St. Benedict Parish and Preparatory School Dear Parishioners, Each year it is important for us to give a report to everyone how things are moving along, financially and in ministry. Our fiscal year runs from July 1st to June 30th of the following year. This past year was quite a different year for everyone in so many ways. It presented some serious challenges to everything we do and forced us to try to be innovative in our responses. This upcoming year promises to be even more challenging. As far as ministry goes, we still need to accomplish the work that Christ has set before us. No matter what circumstances the world finds itself in, we have a mission that must be done. This report contains some information on how we went about trying to accomplish the tasks that we know remain important for us. We could report on many more things, but this will give you an overview of how things are going. Finances are of course at the heart of how we are able to do the many ministries we have been called to accomplish. This past year, and certainly next year, have been and will be very challenging. You will see from our report where things are at and how we see them moving forward. Of course, we are taking some action to address needs as we see them. We will be doing more as we move forward. This pandemic is calling all of us to relook at what we are doing, and how we can and should be moving forward. We are also in “Renew My Church” which at this point will be looking at the structural questions of the Church in this area. Following this first phase we will then be looking much more closely at the Spiritual questions of renewal which is at the heart of what “Renew My Church” is all about. As always, if you have any questions please call or email me and I will try my best to answer you. Otherwise, please wear your masks, keep your hands clean, try not to touch your face, and stay healthy!

BROADCASTING LIGHT IN A TIME OF DARKNESS Bringing Christ to our Community via live-stream… BY JEREMY KIOLBASSA, DIRECTOR OF MUSIC AND LITURGY

The Beginning

To me, the past eight months have seemed to speed by while feeling like a lifetime all at once. I look back on the week of March 9th with a host of mixed emotions. For one, this was the last time that our parish choir was able to sing together. On Wednesday, March 11th the choir performed a sung vespers service for Lent. Together we chanted the Psalms, the first being Psalm 62. Today, one verse in particular resonates: “In God is my safety and glory, the rock of my strength. Take refuge in God, all you people. Trust him at all times.” In all honesty, I don’t remember singing that line. I had to go back to the breviary and re-read the words. Like so many little “pre-pandemic” moments, this single line of poetry floated by undetected, and only in hindsight can I truly appreciate its significance. Like most people at the time, we had no idea of the true scope of the impending pandemic, or what it would mean for our church. Rumors about “closing down for a couple weeks” really started to circulate on Monday, March 9th. I remember having a conversation with Fr. Steve where we discussed the possibility of livestreaming Sunday Mass, although at the time the idea still felt like speculation at best. The idea of closing down was just a rumor, after all. In reviewing my emails from that week, I found a message from Thursday, March 12th, saying “the Archdiocese of Chicago has not moved yet to cancellations.” Within 24 hours of this message, we got word that the schools would in fact close, and Masses would be suspended until further notice. It was at that moment that it became clear that we needed to figure out how to broadcast the weekend Mass, and fast. I spent the rest of Thursday intensely trying to figure out how to livestream video to our Facebook page, and researching live-stream apps (I think I downloaded five or six that day). We decided to broadcast from the school chapel, since it is a more intimate space and easier to control, especially when it comes to sound. We didn’t have any video equipment, and it seemed silly to purchase if we were in fact only going to do this for a couple weeks. I soon came across an app that enabled us to use multiple devices as cameras. For our first broadcast, we cobbled together all of the devices we could find. Our cameras and “control room” consisted of three iPhones and an iPad, propped up on miscellaneous furniture and books. We had managed to create a mini studio out of an unlikely hodgepodge of equipment. Despite the haste with which it was put together it all worked. We broadcast our first Mass on Saturday, March 14th, and have broadcast every day since then.

