Rape & Abuse Crisis Center Newsletter November 2023
We have witnessed a distressing rise in the frequency and severity of violence within the Fargo-Moorhead area, both impacting the individuals directly involved and placing an increased demand on the services provided by Rape and Abuse Crisis Center. Compounding this issue is that the state of Minnesota has not increased the funding for Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault victim service providers, even despite a significant surplus. This has created a challenge, particularly for rural communities which are now grappling with program scarcity. As the only Crisis Center within 70 miles of the FM Metro, RACC is vital. Our commitment extends beyond direct service, as we collaborate with essential community partners such as schools, hospitals, courts, universities, jails, and detention centers. The increasing demand for our services reflects the growing needs of our community, and RACC is integral to the functioning of these formal systems. Recognizing the evolving needs of our community, RACC has implemented an organizational expansion plan. You’ll see this plan in action over the next few years.
When a victim calls 911, law enforcement often looks to RACC for next steps

The first milestone in our expansion was the acquisition of the Rainbow Bridge Safe Exchange/Supervised Parenting Time Center in 2022, the only service of its kind within 60 miles of Fargo-Moorhead. The program is running at max capacity and we are extending weekend hours to meet families’ needs.

RACC recognizes the importance of ensuring our programs are accessible to everyone and we are dedicated to addressing any possible barriers. Our goal is to provide services that are sensitive to the diverse needs of our community members. This includes ensuring marginalized and oppressed populations maintain access to culturally informed care.

With the rise in the frequency and severity of violence, we are seeing an increase in people seeking our services. To effectively respond to these challenges and make our community safer, we must grow and expand our services. Outreach is not just important; it is imperative and necessary.
Your support ensures we can continue to meet our community’s needs. We would be honored to discuss how you can play a crucial role in our expansion plan. Thank you for your continued dedication to our community. Dr. Christopher Johnson, PhD, MSW Chief Executive Officer
