shooting in any national historical sites because,

according to Gilliam, “we wouldn't respect ‘the dignity of the fabric of the building,’”. Forced to scramble to find a place to shoot the movie, they secured two privately owned castles, Castle Stalker and Doune Castle, to shoot all of castle interiors and most of the exteriors.

Castle Aaargh is Castle Stalker, and the rest of the castles are actually Doune Castle from multiple angles. Just as the character of Patsy says, Camelot is only a model. It was a 12-foot high cutout of a castle that frequently fell over in the wind disrupting shots. Gilliam and Jones used forced perspective as a quick cheat during wide-angle shots to make it seem like an actual location.