MARCH 2020

MARCH 27, 2020 In March 2020, St. Benedict Prep created an e-learning platform with live and pre-recorded instruction for over 670 students because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Expansion and Growing Pains In the weeks following our first broadcast, it started to become clear that we were going to be doing this for much longer than we anticipated. In late March, our efforts caught the attention of WTTW Chicago, and we were featured on a series called “Firsthand” which chronicles the local response to the pandemic. One of the camera men, after seeing our mismatched equipment, donated a set of professional tripods and lights that he wasn’t using. We also invested in some additional new tripods, a digital sound mixer, and swapped out our personal devices for a set of iPads from our school. Though by no means a professional set-up, our recording rig did start to look a bit more serious than when we had started. The greatest technical challenges came when we decided to move from the school chapel into the church for Holy Week. At first, things seemed to go smoothly. Holy Thursday and Good Friday seemed to go pretty well, aside from the odd glitch in one of the cameras. Saturday and Sunday, however, is when things headed south. Some of you might remember that the video feed from the Easter Vigil froze several times, and eventually just stopped altogether. Easter Sunday was even worse, and it was a matter of minutes before the stream was interrupted. Despite our earlier success, it began to become very clear that there was still work to be done, and that our little set up was not as reliable as we thought. Over the next few weeks our tech department worked to fix the problem. We upgraded the control device to a new iPad Pro, which increased the processing power. We added a second Wifi hotspot in the church to improve the connectivity of the devices, and added a hard-wired internet connection for the control device. All of these upgrades have greatly improved the reliability of the system, and we haven’t had any major issues with the equipment since making these upgrades. Despite all of the efforts to improve our broadcast system, it still has its limitations. For one, the cameras on the iPads are not very powerful. In order to have a clear video, they need to be right up on the altar. Even when they are close, the picture quality is not nearly as clear as we’d like it to be. Having iPads all over the altar is also impractical and distracting when people are attending Mass. Finally, though the outgoing broadcast is done through a hardwired connection, the cameras (iPads) still depend on WiFi to connect to one another. WiFi, by nature, will never be as reliable as a hardwired connection. Though it has served us well, our current setup is by no means a permanent solution.

The Future What has become apparent over the past seven months is the value of our live-streaming ministry in keeping our community connected. It is our hope to continue to broadcast Mass every day, and to make this a permanent ministry of the parish. Even when things get back to normal, what a blessing it would be to share celebrations with friends and family across the country. Grandma and Grandpa would be able to attend First Communion from their home in Arizona, and relatives in the Philippines could attend a baptism or wedding in real time. All of our parish concerts, presentations, and events would be able to be shared with friends across the globe. The possibilities are endless. If we plan to continue this ministry, we will need to invest in a system that is both reliable and non-invasive to our sacred space. The new system would include professional HD cameras, which will be almost invisible to the gathered assembly, and several pieces of dedicated video equipment that will allow us to control and produce professional-level broadcasts. The cost of the new broadcast system is about $40,000. If you are interested in donating to this endeavor, or would like to learn more about it, I encourage you to reach out. I would be happy to tell you more about it. As we move forward through these uncertain times, I revisit that line from Psalm 62: “Trust him at all times.” I recall the moments of uncertainty and I realize that, though often frustrating, each one has caused us to grow and improve. I know that you too have probably been challenged by the state of the world, but know that there is hope. If we trust in God, we realize that even the challenges he puts before us will help us to become the best version of ourselves.

RESPONDING BY TAKING STEPS TO PUT GOD’S LOVE FOR ALL INTO ACTION

BY KIM MCMILLAN, DIRECTOR OF YOUTH MINISTRY

As a response to the death of George

Floyd and the tension and awareness about racism his death illuminated, our parish held an evening of prayer and reflection. During the prayer service we were invited to look into our own hearts to eradicate our own racist ideas. After each person spent time looking into their own heart about where the sin of racism might be present, as a community of faith, we began conversations on Zoom. Each person in the Zoom meetings was invited to listen, empathize and become aware of the inconsistency in the treatment of people of color and called it what it is: racism. Then, St Benedict Parish began an anti-racism ministry whose mission is to help each person recognize their ability to change the culture and create Pathways Toward Peace. During the initial prayer service, Collins Hunter offered thoughts about our value as people of God and led a prayer and reflection to begin our journey toward recognizing the sin of racism within ourselves. Using the Bishops’ document about racism: Open Wide our Hearts, The Enduring Call to Love, we began a journey to become better people. As we read the document together we grew in understanding and began to recognize that we could not just accept racism as a part of our culture, anymore. The group continues to meet via Zoom twice a month. During the conversations we try to listen to each other with empathy and compassion with a desire to grow in knowledge and understanding about racism and its many forms. We have learned much about history, complacency, Saints, inclusion and subliminal racist behavior. As an offshoot of the Pathways toward Peace conversations a group of parents was moved to help other parents and families understand about racism, its presence in our world and its many forms. With the desire to empower parents with the tools to combat racist ideals, the Black Lives Matter: Family Rally for Racial Justice moved from an idea to a reality.

MAY 16, 2020 When planning began for the 2020 Gala, we were excited to be returning to the beautiful space at Rockwell on the River. But that was not to be during the pandemic and we knew the event had to move forward in some capacity. We had 3 weeks to plan, coordinate and pull off something that St. Ben’s had never done before - a virtual Gala.

