STATEMENT OF INTENT Each architect holds his/her own unique paradigm. I see Architectural Design as a community focused industry, where creativity and technical ability combine to bring about a progressive environment, a process where buildings and their functionality can genuinely improve the quality of life and influence, as well as reflect, the culture of its occupants. Through my practice I examine some of the issues faced by architecture in the contemporary world, which I believe are embedded in different political, social and cultural rights. The lack of city planning, the worsening environmental problems, uncontrolled population growth, land speculation, the densification of areas already built and the expansion of the suburbs are some of the problems that an architect must face even if with limitations. In view of this, if accepted for this program, my thesis will attempt to address some specific issues that could contribute to the development of a critique and debate on contemporary architecture. Consequently, the main objective of my research will be to investigate the relationships between architecture and “place” in its broadest sense. I am drawn to buildings, which explore new crossovers between contemporary and historic architecture. This inclination was sparked during my time at ECA and Dundee University, where I benefitted from the teaching of architecture as a form of creative communication: design, conceptual development, and technology. My aspiration is to create architecture that is conscious, responsive, consider community context, obey the specific needs of their users and thus create a genuine architectural and regional identity. Since completing a BA(Hons) Interior Design in 2009 and BArch in 2011, I did a six-month placement with RYB Zhuhai, a large architecture and design practice in China. Here, I gained a deep understanding of technics and software used to achieve a high level of architectural visualisation. I was also involved with all developmental stages of the building process, as well as, the opportunity to showcase my own creative thinking.

Architectural Design - Oliveira’s Residence, Fatima, Portugal. (Freelance)

From 2012, I have been involved in the design and construction process of a 200 year-old stone house in Portugal. Presently, I’m also in the initial stages of designing a summer retreat in central Portugal made of shipping containers; construction is expected to start in September 2016.

• Schematic design through construction administration • Researched codes and obtained required building permits. • Created detailed designs, drawings, specifications, resource estimates, and timetables.

As someone with a perceptive and diplomatic outlook, I feel I thrive when working within a larger team. In this way, I am excited at the possibility to develop my existing skills alongside the mentoring of some of the industries leading experts and through the peer-led support, which the University framework can provide.

Architecture Internship - Innovation Imperative, London, United Kingdom Rui Miguel Monteiro • Used AutoCAD to create detailed drawings and specifications for interior components.

- PREFACE Greetings, I am an Architecture & Interior Design Undergraduate with a keen interest in Metabolist and Vernacular architecture. Passionate about informal urban settings and an enthusiastic researcher of sustainable design. This Portfolio is a compilation of work carried out during my educational and professional period. I had the opportunity to collaborate and share experiences with people from all over the world, with whom I worked on very diverse assignments. Each was a unique challenge and an opportunity to learn and grow. In this Portfolio, I selected the projects that were most significant to my personal development and to which I contributed the most. I intended to present the most disparate scales, types of assignments, project phases and geographic locations. It was also my intention to showcase my ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative. For example, the “Oliveira’s Residence which involved restoring a house in Portugal- was done single-handedly. I am a self-motivated, reliable individual, with a proactive approach to problem solving, seeking to develop within a challenging architectural design role. The knowledge and experience I gained during placements and hands-on projects such as the house in Portugal, have fostered essential project management skills and the ability to respond creatively to demanding situations.

Personal Intervention Hotel/Business Complex

CONTEXT

16

Whilst interning at R.Y.B Institute in China, I was required to design a prominent park for the new Tianyun Sunshine International Hotel Complex. The design strategy creates a landscape for public interaction. The park features intricately arranged spaces, which take shapes from sand ripple formations in the nearby river, waterscapes and an entertainment plaza. There is a requirement to keep the electrical house at the front of the main hotel entrance, this was successfully integrated in the overall landscape, using the same aesthetic approach. The construction of this park/hotel and the surrounding landscape aims to regenerate the area and subsequently attract commercial investment.

LOCATION

Local Scale:

Sichuan Province

The project is located at Tianyuan in the Sichuan province of China. The Tianyuan District is Jingyang’s industrial, economic and technological development zone. Located at the west gate of Deyang are the Jinqian Hu businesses with more than 30,000 employees and nearly 50,000 residents. In the next 3-5 years the population of this area is expected to grow to roughly 15 million local residents. The urban complex aims to improve parking and the Tianyuan Metro commercial brand and value. It will advance the industrial area and support local businesses.

PROGRAM For the past 5000 years China’s agricultural land has been transformed. The proposal suggests a rescue of the terraced farmlands, terraced waters and mountains, and sustainable cultivation/irrigation practices. These ancient exercises, integrated with cutting-edge biological and energy technologies, seek to formulate a template for contemporary urban planning in the city. The undulating patterns are a practical solution to the site’s height difference, whilst also serving as an extension of the river, framing a symbolic structure. As part of the water treatment system, a sustainable water system and aqueduct will be integrate, elsewhere, solar panels and wind turbines will also be allocated. The conservation approach to old roads and village sites assures that these are preserved and integrated with special botanical gardens. Note: This is a project I undertook whilst Interning at R.Y.B Architecture & Design Institute, China. 34

PROGRAM This is my first feasible commission. I worked independently, with clients that welcomed creative autonomy: a valuable gift to an aspiring architect. I approached the project with optimism and eagerness, and completed the preliminary design whilst fulfilling other professional obligations. Due to some knowledge of construction, I was able to aid in the process of pouring basement foundations, plastering and carpentry.

Ground-Flour

Situated in the historical religious village of Fatima in Portugal. The proposal suggests the renovation/restoration of a decaying country-house plus its adjacent 3 centuries old ruins. The design transforms the interior spaces, from a classic partitioned layout into a simplified open plan accommodation, while preserving the building’s original stone facade and traditional appeal. One intends to modernise the way the building will be inhabited by implementing a series of up-to-date design strategies including reduced materiality, and progressive methodologies for energy consumption.

Site Plan

42

43

The proposal embraces the local tradition of understanding the exterior as part of the domestic space. This relationship, between interior and exterior goes beyond a visual connection, therefore, both front and backyard will feature leisure spaces, under the same comfort umbrella as the interior spaces.

PROGRAM WHAT - Eco-Sustainable Building, designed as a retreat for Architects. WHY - The space aims to accommodate an architecture and design studio/retreat specifically focused at developing innovative and sustainable design ideas, offering workshops to professionals of the industry from around the globe. HOW - To reflect the idea of sustainability, the space has been designed using a reductionist aesthetic, which uses as few materials as possible. It is my hope, that by reducing materiality, the resident designers will in turn be inspired to use only what is necessary in there own projects. It is this psychology that I want my design to mirror and thereby promoting the sensible use of natural resources. WHERE - The ruins of Tantallon Castle, is found to be ideal to accommodate the concept of a reductionist aesthetic that reminds the resident designers of their relationship to nature. Firstly, because of the sites isolated location, and secondly, because the ruins themselves reflect an extreme in material reduction. 54

Dundee City, UK

Site

PROGRAM The design reflects the character of the city and pay homage to the many people who once worked in the Verdant Works High Mill. The building features an archive that revolutionises the way we research and educate. The archive will specialise in making genealogical, local history and innovative documentation accessible. The provision of accommodation for international researchers, where they can uncover their own identity within Dundee, will make this archive unique. One of the aspirations for this building is to make users reflect upon the harsh industrial environment that modelled the character of the city.
