Oculus Oasis

The goal of this project was to create a place of rest within the oculus, a train station and retail space in New York City. This design pulls inspiration from the organic, natural, curvilinear patterns found in Portuguese azulejo tiles. The shell of the design takes on a form similar to that of tree canopies, providing a cover without feeling enclosed. There are layers of experience within the space, ranging from the high back, intimate seating on the outside of the base to casual seating surrounding a shallow reflection pool. Additionally, kiosks for light, fresh snacks and drinks are located to the outside of the shell. The mood created evokes a light, airy, fresh feel, something to contrast the tightly packed built environment of the surrounding site.

Nestled Dining

In this two-part group project, the team worked to redesign the cafeteria space for a children’s hospital. The entire space was inspired by birds and their relationships with nature. Part one of this project included the development of a “playscape” inspired by the sky and flight and was later incorporated into the cafeteria development. The goal of the cafeteria was to evoke the feelings of nesting, to create a safe space for families, patients and staff to rest and enjoy. The forms and material palette are pulled from various nest designs and construction.

Making New from Old
The goal behind this project was to renovate and reprogram an abandoned factory in Cincinnati, Ohio. Looking to the history of manufacturing that took place on the site, this designer aimed to bring in a new age of “making” within the space by creating a set of studio and display areas across three buildings on the property. Each area has a varying level of restoration applied to parallel the program held within.

Dynamic Installation

The goal of this exercise was to design and build a set of modular units that could be assembled multiple different ways and displayed in various locations. The group worked together to assemble 34 individual units constructed of donated recycled cardboard and also created a brief film that showcased how humans can interact with the installation. Individually, this designer headed the collection of materials and film production as well as assisted with the manufacturing of units.

Rockwell Group

During a four month co-op with Rockwell Group in New York City, this designer worked on multiple different hospitality projects across the world at varying design stages, including high-end restaurants, hotels, a day club, and a luxury health clinic. Although the firm houses over 200 employees, this designer worked mainly with 3 other designers to make FF&E selections, communicate with product reps to order samples, create construction documents, and make presentations, render images and floor plans to be shown in-house and for client review.