6

Thank you goes to all those that donated to both the silent and live auction, purchased tickets and supported our teachers through teacher tickets...your generosity truly made a difference. We had far fewer auction items to offer this year as a result of the pandemic and ticket sales were able to bridge that gap.

On September 19th, St Benedict Parish held a rally for families and parishioners to stand together in solidarity against racism. Black Lives Matter: Family Rally for Racial Justice was a spirit filled afternoon that started in the St Benedict courtyard and finished on Irving Park Rd, in front of St Benedict Church. Parents Shalita Ativie and Mia Boayue from St.Benedict School organized and began the Rally. Shalita Ativie was the MC and welcomed everyone by beginning our event with the beautiful singing of My Country Tis of Thee. Mia Boayue shared how the invitation to participate in the Pathways to Peace conversations led her to contribute her experiences and insights to help our community grow. Fr. Steve led us in prayer and we reflected on the importance of faith and action (James 2:14-24). Both of these are necessary pieces in our discipleship. Alderman Matt Martin spoke to us about the importance of everyone’s contribution in our neighborhood. Ms. Gemo shared from “A Kid’s Book about Racism” by Jelani Memory, and led us in a few cheers. Families chalked messages of affirmation in the courtyard and then we moved in front of the church on Irving Park. During these same few months some of our high school students also felt drawn to work toward being more intentionally inclusive of people whose lives may put them on the margins of society. As of this time, these high school students have been working to raise awareness and inclusivity for people with disabilities, people of color, women’s rights, and people who suffer from mental illness. If you are a follower of St. Benedict’s Catholic Youth Ministry Instagram account, you have seen their influence in our story. You can take a look yourself on Instagram @stbencym. There are more areas that they are planning to highlight, so be on the lookout for their Inclusivity Mission. All high school aged students are invited to be a part of this ministry. Please email kmcmillan@stbenedict.com if you need more information. The sins of racism and intentional exclusion must be acknowledged and we are each called to take steps to recognize its presence in our lives. When we begin to see the systemic nature of these sins we can help each other become better at eliminating this injustice in our world. Let us continue to pray that all God’s creation is valued and treated with dignity as we people of faith take action.

The teachers also did a fabulous job with reinventing their treats to be Covid safe and marketing them with videos! Thank you also to all of our sponsors, without whom the evening would not have been possible. Finally, none of this would have been possible without the time and energy of our committee. Thank you all for your tireless commitment to a great cause! What a great evening May 16, 2020 turned out to be, and we are so thankful and blessed to be part of such an amazing community! Our goal for the Gala this year was to raise $150,000 for the operating budget and $30,000 for Fund A Need. We knew these goals were lofty especially in light of the hurdle not being in person presented, but we did it! The Virtual Gala 2020 raised $225,000 net of expenses and our contribution to the Build Our Future Fund. Specifically, $160k for the operating budget and $65k for Fund A Need for Tuition Assistance.

U. S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION ANNOUNCES ST. BENEDICT PREPARATORY SCHOOL AS 1 OF ONLY 50 PRIVATE SCHOOLS ON 2019 NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOLS LIST U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recognized 362 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2019. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. St. Benedict Preparatory School is one of only 50 nonpublic schools across the nation honored as an Exemplary High Performing School. “We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives,” said DeVos in a video message to the honorees. “As a National Blue Ribbon School, your school demonstrates what is possible when committed educators hold all students and staff to high standards and create vibrant, innovative cultures of teaching and learning.” The curriculum of St. Benedict Preparatory School (PreK to grade 8), is designed to be challenging, rigorous and advantageous to students as they progress into high school and beyond. This approach has proven effective evidenced by students’ superior academic test scores. St. Benedict students consistently exceeded national benchmarks on ACT Aspire Tests (in all categories, in all grades 3-8). St. Benedict students in 2019 also met or exceeded the Archdiocese of Chicago schools average in all areas at all grade levels. The coveted National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content. Now in its 38th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed recognition on more than 9,000 schools.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MS. RACHEL GEMO, RECIPIENT OF THE NCEA 2020 LEAD. LEARN. PROCLAIM AWARD! The National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) annually recognizes leadership and excellence in Catholic education through its Lead. Learn. Proclaim. Award. Our very own Ms. Gemo received it this year for her dedication, support and commitment to excellence in Catholic education. Ms. Gemo was selected from more than 150,000 teachers and administrators, as well as diocesan leaders and organizations dedicated to the nation’s Catholic schools. The LLP Award honors those whose ministry is Catholic school education and who have demonstrated a strong Catholic educational philosophy as well as exceptional efforts, devotion and achievements. “Just as the Catholic Church is the people and not the buildings, so are Catholic schools not just buildings, but communities of educators and students bound by faith,” said Kathy Mears, NCEA Interim President/CEO. “The LLP Award is to recognize those individuals and organizations whose dedication, faith, knowledge and skills fulfill the mission of Catholic education.” Today, thanks to Ms. Gemo’s leadership with the support of committed educators and staff, school families, parishioners, and alumni, St. Benedict continues to be a vibrant, inclusive Catholic school where students receive a personalized Catholic education to develop their God-given gifts.

