colaborative I Academic I 2023
PROGRAM
The brief of the project was to document and give intervention to bank of the canals with respect to the urban design context.
The agreement of June, 1956 between Andhra Pradesh and Mysore provided that the quantity of water to be drawn annually in right bank high level canal is to be 1415.84 Mm3 (50.00TMC) and is to be shared in the ratio of 35:65 between Mysore and Andhra Pradesh and the cost is to be shared on cu sec mile basis between the two Governments. The agreement also provided that the common works of the canal should be undertaken by the Board.
The Right Bank High Level Canal (RBHLC) in Hospet, Karnataka, is a vital irrigation canal that plays a crucial role in the agricultural development of the region. It is one of the two main canals emanating from the Tungabhadra Dam, the other being the Left Bank Low Level Canal (LBCLL).
The Right Bank High Level Canal (RBHLC), a lifeline for Hospet, Karnataka, is a marvel of engineering crisscrossing the landscape with its vital flow. Imagine a shimmering ribbon of water snaking its way for 177 kilometers, carrying the lifeblood of agriculture and more.
Born from the mighty Tungabhadra Dam, the RBHLC, aptly named, sits on the right bank of the river. With a powerful discharge of 37.6 cubic meters of water per second, it nourishes over 180,000 hectares of land in Bellary, Raichur, and Koppal districts.
A Landscape Transformed:
Once barren fields have blossomed under the RBHLC's watchful gaze. Rice, sugarcane, cotton, and vegetables thrive in its embrace, painting the region with a vibrant tapestry of agricultural prosperity. Beyond Fields:
The RBHLC isn't just about crops. It quenches the thirst of villages and towns along its path, providing precious water for homes and industries.
Challenges and Resilience:
Like a warrior facing trials, the RBHLC contends with climate change and erratic rainfall. Water scarcity casts a shadow, but human ingenuity, through water-saving technologies and sustainable practices, helps the canal keep flowing
BUILDING USE
- Majority of the buildings around the canal are residential.
BUILDING AGE
- 56% of the buildings are aged 20-60 years old.
- 44% of the building are aged 0-20 years old.
- No buildings above 60 years old.
BUILDING HIGHT
- The building height on either sides of the canal increases in ascending order.
VEGETATION
- Less vegetation found within 10 m of the canal.
- No activities seen due to lack of shade adjacent to canal.
Propose imagining Hospet's streets as vibrant arteries for life, not just cars. By weaving in dedicated cycle tracks and serene walking paths, we'll empower residents to choose active, healthy journeys. Canopies of trees will shade these paths, offering respite and breathing life into the cityscape. This isn't just infrastructure, it's a transformation, a vibrant tapestry woven with movement, nature, and community spirit. Let's reclaim the streets for people, one pedal stroke and leafy step at a time
CANAL SECTION
1. Canals can be susceptible to pollution from various sources, waste dumping, and storm water runoff. This pollution can degrade water quality.
2. Slum development along the canal can lead to increased pollution, waste dumping, and habitat destruction. This can negatively impact the canal's ecosystem and the overall environmental health of the area.
3. The absence of street lighting along the canal creates safety hazards for residents, pedestrians, and visitors. Dark areas can become hot spots for criminal activities and accidents, affecting the overall well-being of the community.