Fr. Steve announces to the school children during Catholic School Week flag raising ceremony of Ms. Gemo’s recognition by the NCEA.

ST. BENEDICT PREP IS OPEN FOR LEARNING

BY RACHEL GEMO, HEAD OF PARISH SCHOOL

On Friday, March 13, 2020 the Archdiocese of Chicago announced that all of its Catholic schools were going to pivot to remote learning. This was a courageous decision made before any official state or city directive. COVID-19 was taking hold of the population and the health and safety of our students and staff needed to be safeguarded. Like schools across the country, St. Benedict Prep faced the challenge of creating an e-learning platform for over 670 students without much forewarning. After two days of teacher training, SBPS began teacher directed instruction with live and prerecorded videos in core content subjects and opportunities for exploration and enrichment beyond the core subjects. The weekly schedule also included virtual office hours, a daily physical education period, and a weekly virtual all-school Mass which was attended on Facebook by hundreds of school families, school children’s grandparents and parishioners. Faculty members such as Inclusion Facilitators, School Nurse, School Counselors and the Reading Specialist also supported students virtually as needed. Students sustained community in a virtual environment and learned important lessons about resiliency, cooperation, and social responsibility. St. Benedict Prep was in a great position to pivot to remote learning quickly and effectively. The parish school has been a oneto-one device school for grades 1-8 for two years (grades 6-8 have had student laptops since 2007). The school had switched to Office 365 two years ago which gave teachers a robust platform to deliver educational content while communicating with students in a virtual collaborative environment. Teachers were relatively experienced in using technology in the classroom. During remote learning, the school continued to focus on the 7C’s of a St. Benedict Education: collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creative innovation, relevant and rigorous content, confidence and Catholic identity. St. Benedict Prep was in the position to offer an engaging and developmentally appropriate virtual education during a national crisis. A late spring 2020 parent survey answered by over 400 parents indicated a 93% satisfaction rate for the SBPS remote learning program. By late June 2020, the Archdiocese of Chicago decided that Catholic schools would re-open using Covid-19-safe measures. The goal was to get students back into school – the research shows that this is the best thing for students. A majority of Chicago Catholic school parents indicated that they desired in person learning for their children. For two months, a team of almost 20 faculty and staff worked with administration to plan a safe reopening school plan. As CPS announced that it would go fully remote to begin the school year, the phone rang off the hook in our admissions office. St. Benedict Prep now has enrolled 655 students, 95% who are receiving in-person learning and 5% who are remote learners. We are now closed for enrollment for the current school year as we are protecting the safety of our students and teachers who are attending school in person. We are about to kick off our admissions and marketing season for the 2021-22 school year and anticipate great interest given the current state of education in Chicago. We have the capacity to open additional classrooms if we hit minimum enrollment for other cohorts and have the time to hire excellent staff. Anyone who is interested in learning more about St. Benedict Prep for their child(ren)’s education should contact our admissions office for more information. What does school look like in a pandemic? Each morning children line up, wearing masks, answering symptoms questions and have their temperatures taken. Before they enter the building, they receive a squirt of hand sanitizer. When the students enter the classroom, they receive one more squirt for good measure. Students will wash their hands several times throughout the day. Students are reminded that they need to stay apart from one another. Students are adjusting well. They can do what is expected. Through the summer, comments on social media suggested that kids can’t be safe or follow the rules or make it through a day with a mask on. Our children have proven resilient. Yes, they can do this! As of the time this article has been written, there have been no cases of Covid-19 that have originated from the school. All reported cases have originated outside of the school facilities. We look forward to continuing in-person learning if local authorities deem it is safe to do so. If needed, we are ready to pivot back to remote learning for all our students. We appreciate greatly the support and compliance of the school community. They have made all the difference in having consistent, safe, inperson learning.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION UPDATE

BY DANIEL HUGHES, DIRECTOR OF CATECHESIS

Due to the Covid 19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown and restrictions, the Religious Education Department was required to postpone and eventually reschedule Sacramental celebrations that were scheduled in the Spring of 2020. All meetings and gatherings were moved to the Zoom platform. This required the programing to become innovative and flexible in the process of guiding people to the Sacraments and a deeper relationship with Christ.

RCIA Our Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults process typically culminates at the Easter Vigil with the reception of the sacraments. When it was announced that the Easter Vigil was not taking place in the Church, special permission was granted by the Archdiocese of Chicago to have those celebrations outside of the time of the Vigil. On August 8th, 2020, a special Mass was held for the candidates to receive the Sacraments. 6 candidates completed their Sacraments with First Communion and Confirmation, and 2 Catechumens received Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation.

Religious Education Religious Education completed the school year virtually in March. As the pandemic and lockdown continued, the Archdiocese of Chicago announced guidelines for conducting Religious Education instruction virtually for the 2020-2021 school year. Program materials were changed for easy adaptability for e-learning.

Sacraments The First Communion and Confirmation celebrations that had been scheduled from March to May 2020 were postponed until the fall due to the pandemic. St. Benedict offered both outdoor and in-Church celebrations. 116 children received First Holy Communion and 73 children received Confirmation during September and October.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Children’s Liturgy of the Word adapted to the pandemic with Deacon Reyes posting video versions on the parish website.

SPRED Special Religious Development program helps families with children who have developmental disabilities to become prepared to participate in the liturgical life of their parish. Currently, 3 families with a total of 5 children participate in the program this year. A special Mass will be scheduled for the reception of their Sacraments in the near future.

Baptism In March, all scheduled Baptisms were postponed. The first Baptism inside the Church was performed at end of June. After another pause to allow weekend Masses to be carefully reopened to the public, Baptisms began weekly beginning July 12th. Baptismal preparation classes for parents were held online via Zoom.

ST. KATERI CENTER UPDATE 2020

BY JODY ROY, DIRECTOR OF ST. KATERI CENTER

Since the Covid-19 pandemic began in March, many people, including our Native Community, were profoundly impacted mentally, spiritually, and with financial hardships. The St. Kateri Center at St. Benedict Parish quickly adapted new ways of providing services and programming for the community. St. Kateri Center is a member of the Chicago American Indian Community Collaborative (CAICC), a network of 16 Native Organizations. The Center is dedicated to furthering diverse causes and the greater well-being of American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and First Nations people in the Chicago area through mutual aid, political support and partnerships. CAICC was awarded funding through the Chicago Community Covid-10 Response Funds. The organization provided over 90 Native American Families with financial assistance to help alleviate utility, rent, and medical bills. In addition, the CAICC was able to provide over 37 families with emergency food baskets in March. The American Indian Center and Ho-Chunk Chicago Branch Office also offered further resources to provide food baskets to our community on a weekly basis. Prerecorded Masses were posted on the center’s Facebook page and website in lieu of our scheduled masses. Deacon Bill Frere provided daily Gospel reflections and videos for Sunday’s Gospel reflection. St. Kateri Prayer Circles, Indigenous Women’s Healing Circle and youth workshops became virtual through the use of Zoom. This new format provided local members, as well as communities across the country and Canada, to participate. OTHER ST. KATERI CENTER HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS PAST YEAR INCLUDE: - Hosting the Fourth Annual Urban Native Education Virtual Conference with the theme “Indigenous Futures 2020: Connecting Our Histories Present and Beyond”, enabling global participation from New Zealand, Japan, and Canada. - Virtual graduation for 45 Native American graduates. - Delivery of 58 gift baskets to local elders and seniors. - Delivery of 32 flower and gift baskets for local elders and seniors. - Hosting a Back to School Drive-Thru event providing over 75 Native American students with backpacks full of school supplies. St. Kateri Center continues to work with CAICC in providing resources for our Native American Community. During this pandemic, we continue to pray for St. Kateri Tekakwitha’s intercession for healing in our troubled world.

JUNE 28, 2020

JULY 18/19, 2020 St. Benedict Parish hosted a “drive-by goodbye” celebration for Fr. Robert Pajor who was named pastor of St. Gerald Parish in Oak Lawn in July.

In-person public Masses resumed in July with attendees pre-registering, wearing masks, and maintaining social distance.

TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES 2020

BY LOUIS KARAGIANNES, DIRECTOR OF TECHNOLOGY

Computer Security Platform Upgrade As a community, we value technology as a true tool for inspiring and engaging learning activity. In the world of lockdowns and stay at home orders, it was the technology that we relied on to carry out some normalcy in the classroom experience. With every benefit technology has blessed us with, there have been equal negative consequences. Therefore, we have implemented a new initiative to advancing not only our network security from attack and hacking, but also our surveillance and protection of the children that use this technology. In years past we have used Forcepoint to secure our school and parish using “state of the art” infrastructure and “best in class” business protection. However, being best in class business protection was, in fact, Forcepoint’s biggest flaw. We are not just a business with employed adults, but instead have students who are more vulnerable to various negative and intrusive materials that unfortunately circle our world network. Our response to this was to invest in a new security platform from a company called Smoothwall. Smoothwall specializes in schools, supporting over ten thousand worldwide. They offer a security platform that not only protects kids from, bad websites, viruses, and malware both at home and at school; but also provides key log tracking, image detection, suicide prevention, and online predator detection. All these new features provided by Smoothwall allow for us to better understand what materials the kids are accessing daily, know when a student has ventured in a concerning direction, or if immediate action is required to prevent the unthinkable from occurring. Initiating Smoothwall was a difficult process. The events leading up to and throughout the Covid pandemic made the process all that more difficult and extended. However, we are pleased to announce that we are fully up and operational, functioning on all student devices anywhere and all the time. To build off Smoothwall, another initiative at St. Bens this year was the upgrade to our network cabling and phone system. With the school empty and minimal staff present, we were able to accomplish a lot. We successfully upgraded all the cabling in the entire school and Rectory, moving to high speed Cat6 cable, installed new racks, patch panels, switches, modem, and router. Our network is now rated to function 10 times faster than before, and support far more video material. This was seen as a must-have, with Teams and video calling being the backbone of education in a pandemic.

New Possibilities: Modern Phone and Public Address System Installed The upgrade was also crucial for being able to support a new phone system. We no longer function off the old school PRI in the church basement, but instead are fully migrated to the cloud. Now we have improved call quality, upgraded call attendants, voice conferencing, mobile phone application, and a solution that is in no need of physical maintenance going forward. However, the biggest advantage of our new phone system is that it also functions as our school-wide public address system, finally putting to rest our old and outdated PA. This not only gives us the flexibility to give clear and fast announcements, but also adds an extra layer of safety to be able to deliver messages to the school efficiently. We have been able to do all of this at little to no upfront cost, minimizing our overhead, and saving Forward In Our Faith funds for other more critical projects in the future.

SUMMER FACILITY UPDATE

BY RACHEL GEMO, HEAD OF PARISH SCHOOL

Electrical Upgrades

Thanks to our generous donors to the Forward In Our Faith Campaign, St. Benedict Prep had a new transformer installed this Summer. The new transformer will increase power throughout all the classrooms in the Lower School Building 1 allowing for air conditioning upgrades.

Air-Conditioning and Ventilation Upgrades One of the key components to hosting in-person learning in a pandemic is having adequate ventilation. This means that windows need to open and air-flow through the classroom is consistent. In order to improve air flow in classrooms, we added simple ventilation fans to push classroom air out of the building. With our electrical upgrades, all classrooms now have access to air conditioning as well. We will be fitting these air-conditioners with air sanitation devices this winter. This way, we will be able to clean the air circulating through the classroom when it isn’t practical to have all the windows open on cold days.

Locker Replacement Our 70 year old high school lockers on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Building 2 have been replaced with new ones for our middle school students. Once our maintenance crew removed the old lockers, little lost treasures were found that literally fell through the cracks and now see the light of day in 2020. Students began using the new lockers following social distancing guidelines this Fall. Thanks to our HSA and all our Fun Run 2019 donors for making it all possible.

OUR NEW OUTDOOR LEARNING SPACES Three new outdoor learning spaces are the newest additions to the St. Benedict Preparatory School campus. These three spaces, completed in November, were designed as a memorial to honor the lives of two special individuals and as an expression of gratitude for the St. Benedict Parish and Preparatory School community. Two areas along the perimeter of the preschool building give our youngest learners additional outdoor learning opportunities. In addition, the area on the west side of the Ackerman Center (corner of Irving Park and Bell) provides outdoor classroom space to support the school program. Design elements in all three spaces reflect the school’s mission and our Catholic faith. Thanks to a generous private donation, the three new areas are:

Children’s Sensory and Gross Motor Garden located on Byron Street Memorial Garden and Outdoor Classroom located on Bell Street Outdoor Classroom and Children’s Planting Garden located at Bell Street & Irving Park Rd A special blessing service and grand opening of these special spaces will take place later this year.

The making of the game wall began with pink foam boards and a CNC machine. A steel skeleton was welded, painted red, and suspended in the form for the concrete pour. Two weeks later, it journeyed to St. Benedict Prep for a careful, if sometimes precarious, but ultimately successful installation.

Starting out as a stack of red cedar and a few black locust stumps, this little family of elephants came to life on a farm near Madison, Wisconsin. With seat buckles on, they made the trip to Chicago and made a new home for themselves on Byron Street.

<

Less bright and whimsical than the Dr. Seuss themed site, the features of this garden are more subdued, natural, carefully landscaped, and contemplative. The many textures and colors of the stone work will bring this space to life.

<

Meandering honeycomb raised-bed planters draw the eye into this outdoor learning space along the north end of Bell Ave.

FORWARD IN OUR FAITH CAMPAIGN CONCLUSION SUMMARY

BY GEOFF PAUTSCH, DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

In July of 2015, our parish kicked off a five-year capital campaign known as Forward in Our Faith. Now at the campaign’s formal conclusion, our parish gives thanks for the generosity and support of the campaign whether it was through a pledge or gifts given through our Sunday offertory collection. The generosity of so many parishioners coming together helped to transform our parish infrastructure. What the parish was able to accomplish due to their generosity over the last 5 years is quite overwhelming. Thank you to all those who spent countless hours in preparation for the campaign. To the campaign leaders and those who made solicitations to your fellow parishioners, thank you for your dedication and enthusiasm. The fruits of their labors built excitement around the campaign and led the way for the campaign’s success. The parish appreciates your hard work and dedication. We would especially like to thank:

The parish leadership intends to keep the initial intention of Phase III to enhance the educational experience in our parish school. Since we no longer need to build an addition to the school, we will invest the remaining campaign funds in the parish school buildings. By doing this, we remain faithful to the original objective for Phase III. Obviously, we are experiencing unusual times, and therefore the parish is not going to rush into renovating any spaces without being thoughtful for the long-term in light of the pandemic. The meeting soliciting parish input in April 2020 will be rescheduled for a future time. Thank you to all those who fulfilled their pledges. For those still fulfilling their pledges, our hope is that you are inspired by all the work completed thus far, and that you will complete your pledge with the knowledge that the parish will use your gifts wisely.

OCTOBER 2020 Traditional spring sacrament celebrations were postponed until fall because of the Covid-19 pandemic. By combining outdoor and in-church celebrations over a two-month period, 73 young men and women were confirmed and 116 third graders received the Holy Eucharist for the first time.

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

BY GEOFF PAUTSCH, DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

While the world continues to be on edge, our faith gives us more than enough reason for courage. St. Benedict Parish continues to be here to serve you in an active and vibrant manner. Most recently, while still maintaining proper safety measures and social distancing, our church is open for Sunday Mass. We would be very happy to see you at Mass. These recent times have been difficult for everyone. There are so many unknowns that we all continue to face. However, there is one thing that we are sure of: we as a parish church are strong. Through all of this, we will not be held back from being “the Church.” Thank you to all those who have continued their generosity over the last six months. Thank you to all those who contributed online through GiveCentral, dropped off donations to the rectory office or participated in the Sunday offertory. Many of our parishioners increased or sustained their giving to the parish. While collections are far from the budgeted weekly amount of $13,250, the generosity of our parishioners has been gratefully received. Thank you for your faithfulness to the parish! Over the last several weeks and months, our parish and school administration, along with our maintenance team, have worked hard to limit our expenses in order to be the best stewards of the gifts with which the parish has been entrusted. Our utility usage, both natural gas and electricity, has dropped significantly. Back in April, after a thorough walk-through of the campus, many non-essential items were simply unplugged. Our third-party cleaning company finished cleaning the school in early April. In an effort to limit additional unnecessary expenditures, the contract with our third-party cleaning vendor was terminated, and a new contract was initiated before school started with the pandemic in mind. Re-evaluating our general office needs and nonessential liturgical expenses helped to lower our parish’s expenses. We know that these cost-cutting measures have helped make a significant impact on our financial health during the pandemic. Our parish applied for and received a Payroll Protection Program (PPP) loan in the amount of $1,168,000 in April 2020 which allowed for the parish and school to keep our employees financially whole. Many of our employees worked remotely during the shutdown period. This amount currently sits on our balance sheet as a loan until the parish goes through the loan forgiveness program in the next few months. Now that the PPP funds have been exhausted, our parish continues to review how to be the best steward of your gifts. However, since many other expenses continue as normal, the parish does rely heavily on your generosity to help keep the mission of the parish and school going strong for the short and long-term.

Church Income: Collections throughout the pandemic have remained at around 80% of our goal of $13,250 per week. Collections were the biggest factor in last year’s church deficit. There is a concern for this new fiscal year which started on July 1, 2020. Fundraising will be down due to Oktoberfest and Benfest being canceled, contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal are less (which affects our parish rebate), and miscellaneous income including stole fees for funerals, weddings, baptisms and Mass stipends are down with less participation. Fortunately, many of our expenses were down, and we hope to continue to keep them down. The parish will continue to look for ways to decrease its spending in personnel costs, utilities, deferred maintenance and day-to-day office needs. Assessments from the archdiocese and for property/casualty insurance, however, cannot be lowered.

School Every year, an audit of our tuition and fee collection occurs to ensure not only are we correctly billing families, but to make sure that we have an accurate procedure for budgeting and forecasting. The school continues to have a near 100% collection rate. This is a remarkable feat. Outside funding sources include scholarships received from the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship program. Withdrawals and refunds offered for our extended care program at the end of the school year affected the school’s income. Our largest expense is staffing. Appropriately staffing our school without sacrificing academic integrity is always difficult. Miscellaneous income includes a variety of items such as hospitality, campus ministry, admissions, advancement office, graduation, school nurse, guidance and athletic expenses. However, because of the pandemic, many of our expenses were down which helped to offset some of our income loss.

Extraordinary Last year, the parish completed a significant amount of capital projects largely from Forward in Our Faith which can be found on other pages in this annual report. The parish finished the last year of the capital campaign. As income dwindles for the campaign, our parish will see deficits in the extraordinary section as those funds are eventually spent.

Cash Balances Our cash balances remain strong largely due to the PPP loan received in April 2020. Our assets outweigh our liabilities. However, our restricted account balances continue to decline. The parish continues to be in a healthy position as we continue to look for ways to complete infrastructure upgrades to our aging campus.

Important Acknowledgements of Our Profound Gratitude Annual School Fund: Netted a record $213,517 (November 2019) Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, parishioners and friends that supported this important School Advisory Board appeal. This year’s challenge goal was $175,000 with initiatives to retain our teachers through leadership stipends. GALA: $167,765 (May 2020) net proceeds after Build our Future contribution and financial assistance Fund-A-Need ($68,447). This year’s “virtual” event was a great celebration for the entire family to celebrate our parish community. Thank you to Laura Burns, Isabelle Ryan, and Linda Wolf for their leadership and to their team of volunteers who pulled off another extraordinary event. Save the date for next year’s “virtual” gala on Saturday, April 17, 2021. BENFEST: $24,076 (July 2019) Proceeds from this annual summer festival in honor of our patron, St. Benedict, are split between the parish and the school. Many thanks to BenFest chair, Jennifer Petrillo, the BenFest committee and the many volunteers who pull together to make this event happen. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, this event, rated as one of Chicago’s best street festivals, could not be held this past summer. OKTOBERFEST: $21,109 (October 2019) Carnival rides, beer and German music can mean only one thing, Oktoberfest at St. Benedict’s. This family-oriented affair brings not only financial resources for our parish, but brings together generations of family and friends for a fun-filled event. Thank you to the entire Kattner family and to Nicole Donoso for their leadership of this event. Similar to Benfest, this event could not safely be held this past fall. GARAGE SALE: over $34,000 (September 2019) to fund teacher and classroom grants as well as various unbudgeted needs around the campus. Thank you to Jen Patras and Ted Kreuser for their leadership as well as their team of volunteers. This year’s garage sale has been postponed until the spring months of 2021 when it will hopefully be safer to conduct the event. FUN RUN: over $123,000 (September 2019) There are so many people to thank on the HSA for the variety of events that they host and the multiple ways they support our parish school. Proceeds from these events go to fund teacher bonuses, classroom grants, technology needs, newly designed classrooms and tech spaces, plus much more.

From everyone who benefits from the tireless work and generosity of our fundraising leaders and volunteers, thank you!
